Review: OK, so the Cold Spring label is known for delivering some seriously poignant music, but we were;t expecting something of this magnitude. What we have here is very special, indeed, and not just because of the artists involved, but of how well they sound together. Mythical free-jazz pioneer, the late Sun Ra, is reinterpreted by seminal Japanese noise artist Merzbow across three visionary sonic sketches. "Granular Jazz" is stretched across three segments, the first being a cacophony of noises, a violent swarm of sounds that move as one giant wall of sound to hit your eardrums and sense, senseless. The second part is curiously named Part 3, and the familiar beehive of sonic treachery is tweaked and evolved into an even noisier beast, leaving Part 3 to offer a hint of drums in the distance, imperceptible at first impact, but that subtly shifts the track onto more human terrains. Excellent stuff... for those that are into travelling down to the abyss...
