Review: Purple Disco Machine makes the sort of warm, colourful and feel-good sounds that have united festival crowds all over the world since he first broke through. For his latest tune he has worked with UK chart-topper Duke Dumont on a single, 'Something On My Mind' which melts nostalgic disco goodness with fresh and contemporary production. It is jin indie-tinged cut with vintage synths and groove-driven basslines with vocals from rising band Nothing But Thieves, whom Purple Disco Machine remixed not so long ago. This is another crossover hit in the making for disco-revivalists Purple Disco Machine and it comes on a 12" that is limited to 300 copies.

Review: Frampton Comes Alive? Jeff Mills Live At The Liquid Room? Pah! There is only contender in the park when it comes to the best live album of all time and that's AC/DC's 1978 classic, recorded at the Glasgow Apollo and featuring their original vocalist Bon Scott. From the deft riffing of opener 'Riff Raff' - recently covered by men of the moment Black Midi - to the 12 bar frenzy of traditional closer 'Rocker' via big hitting groovers like 'Bad Boy Boogie' and 'Problem Child' and audience participation-fests like 'The Jack' and 'Whole Lotta Rosie', this is dripping in crowd atmospherics, improvised solos and big walls of riffs. Just about as great an advert for live music as ever existed.

Looking for a new bassist, after a disagreement over whether to pick Manfred Mann's Colin Pattenden, the band agree on Cliff Williams, who would remain in place until 2003. Recording what became Powerage, their fifth studio album, Atlantic Records soon complained there wasn't a sellable lead single. 'Rock 'n' Roll Damnation' took form, one of the group's outliers, which comes without standard guitar solo but with maracas and hand claps. While this proved divisive among die hard fans, the album itself has gold waiting to be discovered deeper down. 'Gimme A Bullet', for example, has been cited as the finest track the late Bon Scott would write, his lyrical flair and deft metaphorical wit shining through on a tune that won't let up. This was his final LP, and tragically three years later he was no longer with us, marking an end to the group's iconic first chapter.

Review: The fourth and final studio album from the now disbanded French electronic duo, Daft Punk, Random Access Memory gets a re-release on Sony complete with an exclusive poster and 16-page booklet. Featuring hit single, 'Get Lucky', this album is already considered a defining release of the 2010s pop/electronic landscape.

Review: Miles Davis' performance at the Paris Jazz Festival, Salle Pleyel, on October 1, 1964, is one of the many pivotal moments he was involved with in jazz history. The live recording features Davis' "Second Great Quintet," including Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Tony Williams (drums) and Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone). This quintet pushed the boundaries of jazz with its innovative approach to improvisation and rhythm and the concert showcases Davis' evolving sound as he transitioned from his earlier modal work into more abstract, avant-garde territory. The setlist features dynamic interpretations of jazz standards and Davis' originals, both highlighting the ensemble's remarkable chemistry and individual brilliance.

Review: The debut album by hip-hop duo Dead Prez was released in 2000 and quickly earned critical acclaim. Praised as a "return to politically conscious rap," it drew comparisons to acts like Public Enemy, Brand Nubian and The Coup. Review: The vast array of Depeche Mode originals cover plenty of ground and many years of hard and critically acclaimed work. As such they're a gold mine for artists looking to add their own spin and plenty of the most ear-grabbing of those radio, dub and club mixes are collected together here on a rather epic seven slabs of wax in one bumper box set with a poster and digital download. Works by contemporary artists like Trentemoller and Justus Kohncke sit next to techno titans like Ben Klock, trance mainstays such as Sander Van Doorn and even EDM stars like Laidback Luke. A varied mix with something for everyone.

Review: When Depeche Mode teamed up with Anton Corbijn to make some music videos, few could have predicted the end results. If you ever thought there’s an artful consistency to the Mode’s music videos from the late 80s and early 90s, it’s because Corbijn filmed them all on a shoestring budget on his trusty Super 8 camera. The resulting pieces were strung together as vignettes forming a larger cinematic experience which was released in two instalments - Strange and Strange Too. Originally released on VHS and Laserdisc, the films have finally been bundled together, digitally restored and presented in this DVD box set with bonus material.

Review: It's hard to know whether to bother reviewing this release at all, or simply opt for the following summary: Depeche Mode, titans of synth and one of the UK's most important bands of the late-20th Century (and today), offer a vast collection of tracks from their 2005 album, Playing the Angel, remixed by a host of massive names from the dance and electronic world.

Still not convinced? OK, how about this - Depeche Mode x Jacques Le Cont, M83, Sasha, Tiefschwarz, Tiga, Michael Mayer, Metope, Alter Ego, Robag Wruhme, Goldfrapp, Telex and more. With so much happening and such variety on offer within, it's probably best to hit play on the lot and see what takes your fancy, smart money being on all of them. Either that, or just go with your gut and buy before you try.

Review: 32 years on from the release of their debut album Speak and Spell, Basildon's finest drop their 14th full length. While there are echoes of their eyeliner-wearing, synth-bothering futurist past (see the glitchy "My Little Universe" and early New Order-ish "Broken", where Dave Gahan sings about 'dreaming of the future'), for the most part Delta Machine finds them in grinchy synth-rock mode, presumably shaking their fists at passing youngsters like a gang of grumpy old men. Thankfully, they're still capable of great things - "Soothe My Soul" has echoes of "Personal Jesus" - and there's enough to suggest there's some life in the old dogs yet.

Review: Released in 1990, the Canadian 'Titantic' legend's ninth - and first English-language - album, was her formal introduction to a broader international audience. While later albums would showcase her powerhouse balladry, Unison is rooted in late 80s and early 90s pop, dance and soft rock, highlighting a different, more youthful side of Dion. This reissue's title track, 'Unison', is a bright, upbeat number, blending slick production with a catchy, danceable groove. Dion's voice is confident but not overpowering, riding the rhythm with an effortless charm. 'Where Does My Heart Beat Now', arguably the album's peak, is a soaring ballad that previews the emotional intensity she would later become famous for i her vocals swelling with a mix of vulnerability and strength. Tracks like 'If Love Is Out the Question' and 'Have a Heart' lean into soft rock territory, filled with shimmering synths and polished guitar work, highlighting Dion's adaptability across genres. Meanwhile, 'The Last to Know' presents a bittersweet mid-tempo groove, layered with heartfelt emotion. Unison captures an artist in transition i blending dance-pop sheen with emotional depth. It's a polished debut that lays the groundwork for Dion's meteoric rise, offering glimpses of the superstar vocalist she was destined to become.

Review: 'The show must go on' would be a fitting subtitle for Celine Dion's new Amazon Prime Video documentary. Charting her life, accomplishments, and often hidden difficulties, the overall message is clear: very little is going to stand in the way of someone this determined. Even viewers who don't consider themselves fans have been won over, with 100% of reviews on movie critic aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes offering positive feedback. It's certainly rousing stuff, with Dion's ongoing battle with stuff-person syndrome - a rare neurological disorder characterised by increasing rigidity - a key reason why you're bound to get off the couch feeling like most things might be possible after all, just as the closing credits roll. As for the soundtrack, it's a big, concert-hall worth selection of her most powerful anthems and album tracks, from 'The Power of Love' to 'My Heart Will Go On', many of which take on new resonance after watching the film.

Review: To celebrate the one-year anniversary of provocative rap and hip-hop star Doja Cat's critically acclaimed album Scarlet, this deluxe vinyl edition 'Scarlet 2 CLAUDE' is now served up on bone vinyl. This version includes 24 tracks and features hits like 'Attention,' 'Paint The Town Red,' 'Agora Hills,' and 'OKLOSER.' 'Paint The Town Red' is the real standout and a firm favourite with many having spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, which made it the first rap song to top the chart last year. It also led the Billboard Global 200 for four weeks and after that in February 2024, the superb 'Agora Hills' reached No. 1 on Top 40 Radio, marking Doja Cat's eighth chart-topper.

Review: Although artists often claim not to read their reviews, Doja Cat clearly does. Scarlet, her fourth album, is a direct reaction to criticism of her rapping and the pop-leaning nature of her later work. So while she does sing at times, it's her sassy, confident and dextrous verses - alongside beats and basslines rooted in r&b and hip-hop, with plenty of high-profile sample flipping thrown in (see recent single 'Paint The Town Red', which utilises elements of Dione Warwick classic 'Walk On By'). The results are undoubtedly remarkable and -in her words - "masculine", with highlights including the strutting and insanely weighty 'Demons' (whose lyrics are a direct attack on critics and misogynistic male rappers), the Rotary Connection-goes-r&b shuffle of 'Attention' and the deep, head-nodding wooziness of 'Balut'.

Review: Divisive in a big way - with outcry in Mexico over national stereotypes and concern from the LGBTQIA+ community due to its portrayal of gender transition - nevertheless Emelia Perez made a massive impact in the movie world when it landed in August 2024. Now the second most nominated movie in Golden Globe history, it tells the story of a cartel boss who enlists a lawyer to help him disappear and transition into a woman. All of which is told in a musical style, with as many tongues in cheek on screen as there are dramatic moments. The soundtrack, then, is a combination of original score composed by Clement Ducol with French singer Camille, and numbers and speeches performed by the cast, which includes Selena Gomez, Mark Ivan, Zoe SaldaNa and Karla Sofia Gascon.

Review: It's been a while since we've heard from high-end hip-hop helmers PartyNextDoor and Drake. The two superstars usually work together to make ethereal stopovers on otherwise damn hard rap records, especially by the latter former Young Money megastar. Though the pair have never worked on a full-length album together before, Some Sexy Songs 4 U tots up to the third in an unsaid series of Drake collab albums, following ones between 21 Savage and Future. Dealing in themes of sexual jealousy and ongoing personal feuds - especially amid tumultuous fallouts between the larger private-jet-bound artist and various smaller up-and-comers such as Ice Spice - the record offers a stylistic range on an wide trap smorgasbord, working in Mexican rock samples and alt-rock progressions.
