Review: Top shelf lyricists Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman come together here to show off all their skills. They are revered for pushing the envelope with a wide range of topics, moods and grooves covered, always in-depth and with real coherence. They came together initially through mutual appreciation for each other's styles and then built a strong musical connection. It shows here across a bunch of super tight joints, killer rhymes and sweet beats.

Review: Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns this time under the alias Africans with Mainframes. With fellow Chicagoan Noleian Reusse they have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now. The KMT LP is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental electronic music today.

Review: Two titans of African music come together for a collaboration that will sadly never be repeated after the passing of the late Hugh Masekela. Allen's instantly recognisable drumming and Masekela's iconic trumpet are a match made in heaven - after all their paths first crossed back in the 70s thanks to Fela Kuti's galvanizing energy. Forget the throwback stuff trying to capture the spirit of the originators, this IS the originators sounding cool and deadly in every way. Funk lovers, Afrobeat heads, curious ears and dancing souls take heed - this right here is an unmissable transmission from two grandmasters in their field.

Review: A Strangely Isolated Place focuses on sparse electronica and drone music, and its founder Ryan Griffin has been pushing abstract sounds by new and exciting talent since 2008. Arovane, who has already appeared on the label with a bundle of devious outsider sounds, teams up with newcomer Hior Chronik (Mu-Nest, Kitchen) for a collaborative LP, In Between. As the name suggests, the album feels like a collection of sounds for contemplative moments, latching heavy loads of electronic sound design together with ingeniously placed field recordings. These recordings, however, aren't abstract layers of fuzz, but instead recall the sounds of nature and the passing of time. The sea, the air, the forests and beyond. Wonderfully meditative and highly recommended to anyone who wants to experience true tranquility.

Review: Tension sees Ethio-jazz innovator Mulatu Astatke join forces with Tel Aviv's Hoodna Orchestra, creating a vibrant fusion of Astatke's signature sound with the orchestra's Afro funk dynamism. This collaboration is a masterclass in blending classic Ethio-jazz with contemporary influences. The album kicks off with 'Tension,' a track that infuses Astatke's enchanting vibraphone with a powerful rhythm section, driven by Matan Assayag's energetic drumming and a compelling brass motif. 'Major' later introduces a joyous, swinging groove, showcasing the orchestra's chemistry and Drabkin's stellar organ solo. Tracks like 'Hatula' and 'Yashan' capture a blend of intricate melodies and traditional Ethio-jazz flavours, while 'Delilah' reverently nods to Mulatu's early Latin-jazz roots. The album concludes with 'Dung Gate', a slow, mesmerising piece featuring Birenbaum's layered percussion and the brass section's evocative presence. Tension stands out as both a tribute to Astatke's legacy and a groundbreaking exploration in Ethio-jazz, marking a high point in the Hoodna Orchestra's evolving sound.

Review: Jules Buckley is a Grammy award-winning composer, curator and conductor who has linked up with long time collaborative partners Chris Wheeler, Heritage Orchestra and percussion collective Ghost-Note for this lively new full length. The record has been two years in the making and pays homage to the pillars of hip hop and mainstays of the breaking scene, but with plenty of added flair. There are plenty of dance floor ready breaks, as well as more airy and upbeat soul groovers like the excellent 'Space Funk.' Though the backbones of these tunes follow familiar genres rules, the flair on top is what makes them so special.

The Kallikatsou Recordings (heavyweight vinyl LP)
Cat: AI 07. Rel: 22 Mar 17

Ambient/Drone
Part 1 (13:59)
Part 2 (14:00)
Review: Last year, Astral Industries released The Bamboo Recordings, a sublime, non-stop ambient voyage from obscure Dutch outfit The Chi Factory based around recordings Hanyo van Oosterom made while living in a cave on the Greek island of Palmos in the early 1980s. This follow-up contains sounds, textures and musical elements recording during the same period, which van Oosterom has been tinkering with, on and off, since the early '90s. Like its predecessor, The Kallikatsou Recordings - named in tribute to the "sacred mountain" the producer lived beneath on Palmos - joins the dots between Eno style ambience, Stockhausen style sound collage, the sample-heavy brilliance of The KLF's Chill Out, the humidity of Finis Africae, and contemporary drone productions. If anything, it's even better than The Bamboo Recordings.

Red Lantern At The Kallikatsou (part 1) (20:56)
Red Lantern At The Kallikatsou (part 2) (20:55)
Review: Two epic ambient journeys from an underrated hero of the underground. Hanyo van Oosterom is a musician and promoter from Rotterdam. He was part of Chi (1984 - 1987), Byzantium (1997 - 1998) and One Cent People since 2002. He has never met Rod Modell (Deepchord) in person, but they have met through music. Story has it that Modell is said to have found an obscure cassette of Chi music and sent it to Astral Industries - which paved the way for the release of 'The Original Recordings' in 2016. Since then, they have exchanged ideas and music. Van Oosterom sent Modell a preview of 'The Kallikatsou Recordings' which he liked it and inspired the idea for a remix of 'Lanterns'. He sent the first sketches to him, but they ended up in the wrong inbox. Months later he responded, apparently saying he loved them so much that they needed to be released. Van Oosterom is said to have used lo-fi approach on these tracks: manipulating the samples, time-stretching, tempo and pitch-shifting, mixing different layers and using effects in addition to field recordings, voices and samples from his early cassettes.

Review: The Moon and the Melodies, a collaboration between Cocteau Twins and ambient pioneer Harold Budd, stands as a unique gem in both artists' discographies. Originally released in 1986, this ethereal album is now being reissued on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Robin Guthrie. Unlike anything else the Cocteau Twins ever produced, this record blends their dreamlike soundscapes with Budd's serene, improvisational piano work. The result is an atmospheric journey, at once intimate and expansive. Tracks like 'Sea, Swallow Me' shine with Elizabeth Fraser's otherworldly vocals, intertwined with Guthrie's shimmering guitar and Raymonde's grounding bass, creating a sound that feels both familiar and entirely unique. Instrumentals like 'Memory Gongs' and 'The Ghost Has No Home' highlight Budd's delicate piano, enhanced by the band's signature ambient textures. The album is a study in contrasts, vocal tracks sit alongside instrumentals, each contributing to a cohesive yet diverse listening experience. For fans, this reissue is a chance to revisit a pivotal moment in the evolution of dream pop and ambient music. The album's enduring appeal is evident in its continued influence in social media. The Moon and the Melodies remains a shining light that can happen when artists from different realms come together to create something truly timeless.

Review: After Hamid kicked off the H+ label last year he returns with an intriguing double pack that draws on a wide variety of collaborators to turn out some truly innovative leftfield house music sounds. There's an overarching theme of micro house hovering around Methods For The Madness Vol 1, but it's far from run of the mill stuff. The opening cut featuring Josh Tweek is a sparkling, swinging affair that piles on the funk and the delirious effects, while Jesse Morrison's own turn on the closing track winds up in a haunting, abstract slice of refined reduction.

Review: Deep Space Orchestra's Use of Weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split EP, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. This expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. DSO's beautiful and surprisingly fragile "Mendoza" leads the way, with 7 Citizens calming, alien house groover "Fatum" close behind. Arguably best of all, though, is Other Worlds' "Coldname ELD", a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, Head High style pianos. It is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the Detroit-included Haku.

Review: With an additional run of three club-minded MASSE remix 12"s released this week by Ostgut Ton, the hugely influential label will round up their soundtrack to the Berghain ballet with a collectors box set of six stand out scores from last year's production, six of which pressed to vinyl, with a further 16 on CD. Phillip Sollmann & Marcel Fengler's Din collaboration provide some of the more experimental highlights with the Dettmann-esque "Aetas" and the industrial ambience "Creation" and "Generation", while as you'd expect Henrik Schwarz delivers splashes of flamenco, classical music and rocky pop to the compilation that's unrivalled in production by any other producer making techno.

Review: Emotional Response returns to Dusseldorf with a compilation of the music emanating out of the Diskant label over some 7 EPs between 2009-2014. Featuring the productions of The Durian Brothers, Harmonious Thelonious and Don't DJ, their unique polyrhythmic percussive sound of the label is highlighted across this special double album. Legend goes it was discovering the first Diskant release on the wall of Honest Jons store back in 2009 that became a prime influences in the creation of Emotional Response. Born out of the early years of Salon Des Amateurs, the Diskant label was set up as a vehicle for the music and member's music of The Durian Brothers, namely Florian Meyer (Don't DJ), Stefan Schwander (Harmonious Thelonious) and Marc Matter. Coming together from their own music backgrounds to explore a new experimental polyrhythmic para-funk via distorted electronics. Using specially prepared turntables, hypnotic rhythmic patterns, noise and sequencing they have created a dense and fuzzy excess that over four sides of vinyl is here now presented as a retrospective, but not an end, to highlight their unique sound.

Review: Aguieere's next album is a fine coming together of Antwerp synthesist David Edren and Tokyo minimalist Hiroki Takahashi. They make a nice and natural connection it seems as they explore a wide range of subtle electronics, and contemplative synth-scapes and explore the potency of restraint, open space and sonic patience. This is artful ambient throughout with the likes of the first tune 'Dusk Decorum' setting the tone with wide open vistas and twinkling, starry horizons. There is plenty of great synth colorisation in these tunes as they ebb and flow throughout the orchestral lullaby of 'Stalactime', which is a real highlight.

Review: Now here's a rarity for you. Not even many of the most committed megafans know that Brian Eno, Holger Czukay and J.Peter Schwalm, accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, performed a secret live music show, outside the esteemed Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, situated in the city of Bonn, in August 1998. Forming a part of the opening party of Eno's Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation, this furtively-recorded album hears an exclusive slice of incidental "high-altitude food music", of course made during Brian Eno's airborne ambient era. Now reissued via Gronland, this five-piece cut of sophisti-ambi-krauttronica makes for a welcome surprise.

Review: On the face of it, this full-length collaboration between ambient legend Brian Eno and Underworld's Karl Hyde is an enticing proposition. With the duo's respective track records, you'd expect Someday World to be a bit of a cracker. Somewhat surprisingly, it's not quite as stunning as you might expect but there are enough brilliant moments to warrant further investigation. Check, for example, the slowly building sci-fi jazz madness of "When I Built This All", the jaunty, off-kilter beauty of the Different Trains-inspired "Strip It Down" and the textured, shoegaze-tinged "To Us All"; all three are simply superb.

Review: Solar One Music's cofounder Robert Witschakowski and Dopplereffek's Gerald Donald return with another sauced out electro offering that takes you to another dimension. Their trademark sounds jump out of the speakers across four glorious sides of vinyl. The slipper baselines, the sci-fi motifs, the feeling of high speed space travel all define these cuts as you guide n bumpy beats or get lost in glistening synths. The duo first worked together a number of year ago but are still finding fresh new forms that make them as essential as ever.

Review: Flesh & The Dream is the pairing of Heather Leigh and Shackleton and between them they take a deep dive into a world of psychic dancehall on Choose Mortality, their debut album together. To say it is experimental is an understatement - they manage to mangle rhythms and distort sound, layer up oozing synths and deranged folk vocalisations into an album of psychedelic suspense and unease. None of these tracks ever sit still, whether it's the trippy church communion of 'Diviner Of The Flesh', hellish underworld electronica of 'Before The Flood' or depraved dub of 'Thirst For Disappearance'. Brilliantly bonkers.

Review: Previously released as two separate CDs, the dream collaborations between ambient composer Harold Budd and the Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie here see a richly deserved double vinyl edition. Complimenting each other perfectly, the haunting piano soundscapes of Budd are given rich texture by Guthrie's ethereal guitar, turning in two albums of sumptuous and beautiful music.

Review: COLDWAVE/SYNTH: Bruce Haack has remained something of a long term fancy for Stones Throw boss Peanut Butter Wolf over the years, with the 2010 reissue of Farad - The Electric Voice complemented by appearances from the prolific Canadian composer in numerous PBW mixes over the years. And now the label presents this sublime set of remixes which cast the likes of Prince Language, James Pants, Vex Ruffin and Peanut Butter Wolf himself in the role of revising material from Haack's acclaimed 1970 LP Electric Lucifer, along with its follow-up Electric Lucifer, Book II and material from various other releases from Haack that surfaced over the years. The Prince Language remix of "Party Machine" and an absolute freak beat monolith version of "Chant Of The Sun" by the Pants man stand out, but the whole thing is dripping in that Stones Throw quality.
