Review: Cinematic and evocative, listening to The Autumns is an intoxicating experience, taking the listener on magical flights of musical fancy. Their music soars, filled with majestic guitar lines and elegiac melodies. Vocalist Matt Kelly possesses a truly astonishing voice. His effortless, angelic falsetto and the power and range of his vocals share much common ground with those of Jeff Buckley. "Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys" is in many ways a departure from their earlier work. The songs slice and dice with a frenzied precision. This Bella Union release is essential.

Review: In the aftermath of the Brexit vote the question on many people's minds is 'what's going to happen'...well an answer for some, at least, was a new BC Camplight album, fittingly named, Deportation Blues. Recording in Liverpool's Whitewood studios, Brian Christinzio is said to have locked himself in a windowless studio and recorded all songs almost exclusively in the dark. With title track Deportation Blues its most illuminating result, the album overall is a more electrified opus, musically speaking, than his previous long players How To Die In The North and Blink Of A Nihilist. Featuring Luke Barton on guitars and synth, alongside guitarist Tom Rothery and multi-instrumentalist/ backing singer Ali Bell, BC Camplight lights it up again.

Review: "A document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in, and it's no one's fault."
So says Brian Christinzio, AKA BC Camplight, of his sixth album. As ever, it's a musical masterpiece packing dense layers of instrumental experimentation and theses-worthy lyrical poignance. An artist who has never played by the musical rules, fans of strong juxtapositions will again be in there element, with a tracklist that spans grunge-y garage rock, twisted barroom journeyman stuff, theatrical guitar pop, and plenty more. But the sounds themselves are only one half the genius. When it comes to arrangements, things are as playful as they are innovative, keeping listeners guessing as to how structures will pan out.

Review: It may be debatable whether B-sides still exist in the here and now, yet beneath the very slightly prosaic title of this compendium lurks the work of an outfit who - despite having essentially surfed along a very definitive wave of sun-dappled languour since their inception - are capable of delivering offcuts that are every bit the equal of most folks' hits. True, the Spinal Tap insult of 'the musical growth rate of this band cannot even be charted' could be applied to Beach House, but when their catalogue over the ten years of their existence esentially consists of a variety of themes on opiated bliss, we're only too happy to embark on the ride.

Review: Long-time indie darlings and American dream pop duo Beach House barely ever put a foot wrong, and you won't find a misstep on this, their fifth album, either. Depression Cherry was co-produced by the band with Chris Coady and first came back in 2015. It was written over two years before that and saw the band return to a more simplistic sound with fewer instruments, tunes constructed around a main melody and live drums featuring less than in the past. This was in response to having enlarged their sound as the venues they played grew ever bigger, but dialing it back in was a good move if you ask us.

Review: 2022's stunning album Once Twice Melody was a fine example of Beach House doing what they do best - living bang up to that name, with intimate-but epic instrumentation falling somewhere between surf-y jangle and grand shoegaze. 'Become' is definitely on a similar tip, and as such feels much like an extension of the long form.
Dig a little deeper, though, and scratches begin to show. While the full-length record represented Beach House reaching for the stars, or at least the moon, and stepping into the role of festival headliners, here the sense of pure confidence and occasion is less pronounced. That may not be a bad thing, mind, because while Once came across like a finished article, refined and prepared, things here seem somehow rawer, as though we're sitting in on a session as oppose to getting the signed off product.

Review: Beach House's lates album, Once Twice Melody is the first one the band themselves have ever produced in its entirety. It was recorded in three different locations - Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, United Studio in Los Angeles, and Apple Orchard Studios in Baltimore. The band used a real and full live string ensemble for the first time, too, and David Campbell took care of arrangements. It is a double album that features 18 songs presented in four chapters that take in many different sound and structures centred around acoustic guitar, some around drums, and some around electronics.

Review: Beach House return with another inevitably washed out dream pop pipe-fantasy - and perhaps a magnum opus, being 18 tracks long - 'Once Twice Melody'. We can confirm the LP scales a more minimal and wondrous sound than their career-definer, 'Depression Cherry'. As ever, noir slow jams canopy an ever-ghostlier vocal palette on lead singles like 'Over And Over' and 'Superstar'. Even a live string ensemble was used in its recording. Stonkingly, it comes in various limited-edition formats. One, the "gold" edition, includes a gold and clear 2xLP record in a gold-embossed, hinged box. The "silver" edition is housed in a silver embossed black sleeve. Oh, and there's a cassette version too, for all you indie heads out there.

Review: A reissue of Beach House's fifth studio album 'Depression Cherry', without any extra fanfare - these dream pop dramatists don't need it. Originally released in 2015, the 2021 edition is a lightweight silver vinyl edition, housed in a deeper red velvet sleeve with a printed inner housing. There's no extra fluff on this one, either. It's simply the original 9 songs, which we are now reminded are enviable in their hazy, Christmas-jingly, shoegaze blur. It's no coincidence that this is the album that elavated Beach House to a new level of prominence and acclaim; their sound is fittingly uplifting and maximal, as Legrand and Scally's ghosted vocals whirl like a flying carpet or sonic geyser, come to propel us towards higher altitudes. Besides, it's a sign of a great 'ethereal' band to call an album of this beauty, grandeur and subtlety "aggressive". This is your chance to remember it.

Review: Given the amount of energy he's put into his "Tim's Twitter Party" online listening events this year, it's perhaps surprising that Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess has found time to record new music. Ascent of the Ascended, his new EP, follows on from May's well-received solo album, I Love The New Sky, and lands on orange translucent vinyl. Fans will find plenty to cheer, including two songs recorded with, and produced by, Charles Heywood: the effervescent title track and 'Yours To Be', a deliciously jangling, life-affirming affair built around multi-tracked acoustic guitars, soft-touch percussion and lilting horn lines. The set's four other tracks, including a rather lovely new version of Charlatans classic 'The Only One I Know', were recorded "in session" during a Paste Magazine event in New York.

Review: At the time of writing this, The Charlatans are waking up having just sold out a brand new, state-of-the-art, much-anticipated venue in central Manchester - New Century Hall. Random fact? No, more a point about how enduring the outfit Tim Burgess leads still are. And at least part of that ongoing popularity stems from the incredible creativity in their back catalogue, which takes cues from acid house, 1960s psyche, and Barrett-era Pink Floyd.

Suffice to say, then, anytime Burgess does anything it's always worth listening to, and in Typical Music we have probably the best example in some time of how priceless an artist he is. It's pop, it's distorted rock 'n' roll, it's synthdom, epic balladry, experimental, and baggy trousered swagger. Simply put, it's Burgess on an audible high, and few things sound better.

Review: Fans of Explosions In The Sky no doubt read the band's new album title with a degree of trepidation. Would this be the grand finale it has always felt like the outfit were gearing up for? Hopefully not, but nevertheless it certainly has the power of a magnum opus. "Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we've all expanded on and made its own world," the group say of the new LP. "Our starting point [here] was the concept of an ending - death." If that sounds bleak then it might be worth reconsidering attitudes towards endings. Rather than wallowing, Explosions In the Sky do what they have always done so well here, but perhaps even better than before. Monumentally-sized operatic rock music highly influenced by classical, grand enough to see your entire life pass before the mind's eye as the keys, refrains and bombastic melodies unfold, reminding us that while nothing last forever, it was probably a blessing to be here in the first place.

And that's "here's what you could have won had you been able to attend this performance of one of our most treasured albums in one of the world's most aesthetically astounding venues". FOMO abounds, Red Rocks Amphitheatre is a proper bucket list muso haunt, setting gigs halfway up a Colorado mountain. Throw in live orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, and you've got yourself a truly life-affirming evening. Even on record, there's a tangible difference between the sonics here and the original, still it's an incredibly beautiful and grand album. Perhaps most pronounced during the heart-rendering string sweep of opener "Race For The Prize" (expect shivers), tracks such as "A Spoonful Weighs A Ton" and, of course, "Waitin' For A Superman" feel as though they have finally found their home.

Review: 'Transangelic Exodus' is Ezra Furman's rock 'n' roll concept opus following the pseudo-autobiographical story of Furman falling in love with a transangel and the two becoming outlaws on the run from the government and mysterious, intolerant and violent figures. Structurally and musically, every song feels like a new chapter as Furman explores a multitude of avenues, drawing strands of genres together to create something simultaneously strange and familiar. It's a stunningly well-formed and considered album, and Furman's storytelling makes for a visceral and thrilling ride, and this is perhaps his best work yet. In a time when values are changing so rapidly in favour of openness and acceptance, but intolerance still has societal footholds, albums that manage to be as joyously compelling, poetically written and acerbically counter-cultural in their message as 'Transangelic Exodus' feel more necessary and relevant than ever.

Review: Let's face facts, much as we adore the often dark, deeply personal and confessional work of John Grant he's not necessarily your go-to summer playlist. Boy From Michigan might start with a sultry Neo-jazz air that serves to disarm, but this is really the red herring before things take a dive into less comfortable and far more memorable and inescapable directions.

Following suit from previous outings in terms of themes, Grant invites us into his midwest childhood and coming of age years, exploring subjects such as repressed homosexuality, including mutual denial of intimate encounters, the battered Americana iconography that still haunts him to this day, and the death of a USA we once believed existed but probably never did. All told through waves of sometimes swirling, in other moments gentle, and occasionally upbeat synth pop joy, it's another work of art from one of our favourites.

Review: John Grant has earned a reputation for being "the misfit's misfit" - a musician and songwriter whose pained observations of American life, and in particular the death of the American Dream, have earned him a legion of fans and plenty of critical praise. Grant is in fine form on Boy From Michigan, his Cate Le Bon co-produced fifth solo album. Weary and frustrated in equal measure, the album's 12 tracks are musically retro-futurist (you'll hear lots of attractive fusions of 1980s New Wave, synth-pop and post-punk) but lyrically capture the paranoid and doom-laden feel of 2020, when Grant's core concerns were the pandemic (of course) and the U.S Presidential Election. This "deluxe" edition contains no bonus music, but a rather nice 36-page photo book, art prints and a lyric sheet.

Review: John Grant delivers a modern contemporary dose of synth pop in his Love Is Magic LP for Bella Union that was co-produced with Midlake's Paul Alexander. It provides the American with his fourth solo album, following 2015's Grey Tickles, Black Pressure, 2013's Pale Green Ghosts, and his 2010 debut Queen of Denmark. This LP, though, arguably provides a fresh thicket of neon-lit sounds that keep the irony palatable enough, "Diet Gum" perhaps the best example. For fans of the soundtrack to Drive, or Parisian duos Justice and Daft Punk, to the avant ballads of Laurie Anderson, Grant's pop kosmische here is a dazzling disco ball to be danced upon in your loudest colours and cackles of laughter.

Death Engine (The Field remix) (9:06)

Review: Since first emerging in 2011 via the globally renowned Bella Union stable, Swedish indie rock duo I Break Horses have certainly set out their stall. The pair, better known as Maria Linden and Fredrik Balck, have - among other things - hit the road to support both M83 and Sigur Ros in the years between then and now. Indicative of their incredibly textured and subtly all-consuming approach to soundscapes, while this release comprises two remixes it still feels every bit a Horses outing.

There's just so much timbre to get to grips with. 'Death Engine' belongs in a twisted math rock dream, as grungy and rough as it is epic and emotional, if you look beneath the immediate discordance and distortion. Mythologen's take on 'Turn' is a cleaner second act, taking the pace down a notch and removing chaos, leaving only calm and serene harmonies of real beauty behind.

Review: Midlake fans can finally rejoice as the band's long-awaited new record, For the Sake of Bethel Woods, has land don Bella Union. It comes as a deluxe package with white, heavyweight vinyl and an accompanying European tour this spring. As with many albums of these last few years, this is one consumed by ideas of loss, isolation, hope and community. It is the group's fifth LP and first in almost a decade after 2013's Aniphon and is full of immersive warmth and musical mystery. They seem to have a fresh intent and purpose in these tracks which boast psychedelic space-rock and sticky guitars. lush harmonies and plenty of light and dark contrasts.

Review: A well-deserved gold vinyl reissue is given to Midlake here. Despite their relative obscurity, it's testament to them being a seminal band that this album's lead song, 'Roscoe', landed a top 100 greatest songs spot in Rolling Stone; even more so that the album was later described as paving the way for the future success of Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Beirut by Cocteau Twins' Simon Raymonde. A happy US precursor to what BC,NR are doing now, blended with post-punk, folk and emo, choice bits like 'Bandits' and 'Van Occupanther' still sound fantastic in their stereoized guitars, emotive 6/8 strums and melancholy themes from Tim Smith. Cop this gold plated reissue while you still can.

Review: Welcome, Ladies and Gentleman, to the wonderful world of Midlake, a place of unique beauty quite unlike anywhere you've ever been. Midlake formed in the small, quirky town of Denton, Texas. These five gifted and diligent musicians spent their late teens and early 20s forging their singular musical vision and soon enough they were discovered by Simon Raymonde, head of Bella Union Records, who fell deeply in love with the band and their dazzling music. "Roscoe" is the second single from Midlake's second album, "The Trials of Van Occupanther".

Review: 'Head Home' is the third single from Midlake's stunning second album, 'The Trials of Van Occupanther'. It will be available only on limited edition coloured 7", making it a must-own for any Midlake fan. 'Head Home' is perhaps the most classic rock track on the album, drawing obvious influences from bands such as Fleetwood Mac, whilst also retaining an undeniable Midlake feel. To top it off, the B-side of this record is a spectacular acoustic version of the album's lead track and previous single, 'Roscoe'. The past few months have seen Midlake become one of the most talked-about and critically-acclaimed acts of 2006. The band's rapidly-growing fanbase includes the likes of the Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, Jason Lyttle, Beck, Paul Weller and Jason Lee... 'The Trials of Van Occupanther' was released in June to a chorus of fantastic reviews: "This unimpeachable record is a part-pastoral, part-rock curiosity, with trace elements of Neil Young, America and Grandaddy. All exquisitely sung and played, and as with Sufjan Stevens' 'Illinoise', we're dealing with an invigorating, many-faceted work of diverse instrumentation and durability." MOJO - 4 Stars "The full cream harmonies recall CSNY in their early pomp... Much of is sounds like the spiritual cousin on Neil Young's 'After The Goldrush' and 'Harvest', sharing the same back-to-nature rusticity" Uncut - 4 Stars "'The Trials Of Van Occupanther' is a bona fide classic, a record that unites Mercury Rev-styled psyche eccentricity with smooth rock'n'soul. Out on the ever-inspiring Bella Union, its very existence makes the world seem a better place". NME

Review: There's a truly undefinable yet wholly recognizable mood to the music of Washington DC native Marissa Nadler, and in places it's hard to not feel the ghost of Roy Orbison's vibrato coming through the vocals sung here. There's some beautiful duets and overdubbing to be heard from Angel Olsen on an album that Nadler co-produced with song-writer Lawrence Rothman and Justin Raisen, the latter known for his production work with the likes of Santigold, Yves Tumor and Kim Gordon to name a few. It's nigh on impossible to not be cast away by wistful forlornness of the LP and its titles alone express the deepest of melancholy blue in Nadler's music, with none more effectively haunting than the album's title track: "For My Crimes". Be brave.

Review: Given that all four members of Piroshka have serious musical heritage stretching back to the late '80s and early '90s (famously the line-up boasts former members of Lush, Elastica, Moose and Modern English), it's perhaps unsurprising that their trademark sound taps into these roots. Love Drops & Gathers, their sophomore set, evolves this collective style further, adding notable nods towards shoegaze and shimmering electronica amongst the rugged Britpop grooves and classic indie-rock song structures. The result is a warm, drowsy and more musically adventurous affair that still puts hummable melodies and sing-along choruses at the heart of the action.

Review: Home to artists like The Flaming Lips, Father John Misty and Fleet Foxes, the much adored Bella Union label out of London present the debut album of Piroshka. Not to be confused with a much loved Polish delicacy (actually taking inspiration from Little Red Riding Hood), the group is made up of an amalgamation of artists lifted from bands like Lush, Moose, Elastica and Modern English. Opening with the all too familiar squeal of an amp's feedback, an all too groovy backbeat ensues to make any elderly rocker at the back of the scout hall get up and dance. The album casually surfs through a bevy of styles, from weird cosmic '80s synth action that begins in "Never Enough" to the melancholic wild west themes in "What's Next", to even classical, trip hoppy affairs in "Heartbeats". A suitably dreamy debut from Bella Union's next super group.

Review: You don't have to spend long looking at the cover art for Plantoid's Terrapath to have a stab at guessing what the record is all about. The oil painting-style image is at once retro and futuristic, invoking thoughts of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds and John Wyndham's Day of the Triffids, among other classic science fiction works. We couldn't ask for a more apt visualisation of the record itself. Terms like 'prog rock jazz' may not be particularly flattering today, but here Plantoid prove there's plenty of life left in the (sub) genre yet, especially when you throw funk, soul, and subtle hints of downbeat into the mix. Terrapath is at times fragile and gentile, in other moments rowdy and brash, and it never, ever feels like it could do with seven or eight minutes shaving off a track. A wonderfully conceived collection you'll be coming back to again, and again.

Review: Bella Union's newest faces are Norwegian group Pom Poko whose best and most steely expressions in press shots go some length to reveal the youthful angst and playfulness of their multicoloured, poppy punk sound. That said, there's glimpses of Mars Volta instrumentation in tracks like "Milk Trust", and "If U Want Me 2 Stay" does a good job at building a wall of noise like My Bloody Valentine would, but really the group's true aesthetic lies within an indie mould intrinsic to Scandinavia while still thrashing about the place with a melee of high energy guitars, drums and rebellious vocals (maybe even some bagpipes in "My Blood") to deliver a album your parents might not get, but the headbands and spray jackets waiting at the door a generation after the Modular wave will.

Review: Although his solo work has not been as celebrated as those of some of his Radiohead bandmates - most notably Thom Yorke - Philip Selway has nevertheless delivered a handful of excellent albums since making his debut in 2010. A songwriter since his youth, Selway often offers up far more 'traditional' material than one might expect (his debut, for example, was heavily acoustic). Interestingly, he doesn't drum on 'Strange Dance', his first album since 2017; instead, he sings, produces (Valentina Magaletti takes the sticks instead), and conjures a distinctive, effects-laden sound that he has described in interviews as "a Carole King record if she asked Daphne Oram to produce it". In effect, that means glassy-eyed vocals, prominent drums, guitar, bass and strings aplenty. It's an alluring combination.

The chants and music of Ethiopian Sufi groups feature prominently in "Mummer Love", alongside atmospheric field recordings (including some made by the group of the tree Rimbaud once sat under writing his poems), groovy new electronic instrumentation, fuzzy guitars, drowsy ambient chords and stylish interpretations of Rimbaud's poems by Patti Smith.

Review: It's hard not to feel that the first time you heard Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space it was a lightbulb moment - one of those life, or at least music-affirming experiences that's hard to come back from. Not the first Spiritualized album, but certainly the most critically acclaimed at the time, and arguably still to this day, it confirmed the Warwickshire band had arrived at the highest level of chart-friendly artistry. That point when a band realise they can do what they want, and it resonates with both niche and mainstream ears. Everything Was Beautiful arrived 25 years later, and emphasised that point. Yes, we're talking about a group that reached full maturity some time ago, rather than a troupe of rising enigmas pushing rock 'n' roll in new directions. Nevertheless, the way in which we are invited back into their world is captivating. Tracks that rouse, inspire, and feel utterly timeless. As a record, this is an exhilarating ride from start to finish, almost seeming to distill all that has come before into one intoxicating brew. Here in a limited Spanish pressing, grab it while you can.

Now they are back with a brand new long player, Everything Was Beautiful, written in lockdown and reflects Jason Spaceman's fondness for insolation. He plays 16 different instruments on the record in 11 different studios and also called upon over 30 musicians and singers for help. The list includes his daughter Poppy, long-time collaborator and friend John Coxon, plus string and brass sections, choirs and finger bells and chimes. It makes for a dense, rich album, but would you expect anything else?

Resultant from band brain J Spaceman walking around an empty 'Roman London' - "full of birdsong and strangeness" - the project that emerged arrives full of melancholy, loss and lyrical silver linings. Backed by Spiritualized's classic 'spacey' sound but full of that unparalleled 2022 production polish, we're stoked for this exclusive version of the album, produced between 11 studios and 30 different musicians, of all things.

Review: While Jason Pierce has always taken surprising turns musically - 2019's luscious, self-recorded space pop gem And Nothing Hurt being a good example - for the most part Spiritualized albums are marked out by the intensity and densely layered nature of his psychedelic, hard-to-pigeonhole musical style. Everything Was Beautiful, Pierce's hotly anticipated new album, mines this rich sonic seam, throwing everything but the kitchen sink (including 16 different instruments, 30 musicians, grandiose orchestration, choirs and his daughter Poppy) into the mix with formidable results. While the quality of Pierce's releases has never really dipped, Everything Was Beautiful does feel like peak Spiritualized - a recapturing of the late '90s form that made Pierce's constantly changing band such a big deal. A genuine triumph.

On their latest album they sound more vital than ever, skirting around a fizzing array of grooves where the human voices and synths speak with equal flair and personality. Craftily sculpted and joyously composed, this is a delightfully modernist twist on the blueprint Cabs helped define all those decades ago. The spirit of progress is alive and well across this beautifully bonkers record - all disco delinquents take note!
