Autre & Xinner - "Nebula" (7:00)
Autre - "Seiryu" (7:02)
Kryptic Universe - "01309 Stairways" (9:04)
Owen Jay & Brian James - "Chordless" (5:25)
Review: Given the success of the first two installments of the Editions series, it's little surprise to see XDB put together a third volume for his Metrolux imprint. He's assembled another crack team of international contributors, too. Autre and Xinner join forces on opener "Nebula", a fine combination of low-slung techno drums, restless electronics and deep space sonics. Autre goes solo to deliver the fluttering, late night hypnotism of "Seiryu", before Kryptic Universe steals the show with "01309 Stairways", a superb chunk of rolling intelligent techno that features an extended ambient intro. Owen Jay and Brian James round things off with the distorted drum machine hits and woozy riffs of "Chordless" (which, to be fair, is an accurate title).

Acid Wash Conflict - 7th City Classics Volume 1
Review: "Acid Was Conflict - 7th City Classics Volume 1" is an absolutely essential techno release. This is the first record in a series of three limited edition re-issues, with selected tracks from the legendary 7th City Detroit catalogue. This monumental re-release features the amazing "Acid Wash Conflict" by the master Claude Young under his Brother From Another Planet alias. This has long stood as a blueprint for minimal music of today, played regularly by the likes of Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos and Dan bell etc.

Foreign Exchange (Tony Rohr remix)
Review: Xpansul and Alexi Delano, the hottest duo of techno, have made some space on their tight schedule full with remixes, releases and gigs to appear for the first time together on Discos De Lata. They bring two tracks that are a perfect example of the sound that has put them on the top places of charts and dancefloors all over the world. "Foreign Exchange" has all the elements of that good old techno we all love: powerful bass, a steady, playful groove, deep and mysterious bassline, elegant and distinctive sounds with that hypnotic touch, and well executed arrangements. A delightful track to play, dance and listen to altogether.

Intelligence Reframed EP

Echolocation
Cosmic Antipathy
Vegetotherapy
Meta-Intellectual
Review: Alexi Delano and Santi "Xpansul" Ferrer met during 2004 in Madrid, Spain and have been recording together since. 2006 marks a strong release year for the duo with their debut on Plus 8 as well as a single on Adam Beyer's True Soul label. Both together and separately their recording and performing careers have each taken shape over the last 10 plus years. "Intelligence Reframed" rattles and rolls in true Plus 8 dancefloor spirit, shifting in precise yet animated techno. The A-side lead off track "Echolocation" sends a driving but relaxed beat into a sinister zone of space. "Cosmic Antipathy" grooves along with its electro stabs, square - wave bubbles and cosmic tones that squelch and electrocute. First off the edge of the B - side is "Vegetotherapy", a deeper approach to their sound with a slightly industrialized attitude. "Meta - Intellectual" takes the record out on a surgical bang, tossing up layers of shadow melodies and manic loops of metallic percussion.
Alexi originally hails from Stockholm (Sweden) where he grew into DJing and producing alongside friends Cari Lekebusch and Jesper Dahlback during the early 1990's. From living in cities like Barcelona and now New York, his musical & DJ perspective is global and his sounds continue to expand. Santiago Ferrer runs three labels, Discos De Lata, MSX and Sindicato Records, based out of Madrid. He is one of Spain's most respected electronic music artists and has new releases coming out on Apnea and his own Discos De Lata label.

Deepside - "III"
Santonio - "Amnesia"
Xperiment - "Keru Evil #10"
AES - "In My Head"
Review: Tresor again opens its vault, this time skipping the '90s inspired techno for four old school house cuts from Deepside, Santonio, Xperiment and AES, all of which featured on DJ Deep's excellent Kern mix CD. Deepside opens the first volume of Kern rarities with an acid based drum dance in "III", whereas Santonio plays on looped keys and jumbled strings in "Amnesia". Xperiment hits up a plodding bass line alongside a Beverly Hills Cop sounding melody and jacking drums, and AES brings the only vocals to the EP with a classic cut of Chicago house.

Review: Appian Sounds' Indelible Expressions series returns with its second and final chapter, this time spear-headed by a totally different collection of artists. The Irish label have featured plenty of exciting talent in the past, including Joey Anderson, Imugem Orihasam, Eduardo De La Calle, so we know that they can throw together an excellent variety of artists to form one hell of an EP. This time we have: Evigt Morker with the supremely dubby and laid-back "Langbro Kyrka", "Once Upon A Time In A Dub" by G-Prod, "ison" by Vidab and Curle members Hiver, and a cracking piece of percussive grit-house by the one and only XDB, always up for it and never shy of a fat groove.

Review: Perhaps contemporary techno's most promising collaboration unites for a second time, with Stroboscopic Artefacts boss Lucy and his Singaporean kindred spirit Xhin teaming up for this 12" on Chris Liebing's ever nurturing CLR imprint. "LX2" and "LX3" offer fascinating insights into how these two operate, showcasing their rare ability to imbue stripped back, pummelling concrete techno with a deeply cerebral atmosphere. "LX2" contains a Ruskin-esque granite kick augmented by relentless hats and muggy atmospherics; flip over for "LX3" which impresses even more, with Lucy and Xhin coming up with a steely techno throb full of twisted metallics and scorched synths. Epic.

The Spiral Of Babel (5:07)
Review: After a string of EPs on labels like Important Records and PAN, it was inevitable Japan's Kouhei Matsunaga and Toshio Munehiro would end up on the Powell's Diagonal imprint - now a nest of the coldest in experimental, industrio-techno. There's a bit of everything on here, from the broken, percolating percussion of "218"; the gorgeous bassline supporting "845", and the freaky pseudo-acid of "Whispering Gallery". To finish things off, both literally and not, "234" is a noisy, shattered and uber distorted cut, whereas "The Spiral Of Babel" is a rolling, fast-paced drum shuffle fitting of any sci-fi flick. An excellent EP and a fine addition to the Diagonal dynasty.

Review: Sweet Harmony is back with a compilation bursting with colourful shapes, textures and fresh techno rhythms. Anatole Serre's 'Hyperdulia' is a fast-paced fusion of drums, breakbeats and subtle allure that is followed by Xiaolin's 'Breath of Water,' a more ethereal yet still-driving percussive trip. Review: Riviera's early momentum continues here with a punchy four-tracker from six on-point artists. Lewis Taylor kicks off with 'Non Stop' which is a straight up and funky peak time then pumper with bright chords and plenty of fun in the atmosphere, Cult keeps the energy high with 'Total Kill' and X Coast & DJ RaDa then offer the acid-laced and turbocharged bass stomps of 'Come Together.' LIL NASSTY then flips the script with some sleazy trap beats with menacing bars and futuristic synth patterns on 'Get It Up So' and DJ Pacifier shuts down with some high-speed ghetto-tech in the form of the relentless 'Fried Again.'

Review: X-Ray and Erotek bring one of the best Electro releases on Metroplex! The a-side belongs to the infamous Bellville Three (Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson) who bring us the almighty "Lock It Down" - one of only two tracks the trio released under their X-Ray guise. It's a wicked Hi Tech Funk style track with otherworldly vocoders and that unmistakable Model 500 funk we love so much. On the flip, Direct Beat's Erotek (aka Dre) make a rare appearance with "I Shal Tek Thee" - a dark and brooding Detroit Electro piece that's more than worthy of an inclusion on this shamefully overlooked piece of wax.

Bugger - "No Silence Now"
Umbra - "The Big Dumb"
Review: MELMAK's new 12" is entitled All Stars: The Rave Years which gives you an idea of what to expect. These are high-tempo, dense and rave ready sounds from the drum & bass vanguard. There is plenty of space out cosmic energy to the exploratory leads of X Termal's 'Tragnal Kozze' then 'What If' (The Doulo Klan edit) is a tightly coiled stepper. Bugger lays down a hyper speed rhythm with drilling bass and slapping hits on 'No Silence Now' and Umbra's 'The Big Dumb' is a real slow-motion churner with textural synths and alien sound designs. Review: Proper old-school techno acid house banger on the mighty Relief records. This is a real rugged, banging EP of throwback 303s, pounding drum machines, and mental dancefloor dynamics. "Time Elevation Rhythm" is a heavy dose of sleazy acid and droning synths over some 808 drums - love those handclaps - while "Zeta 1" builds up with some Art of Noise-ish robo-vocal samples. "Kontrol Your Mind" wiggles into your brain with its old-school drums and cut-up vocal samples for a real dark banger.

Review: Pacific House pioneers Legowelt and Xosar surface for air as Xamiga for a second time, appearing on the M Division with the dinky blue vinyl Oceania 10". Mr Wolfers is no stranger to the Melbourne imprint, having graced M Division on several occasions under his Nacho Patrol banner, and it's great to see him and XOSAR offered the chance to expand on last year's debut Xamiga release on Rush Hour. As you'd expect from the nautical stylings, there's a healthy amount of Drexciyan influence at display across the three tracks, mixed up with spectral, self styled 'Ghost Haus' that XOSAR has been developing across her solo releases. "Atlantis Force Code" is a considered highlight, sounding like Daphne Oram trying her hand at jacking house.

ACR owns the A1 with a remix to the EP's title track, with the German seemingly plucking out his favourite loop-section of the original and pumping it full of a solid sounding techno low-end like only the Germans know how. XDB's version is long-winding, groovy and noticeably lighter in comparison, while on the B-side Detroit techno and Chicago house influences are abound, most notably in "Tonik", while "Liberty" is a stomping and very funky house classic

Review: Aside from dealing with distribution matters, Germany's Diamonds and Pearls also puts out killer house and techno music on its own self-titled imprint. The past has seen releases by the likes of Dettmann, Efdemin, and Kassem Mosse, among others, and this time they've brought together house deviant XDB and the younger Even Drones onto one slab of wax. XDB drops some of his familiar blend of minimal funk on "Mitos", which is expertly rewired by Even Drones into a sparser, more broken cut. The flipside contains another original from XDB, "Enpii", which is moodier and more molecular than its predecessor; and once again, ED features on rewiring duties, moulding the original into a deep-space belter with a driving groove and one hell of a hook.

Review: The label arm of Berlin distro emporium Diamonds & Pearls well and truly flex their A&R muscle here with a killer second release of 2012 that pairs the monumentally gifted talents of XDB and Kassem Mosse with suitably worthy results. Deep Space boss XDB helms the A Side himself with a wonderfully rough hewn analogue house transmission "Ekatem" that feels like it slip into infinity without losing any sheen. If a combination of rattling percussion, discombobulating synths and rusty sounding square basslines appeals to you then you will find much joy with "Ekatem". Listen to "Omrish" blindfolded and you'd guess Mosse was involved given the gritty, smudged out nature of its execution, a wonderfully hazy melange of chiming melodic tones and off the grid percussive touches that appears to float in stasis and proves all too intoxicating on the senses.

It was under this project that the duo first surfaced as back in 2007, inaugurating the Restoration label and having since appeared in various forms with the likes of Steffi and Blawan in the ensuing years, Lucretio and Marieu have deemed the climate right to revisit Xenogears. Review: Fledgling UK techno imprint Tabernacle heads to Berlin for their third release, inviting Xenogears aka The Analogue Cops to drop four tracks of raw, sometimes harsh, sometimes odd but always unadulterated machine funk. There's a lazy swagger to the opening of "crc04" that grabs you as soon as the heavy lines of synths drop over the stuttering drum machine crunch. It's the mid section crescendo of piercing sonics and crashing layers of percussion that add that extra layer of overwhelming sensory menace. In contrast, "Mino" ditches the menace for a smoother retro Detroit electro flex reminiscent of vintage Model 500, right up to the upwards sci fi synth freakery. The B Side opens with the sonic booms of "Livex15" throwing out elastic synth swirls over a big rusted beat, as industrial pressure grows beneath with ominous intent. In a word, magnificent! This excellent and rather limited release - only 200 copies pressed up - finishes on pulsing and quirky form with the subaqueous techno funk thrust of "Dreamsequence."

Elder scholars of the SUED way will know that one does not dither when it comes to a new record on the label but interested newcomers will still find this two track 12" a perfect introduction into the label's understated ways. The man-machine's first missive, "Dream Resonator", is rather delightful, and sees him warp chiming, crystalline synthesizer melodies and glassy-eyed IDM style chords around an inventive and entertaining rhythm track that sits somewhere between Drexciya style electro and jazz-fired broken beat. Live To Leave
The Duty & The Feast
Review: "Live To Leave" is an energetic, straight forward stomping techno, based on a simple effective rhythm and a twisted analogue bass line with some acidic resonance. Digital stabs and a spooky lead progress next to them to build this dance floor killer. Peak time. "The Duty & The Feast" goes for deeper, darker minimal ways, with a groove based on shuffled beats and voice hits that add some funk flavour. A drilling analogue buzz glued to a metal like lead make this track a hard to define one. Party, party, party!

Wind Mill
Lower Case
Nice To Meet You
Steaking
Review: This third release keeps the eclectic, versatile spirit that has become the label's main feature. Xpansul & Daweed work within a lot of different shades of techno creating a record suitable for a huge range of DJs. "Wind Mill" travels through rubbery atmospheres over a drilling bassline, both together resulting in a hypnotic groove that causes an immediate dance reaction. "Lower Case" is a more relaxed vision of minimal sound, in which the alliance of rhythm and atmosphere creates a sense of uneasiness that induces unpredictable behaviors. B side goes "Party party party". "Nice To Meet You" is a track made to break down the walls. A personal vision of the Chicago sound, a bit naïve and ironic, built over an unsettling bassline and a platoon of "going mad" metal sounds. "Streaking" is an uplifting epic song, a lovely vision of trance in which Xpansul and Daweed show us how to use melodic layers as a vehicle for feelings and emotions.

Movies For The Blind

XVII - "Movies For The Blind"
Delta X - "Broken Mirrors"
Moerbeck - "Behind The Mask"
Eomac - "The Third Eye"
Review: Since Moerbeck launched his Code Is Law label with his own Teens On Fire 12, the Vault Series producer has seemingly chosen the eschew the narrative of full artist releases in favour of the various artist route for subsequent releases. This second sampler sees the introduction of two new artists: XVII and Delta X. The former's "Movies For The Blind" tugs at the heart strings in the same way a Sonic Youth ballad might, while the latter does away with any sentimentality and lays down something peak time in "Broken Mirrors". Moerbeck provides "Behind The Mask" which sounds like something that could soundtrack an insect documentary and Eomac sees returns to the label with the EPs highlight "The Third Eye".

Review: The Poverty Is Violence stable are firmly established now as an essential conductor for rabid, rowdy and downright rasping mechanics from subterranean operators of all shapes and sizes. Anonymous but reportedly veteran Dutch producer XXX previously appeared on the label in 2016 with the wild Noorder Scannen 12", and now returns with a bludgeoning new release. There's a consistent metal grind to the percussion on Westzaan Doelen, while the synth tones in between tend towards the jagged and abrasive, there's space and poise in the arrangement to lift this out of knuckleheaded noise. "Don't Go After Her" reverberates with clamouring intensity while the beefy chassis of "Just The Two Of You" shimmers under an acidic glaze - this is full-tilt deviant music executed with finesse to match the grime.

Anthony Fade - "Boogie Mania" (5:34)
Soundbwoy Killah - "Fuck Off & Dance" (6:41)
Interplanetary Criminal - "2001" (5:50)
Review: Following up some great releases by Keita Sano and young guns Swales & Tech Support, Manchester's Dansu Discs are back with Club Culture Vol.1: a four track various artist compilation infused with dancefloor ready cuts across the spectrum. XXXY gets down with some cheeky disco edit action on "ILTD", and Anthony Fade getting into some old school techno (of the early '90s kind) on the fierce "Boogie Mania" on the A side. On the flip, we get down to the sounds of early UK rave (hoovers, breaks and all!) on the euphoric "Fuck Off & Dance" by Soundbwoy Killah (calling to mind the early sounds Shut Up & Dance, naturally) and Interplanetary Criminal's "2001" which will have you getting your tunnel visioned wiggle on in no time - with this tripped-out acid house journey.

Review: Say the words 'pre-teen pop' to most people and they'll make for the hills faster than you can say "be afraid, be very afraid". In the case of X-Cetera, though, the presumption of garbage is inaccurate, albeit the underlying feeling of something being off i perhaps even unsettling i remains. Self-recorded in a very different time and a very different world, on the cusp of a new millennium and all its promises (lol), Jessica Hall, Ayden Mayeri, and sisters Janet and Mary Washburn give a wonderful example of how talented kids can be on Summer 2000. It's also a strange and weirdly i accidentally i trippy ride from beginning to end. Marrying elements of trip hop, r&b, indie, sugarcane pop and acoustic, the sickly sweet and naturally childish lyrics and delivery leave a macabre air lingering. Like the nursery rhyme in a horror movie, sort of. Once filed under chart hopeful, now avant garde.

Review: Serbian-born, NYC-based DJ and producer X-Coast returns with a new set of high-energy tracks designed for big arenas and main stages. As shown when remixing Shygirl's '4eva 'and DJ Gigola's 'La Batteria', he blends house, techno, electro, drum & bass and trance on labels like Steel City Dance Discs, Higher Ground and Mama Told Ya. X-Coast's signature sound fuses 90s and 00s rave nostalgia with modern production here and results in the tribal-infused 'Neapolis', soaring trance of 'Desert Storm,' and diva house energy of 'Hold Me Baby'. They all make for a dynamic collection which shows off X-Coast's genre-spanning versatility.
