Review: Hak Baker's debut album is a socially and politically charged one, that represents the war in his own mind as well as "the culture war on the streets of London and the individual battles of his community." The sound is a spin on mid-00s indie with cheeky chappy vibes and scruffy pop hooks. Earnest cuts like 'Bricks In The Wall' and 'Run' sit with more angsty cuts like 'DOOLALLY (Unreleased)'. Baker has made waves in the last year with sets at Glastonbury, on Jools Holland and BBC's new Eastbank site. The year ahead brings UK and Germany tours and no doubt many more fans off the back of this record.

Review: The Half Dead Organization was a short-lived rap group from Houston, Texas.The dropped just one album and one EP but for hardcore rap fans they are real classics. The original label was Johnny Palmer Entertainment but now it is Most Wanted that drop this reissue of the seminal self titled debut. It's a record that goes big on the gangsta sounds with hard hitting bars and beats and plenty of old school scratching and samples. It has aged well and though it has plenty of nostalgia it still stands up all these many years later.

Review: The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series was created by Madlib and Egon over the course of the Pandemic, and was a chance to give their creative friends the ability to stretch out and indulge in whatever type of music they wanted for release on the label. The music had to be great and able to be presented as a standalone album, just like the best 'Music Library' releases of the past, be they on labels like Italy's Sermi, Germany's Bruton, France's MP2000 and the UK's DeWolfe. And, like those albums, it had to work as easy, one-stop clearance for background cues in film and television production and, as producers have been indulging since the 1990s, for sampling. Joe Harrison's top-up to the series is just one of many, and brings a heated, undeniably infectious array of instrumentals to the table, all of which we're sure will be put to good use in the decades to come.

Review: The spirit of ghetto tech looms large over this full length offering from duo Hi Tech, surfacing on Omar S' FXHE label. That said, the usual straight forward pumped up booty bouncing beats that the genre flaunts are left well behind by an eclectic and well constructed trip across the rhythmic spectrum. 'Milf Milo' is one of the more regular sounding jams, riding a relatively conventional house/garage production, but elsewhere elements of trap, hip-hop, techno, footwork and electro all influence the genuinely innovative and original frameworks. Even better, the cleverness of the arrangements doesn't lessen the alarmingly thuggish timestretched and over-autotuned vocals, giving us the best of both worlds.

The Melbourne-based group have risen to well-deserved stardom with their expertly crafted, multi-layered slow jams backing the sensational vocal stylings of lead singer Nai Palm. Review: Melbourne-based band Hiatus Kaiyote share their latest album Love Heart Cheat Code via Brainfeeder. Hot on the heels of run-up singles 'Make Friends', the album continues Kaiyote's virtuosic phatjazz meanderings, and thematically revolves around ideas of true friendship and breezy love relationships, with the aforementioned lead single following lead singer Nai Palm hearing the following statement: "you don't make friends, you recognise them". It is seductive and sublime, stylish and effortless in its blurred lines and imperfect drums, with guest appearances from the always on form West London-based MC Lord Apex, plus XXL Freshmen and Interscope Records' artist Charles Hamilton. These are warm and organic sketches that suit backyard BBQs, lazy smoking sessions on the sofa and plenty of emotive situations in between. We already can't wait to hear more from this man.

Review: With this Unplugged album, American r&b and soul great Lauryn Hill veered away from the hip-hop influences of her groundbreaking debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998 to embrace a more stripped-down acoustic soul and folk sound. Humorously dubbing herself a 'hip-hop folk singer,' she adopted the role of a folk artist for the set and performed solo with just her acoustic guitar. Rather than revisiting her previous hits, Hill introduced entirely new material in a folk style, often taking time between songs to openly discuss her personal and artistic struggles and offered a raw and introspective glimpse into her journey.

Review: After a busy 2018, Da Buze Bruvaz emcee Him Lo is starting the new year strong with his first official solo project, and a fine one it is too. It shows that he is determined to prove he can stand alone, though he does team up with rising producer Giallo Point, who is revered for working with top dogs like SmooVth, Big Twins, Roc Marciano and more. Giallo crafts a lush yet gritty gangster soundtrack of dusty, hardcore loops that perfectly complements Him Lo's raw delivery. Stepping out from Da Buze Bruvaz without Clever 1, Him Lo showcases his real creative hunger and fine artistic versatility here on an album that is a grimy, unapologetic triumph.

Review: Hometown Heroes are the slick supergroup made up of audiovisual evangelist DJ Yoda, soundsystem shocker Brad Baloo of The Nextmen, and legendary rhyme supplier Edo G hailing from Boston. With the former two names hailing from London, UK, this latest collab makes for yet another heady, across-the-pond communication in sound. The eponymous record, following up April's 'Talk About It' pre-release single, amounts to a nostalgic, scratch-heavy foray into chill boom-bap with Britcore production overtones, making for a niche but skill-flaunting sound, with much wisdom, advice and love poured in.
