Review: XL boss Richard Russell's Everything Is Recorded returns with 'Porcupine Tattoo', an unexpected yet compelling collaboration with Bill Callahan and Noah Cyrus. The track, released via XL Recordings, came about during sessions at LA's infamous Chateau Marmont hotel, when Russell asked Callahan who he'd most like to write a song for. Callahan's surprising answer: Noah Cyrus. The result is a stripped-down folk tune with subtle gospel undertones, featuring Callahan's deep, pitched-down vocal layered alongside Cyrus' delicate voice. Russell's production, iminimal yet atmospheric, ihighlights the contrast between Callahan's gravelly tone and Cyrus' ethereal presence. Recorded during a rain-soaked week, the track evokes a sense of melancholy and intimacy. On Side-2 'Norm', is a tribute to comedian Norm Macdonald, featuring only Callahan. This release continues Russell's tradition of creating genre-blurring, evocative collaborations.

Review: Baltimore's gothic synthpop golden child Nourished By Time (Marcus Brown) has made a wonderful name for himself so far, flaunting a blithe, nigh ghostly vocal talent, usually paired with a lo-fi alt-pop aesthetic. The 'Catching Chickens' EP, his debut record for XL Recordings, continues this trend with a brand new five-track EP, following up 2023's equally great LP Erotic Probiotic 2. Written between 2022 - 2023 in his home studio in Baltimore and along his world travels this past year, Catching Chickens is derived from the film Rocky, and the iconic scene in which Rocky's trainer makes him chase and catch a flock of chickens as a test of agility. Channelling Brown's per usual contemplation of late stage capitalism and post-pandemic loneliness, every song here is indicative of a well-earned artistic progression.

Review: The Smile's latest remix compendium is a striking one, with two eminent producers reimagining tracks from the British rock band/Radiohead offshoot's latest and third album, CUTOUTS. This remix-set takes the core of the band's genre-blend sound, from art rock to experimental electronica, and contorts it into yet another division of volatile allotropes, this time welcoming light show IDM extravaganzist James Holden and East Kent musician Robert Stillman. Both versions are full displays of productive talent, humanisti, but still cognitively vector-mapped out in digi-space ahead of time, mirroring the abstracted, rather listless and amoral lyrics heard in the title track ("And your force means nothing...")

Review: The debut studio album by American rock band Electric Six came as a demented party record, building on the high production value, yet still enjoyable musical approach of mainstream pop and industrial rock in the late '90s and early noughties. The Detroit band had been going since 1996 but only struck the starry heights of fame in 2001, when 'Danger! High Voltage' established their bluesy, raunchily delicious dance-funk sound. The star cut on the record, and ensuing hilarities such as 'Naked Pictures (Of Your Mother)', 'I'm The Bomb' and 'Gay Bar', proved just the right dosage of tension and irreverence.

Review: Since turning his hand to music production midway through the last decade, XL Recordings owner Richard Russell has delivered a couple of predictably hard to pigeonhole, guest-packed albums as Everything is Recorded. Russell, of course, has an admirably bulging contacts book and as deep a knowledge of British music - be it hip-hop, grime, rave, jazz, experimental electronica or otherwise - as anyone. The depth of both is naturally evident on third album Temporary, with Russell and a dizzying list of guests delivering atmospheric, sample-rich fusions of head-nodding, hip-hop leaning grooves, field recordings-heavy sample collages, woozy dream pop, sub-heavy nods to UK bass, slow-motion neo-folk, blunted trip-hop, contemporary UK jazz, hazy Americana and much more besides. That it works as a coherent and sonically adventurous album is testament to Russell's increasing skill as a producer and standalone musical artist.

Review: Fontaines D.C.'s fourth album, Romance, marks the band's first collaboration with producer James Ford and represents their most adventurous and inventive work to date. Following the success of their acclaimed 2022 album Skinty Fia, which topped the UK and Irish charts and earned them International Group of the Year at the 2023 Brit Awards, Romance is set to push their sound further. The explosive lead single 'Starburster' was inspired by lead singer Grian Chatten's panic attack so features intense breath patterns and shifting dynamics. Elsewhere the band's evolution is there for all to hear with with influences from grunge, electronica, and hip-hop reflecting their ongoing growth and experimentation.

Review: Lesser Matters is an overlooked gem of Swedish indie-pop. Sweden's rich musical heritage spans various genres and eras, producing globally recognised names like The Cardigans, The Hives and Stina Nordenstam. However, beyond these well-known acts lies a treasure trove of lesser-known gems, including the innovative Wintergatan, the indiepop-to-electropop evolution of Red Sleeping Beauty, and the enchanting dream pop trio, The Radio Dept. Their name originates from a converted petrol station. Founded by Johan Duncanson and joined by Martin Larsson and later Daniel Tjader, the band has seen various line-up changes but consistently produced music that resonates deeply with listeners. Their debut album, blends lo-fi scuzzy guitars, shoegaze, and New Order-esque electropop, creating a sound that, while reminiscent of 1980s post-punk, remains distinctly their own. Tracks like 'Keen On Boys' and 'Why Won't You Talk About It?' exhibit their knack for combining subtle touches with heavenly melodies, while songs like 'Where Damage Isn't Already Done' demonstrate their ability to craft high-energy, emotionally charged music. The album seamlessly incorporates ambient sounds, creating an intimate and atmospheric listening experience.

Review: The Smile's new album Cutouts on XL Recordings features several tracks already debuted by the band of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner on their UK tour in March. Produced by Sam Petts-Davies, the ten track album was recorded in Oxford and Abbey Road Studios alongside their previous album, Wall of Eyes and features some lush string arrangements by the London Contemporary Orchestra and cover art by Stanley Donwood and Yorke. Wall of Eyes back in January reached number three on the UK charts and received critical acclaim from Pitchfork, Spin, and others with this new one likely to follow suit.
