Review: The late great Chicago house pioneer Paul Johnson will always be greatly missed. Few producers manage to cook up the sort of rawness that he did so often throughout his career, which indulged legendary EPs for top labels like Dance Mania. Here his In The Kitchen '95 EP gets served up by Chiwax's Classic Edition series. 'Come On Children' is a perfect embodiment of Paul's sound - raw drum funk, slapping hits and sweat-inducing vibes. 'Buzz Buzz' is a head-wrecking acid jam and 'It's House' is pure ghetto funk. There is high-speed sensuousness 'Movin Baby' and hypnotic depths to 'I'm A Freak (& Your Girl Is Too).'

Review: Paul Johnson's 'In The Kitchen 95'' reissue brings back one of his most beloved works, originally crafted in 1992 and reimagined in 1995. This red vinyl 12" captures the energy of Chicago house in its purest form. The first side kicks off with 'Come On Children (Remix)', a high-energy funk-driven house track that gets the feet moving. 'Buzz Buzz (Remix)' follows with its warehouse-style house beats, perfectly capturing the raw, underground vibe of the era. Review: Label boss Ben Jones steps up to curate the third outing on Before. It finds him working with Benjamin Joseph on opener 'Soothe', a stripped-back and warm house roller with crisp hits. Robert James then remixes with a more broken vibe and old-school baselines. On the flip, James then steps up with 'Dmode' with its a punchy cut with drilling bass and tripped-out effects. Ben Jones & Benjamin Joseph then return the remix favour with their own take on 'Dmode'. It's darker and more heads down, with silky synths and plenty of late-night intrigue keeping you locked.

Review: Defected needs no introduction, simply a reiteration that its no secret its one of the most influential house labels around today. Jamie Jones made a huge splash at Ibiza's 2022 season with this track, receiving support across the board from underground tastemakers to daytime radio. Bolstered by the remixes of Brazilian icon Vintage Culture and the alchemist himself, longtime Ibiza master Damian Lazarus on this rolling feel-good house groove. It's easy to see the mass appeal of such a sunny track.

He has dropped several fantastic albums before now that go from hip-hop to jazz-funk but here he taps into the magic of Chicago house greats like Fingers Inc and Larry Heard. 'Night Walk' is pure mid-tempo deep house perfection, 'Precious' layers in some tender vocals and a melodic bassline and 'Strive To Survive' brings more manic acid lines. Review: Breezy, easy vibes smoulder through every inch of this brand new 12 from label regulars Jonno & Tommo. Over the past ten years the pair have worked their magic through all strands of the house spectrum on labels such as Trelik, Finale Sessions, Verdant as well as Ornate, but on here, chief cut Biosflash places them squarely back in the domain of laidback, deep house. This is a perfect summer roller, and can't fail to put a smile on your face, as you roll your windows down. Stratocaster keeps the sunshine vibe high, yet mines a little deeper, channelling the sounds of classic late-90s deep house labels such as as Seasons, Straight Up and Rotax.

Review: For a couple of years a decade or so ago Visionquest was a DJ collective and label that ruled the world. In the time since it has sunk back to the shadows, regrouped and come back as another vital force in the underground. This EP brings together a wealth of real talents not least the one and only synth wizard Mathew Jonson who opens up with the artful sounds of 'These Tears.' Cesar Merveille's 'Decennium' then gets wonky with tightly coiled minimal drums overlaid with pensive chords. On the flipside 'Wonder Wheel' gets a little more eerie and trippy with hunting keys leading you down a late-night maze and 'Dirty Pathways' from Vinyl Speed Adjust layering up the deft synths and airy rhythms.

Review: The all-new Akka & BeepBeep label from the US has dropped its two first EPs simultaneously and Joradesilver features on both. The other is a collaboration with Eddie Logix and this is a solo outing, Social Moment. It is a four-track electro exploration that kicks off with 'Who Want Me', a spacious funk workout with smeared synths and driving bass. The title track brings hints of Detroit to the arrangement and 'Mad Dog Mood' brings lashings of acid and techno to a pulsating low end while closer 'Find Another' rocks back and forth on feathery drums with fizzing melodica leads.

Review: The party people behind the Sheik N Beik crew kick on with another fine techno exploration here courtesy of The Josh Craig. This is our first brush with this artist but a fine one it is too with classic techno melded with new school ideas to great effect. 'Quantum Infiltration' opens up with thumping kicks and busy synth lines burrowing deep into your brain then 'Ultra Rogue Mission' has a darker and harder vibe with moody pads and ice col hi-hats. There is a sublime deepness to the dubby 'Millenniaapi' and '2099' is like the soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic disaster movie. 'Me Liga' is a mutant techno percolator for the heads.

Review: Nu Groove is of course one of the foundational labels when it comes to house music. From the late 80s and through the 90s, the New York imprint put out some of the genre's most definitive deeper sounds. Carrying the torch for that sort of quality today is Jovonn who never fails to cook up classy grooves. Here we're treated to 'The Piano Fix' which plays with a lead piano line throughout and layers up subtle acid over the simple but effective drums. Review: This record is named after Vedanta, an ancient philosophy based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. The music, originally composed and produced by Joseph S Joyce and later remixed by Sebastian Mullaert of Minilogue, was greatly inspired, after reading commentaries from Swami Rama Tirtha's biography "The Scientist & Mahatma" - Chapter 1 - Vedanta and The Secret of Success. Now, some nine years later, it gets served up as a remix EP. There's a dark El Choop Reconstruct, a gorgeous ambient version from Sebastian Mullaert, a minimal headscape from Van Bonn, Federson SF goes warm and dubby and then a crisp, tech-edged vibe from Paul 90 ends the EP in style.

Review: If a new talent from Detroit pops up on the radar, there's an instant magnetism due to the clout the city carries in terms of machine music. JR Disc doesn't disappoint one bit, capturing the raw energy of the city's house and techno legacy in a sincere and original way. The sort of grit you hear caked on the drums on 'Special (Instramental)' can't be faked, likewise the hard-edged soul pinging out of the metallic chords that course through 'Thrust'. This is serious gear for those who like their Motor City workouts over any other kind of house or techno, keeping the vibe tough and funky at all times.

Review: After a headturning debut release which soon sold out back in May, Detroit Basics is back with more magnificent machine music. And once again it is JR Disc who is serving up the sounds. 'Beautiful Blue Pillow' kicks off and sounds like Kraftwerk making funk electro complete with vocoder vocals and silky grooves. 'Mean Mugg' is a more rough and ready deep house sounds with frazzled synths growing ever more prominent and last of all, 'Under The Ground' shuts down with some stomping drums and glistening melodic pixels that rain down the face for a futuristic feel.

Review: JS is an alias of James Zeiter and is also the name of his own label. This seventh transmission once again showcases his signature take on minimal, dub and techno. 'JS-07' rolls out with deep, pillow drums and well buried sub bass that slowly sweeps you up and locks you into a state of hypnosis. 'JS-07R' on the flip side is run through with slightly more warmth and light, like beams of sun piercing the surface of an ocean and catching microscopic organisms floating on the sea bed. It's a heady sound full of soul.

Review: Juaan's debut on Kalahari Oyster Cult channels the Argentinian producer's ability to merge gritty, hypnotic house and electro with an unmistakable dark edge. With these four cuts, he expertly navigates a sonic landscape where urgency and allure coexist in perfect harmony. 'O Bianco O Negro' opens with a deep, rolling bassline, leading into acidic bursts and sharp percussive hits. It's a track that demands the dancefloor's attention, moody and relentless. Review: Definitive Recordings was a "house" label launched by Plus 8 co-founders John Acquaviva and Richie Hawtin in 1992 as a kind of softer flipside to their main label's hard and abrasive sound. There's some genuine gems sitting in the catalogue though, as the imprint's ongoing 'classics' series of reissues proves. This one, from one-shot artist Meredith Ledger as Juicy Fruit, was initially released in 1993. In its original form, 'Liferaft' is a wide-eyed and dreamy slab of early morning deep house perfection that sits somewhere between UK deep house of the period and NJ garage-house. On the flip we get remastered versions of the two original remixes: Acquaviva's 'LFO'-goes-house interpretation (an absolute stunner) and an organ-rich garage-house style dub from Stickman.

Review: It might be November but June is Jazzin with this new EP to close out another faultless year for Kai Alce's NDATL. The South African producer starts off with 'Funky Monkey' which is a deep and sumptuous house groove embellished with subtle but real melodies from Oliver Portal. 'Gogo's Stove Smoke' rolls just as deep, with balmy pads drenching the groove in soul and on the B-Side 'Valerie' layers up shuffling beats and heady pad work with a fantastic bassline. It's meditative stuff for cosy basements then 'Harming Man' brings a little more bounce as it closes the EP with sweet synth stabs, steamy vocal coos and warm rolls from the Rhodes.

Review: Cultured minimalist Junes is back with more future takes on tech, acid, house and breaks. This time once again it is the artist's own Dote label that serves up these four cuts - only the label's 5th EP in some four years. 'Sapphire Tomb' pulls off that fine Junes trick of being both dreamy and deep yet dynamic. It's got smooth chords and tight drum programming that takes you to the stars where you then get worked over by the acid undulations and glistening tech of 'Head-Free Dose'. 'Heritage AD' veers towards supple, mind-melting Jeff Mills-style deep techno and 'Rounded' then ends on a prickly acid jacker. Versatile and vital.

Review: Nu Groove proudly share 'Anybody Out There/20 Paces From The Moon', a sexy four-track package celebrating the work of Marshall Jefferson as Jungle Wonz, and featuring two fresh mixes from the esteemed Mike Dunn and Steve Mac. Jefferson's output under his own name is often sharper and sparser than this otherwise deeper and more truer-to-desire moniker known as Jungle Wonz. Opening with the searching opine for help and salvation, 'Anybody Out There' - "is there anybody out there who really gives a care?", goes the lead vox - we hear a fundamental question firmly footed against a groundwork of bobbly acid and offbeat rimshots, provided on the rerub of Jefferson by Dunn. Dunn also delivers a string-laden dub version of this A1; then Steve Mac offers a set of esoterically extra ests with '20 Paces From The Moon' and another space-loungey version of this latter track for balanced measure.

Review: Back in 2004, when his muscular brand of peak-time house music was all the rage, Vito Lucente AKA Junior Jack secured a sizable club hit with 'Stupidisco', a squelchy and driving fusion of weighty tribal house beats, swirling electronics and giddy disco vocal samples. Here the track returns in remixed form for 2022. David Penn kicks things off with a thrillingly uplifting piano house update, before Deeperlove opt for energetic drums, sweaty fills, echoing vocal snippets and a suitably gargantuan bassline Over on the flip, Jolyon Petch joins the dots between rubbery nu-disco and turn of the '80s electro-disco, while the Electrik Disco mix is a funky, revivalist disco-boogie treat laden with rubbery bass guitar, sparkling synths and Chic-style guitar licks.

Review: 24 Carrot is the collaboration of two notable Dutch producers from Nijmengen: Daniel Leseman and Hans Peeman, both co-founders of deep house label Outplay. Leseman looks after the A side here on 24C02, with the sleazy, loungey and low slung groove of "Winner Winner" and we think you know what's coming next. Indeed "Chicken Dinner" proves humor is at the heart of what he does. Where he goes for that dusty, looped up and sampled-based aesthetic in the new Dutch tradition of Dam Swindle and Nachtbreaker et al. On the flip, Peeman dons the Junktion alias for the infectious funk attack of "Mustard", followed by some slo-mo mood music for night people on "Smokes".

Review: Marquis Hawkes is back in Juxta Position mode. After two killer releases on DVS1's Mistress imprint, he now appears on Rhythm Nation (following up great releases by Tallmen 785 and Kessel Vale) with more fierce and energetic hardware house jams dripping with soul and emotion. "Soon" on the A side is a raw and jacking effort, with dramatic strings and sampled vocals harmonies powered by thunderous tom workouts. On the flip is "Neubau Signal" a darker and deeper excursion with sombre but sexy piano pads, delayed claps and those rich strings making for another awesome appearance.

Review: Toolroom's 'sampler' series, which rounds up previously digital-only releases and sticks them out on action-packed 12" EPs, reaches its sixteenth instalment. Given the format, you'll be unsurprised to discover that there's plenty of bona-fide peak-time heat on show, starting with Mark Knight and James Hurr's excitable, filter-heavy, string-laden disco-house bomb 'You Take Me Higher'. Friend Within offers a scintillating blend of heavy acid bass, glassy-eyed female vocal samples, weighty beats and subtle disco samples on the superb 'Chain', while Martin Ikin and Winnie Ama opt for even heavier drums, warped bass, creepy electronics and dead-eyed spoken word vocals on the sweat-soaked 'Control It'. Review: Toolroom Records are partly responsible for the recent upsurge in jackin' deep house in the early 2020's; this sampler record, the second in their compilations EP series, serves as yet another tour of their grand new deep house estate. Delusions of grandeur are expressed on 'You Are A God' - which, for a track so deitylike, measures itself with rather a lot of restraint - while 'Talking To Myself' contains a vocal sample that is so mouthy and infectious that we really are beginning to believe ourselves to have been possessed by Metatron. Review: Cologne's Hoove label makes a welcome return here with more fresh and contemporary house offerings from a range of interesting names. The always reliable Kolter is up first with 'U Make Me Feel' - a nice and inviting, well swung and mid tempo tech cut with some astral pads. J. Feierabend & Rami's 'OK, Captain!' is just as smooth a cruise through space and Thalo Santana then offers something a little different with a more drum led sound - 'Duradura' has pristine kicks and snares with incidental melodies unfurling up high. D&J's lovely 90s throwback deep house sound 'So We Danced' might be the best of the lot.
