Review: When they brought back Tom Cruise's macho fighter pilot for Top Gun: Maverick, they were making no bones about the nostalgia trip. The original remains an endearingly ludicrous slice of 80s action with all the brawn necessary to make it an enduring hit, and the soundtrack more than matches up to that, going nine times platinum, no less. That's a lot of success to match up to, so Maverick pulls out the big guns by tapping up Lady Gaga for the hit-making and Hans Zimmer for the epic Hollywood score. It's tonnes of fun, and it even features Kenny Loggins' classic 'Danger Zone' from the original.

This concert was filmed on May 7, 2016 in Prague during Hans Zimmer's hugely successful European concert tour. Zimmer was accompanied by a band, orchestra and choir, 72 musicians in total, including guitarist Johnny Marr (of The Smiths). The staging was spectacular with a ground-breaking light show, stunning visuals, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Hans Zimmer performs on multiple instruments and gives introductory insights to many of the pieces during the concert.

With a multi-award winning career reaching back to the mid-eighties, Zimmer (whose film scores have also earned 2 Golden Globes, 4 Grammys, 4 Satellite Awards, 3 Saturn Awards and 3 Classical Brit Awards along with many more nominations), has developed close working relationships with renowned directors such as Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Michael Bay, Ron Howard, Gore Verbinski and Christopher Nolan. His credits include some of the biggest blockbuster movies of all time along with acclaimed TV series such as The Crown and Planet Earth II.

Review: Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk reimagines the war film as a tense, near-wordless "single-take" experience. Set during the 1940 evacuation from the beaches of Dunkirk, the film captures the claustrophobic chaos faced by Allied forces encircled by German troops. German composer Hans Zimmer's score centrally shapes the film's pressure-cooker atmosphere, as a ticking motif sampled from Nolan's own pocket watch circumvolves a Shepard tone, never ceasing to up the audiovisual tension. He is behind plenty of the biggest Hollywood hits from Dune to Gladiator and now he releases part two of his acclaimed 2019 album. It blends the grandeur of symphonic music with the intensity of cinematic composition across 17 reimaginings of his most iconic soundtracks into epic orchestral suites. Highlights include a stirring cello-led 'Final Ascent' from No Time to Die, a serene 'A Time of Quiet Between the Storms' from Dune II, and a lush romantic suite from The Prince of Egypt and much more all performed by the Odessa Orchestra & Friends and the Nairobi Chamber Choir.

But while Zimmer is often associated with big budget, big screen spectaculars, he's also scored a slew of more intimate films. Showcasing a more human side to his oeuvre, the five original tracks here are beautiful, sweet, tender, and truly moving. Meanwhile, the addition of Eartha Kitt's seminal Christmas anthem, 'Santa Baby', and Louis Armstrong's timeless 'Kiss of Fire', elevate the package.

Review: For many people, the wait for the latest Bond movie to finally be released after long Covid delays has been excruciating. But for a certain group of us, the soundtrack will always be more anticipated, especially when it is by a modern great like Hans Zimmer. On this one, the masterful composer captures all the glamour, danger, high drama, class and suspense you would expect, but all in his own unique way. Johnny Marr, who is also the featured guitarist on the album, helps with the score and of course Billie Eilish's electrifying title track 'No Time To Die' also makes the cut.

Hans Zimmer has composed for more than 150 films, James Newton Howard in excess of 100. This compilation of their shared caped crusader efforts proves why they're so well respected.
