Review: Kristin Hersh and Bernard George are best known for their work in iconic US indie stalwarts Throwing Muses, but outside of that project and their solo endeavours they also have a long-running project called 50 Foot Wave. Originally emerging around the turn of the century, the band has been quiet for some time but now returns with their first album in 18 years, Black Pearl. From the heavy riffs of 'Staring Into The Sun' to the spidery guitar and baroque qualities of 'Hog Child', it's a masterful album which explores new paths for Hersh and George alike, ably assisted by drummer Rob Ahlers.

Review: There's a point in Sit, Sleep where you don't know whether to sit up and listen intently, or close your eyes and enjoy some time on the brink of slumber, that ambient place where realities and fantasies seem to drift into one another. Bardo Pond's lasting legacy will always be the kind of tracks that seem to blur lines between worlds, both stylistically and in terms of form. At times abstract, in other moments the perfectly formed solid wall of white noise.

This, Volume 1, was the first in a series of eight EPs that span 18 years, starting out in 2000 and then opting for one in the saga each year through to 2005. At which point things got much more sporadic. Timelines aside, the tracks here are a great introduction both the outfit themselves and the Volume concept - basically experimental improvisation that pulls you between acid rock, noise, shoegaze, and space.

Review: It's a strange magic that's driven Bardo Pond in their quarter century as a band, yet it's one that effortlessly separates them from any other band operating in similar shoegaze, drone or psychedelic worlds - the drifting, languorous soundscapes, jammed-out abstractions and Neil Young-style guitar workouts of 'Under The Pines' coalesce into a glorious soundworld of trippy rapture and trance-inducing transcendence, steered by Isobel Sollenberger's radiant and reflective voice. One might argue that Bardo Pond have a certain style they've rarely deviated from in their life, yet 'Under The Pines' is as vivid a transmission as we've yet received from this otherworldly institution.

Review: Bardo Pond's extensive archive recordings series opens up once again with Volume 9, an incisive journey into their hypnotic sound. Recorded in the early 2000s, this one's a heady mix of acoustic ambience and menacing distortion. Infamous purveyors of longform stoner rock, Bardo Pond embrace their sludgestorms with graceful nods to Hawkwind, Earth and My Bloody Valentine. For anyone uninitiated with the band's tranquilizing sound, Volume 9 leans into their mesmeric practise with reckless abandon. Featuring two tracks recorded with ace percussionist Michael Zanghi and the seminal two-parter 'War Is Over', a lilting Floydian strum that's invaded - quite literally - by unreconstructed noise. The Zanghi collaboration, meanwhile, is an Eastern-facing mantra with percussive flurries and distorted modal shifts.

Review: First-time vinyl pressing for Bardo Pond's 'Volume 3', one of the many self-released CDs in the 'Volumes' series from the Pennsylvanian psych-rock-gazers, first released in 2002 after a period of flirtation with Matador Records. The six tracks on this EP are the product of various rare, raw jam sessions, many of which last over 15 minutes long, after the period in which the band defected from songwriting and went full drone. Save for the lucky few that got to cop the CD when it first came out (in all likelihood, it circulated among the most rabid of fans and confidantes only), most of us haven't heard the album in its entirety until now.

Review: Focus On Nature is the new studio album from celebrated post-psyche singer songwriter Nick Saloman and his band The Bevis Frond. Seventy-five minutes of glorious melodies that span 60s psych, English folk, Seattle art-punks The Wipers, the buzzsaw pop of Dinosaur Jr and Hendrix-esque explorations. There's always an element of playful Englishness to their music. Heavily influencing the likes of The Lemonheads, Teenage Fanclub, Elliot Smith, Pavement and Dinosaur Jr, the cult icons have produced another off-kilter mix of melodic piano-led melancholy, acoustic ruminations, scratchy garage rock with a punky edge and full-on guitar histrionics.

In the past we've seen them touch on punk and dive headfirst into psychobilly, but on 'Sing In A World That's Falling Apart' they move to pastures new - literally - by embracing country and western.

Don't expect this to be packed with slide guitars and lamentations on D.I.V.O.R.C.E., though. Instead we're talking bourbon-soaked, thigh-slapping, rowdy and raucous songs to soundtrack any self-respecting barroom brawl. There are shades of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan at play here, and this is no cheap pastiche - all three of those greats, and more, would be proud to call this one their own.

Review: Blank Realm arrived initially from Brisbane, the work of three siblings who found their metier in noise and the avant-garde, yet after releasing material on renowned underground labels like Siltbreeze and Not Not Fun soon also found they possessed both a knack for a sparkling pop hook and a soft spot for '80s ennui. Having made their name with boisterous live shows, 'Illegals In Heaven' near-incredibly marks the first time they've ventured into a bona fide recording studio, and the results are their most concise and arresting work to date - upbeat yet melancholic, tuneful yet abrasive, these bittersweet gems are sure to find fans amongst those for who find their personal poison in the likes of Wire, The Gun Club and The Cure alike.

Review: The world lost one of the all-time great indie songwriters when The Chills leader Martin Phillipps passed away in 2024. The New Zealand jangle-pop pioneers started out in the 80s, writing memorable melodies and beautiful harmonies and went on to have a career lasting more than 40 years. They helped coin the 'Dunedin sound' - a catch-all name given to the indie scene in the university city of Dunedin in the remote east coast of the South Island of New Zealand - a place that punched way above its weight in terms of cultural relevance and great indie music for its size. This release comes as a reminder of their greatness and includes a whopping 20 songs (it's a double LP and on gold(!)) from the band's early years revisited. As is often the case with tireless creatives, there's a vault of unfinished work that often never gets completed. Philipps dedicated moments at the end part of his life to fleshing out these song ideas, resulting in their completion nearly 40 years after they were written. 'If This World Was Made For Me' is the first song to be unearthed from this collection and is as beautiful as indie psychedelia gets with Philipps' vocal harmonies transcendent in their splendour.

Review: Jangle pop pioneers The Chills came out of the Dunedin scene in the 80s, which grew to become one of the most important movements in indie rock history, largely thanks to the output on the Flying Nun label, which The Chills were apart of when they first started out. The Chills had their own Brian Wilson in Martin Phillipps: a prolific songwriter with an ear for melody and harmony up there with the best that's ever been. Sadly, he passed away in 2024, but this album is released as a reminder of just how good he was and it's a timely balm for the grief felt within the indie rock community. The songs here come from work Phillipps did shortly before he died, where he opened his vault of unfinished songs that he started early in the Chills' career and fleshed them out to finally release them all these years later. We can assure you; it's been well worth the wait. Sublime stuff.

Review: The Chills' 1987 debut Brave Words sees a double-LP remaster, including a disc of unheard extras. Renowned as totemic purveyors of New Zealand's finest jangle pop, The Chills retained a large cult following in their homeland of Dunedin - not least as some of the earliest proponents of what was then known as the Dunedin sound, which later went on to influence some of indie rock's best-known stars including R.E.M., Yo La Tengo and Pavement and going on to contribute to the formation of the indie rock genre as a whole. Brave Worlds brings jubilant cynicism to the sound, deliberating on the contradictions of modern life, while building on the sonic palette already laid down over their various EPs and live shows. Remixed and remastered under the supervision of Martin Phillipps, this special release will feature brand new and reimagined artwork by Martin.

Review: The Fire Records/Various Production partnership in dark mash-up continues on from VP's dark-as-a-haunted-cave remix of Gerry Mitchell
and Little Sparta's 'Feasting On My Heart', and their remix of labelmates, Puerto Muerto's 'Boy' ("shocking in its scope"- Boomkat).
This time around is more upbeat (relatively speaking), as evident in Bonesy's more playfully disturbing cover. Sonically, it's nasty rather than
dark; it's a stormer of electro-popping stomp warped by Dave Cloud's characteristic breathy and gravelly vocals and attitude.
The lo-fi original on the b-side (from last year's 'Napoleon Of Temperance') is a distorted disco classic karaoked by a loose-screw genius,
and is a favourite of Stool Pigeon DJs.

Review: Come are not that widely talked about in the field of mid 90s alt rock from the US, but their sound was truly unique and they deserve all the fresh appreciation they can get. Near Life Experience was their third album, released in 1996 after the original rhythm section had departed. The stand ins drew from bands like The Jesus Lizard and Tortoise, so already you know the vague area the sound resides in. Funnelling a slight country twang into noise rock's errant tendencies and with Thalia Zedek's hard-bitten vocal delivery up front, it's a genuinely brilliant album which now returns via Fire on pink vinyl.

Review: Re-imagining and reconstructing Philippe Sarde's original source material, Swedish trio Death & Vanilla have retrospectively scored Roman Polanski's cult 1976 thriller 'The Tenant'. Recorded from a live performance at the Cinemascore Film Festival, the repeated hypnotic phrases, poised vibraphone and organ parts and dissonant soundscapes perfectly match the film's themes of paranoia and deluded hallucination. The band's style - akin to Broadcast & Radiophonic Workshop - is cleverly deceptive in sounding simultaneously new and old. It pulls from modernity by dipping into electronica and mesmeric trip-hop style phrases, while the group's instrumentation and respect for the source material makes their music sound of the film's time. Most importantly, this rendition of 'The Tenant' is one of those uncommon gems of a soundtrack whose strength of musicianship lets it stand up on its own as a piece of music just as much as it does an accompaniment to its film counterpart.

Review: Are you a dreamer? Swedish band Death & Vanilla ask across eight contemporary takes on German Krautrock, French Ye-ye pop and 60s psychedelic. Vocals are breezy, their moog synths fat, with guitars drenched in reverb and delay. At times the band's sound aligns with other kindred groups like Goldfrapp, Portishead or even Bjork (with "Vespertine") through their subtle take on downbeat, alternative '90s pop and this is heard most in "Let's Never Leave Here". "Are You A Dreamer?" delivers the Malmo trio a fifth studio LP following last year's conceptual soundtrack for stage and screen entitled "A Score For Roman Polanski's The Tenant", and this time around, our highlights include the spacey western riffs of "Eye Bath" and the ever-so dreamy "The Hum". Esoteric modern pop for sure.

As rich in celestial arrangement and atmosphere as it is in melody and instrumentation, 'To Where The Wild Things Are' is possessed of a sepia-tinted melancholy and a narcotic charm. A better display of sonic super-8 B-movie radiance would be hard to find in 2015.

Review: Sweden's vintage gear loving Death and Vanilla continue to defy expectation with their singular take on pop music as they present this new album Flicker. It's a record that holds a mirror up to these difficult modern times in which awe live and mixes up an array of different sonic foundations to do so. They are dub reggae, motorik Can kicks, Philip Glass's minimalism and dreamy but dark pop spins from The Cure. Add in elements of Spiritualized and Talking Heads with a hint of Brian Eno and you chose have a good idea of what to expect here.

Review: Swedish trio Death And Vanilla continue to carve out their atmospheric niche, blending elements of post-ambient electronica and spectral folk to craft something distinctly unsettling. Their latest foray into live scoring breathes new life into the eerie, folkloric narrative of a 1968 ghost story. As they shift seamlessly between stuttering tape loops, minimalist drum machines, and haunting choral effects, they create a tension that pulls the listener deeper into the supernatural. Tracks like 'Supernatural Breakfast' are pulsing with an old-school, Carpenter-esque vibe, while others, like 'Nightmares', evoke a sense of unease with their swirling winds and spectral sounds. The band's ability to inhabit these otherworldly spaces is a nod to their growing mastery of atmosphere, a skill that's increasingly becoming their signature. Even as they explore the boundary between the familiar and the uncanny, Death And Vanilla remind us that their sound can be as inviting as it is unnervingly strange.

Review: The Dream Syndicate's 1986 album has been absent from CD for almost a quarter of a century. Now, after 24 years in the wilderness, it gets reissued on triple pack complete with a hard back book sleeve. This is delightful pop from Steve Wynn who can be both moody ad intense and more carefree and abstract. Plenty of his bets work is contained in here and all have been perfectly remastered with 51 songs in, including a previously unreleased live album. It has a higher energy than the rets of the songs that wasn't captured in studio takes and the alternate version on disc three also offer a fresh raw sound.

Review: Earth's live performance at KOKO in 2016 captures the Olympia-formed experimental drone crew's evolving sound in its most immersive form. The trioiDylan Carlson, Jodie Cox and Adrienne Davisioffers a slow-burn journey through layers of doom, drone and minimalist textures that feel as weighty as they do precise. The set begins with a familiar depth, the reverberating basslines and crushing guitar tones building a space of deliberate tension. Tracks like 'Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull' unfurl with a vast and spatial quality, while 'Even Hell Has Its Heroes' crawls along in thick, oppressive layers. What's striking is the restraint: Earth never rushes; each note, each pause, is deliberate, serving as a meditation on the slow, heavy force of sound. The minimalist approach feels almost tactile in its quiet moments, as if the silence itself is as profound as the noise. This live offering underlines their mastery of creating music that moves beyond noise, into a deeper exploration of space, sound, and feeling.

Review: To complement their exhaustive and really rather pretty triple vinyl/double CD ESG retrospective, Fire Records have also pressed up this dinky 45 containing one of the iconic NYC punk funk sister act's most ubiquitous tracks. If you've not bleached sweat to "Dance" in a dark basement somewhere in the early hours of the morning on a weekend then you've not lived (it's true we just checked the How To Live Your Life guide). The raw visceral groove, little more than the bottom heavy bass, rough percussion that can't fail to drop out of time and the distinctive harmonies of the Scroggins sisters, remains a delight nearly thirty years on. This is complemented on the flipside by the equally brilliant Mock & Toof influencing instrumental "Tiny Sticks".

Review: This special The 35th-anniversary reissue of Come Away with ESG celebrates the groundbreaking debut album by the Bronx sisters. It's a proper genre-defying classic that shaped hip-hop, house, and post-punk with its signature minimalist funk. ESG's stripped-down sound is built on raw drumbeats and hypnotic bass lines and defies traditional labels with a more groove-driven, horn and organ-free alternative to funk. Their influence spans decades and has inspires artists across several genres which is why Come Away remains a classic and one that proves that true rhythm lies in the spaces between the beats.

As any funk lovers will know, Come Away with ESG is the Bronx sisters' pioneering debut album and a genre-blurring masterpiece that is accepted to have very much helped shape hip-hop, house, and post-punk with its signature minimalist funk. ESG's raw, stripped-down approach offered a fresh alternative to traditional funk in that it was free of horns and heavy organ. Decades later, their influence remains undeniable and has inspired countless artists across multiple genres. This record is all the proof you need that the magic of rhythm isn't just in the beats-it thrives in the spaces between them.

Review: Faten Kanaan's fifth LP Afterpoem once again brings smudgy and bittersweet sounds to playful tracks that rework coldwave and resets it in intriguing new forms. It is another deep and poignant album from an artist who by now excels at exactly that. The lead single 'Ard Diar' landed back in November and is named after the courtyard in traditional Damascene houses. It reflects on the relationship between architecture and memory with haunting pads and minimalism. "It's these small moments, often taken for granted, that echo the deepest," says the artist of the inspiration for what is a very personal and moving album.

A collection of songs from throughout Foster's life as a songwriter, along with poems by Rudyard Kipling and James Joyce set to music, these performances - recorded stripped down and live - manage an enviable elegance in such settings, a plaintive and exquisite masterclass in both ancient and modern.

Review: Josephine Foster and collaborator Daniel Blumberg produced Domestic Sphere as "an altar cloth of songs stitched together as liturgical music for a restless homestead." Foster plays only on the acoustic guitar and does wondrous things with her voice and a wide range of frequencies. She conveys true feelings with every note and it adds up to a rather transcendent experience. Field recordings reflecting daily life in a Spanish village are mixed into the music as is a cameo from her late great-grandmother. The melodies on this one will stay with you long after the record finishes playing.

Never a dull moment, in this lifetime he has flirted with flamenco, adventured into Americana and gone for it with gospel choirs. The result is a back catalogue packed with great ideas, and inspiration for more great ideas. Enter Giant Sand, where artist dons disguise and revisits his old classics to make them fresh and different. Here Gelb, or Giant Sand, takes on the second Gelb album, "The Ballad Of Thin Line Man". First released in 1986, when New Hollywood was kicking Reaganite attitudes to the curb in favour of modern high plains drifters influenced by the preceding LSD decades, that same ethic is here, only louder and more urgent. A strange but familiar and abstract Americana, with roughness turned up to 11.

Review: There is more than an echo of Kate Bush in the music of Norfolk's Lucy Gooch. Also inspired by the early technicolour films of Powell and Pressburger, she layers up walls of sound that are ethereal and subliminal. Big chords, sweeping pads and synthesisers and vocals all carefully arranged to make for rich music that leaves you breathless. This is an album for escape, with yearning moods and trace elements of the aforementioned film's scores and narratives carefully woven in. The ethereal sound and glowing melodies of 'Chained To A Woman' is the standout for us.

Review: It takes about a minute to fall head over heels for 'My Lights Kiss Your Thoughts Every Moment', the first track on Rushing, a collection of compelling and utterly spellbinding work by Bristol-based singer, sonic artist, and general visionary Lucy Gooch. A sublime concoction of ambient refrains, deep, moody, muffled keys, and perhaps the most spectacular voice we have heard this decade, creating something serene but powerfully emotive.

It sets a real precedent, but what follows proves every bit the match. The title track looks to focus more on production trickery, taking those sweet vocal tones and developing them into loops and layers while still ensuring the original words take centre stage, a backdrop of strings adding the sense of build and expectation. Throw in the almost church-like feeling of 'Sun', cosmic rays of melody that make up 'There Is A Space In Between' and we're sold. Well, we already were.

Review: The Groundhogs' second album, Blues Obituary, released in 1969, marks a significant evolution in their sound, showing the band's ambition to transcend traditional blues. Tony McPhee and his band delve into a fusion of electric British blues and progressive psychedelic rock, resulting in a wonderful sonic journey. The opening track, 'B.D.D.', demonstrates their shift away from conventional blues structures with its refined guitar work and smoother melodies. Tracks like 'Daze of the Weak' highlight McPhee's extraordinary guitar work, propelling the music beyond mere blues variations. The album also features a diverse range of influences, from swamp rock in 'Mistreated' to the haunting 'Natchez Burning', reminiscent of classic southern rock bands. The experimental closing track, 'Light Was the Day' evokes their innovative spirit with freeform guitar and improvisational drumming. Blues Obituary is an essential listen that signals the Groundhogs' potential for greatness, as they chart their course into new musical territories. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of blues and psychedelia.

Review: The Groundhogs' debut album, Scratching The Surface, stands as a milestone in the British blues movement of the late 1960s. Released in 1968, this record captures the raw energy of the era, blending blues authenticity with a distinctive edge. Unlike their later works, such as Thank Christ for the Bomb and Split, this album sticks closely to the classic blues format, heavily influenced by the sounds of early Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown. Featuring the original lineupiTony McPhee, Peter Cruickshank, Ken Pustelnik, and harmonica player Steve Ryeithe album has both McPhee's original compositions and Rye's blistering contributions. Rye's 'Early in the Morning' and 'You Don't Love Me' are standout tracks, while the reworking of Muddy Waters' 'Still A Fool' is fierce and memorable. Newly remastered, this vinyl reissue restores the album's rootsy, moody blues sound with remarkable clarity.

'Let The Lions Roar' may seem an unusually lairy title for this band, yet it's quite fitting for a collection of songs with just as much life-affirming rock action to offer as wilful eccentricity.

Review: Jad Fair's outfit may be largely thought of for counting Kurt Cobain as a fan or simply for their punk rock spirit and playful naivete, yet forty plus years on from their inception, they're still capable of releasing records that can get in the ring with almost any indie-rock band you care to mention, such is the catchiness and brio of their songs. 'Let The Lions Roar' may seem an unusually lairy title for this band, yet it's quite fitting for a collection of songs with just as much life-affirming rock action to offer as wilful eccentricity.

Review: HTRK's debut album in 2007 proved to be a seminal one for fans of experimental noise. It cooks up impressively abrasive and caustic textures, crashing waves of white noise and sonorous pulses that speak of a future dystopian world. Tense and absorbing throughout, the lo-fi design and elements of post punk, post industrial and post techno makes it a modern analogy of the likes of Throbbing Gristle. 12 years later, the record sounds just as good, and arguably even more prescient in these twitchy times of digital surveillance, social anxieties and worldwide political tensions. It might be bleak, then, but that doesn't mean there is real beauty in this album's disharmony.

The Man Who Stayed In Bed Forever
Your Husband & My Disappointment
Review: With his own brand of sparse and carefully arranged melancholia, David Hurn finally returns after last years "How I Came To Hate My Saviour EP" with a stand-out track off his forthcoming album. Featuring a lush and swirling intro, and almost breaking 6 minutes, "The Man Who Stayed In Bed Forever" brings David's composing to a new maturity.
