Review: Jamaican reggae and dancehall star Sean Paul did a lot to popularise the genre in the UK and US way before the current wave of artists who dominate. Dusty Rock is his seance album from back in November 2022 and it spawned plenty of chart-climbing singles that helped it, and Paul, go on to become a worldwide phenomenon. Of course, the standout single that still gets plenty of hammer is 'Gimme The Light' while 'Like Glue,' 'I'm Still In Love With You' and 'Get Busy' are all bangers, too, on a record full of big hooks, fresh rhythms and big energy.
Review: Part of Rhino's Now Playing Series, this glitter ball clear vinyl LP is a dazzling showcase of Sister Sledge's enduring appeal. Comprised of ten original recordings, this collection captures the essence of disco with seductive grooves and big-city glamour, transforming any living room into a vibrant dance floor. Formed by four sisters from Philadelphia—Debbie, Joni, Kathy, and Kim—Sister Sledge signed with Atlantic in 1974 while still in school. Their big break came in 1979 when they teamed up with Chic's Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, resulting in a match made in disco heaven. This compilation features their signature hit 'We Are Family,' alongside timeless classics like 'He's the Greatest Dancer' and 'Lost in Music.' Disco fans are celebrating Sister Sledge's vibrant and soulful sound with this compilation. Whether revisiting these classics or discovering them for the first time, this LP is a timeless celebration of one of disco's most beloved groups.
Review: As the title suggests, this excellent collection gathers together tracks from three live sessions the Sisters of Mercy recorded at the BBC's Maida Vale studios between 1982 and '84, during the formative years of their lengthy career. The first session, recorded for John Peel in August 1982, contains a quartet of early live favourites, including their popular cover of the Stooges' '1969', while the second - a session for David 'Kid' Jenson' - boasts versions of tracks from the classic goth-rock EP The Reptile House (as well as a surprise Dolly Parton cover). Best of all though are the tracks from their 1984b Peel Session, which were laid to tape around the same time as the Leeds outfit was recording its debut album.
Review: This adaptation of The Wizard of Oz features standout tracks like 'Ease on Down the Road' and 'Home' which blend r&b, funk and pop to create a fresh and dynamic sound for the legendary movie. The album's innovative approach redefined musical theatre while also setting a new standard for African-American productions. Its energetic compositions and modernised storytelling resonated with audiences which in turn gave rise to a landmark film adaptation. The production remains a significant milestone in musical history and what better way to relive it than with this vinyl version.
Nightmares On Wax - "Rose Rouge" (ReRub mix) (7:18)
Traumer - "What You Think About" (Re-Jammed remix) (6:44)
DJ Deep - "Sure Thing" (DJ Deep remix) (6:23)
Review: One of the greatest house albums of all time is 20 this year. To mark the occasion the legendary French producer behind it - Ludovic Navarre aka St Germain - has selected a sympathetic team of expert remixes to add their own spin to the still classic source material. Atjazz is the perfect man to open up thanks to his deep, lounge and of course jazzy house style. Osunlade then brings his shamanistic sounds to 'Sure Thing' and it glows as a result with Ron Trent later tackling the anthemic 'Rose Rouge' and slowing it down to a lush jazz dance. With DJ Deep, Nightmares On Wax and more also featuring, this is a must cop.
(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right (5:23)
You Got A Nerve (4:51)
I Was Only Joking (6:12)
Review: Rod Stewart's Foot Loose & Fancy Free, released in 1977, stands out as a definitive moment in his career. Opening with the energetic 'Hot Legs,' the album immediately hooks listeners with its rock 'n' roll vigour. The track 'You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)' showcases Stewart's knack for heartfelt ballads, blending tender lyrics with a captivating melody. 'I Was Only Joking' features storytelling at its best, with a blend of acoustic charm and electric intensity. The album also includes a soulful rendition of 'You Keep Me Hangin' On' and a passionate cover of Luther Ingram's '(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want To Be Right.' The band, featuring guitarists Jim Cregan and Gary Grainger, bassist Phil Chen, and drummer Carmine Appice, delivers a cohesive and dynamic sound throughout. Foot Loose & Fancy Free is a must-listen for any rock enthusiast, reaffirming Stewart's place in rock history with its blend of rockers and ballads, all beautifully produced by Tom Dowd. This reissued vinyl is a perfect addition to any collection.
