Review: He may have been at it for more than 30 years, but New Jersey hero Kerri Chandler is still capable of delivering fine, life-affirming music with soul. 'Caged Bird', featuring vocals from South African rising star Nae, is one of the legendary artist's most ear-catching and soul-enriching efforts for some time. For proof, check his 'Full Vocal Media Mix', where Nae's pretty, picturesque vocals, bittersweet piano refrains and sultry strings rise above a crunchy, unfussy, hot-stepping deep house beats. The accompanying remix package is predictably strong too. Italian producer Moplen steps up first, opting for bouncier, NJ-influenced beats, squelchy synth bass and some rather lovely electric piano chords. Atjazz handles the B-side, delivering vocal and instrumental takes that up the tempo, showcase tech-tinged deep house sounds and cannily loop up Chandler's simmering strings.

For volume one, Chandler has selected missives initially released digitally in the middle of the last decade. Review: Synkronized is just three releases deep now but is already an assured and reliable outlet for fresh house sounds. This latest offering takes the form of a various artists EP and opens with the brilliantly spaced out electronic house of'Lorenzo Chiabotti & Just_Me's 'Darko FM'. It's a silky one with balmy pads that encourage you to dive right in. Martin M's 'Pleasure Minds' then strips things backed to a nice and empty but rolling groove and on the flip Chad Andrew & Imbue get crunchy with their broken beats. That leaves just Den Haas with his mellifluous and pillow deep house cosmic delight, 'The Spot.'

Review: Quantize's second offering is another irresistibly lovely house EP with funky and soulful vibes to spare. It's a varied bag of artists at the controls with Michele Chiavarini going first with the throwback vocals and piano-laced house grooves of 'Let Me See You Clap Your Hands'. Review: Sol Power Sound is back in a big way with a reissue and remix EP from the legendary Nigerian Ju-Ju king, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey. The double A-side EP features 'Eyi Yato', a tune from 1981, that captures Chief Commander and his band at their absolute funkiest. It's as if there's something in the name itself - 'Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey' - that commands an almost godlike, daresay tyrannical command over each conjunctive performance here; every one of the All-Stars' parts play back as though they've puppeteered to an autocratic degree, resulting in a funky tightness that only obedience to the most just of authorities can muster. The original, with its boinging jews' harps and wahhing guitars, is the patent highlight; but we're sure you'll be no less pleased to learn of the (double-time! dub disco!) Mad Professor flip (...!) that's on there too (winky face).

Review: 'Breathiness' is one dance music texture not so oft trodden, but that's just what's been achieved on this new tech EP 'Mysteries Of The Universe', pondered by Chris Stussy of Up The Stuss fame. Neon cities bustle and flying cars whizz past, as vocoded vocals caress the low end on 'Hundu Boulevard'. 'Cant' Escape' meanwhile dubs things out further with janky funk and inescapable vocal whispers. A strong new one from the Amsterdam pusher.

Review: American artist Chris Stussy has risen through the ranks to become a real new school house leader in 2021. Proof of that comes from the fact that he now makes a big step up with an EP on the Kaos label run by the one and only Kerri Chandler. He serves up his signature spaced out sounds across four silky cuts. 'Central Frenzy' gets underway with balmy pads, 'Riva De Biasio' brings nice bendy synths and tropical colours, 'Deviant Shadow' picks up the pace and offers up a sublime tech house sound and 'A Glimmer Of Hope' closes in pensive deep house fashion. Review: The Manchester producer, already known for his work with Hot Creations and Cuttin' Headz, channels a refined, magnetic energy here that solidifies his rising-star status. Back for his eighth EP since breaking on to the scene, AJ Christou makes a triumphant full EP debut on Crosstown Rebels with Desire, a sleek two-tracker that feels both sharply contemporary and deeply rooted in classic house vibes. The title track is a smouldering cut built around a throbbing bassline, crisp, polished percussion and a teasing, seductive vocal that coils through the mix. It's a slow, deliberate burn that feels primed for those moments deep into a set when the dancefloor is locked in and the lights are low. Flipping over to 'Patience', Christou leans into a more textured, intricate sound. The drums are playful yet tight, driving a track that's equally effective but more subtle in its progression, with layered synths and understated melodies gliding beneath. Both tracks show Christou's talent for crafting grooves that are as detailed as they are danceable.

Review: Following releases on Kontent, Enfasi and Midas Touch, Copenhagen's Andrei Crivoi aka Chrivu returns with his intoxicating blend of minimal, dub techno and tech house on the Transfusion EP. It begins with the cavernous and glacial late night groove that is the title track, which receives a rolling and hypnotic makeover by Rominimal stalwart Robert Apetrei (Dubsons) later on the flip. The moody and tripped-out microhouse of 'Questline' heads to the after hours, and the entrancing polyrhythms of 'Pseudonym' call to mind the work of Barac or Vincentiulian.

Review: Sweat It Out Records kicks off their tasty Sweat Sampler series with their first volume, cutting niftily across four exceptionally sweaty bops, spanning tongue-in-cheek deep tech reworks and downtempo disco delights. First off is the dream team of Cid and Havoc & Lawn, whom together deliver a hilariously effective house version of America's 'A Horse With No Name'; this is shortly followed by Saturday Love, Kon and Furious's 'Come Out', a rejigged nu-disco samosa packed with some rare vocal spices; then there's 'Give It To Me' by Marco Lys and Ben Miller, a bass-driven bouncer unafraid of lasershot winddowns, injunctive vocals and risers; and finally, there's Set Mo's 'Could I Be', the anthem of the bunch, whose buildup and drop is alarming, affecting, cumulatively awe-striking.

Review: German mainstay Cinthie offers up three varied and vital house weapons to relaunch her label after a two and a half year hiatus. Riffing off her primary footing in the scene as a DJ, Cinthie is one such artist whose recorded music splashes have to be just that - splashes - in order to really convince the world of her narrative and selective decks-bound prowess. A three-tracker of thumping, swelling, visceral proportions, 'You Know How' kicks proceedings off on a note of functionality, before plunging us into translucent, pane-cracked vats of ultra-processed, ready-to-imbibe liquid piano house bliss. After the inaugural ingestion, we're met with the fluid wordless poetry of 'Mellifluous' before ending on the excessively percussive square-root-of-zero, 'Can You?'. Perhaps a question best left unanswered, much better danced to.

Review: Cinthie returns to Heist with another stormer of an EP, packed with peak-time tackle and knowing nods to her rave roots. Following the titanic success of 2023's 'Piano Heaven' i also on Heist i the Berlin-based maverick had plenty to live up to on 'Get Up', and she certainly doesn't disappoint. 'Deep Inside Love' is a euphoric house pumper with uplifting keys and big room swagger, while 'Higher' leans into the rave nostalgia that typifies much of today's underground club milieu i all stabs, vocals and hands-in-the-air intention. 'Get Up' drops the tempo just a touch, offering a warm, dubby breather laced with classic house moods. Rounding it off is a slick remix from Demi Riquisimo, who gives 'Higher' a semi-retro twist. As ever with Cinthie, this is club music with heart, soul and a large dose of fun.

Review: As her releases for Aus and fantastic DJ Kicks mix have proved, Cinthie Christl knows a thing or two about classic-sounding, peak-time ready house music. It's little surprise, then, to discover that her Heist Recordings debut is full to bursting with nostalgic, retro-futurist treats. She begins by doffing a cap to the dreamy chords, jazzy synth-bass and rushing piano stabs of turn-of-the-90s Italo-house on 'Won't U Take Me', before reaching for more sparkling, life-affirming riffs on the marginally more driving (and accurately titled) 'Piano Heaven'. That track gets a chunkier, weightier and more energetic makeover by St David on the flip, while 'Masterplan' is a high-octane tribute to Dance Mania style ghetto-house with a timeless deep house twist.

Review: For their tenth release, the Hanover-based label Malonian re-sign the now firmly established Andrei Ciubuc with the new 'Gotta Have House' EP. Since 2015, Ciubuc has helped bolster the Romanian spirit in minimal house and techno, releasing seven EPs for the likes of Cuplet, Tooloop, UVAR, and one other release for Malonian (their debut release), totting up to seven releases besides this one so far. Boasting a heavy rotation by many a major league DJ, 'Gotta Have House' is a synaptic sonic papier mache, the evident talent with which its beats and ambiences were compiled proving the reason for its becoming a favourite on the circuit. Echoes of deep Chicago house are firmly evident on the swelling chordisms heard on the A2, 'One Of A Kind', while the radiophonic jumps and jitters of 'Gotta Work It Out' prefer down-the-phone-line soul samples and sterling vocal science; 'Baba', finally, is the brukky closer of choice, and our future-facing favourite.

Review: Shadow Pressings hits its stride with release number three, featuring Detroit's own Mike Agent X Clark. A stalwart of the Beatdown movement, Mike's contributions to the scene are legendary, and this EP only adds to his already impressive catalogue. 'In the House Club' leads the charge, a minimal yet impactful track that showcases spoken word from fellow Detroit artist Dr. Tinglefingers. The raw, unpolished feel captures the essence of true Detroit house, with a stripped-back approach that leaves space for every element to shine. Jimpster steps in on remix duties, building on the original with a subtle, yet effective touch. His rework maintains the track's integrity while injecting a deeper groove, with added Rhodes stabs and warm textures that push the energy forward. On the flip side, 'Get Up' serves as a proper homage to the stripped-back, bass-driven sounds that Ron Hardy would have spun at the Muzic Box. Its simplicity is its strength, providing a hypnotic pulse that's impossible to resist. Wrapping up the release, 'Fresh Air' stays true to the underground, offering a deep, minimal cut that speaks directly to the heads. Mike Agent X Clark proves once again why he remains a revered figure in the scene, delivering a release that's primed for both the discerning selector and the dancefloor devotee.

Review: Upstairs Asylum is kicking off the year in some style with a couple of killer new EPs. This one is the first in what is presumably a new series to showcase the talents of the Motor City. Mike Clark & Marcus Harris get things underway with 'Hey' which has a subtly uplifting feel thanks to the bright, sustained chords and cuddly drums. Santonio Echols's 'Piano In The Light' (DJ Emanuell Echols mix) is laidback, playful deep house with magical chord work and Brian Kage brings his classy depths to the smooth grooves of 'This Saturday Night.' Ryan Sadorus brings things to a close with the smoky 'Down Below.'

Review: Spiritual endurance tester Joaquin "Joe" Claussell returns for another topup for the Yellow Jackets series. Volume Eight is yet another heliotropic hummer, with the two ingenious progressive, naturalisti-house cuts found thereon (two new versions of 'Erratic Telepathy' and 'Who Do You Love', the latter by Josh Honeycomb) bringing much tweezy and brain-furthering motif to the two-side mix form. The first track is especially impressive for the counterpoint set up between the right-panned marimba and the left-panned filter-synth, the latter of which dances like a magic firefly against the former's lemni-spatial mallet-bed. The B-sider is much more soulful, bringing interspersive vocals and subtle hat layering to a an all-out funky freakout.

Review: New York legend and Body & Soul man Joe Claussell is first to land on this new Brownswood Remix Edition as he drops a Sacred Rhythm mix of his own tune with Cuban singer Dayme Arocena. It offers a fresh perspective on the original timeless composition with drawn-out drums leading to a signature spiritual rapture. On the flip is a dynamic reinterpretation of Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura Band by German artist Motor City Drum Ensemble, who now goes under his birth name. He brings some dusty house drums to make for a perfectly flavoursome sound for outdoor dancing.

'Wos' is first up and has minimal grooves with languid guitar melodies worming their way through the beats under subtle scratches and tight raps. 'All Of That' kicks off with the sort of scintillating, dusty drum work that defines early Chicago house. 'Humble Groove' paris more raw hi hats and thudding kicks with charged-up synth stabs. On the flip side, the tension continues with 'Lost World' which is another percussive, layered up cut with glistening drums and smeared pads. 'Mid-season' is the final hurrah and one that has more pace to it, but also some lovely retro-future melodies.

Review: Earlier this year, we were treated to two top-notch Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell remixes of 'Inner Light', one of the standout cuts from Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's fantastic collaborative album People Need People. Here we're treated to two more fresh takes on cuts from that essential LP. On side A, DJ Spinna gives his 'galactic soul' take on 'New World Shuffle', re-imagining the track as a languid but floor-friendly fusion of cosmic soul, neo-boogie, deep house and contemporary jazz-funk electronics. Equally as impressive is former Ron Trent protege Anthony Nicholson's remix of 'Inner Light', where twinkling jazz pianos, spacey synth sounds, evocative synth-strings and Raashan Ahmad's fine spoken word vocals rise above a sumptuous and luxurious deep house groove.

Review: Makin Moves pull another funny on us; their multi-volume exclusives series is called "Unreleased", despite each release in the series, by taut definition, constituting a release. But to call a track "unreleased", when it decidedly now isn't, does, we admit, help mythologise it to the extent that it makes it more desirable; the proviso here being, of course, that the tracks in this series are relegated to vinyl first, with no promises made as to a potential future digitisation. So do New Yorker Conway Kasey and fellow artist Johnny Melek deck out the final-vinyl front side with 'Jazz Fest' and 'Myrrr', the latter especially thrilling us with a formant-shifted Juliet Mendosa on vocals. On the other hand, Reggie Steele and David Harness enter into a nice remix interplay with 'Vulnerable', piggybacking on the original 2024 release's establishing anodynes.

This series is something of an annual end-of-year tradition by now (OK, it's arriving a touch late) and this one hits as hard as any with five tracks taken from the full and standout compilation. It is two great remixes of classic RNT material that gets things underway with Ezel offering a dub of Cor.ece and Bruce Leroys sublime deep hose mix of Guinu, then JKriv's 'Better Than Her' is a fat bottomed bit of deep cut electro funk and elsewhere Kim Anh gets raw and cosmic, and Cody Currie's 'Ghost' is broken beat perfection.
