As Long As I Can Hold My Breath (By Night)
Review: By 2004, Harold Budd was a sufferer of chronic "no, really, this is my final album" syndrome; he had claimed Avalon Sutra as his artistic curtain call, which would reach its apotheotic height under the David Sylvian and his label Samadhisound. The reality was that Budd did go on to record many another album, including a Philip Glass tribute and a solo piano album, Perhaps (2007). But this, his intended retirement, was probably his most interesting. Florid neo-noir soundscapes - mured behind soft-saturated limits of sax and trellised piano - glean an unusual sense of a Lynchian underside to domesticity and normality. A soundtrack to a part-corrupted life, this "Arabesque" record transitions into utter serenity by the time of 'Little Heart', whose faint triangles and swelling pads nail an impure and contradictory sense of alterity, resignation and peace.

Review: John Coltrane's exploration of modal jazz shines through in this energetic and thought-provoking performance. Opening with 'Naima,' the track takes an introspective yet powerful approach, allowing us to see Coltrane's unique ability to blend intricate melodic lines with a deep sense of emotional expression. The rhythm section, led by Elvin Jones on drums, locks in with Coltrane's saxophone, creating a sense of tension and release throughout the album. Tracks like 'Cousin Mary' introduce a playful, upbeat energy, offering a contrast to the more meditative moments. This release is a testament to Coltrane's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining an innate emotional depth.

Compared To What
Cold Duck Time
Kathleen's Theme
You Got It In Your Soulness
The Generation Gap
Review: One of soul jazz's most electrifying live recordings and a spontaneous triumph born from an unrehearsed, last-minute collaboration at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. Pianist and vocalist Les McCann, alongside tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Baileyiwho had never played together beforeideliver an exuberant, groove-heavy set that captures the raw energy of the moment. Despite the lack of preparation, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable and the resulting performance remains one of the most talked-about live jazz recordings. The set opens with 'Compared to What', McCann's politically charged anthem railing against Nixon and the Vietnam War, propelled by a relentless groove and impassioned vocals. The band locks into a deep pocket, with Harris and Bailey trading fiery, blues-inflected solos. 'Cold Duck Time' follows with an irresistible bounce, its bluesy vamp providing the perfect backdrop for extended improvisation. The mood shifts with 'Kathleen's Theme', where Harris takes center stage, exploring the melody with fluid grace before 'You Got It in Your Soulness' brings the session back to its gospel-infused roots, McCann's percussive piano stabs and Donald Dean's driving beat igniting the crowd. Decades later, Swiss Movement still exudes an infectious, unfiltered joyiproof that great jazz can thrive in the most unplanned circumstances. It's a high-spirited, deeply soulful document of musicians seizing the moment with dazzling results.

Kiyoshi Yamaya - "Ryukyu No Matsuri 1"
Kifu Mitsuhashi - "Tanchame"
Review: This vinyl-only survey refracts Okinawan folk traditions through vivid jazz-funk and big band arrangements, creating a prismatic, highly listenable archive of Japan's southern soul. Kiyoshi Yamaya's influence runs deep, his arrangements glowing with cinematic elegance on 'Ryukyu Miyabi 2' through to the festival-like drive of 'Ryukyu No Matsuri 1'. The percussive triptych 'Nishinjo-bushi/Asadoya Yunta/Tanchame' shifts with deft energy, while his solo pieces like 'Ryukyu No Sora' feel airier, almost impressionistic. Tadaaki Misago & Tokyo Cuban Boys stir big band verve into 'Tanchame-bushi' and 'Hatoma-bushi', while Minoru Murayama's 'Asadoya Yunta' leans more contemplative. Kifu Mitsuhashi's takes on 'Tanchame' and 'Asadoya Yunta' feel grounded in breath and space, balancing the brassier moments with shakuhachi-led intimacy. The sequencing cleverly blurs the line between groove-heavy reimagination and respectful homage, shaping a dialogue that's rhythmic, emotive and alive. A treasure trove for collectors of Wamono, Asian jazz and crossover rarities and a striking monument to the genreless fluidity of folk, when placed in the right hands.

Africa/Brass (reissue)
Africa
Greensleeves
Blues Minor
Song Of The Underground Railroad
Review: Now receiving a reissue with a focused selection of four key tracks, Africa/Brass remains one of the most distinctive entries in John Coltrane's catalogue. Originally released in 1961, the album marked his debut for Impulse! Records and a bold detour into large ensemble territory. On the surface, it does not radically redefine jazz, but its genius lies in how it reimagines familiar structures with fresh perspective. The title track, taking up an entire side, is a masterclass in minimalism and expression. Anchored by a single chord and two double bassesione bowed, one pluckediit unfolds with dynamic shifts in tone and texture, moving from spiritual calm to orchestral thunder. Despite its scale, the arrangement breathes, allowing space for Coltrane and his group to explore vast emotional terrain. 'Greensleeves' and 'Blues Minor' are sturdy companion pieces. The former is a reinterpretation of the folk classic, transformed through Coltrane's rich phrasing and Elvin Jones' explosive drumming. 'Blues Minor' swings harder, spotlighting the full ensemble with more open solo sections. Arranged by Eric Dolphy, the album trades some spontaneity for depth and cohesion. It remains grounded and earthy, another ace in Coltrane's heayweight pack.

Review: Marshall Allen's Ghost Horizons is a powerful extension of his lifelong cosmic jazz mission, expanding the legacy of the Sun Ra Arkestra into new, interstellar realms. Since assuming leadership of the Arkestra in 1995, Allen has rejuvenated Sun Ra's vision with space-effected alto saxophonic stamina. Formed in 2022, Ghost Horizons unites Allen with Arkestra guitarist DMHOTEP and a genre-spanning collective, comprising jazz luminaries Immanuel Wilkins, James Brandon Lewis, and indie experimental figures from Yo La Tengo, The War On Drugs, and Wolf Eyes. A kaleidoscopic project, it draws from nine improvisational live shows, later edited into an exodic sonic voyage by and by the unknown.

Les Sylphides/Love For Three Oranges
Les Sylphides/Love For Three Oranges (180 gram audiophile vinyl LP)
Cat: AAPC 2621. Rel: 26 Sep 25
Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

Review: Launched in the early 70s by jazz obsessive Takeshi Fujii, Three Blind Mice aimed to become Japan's answer to Blue Note. At the same time as spotlighting then-unknowns like Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Isao Suzuki, the label brought in established names to broaden appeal, mapping a critical moment in Japanese jazz. This new collection, curated by DJ Tatsuo Sunaga, consummates his assessment of the label as "the origin of the new sensation of jazz": vibes, piano, electronica fusion, and the crispest of crisp recordings from Isao Suzuki and Naosuke Miyamoto are among the few standout motifs of both this TBM compilation and the J-jazz canon writ large.

Review: Genre-defying Texan jazz collective Snarky Puppy grew out of a loose ensemble of music school players and quickly gained a reputation for jaw-dropping live sets and the involvement of virtuosi. After a video of founding member Lalah Hathaway literally singing chords went viral in the early 10s, their international success was set in stone. We Like It Here, originally released in 2014 and now reissued in an expanded form, is widely seen as a turning point: recorded live in the Netherlands, it hears the band on a knife edge between studio precision and improvisatory flair. Viral track 'Lingus', with its synth solo by Cory Henry, helped propel the band into cult status and prompted countless reaction videos. This new edition now widens the view, adding alternate takes and a fresh mixdown, offering a polished bottling of the original sessions.

Review: Joe Pass had only just begun gaining wider recognition when he stepped into the studio in 1975 with Ray Brown and Bobby Durham to pay tribute to Duke Ellington, who had died just weeks earlier. The result was Portraits Of Duke Ellington, a warm, loose, and unflashy session that swings without fuss through eight Ellington standards plus Juan Tizol's 'Caravan'. Tracks like 'In A Mellow Tone', 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' and 'I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)' draw out Pass's effortless touch and improvisational fluency, with the trio locked in throughout. This new Analogue Productions cut comes from the original master tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab.

Blues For 2 (180 gram audiophile vinyl LP)
Cat: AAPJ 188. Rel: 11 Jul 25
Review: Zoot Sims and Joe Pass recorded together only once, but the chemistry of this 1982 duo session between the two American sax saxons is instant; exothermic. Pass, always light on his feet, met his perfect foil in Sims, who by this point had found an understated but articulate sound. Recorded late in both men’s careers, the session pairs Pass’s harmonic clarity with Sims’s warm tone and melodic instinct, especially on the ballad ‘Remember’, where his phrasing keeps the tension between wistful and conversational. Elsewhere, faster tunes roll out with unforced swing and shared purpose. Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, this edition comes on an 180-gramme vinyl record.
