Review: Chicago extraordinaire Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being's third solo album is titled There Is No Acid In This House, and sees him return to Soul Jazz Records. Using his idiosyncratic electronic sound, Moss takes influence from the experimental minds of fellow Windy City innovators such as The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Sun Ra, through to icons of his hometown's house music scene like Ron Hardy, Marshall Jefferson, Lil Louis and others who have defined Chicago's musical universe over the last half a century.

Review: It's been 50 years, give or take a few months, since Juliet Lawson bestowed Boo on the world. Landing on the Sovereign record label, the debut album was as confident as it was vulnerable and forward thinking, marking the arrival of a bonafide super talent who would emerge in tandem with a slew of incredible British songwriters (Nick Drake, Christine McVie, Vashti Bunyan). But even in and among that landscape, this one was something truly unique. Over the next half century, Boo rightly achieved cult status, giving Lawson her only real commercial success, despite the fact the record refuses to pander to anything like commercialism. Now rarer than British sunshine in November, this new pressing of the LP on vinyl, with bonus 7" single featuring two early demo tracks produced by ex-Yardbirds founder Paul Samwell-Smith, should not be missed.

Review: Drummer and composer David Lee Jr.'s acclaimed yet hard to find gem Evolution from 1974 is revered for the way it ingeniously melds the experimental spirit of John Coltrane and Sun Ra with the infectious rhythms of New Orleans. A standout among legendary New Orleans drummers, including Zigaboo Modeliste and Idris Muhammed, Lee Jr. showcased fiery innovation and unparalleled experimentation here on this 'lost classic' deep jazz album, originally released on Lee Jr.'s Supernal Records. It embodies a quest for creative progress and spiritual freedom and is rooted in the vibrant rhythms of New Orleans and Afro-Futurist musical concepts. It remains a rare and monumental achievement in the realm of deep and spiritual jazz, and here has been newly remastered for a limited magenta vinyl edition.

Review: Jackie Mittoo is a true legend of Jamaican music, with credits to too many records to count from his days as the go-to keys man in the fabled surrounds of Studio One. From the breakthrough years of The Skatalites to thousands of recordings for the likes of Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, The Wailers, Marcia Griffiths and countless more, his service to reggae is without question. His solo works are a treasure in themselves, which Soul Jazz knew only too well when they put together this dazzling compilation back in 2000. It's been due a repress for some time - a double pack of pure keys-led bliss from a reggae icon given the shine he so thoroughly deserves.

Review: As the undisputed 'Keyboard King of Studio One' Jackie Mittoo left a huge mark on Jamaican music across the eras, helping found The Skatalites and leading The Soul Brothers amongst many other bands. Soul Jazz gathered together some rare recordings of Mittoo and the Soul Brothers from the mid-60s, where the ensemble glide with poise between ska and rocksteady, sprinkling in funk, jazz and Latin touches for good measure. It's a heady crew which captures Jamaican music in a period of open-ended innovation, as practised by some of the key architects of the sounds. After being out of print for some time, this special green vinyl edition isn't likely to hang around for long.

Review: It can be hard to keep up with the different days devoted to recorded music, from Record Store Day to Album Day to Black Friday, but two really cares so long as the tunes keep coming. And they don't come much finer than this - Ripple's self-titled album was originally released in 1973 and soon became known as a rare groove, funk and deep soul classic. Some 50 years on and it has been remastered to sound as good as ever and remind us why the band were right up there with peers such as Funkadelic, Kool and the Gang and The Blackbyrds, all of whom served up equally brilliant mixes of rock, soul, photo disco and funk. The is the first time this one has been back in print for some 30 years.

Review: There's a lot going on here, and a lot of pure goodness at that. Fans of the Soul Jazz imprint rarely shut up about the label's output quality, and this latest LP from Trees Speak - their second to date - is a case in point. A record that sounds as though it was raised on some of the finest outsider music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, the whole thing is saturated in pop references but doesn't come across forced or lazy.

You don't have to listen hard to hear the kind of proto-electro and Krautrock that came from the likes of Can, Popul Vuh and Neu!, John Carpenter's movie scores or traits of the No Wave movement that took subterranean New York by storm a few decades ago. Stylistically, the result is a sonic place that has as much attitude as it does edge, equal parts grit and groove, funk and rock, soul and sleaze.

Review: TimeFold marks a thrilling evolution for Trees Speak, the Tucson-based duo of Daniel Martin Diaz and Damian Diaz. This album expands their sonic palette, traversing vast cosmic soundscapes and evoking the charm of imaginary 1920s silent film scores. The blend of hypnotic krautrock rhythms, angular post-punk textures, and synth motifs reminiscent of Stranger Things creates a mesmerising auditory journey. Rooted in the enchanting desert landscapes of Arizona, Trees Speak draws inspiration from the notion that trees and plants can serve as repositories of information, communicating in profound ways. Their music embodies this concept, merging elements of German krautrock, no wave, and psychedelic rock to forge a distinctive and enthralling sound. Since their debut with Ohms in 2020, their prolific output on Soul Jazz Records has culminated in TimeFold, the sixth album in just four years. This latest release seamlessly weaves together organic and electronic influences. With TimeFold, Trees Speak are innovative as they are engaging, celebrating the intersection of nature and technology in a truly unique sound.

Review: Tucson, Arizona-based band Trees Speak have been exploring the interplay of 1970s German electronic music and modern production since the early 2010s. Their latest release, Mind Maze, showcases their penchant for intricacy, dreamweaving psychedelic rock, krautrock, and electronic music into a lengthy 19-track tapestry. The band's mesmerizing live shows, featuring live projections and intricate lighting design, have garnered them a cult following - but that barely scratches the surface of their conceptual scope, with their name drawing inspiration from the concept of harnessing future technologies to store information and data in trees and plants, with the idea that trees are able to communicate within their root systems. A convincing continuum of kosmische cool.

It has been fully remastered and comes with original artwork and mirrors the eclectic sounds of Mandrill, The Blackbyrds and Kool and the Gang. Tribe, led by multi-instrumentalist Earl J Foster and producer Big Dee Ervin, blended funk, jazz, rock, Latin and soul into a singular style on the album which was originally released independently in 1977 and has been out of print for over 45 years. Dedication is a masterpiece that offers a deep, spaced-out fusion.

Review: Soul Jazz Records marks the 18th anniversary of this seminal album with a stunning limited-edition red vinyl reissue for Record Store Day 2025. Fully remastered and expanded with new tracks, the compilation dives deep into the early '90s roots of jungle, ragga and drum & bass and coms on strong from the off with enre-defining anthems like General Levy's 'Incredible,' Cutty Ranks' 'Limb By Limb' and Congo Natty's take on 'Under Me Sensi'. They all make it a high-energy trip through a revolutionary moment in UK music and this version comes with extensive liner notes, interviews and rare photos making it both a crucial historical document and an essential listen.

Review: Roll out the linoleum for breakdancin' in the streets to Soul Jazz's expertly curated Electro Throwdown: Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack on Planet Earth 1982-89. The compilation documents a distinct period of prolific creativity and sonic futurism, delivering thirteen body-rockin' classics, obscurities, and deep cuts from the '80s. Leading the charge is Professor X's 'Professor X (Saga)', outlining his self-referential bodypopping beat manifesto in sound, while certain other emblematic come procured by originators like The Rickie Clark Company, Jonzun Crew, Mo-Jo, The Troids and Jazaq. Harking to a time when the only prerequisite for rocking a crowd was a TR-808 and a sense of groove, we're more than happy to be beamed back.

Review: Soul Jazz Records' new Miami Sound 2 is a superlative collection of 70s soul, funk, disco and boogie featuring tracks from legendary artists such as Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas, Gwen McRae, Milton Wright, T-Connection and many more, all released on the mighty TK Records musical empire based in Miami, Florida. Centring on the curatorial efforts of TK Records founder Henry Stone, who is credited by Soul Jazz as one of the tastemaking pioneers of boogie, after the early ferments of gritty funk and soul formed out of the arrival of disco in the mid-70s. This compilation snaps up a distinct, unforgettable moment in the pivot from disco into soul, with essential tracks from Betty Wright, to Timmy Thomas, to Raw Soul Express, to T Connection all in tow.

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

Review: Soul Jazz Records continues to trawl through the vast archives of Jamaica's Studio One label and its many offshoots. This time round, they're focusing on uplifting, feel-good rocksteady and soulful reggae cuts from the late 1960s and early '70s. As you'd expect, it's an excellent collection that not only showcases classic cuts and well-worn "riddims", but also obscurities and the sort of rare gems that make reggae collectors go weak at the knees. With such stars as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, the Heptones and Jackie Mittoo all featured, and exhaustive sleeve notes from reggae scholar Rob Chapman, Rocksteady Got Soul is another essential Studio One compilation from the reliable Soul Jazz Records crew.

Review: Compilations don't come much more authentic or complete than those put together by the legendary London Soul Jazz crew. Cold Wave is a new one that focusses on current electronic artists who "have all been shaped by the early European cold wave artists of the late 70s and early 80s." The first instalment was essential and the second is much the same. Where that one was organ, this one is translucent purple, with big names like Lena Willikens, Job Sifre and Tolouse Low Trax all joining the dost between the past, present and future of this sound.

Review: The latest collection from the mighty Soul Jazz draws together a myriad of different styles favoured by black British sound systems, not only reflecting the roots of different communities reaching these shores but also the UK twist that that music has received as result. Reggae forms the backbone of the collection, from the blissful consciousness of Pebbles' 'Positive Vibrations' to the more protest-orientated Brown Sugar's 'Black Pride' and Tabby Cat Kelly's 'Don't Call Us Immigrants'. But the presence of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins, Ray Keith aka The Terrorist and Digital Mystikz helps show the uniquely British areas into which sound system culture evolved - rave, breakbeat, jungle and dubstep.

Review: Here's hoping you've got your super-weird hat on. As the title of this latest Soul Jazz compilation suggests, the tracks on here are anything but by numbers and cross so many genre lines it often becomes impossible to differentiate between the rock and electronic bits, simultaneously teaching us all something about the connectivity of everything, and how real creativity has never been siloed by style.

Of course the likes of 'Guten Abend, Leute' by Deutsche Wertarbeit are firmly in the synth end of things, a building track that uses phaser noises and accordions to create something that could definitely work on today's dancefloors. And next on the list, 'Wolf City' by Amon Duul II, is a strange rock brew of post punk and jazz. But elsewhere work such as 'Pink Sails' by Klauss Weiss, 'Ballet Statique' from Conrad Schnitzler and the heartbreakingly beautiful pianos of Roedelius' 'Halmharfe' make differences harder to identify.

This second volume delves into Jamaica's deep connection with American soul and funk and features legendary reggae artists like Horace Andy, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, Jackie Mittoo, and more. These Studio One veterans reinterpret classic and obscure tracks by soul icons such as Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, and Al Green. The album showcases a mix of classics, rare and unreleased tracks, all digitally remastered, so it stands tall as one of the best celebrations of the enduring influence of American soul on Jamaican music.

Review: Back in 2017, Soul Jazz offered up a superb box set of seven 7" singles featuring a wealth of 1970s Nigerian afro-rock, afro-funk and afro-disco. Since then the box has been changing hands for significant sums online, so they've bowed to pressure and decided to reissue it as a gatefold double album. It features the same combination of tracks from the likes of Geraldo Pino, Tony Grey, The Wings and MFB, though this time they've been included in a different order. For those interested in raw, raucous and life-affirming Nigerian dance music from the period, it should be an essential purchase (providing, of course, they don't already own the previous box set).

Review: Soul Jazz have done it again with the Space Age Dub Special, compiling a selection of dub bits from the legendary Studio One label and its head honcho Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (Dub Specialist). One of the best producers and facilitators in the game, this comp is chock-full of the patented box delays and makeshift tinkerings that made Coxsone particularly famous in his day. Homing in on a space-age theme, one can expect an extra out-of-this-world FX palette here, with snippets of the original tracks' vocal channels phased in and out of their thoroughly effected instrumentals - like eclipsed satellites in orbit.

It's time to track back 20 years to one of the true gems from Soul Jazz's heavyweight range of compilations. Miami Funk takes into the beating heart of the late 60s-early 70s scene hovering around Florida's most famous city, and introduces us to some of the hip underground cats who were laying down the sweetest grooves at that time. Some it's rocking, some of it rolls, at times it's sweet and elsewhere it's nasty, but as you'd expect the quality never dips. This one has been long out of print, and now a limited run is making its way back, with this coloured vinyl edition sure to fly out, so don't sleep!

Secret Superstar Sounds, courtesy of Soul Jazz, offers an eclectic and excellent collection of oddball punk and powerpop rare cuts from little-known bands from the late 70s, including but not limited to The Squares, The Meanies, The Monitors, Plummet Airline, and Krypton Tunes. Falling between the cracks of punk, new wave and post-punk, these unfairly overlooked and forgotten to time gems came from a slew of DIY ethos purists inspired by the messaging of bands like The Desperate Bicycles, Sniffing Glue fanzine and early UK punk labels like Stiff, Chiswick and Rough Trade, recording everything in-house, then sending their recordings to the likes of John Peel and labels with hopes of some airplay or recognition, little of which came. A long-lost micro-genre of unfairly forgotten underground punk (but not punk) gems awaits.

Review: A brand new repro and showcase of one of Studio One's best ever compilations, which has remained long out of print. Formerly only available on Record Store Day as a limited edition 7" box set, this fresh and inductive intro to Studio One's less obvious gemstones - The Studio One Showcase 45 - now hears an expanded edition on 2xLP. Getting into these cuts will inform a veritable levelling-up in your dubbing capacity and appreciatorship. Bob Marley is the most famous feature, with his original Wailers version of 'One Love' serving as a nodal flow-point through which we may discover the vigilant lights of Judah Eskender Tafari ('Danger In Your Eyes'), Joe Higgs ('Dinah') and Liberation Group ('Namibia').

Review: If you assumed it was possible to live without a ska version of the James Bond theme tune then prepare to be taught one of life's great lessons. Assumption is the mother of all f**k ups, basically. Fear not, though, what was a one-off pressing by Soul Jazz for Record Store Day in 2020 is once again available, only this time on gatefold LP rather than five 7" singles. Perhaps not as authentic or ideal for DJs, nevertheless the contents are just as captivating. Celebrating, in part at least, the bond between Bond and the Caribbean - author Ian Fleming lived on Jamaica and several stories are set in the region, and filmed on said island (Dr No, Live & Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, No Time To Die) this is evocative stuff. Stick it on, kick back with a Martini, and picture yourself casing out a mark at some beachside party spot, stunning partner in hand, senses subtly on high alert.

Review: Studio One Power Mix! is a vibrant and essential compilation from Soul Jazz Records that dives deep into the influential sounds of reggae, ska, rocksteady and more, focusing on the late 1970s, 1980s and beyond. This collection captures the essence of Studio One, the legendary Jamaican label founded by Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd, which has been at the forefront of every major development in reggae music since the 1960s. By the late 1970s, Studio One had already established itself as the undisputed leader in the genre, nurturing the careers of icons like Bob Marley & The Wailers, Marcia Griffiths, The Skatalites, and Dennis Brown. During this period, long-standing artists such as Alton Ellis and Jackie Mittoo returned to the label, producing some of their most creatively fulfilling work. Meanwhile, new talents like Sugar Minott, Johnny Osbourne, and Freddie McGregor propelled Studio One into the dancehall era, pushing musical boundaries while honoring the label's roots. The compilation features a dynamic range of tracks that celebrate this golden era, from classic hits to hidden gems. Each song reflects the creativity, innovation, and unmistakable groove that have made Studio One a cornerstone of reggae history. Whether you're a seasoned reggae enthusiast or new to the genre, Studio One Power Mix! offers a great tracklist through the evolution of Jamaican music, celebrating the enduring legacy of one of its most influential labels.

Review: You could probably buy every Soul Jazz compilation known to humankind and come out on top of most other people's record collections. As a label, the crew's ability to track down, rediscover, unearth, and reappraise archive music, and package things up as part of a spellbinding collection of like sounds, is remarkable, and the imprint must be up there with the best curated on the planet. The output is so good, in fact, that here we are pushing a reissue of the 2002 compilation, In The Beginning There Was Rhythm. Pieced together by Stuart Baker and Adrian Self, it's a wonderful trip into the deceptively varied world of UK post punk during its nascent, formative years. Informed by dub, psychedelia, punk, synth, samples and more, it's a celebration of a genre that proves you could spend all day listening and not really hear the same type of tune twice.

Review: A true staple of the Soul Jazz compilation canon, Studio One Rockers originally came out in 2001 and has remained an authoritative overview of the Studio One sound ever since. As one of the major powerhouses of Jamaica's music industry during those heady years of ska, rocksteady, reggae and dancehall, Studio One's legacy deserves acknowledgement from anyone with even a passing interest in the music. This collection takes in legends like Horace Andy, Dawn Penn, Johnny Osbourne and Jackie Mittoo, and shines a light on many other iconic artists with that perfect balance of broad appeal and deep-rooted knowledge that Soul Jazz nail when they pull a collection together.
