Review: Hadsel, Zach Condon AKA Beirut's first album in four years, is named in honour of the place in which much of it was recorded, a remote Norwegian island that the neo-folk artist stayed in back in 2019. The tranquillity of his surroundings, as well as access to limited instruments (a lo-fi drum machine, a church organ, a basic synthesiser and his trusty acoustic guitar, is reflected in the beauty and slow-burn nature of the music on show, which naturally pushes Condon's distinctive, emotionally charged vocals to the fore and tends towards the atmospheric and musically opaque. The results are genuinely beguiling, with our picks of a very strong bunch including 'The Tern', where Condon's voice sails above sustained organ chords, a tribal-tinged rhythm track, and life-affirming vocal harmonies, and the brass-enhanced warmth of 'So Many Plans'.

Review: In honour of Record Store Day 2025, Canadian-American alt-rockers Big Wreck have decided to reissue one of their most popular albums, 2012's The Albatross. Available in limited numbers (only 1,000 of this CD version was pressed), it not only includes the freshly remastered original album in full, but also three alternate versions, rare bonus cut 'Fade Away', and a raucous live recording of title track 'Albatross'. The original album remains a timeless alt-rock classic where raw guitar riffs, bluesy solos and Ian Thurnley's distinctive lead vocals wrap around thickset bass and punchy drums. For proof, check standouts 'Wolves', 'Glass Room' and the rowdy 'The Rest of the World'.

Review: Violin extraordinaire and singer Andrew Bird teams up with an Americana icon, whose star has risen and is continuing to rise - Madison Cunningham. Bird says of Cunningham that she is one of the most talented musicians he's ever encountered. Together they've covered the 1973 album Buckingham Nicks - Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's pre-Fleetwood Mac LP and done a brilliant job of it. Buckingham Nicks was a flop commercially when it was released and despite the duo's subsequent success it was never remastered or re-released digitally, so hard to come by. Thankfully, Cunningham and Bird bring this underrated gem into the limelight and do so in style. "The best reason to cover anyone is that little part of you that thinks you might do it better. This album epitomizes excess and confidence and it only made sense to embody that spirit ourselves," says Bird in a press release. And he's quite right - there's no misplaced arrogance here - they've nailed this homage to a classic.

Review: Bright Eyes' Five Dice, All Threes is a remarkable addition to their storied discography, showcasing a blend of raw intensity and delicate introspection. The self-produced album, featuring guest appearances from Cat Power, Matt Berninger, and Alex Orange Drink, shows off the band's evolving sound. Conor Oberst's hauntingly urgent vocals drive the album's visceral impact, while the band's tight-knit synergy with Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott shines through. Embracing spontaneity and the chaotic energy of their influences, the album marries raucous rock with contemplative, psychedelic moments. Tracks like 'El Capitan' fuse Johnny Cash-esque rhythms with melancholic brass, while 'Tiny Suicides' and 'All Threes' offer novel, introspective turns. The album's dynamic rangeifrom garage-fueled anthems to intricate, jazzy compositionsireflects Bright Eyes' capacity for deep, emotional storytelling. Five Dice, All Threes is both a nod to their legacy and a thrilling leap into their future, celebrating imperfections as a source of strength and meaning.

Review: Coldplay's Moon Music is a typically lush and atmospheric pop-rock journey that makes another step in the band's continued evolution. Blending their famous anthemic sound with some more celestial and experimental elements, the album feels both expansive and intimate. Songs like 'Light Through the Veil' and 'Celestial Echoes' offer reflective ambient tones, while tracks like 'Lunar Phases' carry uplifting cosmic energy. The band's seamless incorporation of electronic elements and orchestral flourishes gives Moon Music a dreamlike quality with Chris Martin's vocals guiding listeners through themes of love, unity and transcendence. This album is a refreshing work for those who are into such sounds and it confirms Coldplay are still pushing creative boundaries.

Review: Futurismo proudly present the release all hardcore Devo fans have been waiting for: Art Devo 1973-1977, a lovingly packaged box set housing rare, unheard and obscure mind-blowers sourced directly from the vaults of The De-Evolution Band. This anthology takes you from the band's initial conception in Akron, Ohio to the moment before the world woke up to them, in a collection of sonic and visual art that captures Devo at the dawn of industrial death. This is a one-time only, strictly limited edition box set, never to be remade. De-evolution is real. The art of Devo is real. Here is the evidence.

Review: With Jimi Goodwin having retired from touring duties, this album takes on a whole new level of significance as it brings to question whether this album marks the end of the road for them as a unit. We certainly hope that it's just the beginning of a new era as they sound at the top of their game and reassert their reputation as one of the best British bands. The achingly beautiful 'Renegade' is right up there with their Lost Souls era and featured some stunning lyrics that tug at the heart strings: "As you walk out the door / Then your walking out, you're out forever." Meanwhile, 'Cold Dreaming' has an epic feel to it and is Leeds indie sorts The Music-esque - it's lush and orchestral with an epic chorus melody that will have you punching the air triumphantly. One to crank up on the car stereo and wind down the windows for definitely.

Review: It's now 25 years since Echo and the Bunnymen reformed (the Liverpool-born band initially disbanded in 1993) and recorded 'Evergreen', their seventh studio album. While reviews were mixed at the time, there's no doubt that it's as jangly, timeless-sounding and sonically gorgeous as any of their more acclaimed albums of the '80s and early '90s. Given that it was released at the height of 'Britpop' (Liam Gallagher provided backing vocals on 'Nothing Lasts Forever', a by-product of Oasis recording in the studio next-door), it's sound is far baggier, looser and warmer than much of the music being made by their younger rivals. On this expanded anniversary edition, the original (if remastered) set is joined by a disc of live recordings, both from their own shows and promotional radio sessions, all of which were laid to tape between 1997 and '99.

Review: Lora Logic, co-founder of UK punk legends X-Ray Spex, was famously ousted before recording their 1977 debut, Germ Free Adolescents. Undeterred, she formed Essential Logic, a post-punk outfit celebrated for angular sax lines and distinctive vocals. Their 1979 debut, Beat Rhythm News (Waddle Ya Play?), reached number 11 on the UK Indie chart and now arrives on CD to mark its anniversary. Logic reunited with X-Ray Spex for Conscious Consumer in 1995 and revived Essential Logic with 2022's Logically Yours boxset and 2024's Rekalibrated, featuring a diverse array of remixers. This Deluxe Edition includes the original album, a compilation of 1978-1983 recordings and new sleeve notes penned by Lora herself.

Review: After turning his hand to big band jazz on his previous album, Father John Misty (John Tilman to friends and family) returns to more familiar sonic territory on this sixth set. The Sanskrit title apparently translates to "great cremation ground", offering a hint to the weighty and philosophical themes behind some of the singer-songwriter's lyrics this time around. In many ways, it is a classic Father John Misty album: all sweeping strings, Americana-tinged folk-rock, grandiose 1970s pop-rock productions, funky-as-hell nods to Rare Earth ('She Cleans Up') effortlessly emotive vocals and White Album-era Beatles excellence.

Review: This is Guided By Voices' 41st(!) album. And you rightfully may ask how do you go about keeping a band together for that long? GBV thankfully have a solution to that and it involves leader Robert Pollard being the sole constant member. Nevertheless, this album features the longest-lasting lineup of GBV ever (Robert Pollard, Doug Gillard, Kevin March, Mark Shue and Bobby Bare Jr) and they're on invigorating form, guided by some righteous principals. "I wanted to get a little more sonic diversity for this album," says Pollard, "So I asked each member of the band to record all the instruments for one song and I did three songs myself. For the rest of the songs, we used a lot of different approaches to the recording of both the instruments and the vocals." Pollard adds, "I wanted to create, hopefully, an experience, kind of a wild ride, where the listener would want to hear it multiple times in order to grasp all the sections and fields of sound to discover something new with each listen." Anthemic, timeless and completely worthy of repeat listens, this tireless indie rock group have audibly hit their brief.

Review: Iggy Pop's performance at the 2023 Montreux Jazz Festival is a thrilling showcase of both his legendary past and revitalised present. Marking his third appearance at the prestigious event, Iggy delivers a fiery set with a seven-piece band, reinvigorating Stooges classics like 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' and 'T.V. Eye', while captivating the crowd with solo anthems such as 'Lust for Life' and 'The Passenger'. The show also features new material from his recent album Every Loser, including 'Modern Day Ripoff' and 'Frenzy', proving his ongoing relevance in the rock scene. Recorded with pristine multi-track audio and complemented by stunning 4K visuals, the concert blends the raw energy of vintage Iggy with the vitality of his current creative resurgence. This live recording captures a moment of remarkable musical power, reaffirming Iggy Pop as one of the most dynamic and enduring figures in rock music.

Review: Now 21 years into a hugely successful career, you'd forgive Kings of Leon for resting on their laurels. That they've not done that with Can We Have Fun, their ninth studio album. Instead of dialling in alt-rock-tinged American rock anthems - their stock-in-trade - they've instead delivered a set that's as spiky, unpredictable and infectious as their earliest work, while also making space for moodier, slower and more atmospheric songs. So, on one hand you have recent single 'Mustang', an infectious slab of garage-rock funkiness, and the weighty Foo Fighters riffs and booming bass of 'Nothing To Do'; on the other the slow-motion beats, effects-laden ambient textures, soft-burn guitar solos and dreamy sonics of 'Split Screen' and the country-goes-indie flex of 'Actual Daydream'.

Review: This double disc set showcases two near legendary concerts by former Smiths front man (and celebrated contrarian) Morrissey, both of which were recorded for radio broadcast. Disc one features a 1991 concert in Hamburg, recorded during the promotion of his sophomore solo album Kill Uncle and featuring mostly material from his first two post-Smiths sets - as well as a deliciously raucous cover of the Jam's 'That's Entertainment'. Disc two, meanwhile, offers up seven tracks recorded in London in 1995, at a time when Morrissey had become a controversial figure thanks to his use of imagery and lyrics linked by some to unacceptable nationalism. It's arguably the stronger of the two sets in terms of performance and sound, with the versions of 'Dagenham Dave' and 'The Operation' standing out.

Review: The National's Rome, is a 21-track live album capturing the band's June 3, 2024 performance at the stunning Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone in - you guessed it - the Italian capital. Mixed by Peter Katis, the album spans over two decades of The National's career, featuring iconic tracks like 'Bloodbuzz Ohio', 'I Need My Girl' and 'Fake Empire', alongside newer material such as 'Eucalyptus' and 'Tropic Morning News'. The National, formed in 1999, are an American rock band known for their emotional depth and intricate songwriting. With Matt Berninger's baritone vocals and the instrumental prowess of brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner, alongside Scott and Bryan Devendorf, the band has built a reputation for powerful live performances and critically acclaimed albums. Known for their introspective lyrics and rich, textured sound, The National continues to evolve after two decades. This live recording showcases the band's ability to transform their songs in the concert setting, offering refreshed renditions and hidden gems like 'Runaway' and 'Murder Me Rachael'. Known for their intense live shows, Rome immortalises the emotional and fiery energy The National brings to the stage.

Review: Osees, led by the visionary John Dwyer, embark on a bold sonic departure with their upcoming album, Sorcs 80. Shedding their guitars and keyboards in favor of synths and drum loops, the band crafts a space rock odyssey that's both infectious and deeply atmospheric. Dwyer's penchant for experimentation shines through as the album brims with a wall of percussion and haunting saxophone melodies courtesy of Cansfis Foote & Brad Caulkins. Recorded on vintage eight-track tape, the album captures a raw intensity rarely seen in modern productions. Tracks like 'Cassius, Brutus & Judas' exemplify Osees' signature punk ethos, blending poppy hooks with heady lyrics that delve into themes of betrayal and human frailty. The result is a mesmerising blend of punk urgency and sci-fi intrigue with an avant-garde punk.

Review: Pale Saints' breakthrough album, In Ribbons, turns 30 years old this year and so the label that first put it out is looking back with this superb new anniversary edition. The album was a key driver in the shoegaze scene and became much loved for its ethereal sound. That has aged well here with bittersweet pop in tracks like 'Thread Of Light' as Meriel Barham's vocal delivery reaches through time and still hits the mark today. Musically the record blends bruising riffs and dreamy atmospherics and has been freshly remastered for this special commemorative CD edition which should appeal to fans old and new.

Recorded in a rapid yet collaborative burst of creativity, the album captures a raw essence reminiscent of their early days. The band still delivers a potent rock-forward sound with muscular guitar leads and Vedder's iconic vocals. Tracks like 'Scared Of Fear' and 'Wreckage' showcase the band's trademark grandeur, while 'Setting Sun' serves as a raggedly majestic closer. Dark Matter proves to be very strong album which should excite longtime fans.

Review:  The latest of Radiohead's reissues is an utter avalanche of material. 'Kid A Mnesia' itself is an 'album mashup' between their two albums Kid A and Amnesia; both projects are remastered and released side-by-side on the same LP. It doesn't stop there: for the fanatics, there's an exclusive third disc, Kid Amnesiae, which contains formerly unheard material both recording sessions, as well as Kid Amnesiette, a cassette of B-sides. This ultra-deluxe edition is, decidedly, one for the ultra-fans. Besides the radical electronic fever dreams making up both projects, this version contains the never-before-heard song 'If You Say The Word' on the bonus CD. Remastered on vinyl and cut at half the speed of the original LP, it's an audiophile's banquet. Also watch out for the exclusive booklet of drawings that come with the special edition of this special edition.

The album opens with the high-energy duo 'Knock Yourself Out XD' and 'Cheerleader,' both are uplifting synths and powerful choruses that are sure to light up live performances. While Smile! dives into themes of fame with a playful, tongue-in-cheek approach, it's clear that Robinson is having fun with this new direction.Tracks like 'Kitsune Maison Freestyle' stand out with their irresistible, bouncy rhythms, and 'Mona Lisa' delivers a breezy, laid-back vibe. 'Russian Roulette' shines with a stunning chorus that lingers long after the song ends. While the album's irony might feel a bit heavy-handed at times, there's an undeniable charm in the way Robinson blends humor with heartfelt moments. There are quieter tracks that offer a nice contrast as well. Smile! is an exciting departure from Robinson's previous work and it's an entertaining ride that's worth a listen for its infectious energy and spirit.

Review: Rosetta Stone, one of the most enduring bands from the influential second wave of gothic rock, returns with a brand-new studio album called Under the Weather. Known for their dark romance and chiming guitars, the new album stays true to form with lush keyboards and an undercurrent of sinister nostalgia, thanks to bandleader Karl North. Fans can look forward to pre-release singles and a significant media blitz to accompany this album, their first in 4 years. Formed in the 1980s by Porl King and Karl North, Rosetta Stone initially captured the jangly-guitar sounds of gothic rock. Their big break came after supporting The Mission on tour. The band later transitioned to a more electronic sound before disbanding in 1998. Now, gothic mastermind Porl King is back with an album that promises to transport fans back to goth's heyday. Like their namesake, British goth legends Rosetta Stone were pivotal in bridging the gap between the first wave of gothic rock and the emerging underground scene. Their music brought a romantic element to a dynamic era of black fashion and experimental freak culture.

Review: Shellac's sixth studio album, To All Trains, is a demonstration to the band's distinctive sound. Recorded over several years and mastered by Bob & Steve at Chicago Mastering Service, the album features Shellac's trademark minimalist sound, characterised by asymmetric time signatures, repetitive rhythms, and angular guitar sound. Albini's and Weston's surreal, bitingly sarcastic lyrics add to the album's unique atmosphere. With its complex and unconventional approach to music, To All Trains showcases Shellac's mastery of their craft and their unwavering commitment to their distinctive sonic vision.

Review: Captured during their sold-out show at Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome on April 6, 2024, this live album features the band in fine form. The band's enduring ability to electrify audiences with a career-spanning setlist is fully evident here while this edition is pressed on clear & glitter vinyl for added visual appeal. From the thunderous opener 'Waterfront' to the anthemic closer 'Sanctify Yourself', the album is a celebration of the band's evolution, blending early post-punk intensity with the polished grandeur of their later work. Classics like 'Love Song' and 'Sons & Fascination' retain their sharp edges, while 'Let There Be Love' and 'See The Lights' shimmer with melodic depth as the band settled into their second decade of album making at the time. The emotional weight of 'Belfast Child' is undeniable, and the closing trioi'Don't You (Forget About Me)', 'Alive & Kicking' and 'Sanctify Yourself' will leave you standing and applauding the performance - even in your own front room. With crisp, dynamic production and a stellar recording and blending of the band, Live in the City of Diamonds proves that Simple Minds remain a commanding force, their music as vital as ever.

Review: "No one is more surprised to be here than me!" mutters Steve Albini as he sets himself to introduce to the stage the mighty Sonic Youth. In October 1987, when this show was happening, Albini was banned from the Cabaret Metro venue in Chicago where it was being held, but Sonic Youth demanded his banishment be overturned. It sets the triumphant mood as a frenzy ensues. Guitars churn like chainsaws on Evol album cut 'Tom Violence'; 'White Kross' is prime Lee Ranaldo with tremolo picking of the highest order and 'Stereo Sanctity' is all about Thurston Moore. Riding the wave of momentum that their album Sister had imparted on the punk scene, this is Sonic Youth in their prime and up there with the greatest live rock albums of all time.

Review: Compiling the complete works of Splat! onto one CD has been desired by their fans for years now. Finally, this British post-punk band that defined the genre's chaotic, off-kilter spirit is now complete to one special. Formed between Nottingham and Derby, Splat! was a blend of misfits influenced by The Pop Group, PiL, The Fall and The Birthday Party, with quirky musical tastes that spanned from punk to jazz, noise rock, and obscure prog. The compilation features 19 tracks, including their first 7" single and a 12" EP, along with unreleased material, capturing the band's raw energy and absurdist charm. Splat! were known for their anarchic live performances, often involving blood, sweat and tears. Their debut single, released in 1983 on Ron Johnson Records, sold out quickly, and the follow-up EP in 1984 continued their DIY ethos. Despite critical praise and a John Peel session, the band's inability to self-promote led to their breakup. However, the compilation brings their best moments together for the first time on CD. And Yeah So encapsulates the band's unique blend of messy, high-octane punk and absurdist humor, offering listeners a deeply authentic look at an era of post-punk energy and anti-commercialism.

Review: Berlin-based Dina Summer - a synth-loving trio fronted by the suitably sassy and no-holds barred singer Dina P - impressed with their Italo-disco and turn-of-the-millennium electroclash inspired debut album, Rimini. Three years in, they return with an arguably even stronger set - the notably darker, more stylish and more new wave-influenced Girl's Gang. Many of their trademark elements remain to the fore - Dina P's dead-eyed spoken word vocals, the use of vintage drum machine rhythms and sequenced basslines - but this time round come accompanied by black mascara-clad nods to post-punk, New Romantic, goth-rock and Depeche Mode style synth-pop sounds. As previously stated, it is genuinely stylish and impeccably observed stylistically, but what makes it stand out is the substance behind the sheen.

Review: Although most associated with punk thanks to his now canonical history of the movement, England's Dreaming, Jon Savage has always had far broader taste than most - not to mention an acute sense that the late 1970s were aa genuinely exciting musical free-for-all that paved the way for much of what came next. This excellent double-disc compilation gives a taste of what he was listening to in that period, moving between reggae, dub (the Revolutionaries, Joe Gibbs & The Professionals), throbbing Euro-disco (Space, Giorgio Moroder), American garage-rock (Iggy Pop), spaced-out spoken word eccentricity (John Cooper Clarke), formative new wave synth-pop (The Normal, The Human League), industrial (Cabaret Voltaire), punk (and lots of it), and much more besides.

Review: What's not to love here? It's a best of proper 80s indie pop, so it delves into C86 territory, with the likes of Primal Scream, The Wedding Present and The Pastels all represented. Other highlights include Scottish legends - and pre-C86 indie label pioneers - Orange Juice and their banger 'Dying Day', which still sounds soulful and ahead of its time. The Field Mice give us a masterclass on vocal reverb with their shoegaze ripper 'Sensitive' and The Railway Children evoke The Smiths on 'Brighter'. This is a stellar collection that truly captures the best sounds of the 80s.

Review: Icons of the New Romantic movement and synth pop pioneers Visage were a phenomenal live act right up until their untimely demise. Lead singer Steve Strange sadly passed away in 2015. An organisation known as The Steve Strange Collective was announced shortly after his death and are touchingly releasing this album in his honour. 2013 was the year Visage toured their first album in 28 years - Hearts and Knives - and this compilation features the best recordings from their 13-date tour. Even though they had a lot of line-up changes over the years, their iconic reputation meant they could piece together a terrific band. With Robin Simon of Ultravox on guitar, Logan Sky on synth and Barney Johnny Marter on drums, vocalists Steve Strange and Lauren Duvall's had the ultimate backing for a party vibe full of swagger and style. And it still sounds cutting-edge to this day.

Review: 25 years have now passed since Liverpool legend Pete Wylie and his long-term backing band released Songs of Strength & Heartbreak, which marked the post-punk era combo's return to action after 16 long years. Something of a triumphant return, the set flits between raucous punk energy ('Never Loved as a Child'), Oasis-ish riffs on mid-late period Beatles ('Sing All The Saddest Songs', 'Disneyland Forever'), riff-heavy post-Britpop indie-rock ('I Still Love You', post-punk headiness ('Loverboy') and all manner of orchestrated, reach-for-the-ceiling sing-alongs ('Hey! Mona Lisa'). To mark the album's birthday, Chrysalis has served up this expanded 'deluxe' edition. Unusually, this time round CD1 boasts the album as it was originally demo'd and produced in 1998 - including a slew of songs that were subsequently shelved - with the 'released' version (2000) nestled on CD2.
