Angry enough to make you feel like there is still hope, and innovative enough to make you wonder whether - in an increasingly risk-averse music industry - enough people will get to know and love them. Review: Pioneering punk outfit Crass continue with their ambitious The Feeding Of Five Thousand Remix Project, a self-professed testament to just how multifarious the group were when they dropped The Feeding back in 1978. Melding elements of rap and grime, before either were even a thing, with raw and raucous anarchistic guitar spirit, there's a lot that can be done with those original stems.

Review: Doctor Explosion returns with a surprise: they sing in Catalan! This limited-edition single features two tracks - one is a remake of their early classic 'Baby Please Go' (now titled 'Ves-te'n Si Us Plau') and the other is a cover of 'Perdo L'esma', an adaptation by Barcelona's Eurogrup of James Brown's' I'll Go Crazy.' Both songs are sung by Jorge Explosion in flawless Catalan and co-produced by Guerssen and Circo Perrotti. This release feels like a reunion of old friends that recalls the early days of both projects so is rife with nostalgia.

Review: This marks a first ever reissue of this cult-status punk-funk, no wave electro post-punk fusion 45 from 1979. It's by post-Wayne County Electric Chairs and has been produced by David Cunningam and now expanded to 12". The first tune 'So Many Ways' has Val Haller on lead vocals and sounded at the time very different from anything else the band had done. A hypnotic, sure charged groove that still sounds years ahead of its time. 'J'attends Les Marines' is a rework of 'Waiting For The Marines' from the Things Your Mother album but with some added dub and experimental flourishes. Two versions of 'So Many Ways' then close out this fine curio.

Review: Originally released in 2008, Phantom On The Horizon is the grandiose, progressive rock worshipping high concept EP from Washington based math-rock indebted post-hardcore heroes The Fall Of Troy. Initially abandoned following the leak of early versions in 2004 on what has since been dubbed The Ghostship Demos EP, the band would finally get over this setback and bang out the entire project in secret over October of 2008 before dropping it the very next month. Renowned for its epic, lengthy pieces segmented into chapters like all good prog concept records, the work stands as solely unique from the majority of the trio's remaining output, bridged in the gap year between 2007's instantaneous Manipulator and the more melodic alt rock of 2009's In The Unlikely Event. Utilising an array of guest musicians adding elements of keyboards, violin, cello and glockenspiel for that extra proggy flair, while featuring guest vocal appearances from the likes of Fear Before's Dave Marion as well as both Ryann Donnelly and Jonah Bergman of Schoolyard Heroes, the mini-epic 5 tracks clock in at a 37-minute runtime detailing story of a Spanish galleon meeting with a ghost ship from another dimension. A true outlier gem conjuring a Venn Diagram intersection between early noughties sassy post-hardcore and timeless 70s indebted prog absurdity.

Review: Big guitars playing huge hooks at a propellant pace. The Goods deliver their debut EP, which looks to decades worth of garage rock and pop punk heritage for influence, while ensuring the finished tracks are every bit theirs. Retro revivalism this isn't, a veteran singer-songwriter known for sharp lines drafting seasoned talent from his local music scene in order to make something new, this most definitely is. Headed up by Rob Good, a well-known figure in the underground Oakland guitar scene, California, for the three tracks here - and this project - he's called upon rhythm section and human drum machine Paul Wiseman and highly respected session bassist Cherron Arena. The result is an EP that's personal and passionate, and incredibly thoughtful, while also compelling and high octane. A refreshing indie whirlwind.

Review: Borrowing a title from a 50ft sport climbing route in Oliana, Spain, there's definitely something big and wonderfully overbearing about the debut offering from Hot Face. Freshly pressed onto London's revered and always-forward thinking Speedy Wunderground imprint, the work here more than lives up to the label's name, going at listeners with pedal to the metal for the most. Comprising two tracks, an original and 'dub', the opener nods to the likes of King Gizzard and other sprawling, epic prog-metal-psyche outfits, offering up huge guitar solos and switching tempos with cunning, guile and groove. Flip it to find the alternative take, which ups the impact of drums, taking us closer to dance music as it's more widely recognised, and the heyday of big beat, if anyone remembers that one?

Review: A 12" split meeting of the minds between two equally iconic alt rock punk-lifers, this EP brings together Gainesville, Florida's Hot Water Music and New York City's Quicksand (brainchild of Gorilla Biscuits hardcore hero and Rival Schools emo-grunge auteur Walter Schreifels), covering each other's classic tracks with renditions of 'Fazer' from the Quicksand 1993 debut LP Slip and 'Free Radio Gainesville' off of Hot Water Music's 1999 third full-length No Division. Filling out the tracklist are the unreleased 'Supercollider' which marks the first new cut of Quicksand material since 2021's Distant Populations, and the b-side 'Undertow', originally recorded during sessions from Hot Water Music's latest 2024 LP Vows. With simple cover art featuring Hot Water Music's Chuck Ragan on one side, and Quicksand's Alan Cage on the other, it perfectly summarises this playful, mutual celebration of one another's work, some new, some old, all great.

Review: The fantastic James Taylor Quartet delivers a punk-infused track with a powerhouse chorus here that channels the energy of Taylor's time with The Prisoners when supporting The Ramones during their 1986 UK tour. Of that time he has said The Ramones were "incredible-watching their three-hour sets every night at 21 had a huge impact on me. It took until I was 60 to find a way to act on that inspiration." Though The James Taylor Quartet has always had a punky rock 'n' roll vibe in their live shows, this feels fresh and like a new discovery, despite the influence always being present on some level.

Review: Grand Rapids, Michigan post-hardcore collective La Dispute have become legends within the scene due to their popularising of the resurgent 90s screamo sound along with peers in Touche Amore and Pianos Become The Teeth. Known for their subtle fusion of post-rock malaise and crescendo building with the frenetic chaos of emotive hardcore, all unified under the hypnotic spoken-word/caustic shrieks of frontman and highly poetic lyricist Jordan Dreyer, 2006 saw the release of their much-lauded debut EP 'Vancouver', two years prior to their first album Somewhere At The Bottom Of The River Between Vega & Altair. Clocking in at over a half-hour whilst comprising of eight tracks, many fans often consider the work more of a mini-LP and with that, this 12" cloudy blue reissue will stand spine-to-spine with any of their subsequent full-lengths, both figuratively and literally.

Review: Founded in 1977 in New Jersey, The Misfits are regularly cited as progenitors of horror punk. Whether you have examples of bands that set the tone for that sub-genre earlier is, of course, another point entirely. Nevertheless, the outfit, which are still going today, laid down a blueprint for a take on punk that was at once rowdy and gnarly, but also conceptual and artistic.
Not that you really need to focus on those aspects when listening to the raucous and frenetic 'Horror Business'. If you prefer, it's just as easy to centre on the shout-y chorus and relentless riff that carry the track to its cacophonous conclusion. Also included here is the runaway train-ride of 'Teenagers From Mars', and equally uncompromising 'Children in Heat'. A masterclass of why louder is often better.

Review: Originally released at the dawn of the new millennium in the 2000th year of our Lord, The 'Miracle Of Shame' was an EP from Berkley, California 80s pop-punk legends The Mr T Experience. Their only project to feature bassist Gabe Meline as an official member following his studio contributions to the preceding years' full-length Alcatraz (their final work with Joel Reader handling bass duties), the credits also cite Erik Noyes on Hammond organ as an official member, as he'd previously recorded with the band on 1997's Revenge Is Sweet & So Are You as well as Alcatraz but had never been considered an official member. Reissued on a 1-sided etched green vinyl 12" (like any true punk EP should be), the material gives the almost guaranteed nod to The Ramones they've become known for (on 'Mr. Ramones'), while the beautifully titled closer 'I Don't Know Where Dan Treacy Lives' is easily one of the greatest punk song titles of the 21st century. No, we will not back that up.

Well, they've been hitting their stride for roughly 17 albums, but while many bands - especially those at the more frenetic and uncompromising end of things - tend to start, err, compromising after four or five long forms, the Birmingham grindcore masters still sound fresh. Albeit fresh but covered in sweat and rage.
Following on from 2020's Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism, Resentment is a mini-LP that picks up where its predecessor left off. Among the highlights is a fantastic cover of 1980s industrial electronic outfit Slab!, but really it's nigh-on-impossible to pick specifics here - buckle up, turn it up, and let the ferocity wash over you. Suffice to say, keeping this level of intensity without winding up sounding like you're screaming into the abyss isn't easy, and Napalm Death's career should be considered a masterclass.

Review: Following on from last year's excellent statement of intent, 'Nowhere Generation', Chicago natives and melodic hardcore heroes Rise Against return with the companion, sister EP, 'Nowhere Generation II'. Composed of 5 new cuts originally written/recorded during the album process, the band opted to split the 16 full songs into separate volumes, in order to give listeners an opportunity to fully digest the overarching themes of alienation and everlasting political corruption that have become ceaselessly commonplace. Anthemic, ferocious, emotive and cathartic in equal measure, this follow-up continues the momentous energy of its predecessor while putting a definitive full stop on the 'Nowhere Generation' era. Lead single, 'Last Man Standing', is also one of the most vital contributions to their own expansive canon the group have dropped in well over a decade.

Review: Tumor Circus were the ugly, unpleasant and utterly unhinged meeting of the minds between Dead Kennedys' frontman Jello Biafra, Charlie Tolnay (King Snake Roost, Grong Grong, Lubricated Goat) and members of noise rock merchants Steel Pole Bathtub. Releasing only one self-titled LP in 1991, the project has gone on to become the stuff of avant-garde noisecore legend, with the album's sweetest ditty 'Meathook Up My Rectum' reissued on one-sided etched 7" complete with B-side etching and new artwork all designed by horror author/filmmaker Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Nightbreed).

While originally formed in 1993, the band have been retrospectively discovered by later generations of fans due to the inclusion of guitarist Dan Wleklinski and bassist Joe Principe (both of whom would later form Rise Against). 1998 would see the arrival of their much anticipated follow up to 1995's debut full-length Behind Bars, in the form of scene classic Back On The Streets. Remastered and reissued by original label-home Hopeless, who have ballooned in popularity due to the rise of the hardcore and punk movements in recent decades, this sophomore LP delivers the band's frenetic, complex yet melodious approach to hardcore, while carefully restoring but never defanging the original master tapes.

Review: Formed in Chicago in 1993, 88 Fingers Louie are/were (depending on what their current hiatus status is) a melodic hardcore outfit best known for being the early project of guitarist Dan Wleklinski and bassist Joe Principe, who would later depart to form Rise Against (with Principe continuing to remain a prominent member). Following a slew of early 7" singles, 1995 saw the arrival of the band's debut full-length Behind Bars, landing courtesy of Hopeless Records, who continue to care for their classic back catalogue with an astute attention to detail (unlike many other label owners who seemingly continue to hoard and ignore the bevvy of out-of-print titles they could easily repress with a bit of gumption). Remastered in 2019 by Mr. Precision himself (the producer alias of Wleklinski who has since returned to his original group for reunion shows), this latest pressing boasts these updated masters which highlight the band's often overlooked compositional intricacies while evading the common pitfall of removing too much of the initial primitive dank that endeared so many a listener almost three decades prior.

Review: Originally formed in 1976 and often described as "one of the longest-lived groups of the punk era", London's own 999 are punk rock royalty who have the type of loyal fanbase that were either there to see their classic debut single 'I'm Alive' land them a deal with United Artists around the same time as their peers in Buzzcocks, or astute historians who've studied all of their past accomplishments (and unfair inconsideration) in retrospect. Whichever side of the number you land on, both generational fanbases often intersect at the release of the criminally underrated Death In Soho. Originally released in 2007, almost a full decade on from 1997's Takeover, while it'd be another 13 years until the 2020 follow up Bish! Bash! Bosh!, this latter day output showcases the seasoned veterans playing for themselves and for keeps, combining aged bitterness with classic punk rock sensibilities but with an admittedly warmer sense of production value. Don't let the age-old attitude that legacy punk bands don't deliver late-stage LPs worth of value fool you, Death In Soho is one of 999's best. Yes, we said it.

Review: Described as "one of the longest-lived groups of the punk era", London's own 999 originally formed in 1976, quickly developing a cult following through incessant gigging before landing a recording deal with United Artists around the same time as Buzzcocks off the strength of their debut single 'I'm Alive'. Fast forward through two seminal punk classics with their 1977 self-titled debut LP followed in 1978 with the phenomenal Separates, and we land at the iconic Old Waldorf (long shutdown and now a comedy club) for this recently unearthed live album. Emergency At The Old Waldorf 1979 offers a fly on the wall earful of the legendary punk act at the height of their prowess, tearing through some of their best known bangers including 'Hit Me', 'Homicide', and of course, 'Emergency', while this translucent ruby red vinyl edition comes complete with never before seen tour photos as well as liner notes penned by frontman Nick Cash.

Review: Raw post-punk trio Abdomen trade in the heavier end of the genre unafraid to douse distortion and fuzz onto everything and create music so exciting it would be hard not to want to throw yourself into a circle put for, 'Damage Tool' is a breathtaking way to get things started and 'Numbers' makes Fontaines DC sound like Boyzone. They are capable of slowing down - 'Dazed' has been slowed into a hypnotic Spacemen 3-esque psych/shoegaze jam. The band are relative newcomers and not widely known... yet. But this is going to be one of those albums you'll be kicking yourself for not having a first pressing of. Abdomen is only going to get bigger and it will give the Tapetown studio in Aarhus, Denmark - where they recorded this - more bragging rights for being among the coolest alternative music spaces in Europe.

Review: Originally released in 1999 and now celebrating its 25th anniversary, Black Sails In The Sunset was the fourth full-length from California hardcore-turned-horror punk heroes AFI, and is often cited as the pivotal project that signalled their sonic, career and identity shift for the decades ahead. Their first album with guitarist Jade Puget, the material marked a notable distancing from the frenetic energy of 1997's Shut Your Mouth & Open Your Eyes, and began their long love affair with gothic romanticism, Lovecraftian lyricism and a newfound horror aesthetic. Review: Formed in 1982, New York City hardcore pioneers Agnostic Front left a defining impact on the burgeoning scene with their unmatched ferocity and sonic abrasion as well as their intimidating attitude and skinhead aesthetic, which would lead to them incorrectly being perceived by some as racists or neo-Nazis. Coming up in the rundown streets of Lower East Side Manhattan, surrounded by urban decay in an area battling severe poverty, drugs, and violence, they channelled their anger into a new breed of punk that would serve as both a rallying cry for the less fortunate as well as an urgent, abrasive form of catharsis. Review: Ones to watch in 2025, according to BBC Introducing, double-MOBO Award nominated sisters Nyrobi and Chaya, AKA ALT BLK ERA claim to be "redefining music" with their fusion of rock, house, drum & bass, rap and pop. They're certainly making enough noise to start a mini revolution, with the months preceding Rave Immortal seeing them blow up at events like Glastonbury, Download, and the Reading-Leeds weekenders. Sonically there's not much more to add - this is a rabid, in-your-face, high tempo amalgamation of sound that calls to mind the likes of NERVO, Pendulum, Enter Shikari, and to a lesser extent Prodigy. All convention-defying names, the fact ALT BLK ERA are also big advocates of disability rights and inclusivity within the music industry also paints them, sadly, as necessary outsiders.

Review: You don't get to call your band Amyl & The Sniffers if the music is anything short of corrosive, in the best possible way. Launching at a serious pace from the off, this is punk at its modern best - a juggernaut of sweat, swearing and uncompromising songwriting that's only rival for your attention comes in the form of riffs and gritty chord instrumentation.
But the Melbourne, Australia band's second LP is far from a simple rehash of the first, which we could have also described in similar terms to those you just read above. Review: In a time where the gruff-throated anti-Tory messaging of Idles, the reflective post-drugged out swagger of Viagra Boys and the pub-feed championing of The Chats remind us that punk can still be a vital voice of the people, both big and small, Amyl & The Sniffers have all but quietly been amassing the type of hype and buzz to go toe-to-toe with the lot. Capitalising on the momentum of 2021's exceptional Comfort To Me with last year's 7" "fuck you" to old, gatekeeping curmudgeons on 'U Should Not Be Doing That', the band return to producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) for their severely anticipated third LP Cartton Darkness. Recorded at the Foo Fighters' 606 Studios in Los Angeles, the one and only real-life Amyl (Ms. Amy Taylor) succinctly describes the message as - "driving headfirst into the unknown, into this looming sketch of the future that feels terrible but doesn't even exist yet. A childlike darkness. I don't want to meet the devil half-way and mourn what we have right now. The future is cartoon, the prescription is dark, but it's novelty. It's just a joke. It's fun."

Review: Kentucky born musical absurdist and voice actor Beth Andersen weaved her way in and out of mainstream circles throughout the entirety of her career, with some of her biggest claims to fame being the use of her 'Dance Dance Dance' single on the Scarface soundtrack as well as her voice acting credits which include appearances in The Swan Princess, Babes In Toyland, and Tarzan. Unbeknownst to many, however, was her artistic double life where she was simultaneously known as a creative academic and scholar whilst dabbling in the niche underground art-punk scenes of the 70s, where with the help of (at the time) future Sonic Youth/Dinosaur Jr producer Wharton Tiers as well as member of the new wave band Theoretical Girls, she was able to carve out one bemusing piece of wax that perplexed familiars on all sides of her spectrums with its self-described fusion of a myriad of unlikely anti-genres such as "yoga punk", "ramble rap", "combustion pop" and "form room funk"... all of which were officially neatly bracketed under the curious Text-Sound movement where Beth garnered utmost respect as a key practitioner. Long out of print, never thought to find its way to wax again, these percussive, rhythmic avant-punk poems and spoken word ditties are even more bizarre in practice than theory.

Review: Hailing from Toronto, Canada, The Anti-Queens are an all-woman riot grrrl pop-punk mob brimming and buzzing with influences from the likes of The Distillers and The Blackhearts, yet with the feral grunge bite of L7. Returning a half-decade on from their 2019 self-titled debut full-length, Disenchanted doubles down like a confident sophomore follow up should, maximising the buzzsaw riffs, snarling vocals and severely pissed off earworm hooks while furthering their sonic mashup of all things fuzzy, grungy, poppy and punky (no, the last three probably aren't real worlds but they are in The Anti-Queens dictionary).

Review: Originally released in 2012, Daybreaker would serve as the fifth full-length from Brighton progressive metalcore heavyweights Architects, following an identity crisis after 2011's more streamlined post-hardcore effort The Here & Now. Review: Rancid, or members of the legendary punk band, have put out a record every year since the turn of the new millennium. Tim Armstrong's A Poet's Life is one of them and it first came back in 2007 but only on CD. Now, it gets the full vinyl treatment and comes on limited gatefold milky clear wax via Hellcat. It is a deep dive into reggae and ska from the guitarist and frontman of Rancid and comes with able backing from L.A. reggae revivalists the Aggrolites. The modern, fun-filled reggae album is full of groove with nods to rock steady, roots reggae, and dancehall all filtered through his own unique pop-punk lens. Armstrong's voice is a key ascent of what makes this such a likeable record.

Review: Following the major success of 1983's seminal sophomore effort Rock For Light, in which reggae-hardcore heroes Bad Brains would work studiously under The Cars' Ric Ocasek, and even re-record some of their self-titled debut LP's strongest cuts such as 'Sailin' On' and 'Banned In D.C.'; the hard left turn of their now acclaimed third full-length I Against I initially shocked many a hardcore purists upon its initial 1986 release. Arriving courtesy of SST Records, the album showcased an even further disregard for genre or scene parameters than the band had exuded up to that point, absorbing elements of funk, soul, r&b and, most notably, alternative metal, with the material falling somewhere in line with the likes of Living Colour, yet a far scuzzier version. While early reception was somewhat maligned and controversial, with the band even back-peddling on 1989's Quickness, there's no denying the sprawling influence the record has had in the decades since, with covers of the title-track coming from Jeff Buckley to Denzel Curry, while its sonic presence can be heard all the way up to modern hardcore stalwarts such as Turnstile. Not to mention the iconic lore behind the vocals to 'Sacred Love' being recorded by H.R. over the phone from prison while serving time on a marijuana distribution charge. How can you get any more hardcore punk reggae than that?

It was a performance broadcast live on radio and it comes now on nice heavyweight vinyl with plenty of lesser-known tunes in amongst some of the bigger moments. Review: If you're not a Blink 182 fan the fact the American pop punk rockers put out a Greatest Hits album in 2005 might be quite surprising considering they only rose to international chart repute at the turn of the century. Review: Following on from last year's triumphant return to pop-punk glory that was Blink-182's ninth overall full-length One More Time (yet seventh with original vocalist/guitarist Tom DeLonge and first since 2011's Neighbourhoods), the band return to remind fans that the extensive good will they've been awarded by their devout followers on this comeback is very much reciprocated. Too early to drop another full-length, yet clearly rejuvenated to the point that new material keeps rearing its head during their continuing global tour, the trio opt to meet themselves in the middle with One More Time Part 2, which is essentially a mega deluxe version complete with ten bonus tracks, adding an additional half hour of new material (a new album in pop-punk terms). Boasting refined anthems such as 'No Fun' and 'All In My Head', while making room for darker synth-laden moments such as 'Can't Go Back' and even more Box Car Racer indebted buzzsaw post-hardcore in the form of 'Everyone Everywhere', this definitive collection offers far more than a forgettable batch of cutting room floor B-sides, and provides a comforting notion that this (one more) time around, Blink are back for themselves and the creative reward as much as for the fans and the payday.

Review: In the midst of the 90s math-rock/shoegazing scenes marrying themselves to the progressive Midwest emo movement that had stemmed from hardcore and grunge, one short-lived act too pissed off to play ball was The Brides. Referred to in the underground circles as "Chicago's Best Band of the 1990s", their approach was simplistic and singular: jagged edged, lo-fi cutthroat punk rock too fuzzy to be called garage yet refusing to recognise the hardcore aggression of latter days. Suburban Vermin 1996-98 catalogues the entirety of the band's brief discography, including their eight previously unreleased 1997 legendary demo tracks, blistering 7" cuts as well as previously unheard alternates and live demo takes. Nasty, arrogant - and better than every band you listen to - The Brides were the last stop off the cliff of ballsy punk n' roll, and this studious compilation is sure to wet the beak of any fans of the likes of Crime, Viletones, Pagans, Weirdos, or Heartbreakers.
