Where Do We Go From Here
Review: Taken from their last album Victim Of Love, both "Confusion" and "Where Do We Go From Here?" represent Charles and the Menahan Street Band's bright, tight funk credentials with powerful glee. The former is an unashamed funk stomper (think Sam Moore) with big psychedelic splashes on the chorus while the latter is a much slower, moodier jam where a bold guitar riff glides us into much more emotional pastures. Outstanding contemporary funk soul.

LaRose Jackson - "How Did I Get Here?" (2:39)
Menahan Street Band - "How Did I Get Here?" (2:40)
Review: The superbly classy Daptone label comes on strong with another perfect formed 7" of retro soul. This time, the label's in house crew Menahan Street Band provide their famously authentic grooves, with big horns, rolling licks and drawn out leads on 'How Did I Get Here?' which on the a-side has vocals from LaRose Jackson. Soaring high and filled with rich soul, it's another timeless tune. On the flip is the instrumental. It's a story telling tune with some cosmic synth work and nice old school tambourines for an old/new fusion that gets you movin'.

Midnight Morning (2:58)
Stepping Through Shadow (1:59)
Review: Daptone does a brilliantly job of serving up new soul sounds that are rich with the sound of yesterday. They utterly authentic tunes that you'd be sure were 40 odd years old if you didn't know otherwise, and one of the many jewels in the label's crown is the Menahan Street Band. Here they're back to their best with a tidy 7" of heart aching blue eyed instrumental soul. 'Midnight Morning' is forlorn but hopefully with its sorrowful trumpets and psyched out guitar riffs while 'Stepping Through Shadow' goes super slow. The horns hang heavy in the air and the tinkling keys are heart broken.

The Stranger (feat Victor Benavides) (2:58)
Black Velvet (2:58)
Review: The irresistible Menahan Street Band is one of the core acts on the Daptone label and they never fail to serve up heart-melting sounds full of beautiful melancholy. Here they make another triumphant return to the label with none other than Los Yesterdays front man Victor Benavides in tow. He guests on 'The Stranger' in which his vocals plead and convey real emotional pain over a spare, slow motion rhythm. It slow rises to a soulful high that has a bittersweet feeling that will keep you coming back for more. 'Black Velvet' is another moody instrumental ballad that was the original inspiration for the vocal version on the a-side.

Mikey General - "It Choose Me" (3:14)
Earl Maxton - "Prattle" (3:57)
Review: Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah is the venerated producer beyond this new toast from Jamaican reggae and dancehall singer Mikey General. The pair came together during the pandemic and found plenty of common musical ground as they throw it back to the early 1980s analog rub-a-dub style. The backing track has been used in years gone by but Mikey adds his own spin to it here. He has been a mainstay in the scene since the 1980s and has fans in New York, London and Jamaica. On the flip of this one is an instrumental and dub mix, 'Prattle,' which features keysman Earl Maxton on clavinet.

He Upset Your Dreams
Listen
Review: Daptone bring you 'He Upset Your Dreams' from Hank "Soul Man" Mullen for their new reissue imprint, to share their love of some of their favourite rare and unreleased soulful tracks. The A side is an up-tempo groover concerning the saddest subject of all; not one, but two broken hearts. This is an effort from the Avengers on the Audel imprint out of Buffalo NY. The band formed in the mid-60s and toured a dynamic show with three very different vocalists: Hank Mullen, Moe Jones and Carlena Weaver; they released two singles in 1970 on their own label. In the 70s the group toured as backing band for Eddie Floyd, Arthur Conley, Betty Wright and Betty Swan. Sadly, soon after the records' release, Hank Mullen, then in his mid twenties, died tragically due to a heart attack.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Minor dent and creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Florida's Charles Bradley is often referred to as "the screaming eagle of soul", a tag that we absolutely and wholeheartedly agree with, particularly on this latest EP for Daptone. Although Bradley was born in 1948 and has been making music for donkey's years, the artist came to prominence in the early 2000s, and has been on fire ever since. For starters, it's near impossible to find someone making this sort of soul music in 2016, and love ballads as powerful as "Good To Be Back Home", "Nobody But You", and pretty much every track on here, are not easy to come by. Secondly, we haven't heard an artist as passionate about his country since "God Bless America", a beautiful reminder that the world isn't all that bad, and there are plenty of positive and uncorrupted minds still out there today in the music scene. An unmissable album, for anyone.

Review: Big repress alert! This is the much-loved debut album from the Menahan Street Band, which is a talented collaboration of musicians including the great Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, Antibalas and the Budos Band. Led by producer Thomas Brenneck (who has worked before with Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band and also Amy Winehouse), the record was recorded in the bedroom of his Menahan Street apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It is a soulful, instrumental exploration that showcases the immense talent of the group and draws on all of their diverse influences to create a unique and captivating sound that pushes the boundaries of instrumental music into sumptuous and soulful worlds.
