Black Lights (3:17)
Black Lights (Flute version) (3:55)
Review: The elusive Minus Group was a mysterious outfit that was headed up by the multi-instrumentalist Enzo Minuti who is also known as Ezy Minus. They recorded this superbly good psyched-out and dubbed up masterpiece in 1981 and here both sides offer the same tune in different arrangements. There is more of an afro vibe to the opener with great sax and synth phrasings and vocals from a choir that are weirdly processed. On the flip is a more downtempo mix for Carribean and chilled out vies. They are both versatile and sure to liven up any club.

U Got Me Good
U Got Me Good (purple vinyl 7")
Cat: TSRZV 30.
Review: Nu-funk sensation Mishell Ivon and modern funk producer Andrew Napoleon have teamed up to bring you two feel-good funk bombs. Mishell's soaring disco vocals complement perfectly the funk and boogie inspired synths of Andrew's productions. Featuring 80's-funk synth basslines, silky synthesizers and Chic-esque funk guitar, these songs hark back to the classic era of the early 80's with a modern twist. Both tracks are uplifting dancefloor gems that you'll find it impossible not to dance to!

Similar Beat (3:47)
Review: Mushi 45 main man Mister Mushi is as close to an edit god as you can get, frankly He shows that again here on another of his superb 7"s. The a-side from the Japanese DJ and producer is as tight as they come. It adds many new layers to an iconic tune, with big horns, kicking hip hop drum work and a funky bassline that you hope will never end. It's action packed from front to back, and cannot fail to detonate any dance floor. ON the back is a version that is stripped of all the extra flair, but rolls deep and offers jazzy keys, snatched vocal snippets and a languid, slow-funk groove that still has plenty to offer.

Review: The emergent trend of tapes issued by Vancouver label 1080p subsequently being licensed for a vinyl edition continues with Moon B's sublime Lifeworld album picked up for release by Hamburg operation Growing Bag Records. The label has form in this regard, previously granting the A.r.t. Wilson tape Overworld by Andras Fox a hugely popular vinyl edition and they've chosen wisely in securing this gem from the Moon B discography. Wedged somewhere between an album and a mixtape, Lifeworld was a kaleidoscopic journey into the LA-based artist's influences and this LP version is made all the more enticing by the presence of previously unreleased Moon B jammer "Moments in Slank".

Review: A series of Marc Moulin releases are on the way right now courtesy of various reissue projects and this one is pressed up on nice orange vinyl. The Belgian beatmaker is known for downtempo grooves but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside his band, later known as Placebo but here still known as Kiosk. 'Mona Call' is a busy and jazzy cut with dancing drums. 'Waterproof' arrives on the flip carries on in the same vein, with big horns bursting though the arrangement. These are two of the very many crucial tunes in the Moulin catalogue.

Oriental Brothers International Band - "Oku Ngwo Di Ochi" (Uproot Andy remix) (6:18)
Oriental Brothers International Band - "Mu Na Gi Wu Nwanne" (Caribombo remix) (5:06)
Review: The third volume of the AfroColombia Remix series merges African and Colombian sounds with contemporary electronica. It's a collaboration between Colombian labels Galletas Calientes and Palenque Records that celebrates Palenque's 20+ years of activism and Galletas Calientes' two-decade legacy while honouring the late Abelardo Carbono with a remix of his track 'La PiNa Madura' by Voilaaa - it's a standout here with hints of funk, soul and disco all bringing the sunshine. The compilation also reinterprets Nigerian Igbo Highlife and Ekobe music thanks to producers Captain Planet, Uproot Andy and Caribombo. They bring new, funky energy to timeless classics while preserving the original cultural essence.

Creative Source - "I'd Find You Anywhere" (3:17)
Lou Donaldson - "You're Welcome, Stop On By" (4:01)
Review: Japanese crate excavator Muro represents two mid 70s soul gems. Creative Source's band-led 1976 cut "I'd Find You Anywhere" was originally featured on his Diggin Ice mixtape twelve years ago and is available here on 45 for the very first time. Stepping back two years to 74, Donaldson's "You're Welcome, Stop On By" takes us on a much spacier, cosmic jazz route where the vocals and his sax licks combine to instantly sooth. Again, this has never been available on 45 before. Limited, and heavyweight vinyl, too...

The Dramatics - "Ocean Of Thoughts & Dreams" (4:37)
Review: Destination Motown for two Muro-curated classics: Jackson-collaborator Willie Hutch's 1974 horn-fest "Ain't That" still buzzes with soul power thanks to its full band orchestration and gutsy vocals from big Willie himself. The Dramatics play the consummate contrast; a Gibbs-style ballad from 77 all swoony and sweet, play this on a busy night and you'll increase the area's birth rate quite considerably.

I Can't Make You Love Me (feat Nanami Shimizu) (4:40)
Solitude (4:27)
Review: This year has been packed with new music from Japanese jazz-funk revivalists Nautilus. After a series of well-received 7"s and an album, Refrain, back in May, they now return with two more of their superbly well crafted and musical singles. 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is all splashy cymbals and tight jazz drumming, with noodling Rhodes chords and the icing on the cake - a vocal from Nanami Shimizu. Flip it over for 'Solitude' which is a much more sparse and slow jam where there is room between the beats for the starry-eyed chords and keys to real make their mark. This is golden stuff once more from this fine collective.

Space Funk (4:31)
Review: Japanese trio Nautilus, whose name and style was inspired by the great Bob James, can always be relied upon to deliver sublime slabs of evocative jazz-funk. They're at it again on this must-check seven-inch. On the A-side you'll find original composition 'Inner Space', a superbly intergalactic jazz-funk number piled high with loose-limbed jazz breaks, warming chords and synthesizer solos so spacey they may have been recorded on Pluto. Turn to the flip for their interpretation of Manzel's 1977 classic 'Space Funk', which Nautilus turn into a warming, floor-friendly jazz-funk club jam complete with rubbery slap bass, sweaty drums, poignant pianos and futuristic synth solos.

El Amor Es Un Bicho (2:29)
El Diablo (2:43)
Review: The story behind this Henry Nelson record is a remarkable one. The Colombian artist recorded the two Latin soul tracks featured on it after moving to Spain in the late 1960s. As no Spanish labels liked what they heard, he was forced to return to South America and the songs were eventually released on an obscure Argentinian label in 1969. Original copies are a genuine rarity, hence this Madmua reissue. A-side 'Al Emor Es Un Bicho' is wonderfully fiery and fierce, with Nelson and his musical collaborators brilliantly fusing elements of psych-rock, funk, soul and British beat music. Flipside 'El Diablo', a confirmed Latin funk stomper blessed with a sing-along chorus, is equally as righteous.

Review: Dam Funk and Nite Jewel first joined forces way back in 2009 for what most thought was a one-off collaboration. Here, they're reunited once more for their first joint 12" release. Nite-Funk is every bit as special as you'd expect, taking the best of both artists' musical repertoire - Dam Funk's authentic '80s synth-soul, and Nite-Funk's sparkling, deep analogue synth-pop - and turning them into something new and involving. The EP boasts vocal and instrumental versions of four tracks: the Michael Jackson style '80s soul-pop of "Let Me Be Me", the heartfelt, late night radio slow jam "Love X2", the sax-laden, Sade-goes-soulful house flex of "U Can Make Me", and the deliciously dreamy "Don't Play Games".

This latest 7" as part of the Free Soul series comes from Odessey whose 'Battened Ships' has big brass, funky drums and lots of killer guitar lines and rich bass, all topped with heartfelt vocals. It's On (dance mix version) (5:06)
Review: Gustavo C's G.U.S label - short for 'Golden Unreleased Songs' - exists for one purpose: to offer-up limited-edition singles featuring previously unheard gems from the disco and boogie era. The label has already released buried treasure from Central Line and Kenni Rightout and here delves into the archives of obscure 80s electrofunk outfit Odyssey & Co, a band not to be confused with the far better-known Odyssey. 'It's On' was originally recorded and mixed in 1983, but for one reason or another never hit stores. It's a quality slab of soul-fired boogie-funk rich in rubbery bass guitar, spacey synths, eyes-closed vocals and post-electro machine drums. The A-side original mix is on-point, but we prefer the slightly stretched out and more dancefloor focused flip-side 'Dance Mix'.

In Your Lovin' (4:53)
Review: Blissful boogie reissue from Junko Ohashi, whose 7-inch promo for 'Dancin' here functioned as the promo material for the 1983 album 'Point Zero'. Sounding just as rough, farty and raw as its original LP cut, the track is a perfect example of what Japan brought to disco - blending it largely with city pop - at the time. 'In Your Lovin', as it did on the original album, brings up the B-side with a downer-tempo funk beat, and a lyrical subject dealing with a romanticized, ideal lover.

Review: In 1985, Isy Martin Jr. released 'Rug Burns' and it became a low-key disco stepping classic. Now, Prime Time Records and Tapes has secured the rights and presents this official repress featuring that cut on the A-side so you no longer have to play high prices on the second-hand market. As well as that fresh bit of ass-shaking and funky dancefloor fun, the label has pressed a special re-do of 'Rug Burns' featuring XL Middleton and Zackey Force Funk on the B-side. Review: This is another fine addition to the Four Flies 45 series: it is a first-ever 7" taken from one of the few soundtracks that legendary producer and composer Paolo Ormi ever wrote (namely a rather underwhelming parody of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam). He is best known for his mix of Italian funk, disco and library music, both for underground labels but also stars like Raffaella Carra. All three of the instrumentals here are seriously funky - two of them have actually been put out before as part of this label's hard-to-find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Review: There's not much to go on when it comes this latest release on trusted soul and funk outpost Epsilon. Whoever Pals & Gal were, their sound is rooted in the classic era of 70s soul even if the track was completed bang on the turn of the decade in 1980. There's a big band arrangement powering 'Lil' Bit Different' which was put together by Ron Foster, and there's as much focus on holding down the groove as different instruments coming to the fore to do their thing. The lyrics tell it straight - this is just a little bit different.

This is another one that packs a real punch with a couple of hard hitting b-boy breaks packed with original soul and raw funk. 'Nothing But A Heartache' is the a-side with a Northern Soul vocal busting out of the mix, tambourines bring a sixties feel and the whole hitting nerve quits so is sure to get the floor rocking. Peak yacht funk with all the lavish production flourishes of the era, and strong traces of jazz, each cut stimulates: "Melodies Of Love" is all about the falsettos and Balearic charm while "Walking In The Rain" is a sultry sax-blaster with some of the most powerful bass walks Beggars Banquet ever pressed. Sticky Sticky-Sock-A-Poo (3:39)
Review: German funk act The Poets Of Rhythm have more than left their mark on a scene that wasn't so popular back in their heyday. They have got plenty of great albums to explore and several superb singles, of which this is one. 'Practice What You Preach' is a track from their debut album released on Soulciety in 1993. Despite a hiatus from albums until their return with a Ninja Tune LP in 2001, the band remained active in the 7"s circuit. Surprisingly, a part two to the same track exists, serving as an instrumental version of the original 1993 release. On the B-side, a fresh funk track, previously released under the alias Mighty Continentals, features Bo Baral delivering a rare solo guitar performance alongside ambiguous lyrical content.

Presented with care and offering music that genuinely needs a proper release, they've become a trusted source of discovery for devoted diggers. 'Spell Bound' comes from PSK, and is taken from their one and only album Disco Season back in 1980. Be My Girl (2:57)
Lonely Man (2:50)
Review: Antifaz Records have pulled off something of a coup here, unearthing a Mod-era soul gem that must be one of the more obscure reissues of recent times. Very little appears to be known about the record's origin, or that of Tito Ramirez. Both tracks, though, are dancefloor fire. "Be My Girl" sees Ramirez singing in Spanish over a swinging, toe-tapping groove and typical 1960s harmony backing vocals. It's typical of U.S rhythm and blues of the early 1960s, with punchy soul horns emphasizing the smooth but floor-friendly backing track. The slightly more up-tempo "Lonely Man", in which Ramirez switches to English, is much more of a riotous and oddly psychedelic concoction.

Rare Cuts - "Amigo Branco" (4:40)
Monsieur Van Pratt Le Groove - "El Rap Clap O" (Regroove) (4:40)
Bully Boy - "Fear'n'Loathing In Funk Vegas" (4:34)
Ben Jamin - "Old Time Feeling" (4:50)
Review: French funk lovers Acts of Sedition roll out another tasty double 7" here that features some massive joints from around the world. First up is the Latin heat of Rare Cuts's 'Amigo Bracno' with its big, bright leads, string lushness and percolating, percussive groove goodness all finished with a great Portuguese vocal. Monsieur Van Pratt Le Groove's 'El Rap Clap O' (Regroove) hits a little harder but with similar funk playfulness and some great chord work and Bully Boy then offers the raw and strident funk of 'Fear'n'Loathing In Funk Vegas.' Ben Jamin slows it right down with the sun-kissed late night bliss of 'Old Time Feeling.'

La Diferencia (4:05)
Review: La Differencia, Dutch singer Hubertus Richenel Baars' 1982 debut, has long been considered something of a slept-on classic by those in the know. Charmingly lo-fi and homemade in feel, the cassette's 10 tracks - six of which are featured on this first ever vinyl reissue - brilliantly joined the dots between blue-eyed soul, spacey electro, disco, electrofunk and slap-bass wielding space boogie. As usual, Music From Memory has done a terrific job with the re-mastering; the tracks sound stronger than ever, if even they have retained some of the charming fuzziness of Baars' original production. All told, it's another essential reissue from Music Is Memory.

Stardust (2:13)
Review: Funk maestros Rockid Sound Machine returns with yet more of their timeless and seductive instrumental funk sounds. They have turned out tons of it over the years on a steady and always high quality basis. This double A-side kicks off with 'Scorpio' featuring tight drums and wah-wah guitar smudges next to big horns. The track blends funk with soul and merges old-school vibes with modern energy. On the flip side, 'Stardust' ramps things up with prickly drumming and percussion, wet cymbal crashes and more bendy guitar work that brings psyched-out 60s vibes. Another great outing for Rockid Sound Machine's signature bristling beats.

Spirit Of Love (Phil Asher Restless Soul Boogie mix - DJ Kawasaki 45 edit) (5:26)
Spirit Of Love (Mano Ariba remix - Ryuhei The Man 45 edit) (5:00)
Review: The ever on point Japanese label At Home Sound is back with another blistering brace of brilliant edits. DJ Kawasaki steps out first with a special 45 edit version of a Soul Boogie mix by the late great Phil Asher, who himself was reworking the Root Soul original 'Spirit of Love.' It's the sort of lush and feel good disco tune that comes laden with a ton of great synths and guitar riffs as well as the all important vocal. The ever green Ryuhei The Man then turns in a bossa tinged, Latin flecked edit of a Mano Ariba mix of the same tune that is packed with sunshine.

Lonesome Cowboy (4:04)
Review:  It's always a fun game to see when you first hear someone drop Roy Ayers's ubiquitous warm weather classic 'Everybody Love's The Sunshine.' This year has been rather cold in early spring but soon as this one gets dropped you cannot help but feel rays o your face even if they haven't yet appeared. It's a stone cold gem with its lazy drum tumbles and arching synths. The keys even sound like they can't be bothered to really move properly boucle of the heat and the lush vocal is the umbrella in the cocktail, if you will.

Track 1 (4:48)
Track 2 (5:12)
Review: Two popular tracks from the highly rated and MURO-curated compilation Diggin Victor: Deep Into The Vaults Of Japanese Fusion / AOR are now made available for the first time on their own standout 7". Originally released as a limited item at an anniversary event, these rare gems are magically escapist sounds that blend library music, jazz, soul and Balearic mindsets into a pair of tropical heaters. The Kumi Sasak A-side is a real melodic noodler with meandering bass and a whimsical, carefree spirit as it heads nowhere in particular in hypnotic fashion. Side-B has 'Kimono' by Tetsuo Sakurai, which is a more rhythmic sound with funky bass riffs and 80s broken beats and a lush vocal.

Jim Sharp - "Inner City" (3:45)
Nick Bike - "Inner City" (Power mix) (4:48)
Review: Jim Sharp & Nick Bike are two of Canada's finest beat makers and here they turn their attention to the legendary Marvin Gaye. His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums. They're crisp and tight but funky, and the bendy chords and melodic motifs flesh it out. On the reverse is a Power Mix by Nick Bike that ups the weight and stomp of the drums and layers in the wordless ad libs from the original to bring the soul.

Disco Shitan (long version) (5:08)
Shitan (part 1) (3:09)
Shitan (part 2) (4:03)
Review: A near-mythical release from the Italian composer/bassist/karate don Pino Presti, Shitan was a one-off project in 1977. Slow, pensive, full of tension and loaded with detailed cinematic elements, it still sounds forward-thinking today. No surprises that the original 12"s regularly go for hundreds. Madly the long version never made it to the original 12" so this is the first time the full five minute version has been available. As if a repress wasn't enough reason to jump on this!

Magic (version) (6:13)
Review: Quintessential Brit funk from 1982; Side On was a one off project from three members of Freeez and Potion, and "Magic" was unfortunately, their only official release. Cited by the likes of Dam Funk as an influence, the raw funk oozing through the mix on both versions was ahead of its time and veering towards more of a proto house sound that kicks dancefloors like a mule. The standard vocal is much more focused on Rick Clarke's strong vocal while the version goes all out with full bass runs and the obligatory saxophone solo. Abracadabra... Reach out and grab this.

Don't Go Under (feat Moniquea) (3:46)
Island Of Magic (feat Amalia) (3:40)
Review: Milan-based Fred Simon steps up to The Sleepers with two delectable slices of modern funk featuring two incredible vocalists. If you're serious about contemporary twists on the boogie format then you won't want to miss this one. MoFunk Records' Moniquea lays down some serious sass on 'Don't Go Under' while Amalia, also spotted on Tokyo Dawn and Cherries Records, gets down low on 'Island Of Magic'. Both tracks are dripping with Moog-powered synth goodness, following slick chord progressions with a jazzy flair which nods to neo soul as much as vintage 80s funk, captured with an authoritative touch by Simon on his array of classic studio gear.

Nite Time Melody (4:41)
Nite Time Melody (instrumental) (5:33)
Review: Recorded in 1983, never released, forever the subject of hushed-toned disco and boogie collectors... Skytrane was the brainchild of boogie professor and studio scientist du jour Steve Mannen. And while no one knows why this never saw the official light of day, it's certainly been rescued and restored with care for this limited release. The production of this salubrious slap-bass / synth jam is enormous and Madeleine Davis's voice really shines over the groove. Unless you're playing the instrumental, of course, which is equally satisfying.
