Review: There's a moment in 'Calico' that really encapsulates what's so great about Inventions. A rhythm that has slowly grown into a prominent groove and an instrumental tapestry that develops from ambience to something subtly euphoric and powerful. The track itself, which appears second on this long-awaited follow up to 2015's 'Maze of Woods' album, feels like it's very much alive, a living, breathing thing that only grows more powerful while it absorbs and carries us forward. Put simply, it's a magical and exquisite track that introduces us to a magical and exquisite record. From the playful and innocent keyboard melodies of 'A Time In My Life' and the sorrowful strings of 'Saw You In A Movie', to the epic walls of film score sound that make up 'Spirit Refinement Exploder' and 'Outlook For The Future' with its complex meld of flutes, drums and field recording samples, this really is special stuff.
