Break Down The Walls
Cat: DKR 228. Rel: 08 Jun 23
Abbashantie - "Break Down The Walls" (6:01)
Jerry & Neville - "Abbashantie Rock" (with Wackie's Rhythm Force) (7:13)
Review: Here's a precious reissue of a 12" single by Abbashantie (not to be confused with UK sound system giant Aba Shanti) and Neville & Jerry. Both were Jamaican reggae vocal duos who recorded for Wackie's, a still-going-strong US label and studio founded by Lloyd Barnes aka Wackie's or Bullwackie. The single was originally released in 1980 and features two utter groundshakers: 'Break Down The Walls' by Abbashantie and 'Abbashantie Rock' (with Wackie's Rhythm Force).

Give A Little Love
Cat: ARI 328A. Rel: 19 Jul 24
Aisha - "Give A Little Love" (8:59)
Jah Shaka, Norman Twinkle & Mad Professor - "African Message Dub" (7:34)
Review: Reggae singer, soundsystem heiress and "first lady of dub" Aisha (Pamela Ross) had already made an enduring name for herself by 1997, at which point she was already ten years into her singing career. A veritable blue-blood of soundsystem culture, Aisha had also already released four albums before 'Give A Little Love', which was contrastingly released as a standalone single not intended as a part of any wider record. Notably enough, it was also produced by Mad Professor, whose boxy, whistly production brings a ghostly, wastelain feel to the otherwise lively track; the instrumental version connotes entirely different themes without the lyrics, proving the infatuating effect of Aisha's words and delivery: with her, it becomes the quintessence of lovers' rock; a rousing floor-filler and lyrical impulsion to give over, so to speak, to the virtues of sharing, as opposed to withholding for oneself, love.

Promise Land: Vocals & Version
Frankie Paul - "Serious Time" (3:33)
Joseph Cotton - "Trod In Africa" (3:35)
Prince Malachi - "Worldwide Poverty" (3:36)
Anthony John - "Rise Above" (3:30)
Albert "Alchemist" Thompson - "Promise Land Version" (3:34)
Review: Albert "Alchemist" Thompson's Promise Land comes courtesy of Freestyle Records and has great appearances on the mic from reggae and dancehall greats Frankie Paul, Joseph Cotton, Prince Malachi and Anthony John. It has never before been released and has had a long maturation period over the last 30 years. Albert Thompson was chief engineer at I&I Sound Recording Studio once it left LA and head to Jamaica and he saw work with greats like Dennis Brown, Bunny Wailer and Gregory Isaacs. He laid down these rhythms in 1991 during some downtime and then added the vocals 16 years later in London when working with talented local and touring Jamaican artists.

Ariwa Posse - "Rise & Shine" (with Askala Selassie) (3:26)
Joe Ariwa - "Rise & Shine" (dub) (3:27)
Review: Mad Professor's Aiwa Studios has never struggled with turning out sublime low end excursions in a range of dubby sub-genres. This 7" offers the latest chance to check in with what's going on there courtesy of the in-house Ariwa Posse with Joe Ariwa. This is reportedly one of two releases coming imminently which is great news because it bangs. First up is A-side wobbler 'Rise & Shine' (with Askala Selassie) which has clean digi-dub synths snaking between hissing hi hats and endless amounts of rerun while the silky bass rolls unhindered and the vocals bring aching soul. Joe Ariwa gets to work on a flip side dub that hits different.

Botha Warning

Bionic Singer - "Botha Warning" (3:55)
Jamaazima All Star - "Warning To Botha" (3:31)
Review: 333 UK shed backscattered light on another late 1980s anti-apartheid reggae opus, Bionic Singer's 'Botha Warning'. Salvaged from the formerly seafloor dwelling chest that is the Jamaazima label back catalogue, 'Botha Warning' is a star riddim from the late great Osbert "Madoo" Maddo, who was brought up in East Kingston and as a child attended the legendary Alpha Boys School. Over his career he recorded mainly with Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, and for Winston Riley's famous Techniques label. The Bionic Singer alias came later, after a move to New York from Jamaica and brief hiatus; releasing on the Bronx-based Jamaazima, 'Warning To Botha' is a bloodthirsty send for South Africa's then prime minister P.W. Botha, set to a sturdy bubbler backing - the track indicts his policies as a key cause for the brutal segregation of the period.

Milk & Honey (remastered)

Dennis Brown - "Milk & Honey" (2:45)
Azul - "Bitter Sweet" (3:05)
Jay Glass Dubs - "Milk & Honey" (dub) (5:37)
Review: Dennis Brown serve dup a real roots classic when he penned 'Milk and Honey.' It is a dub that still does damage and so has had a nice fresh reamster for 2022. It's an enduring anthem with plenty of praise for Jah. The prodigal comes with Clive Hunt's original 'Bitter Sweet' dub which he made under his Azul moniker. It's full of echoing synths and head melting pads as well as cavernous bass depths. On the B side, Jay Glass Dubs tackles the original with a warped sense of space and time as he deconstructs contemporary dub into something all new. This is a limited-edition white label vinyl 12" so snap it up fast.

Review: Experience the brilliance of Dennis Brown's late 70s roots vocal cut with this crucial reissue from Joe Gibbs. This new 45rpm features captivating harmonies by the acclaimed USA singer Dhaima, who is a frequent Brown collaborator, and here they combine in superb fashion for a deep roller with buttery vocals. Review: If you are reading this you will already likely know that Dennis Brown is a reggae don. Even amongst his rich and vital catalogue, 'Money In My Pocket' is a quintessential track produced by the legendary Joe Gibbs and backed by The Professionals. This one really captures Brown's smooth vocal delivery and signature soulful style over an effortlessly catchy, rhythmic groove that takes elements of roots reggae and infills with accessible, polished sound. The lyrics focus on struggles and aspirations so resonate on a deeper level and make this one a long-standing and beloved anthem.

Dreadlocks Time
Cat: JGM 7018. Rel: 04 Oct 24
Junior Byles - "Dreadlocks Time" (2:51)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Peel Head" (2:49)
Review: The sound of dreadlocks, should there ever be such a thing in the abstract, is best put forward by Junior Byles, the Versatiles' lead member, backed up by a shuffling riddim produced by Errol Thompson and Joe Gibbs. 'Dreadlocks Time' hears a relick of their 'Ba Ba Boom' beat, and is a heartwarming song about self-care and respect for one's own hair, with lyrics: "don't try to stop dreading/natty dread time is a-here/don't lose your cool/respect the rules..." The music is just as measured in feel, and the version is just as "natty", so to speak; there's a very well-timed acapella moment thrown in with the version mix.

Chazbo Meets Jah93 - "Holy Mountain" (3:43)
Chazbo - "Holy Mountain" (dub) (3:42)
Review: Chazbo and Jah93 are two artists living in Japan who share a passion for dub; producer Chazbo has worked with the likes of Prince Alla, Earl 16 and Kenny Knots, while melodica maestro Jah93 enjoys wide renown for her band Dubdhizm. 'Holy Mountain' hears Chazbo remix one of Jah's original tracks originally composed way back in the day. It's a fresh new take: digi and bleep elements overlay a harmonious yet patient dub backing, with evident extra care to carve out an organic sound. Of course, it wouldn't be the same without Jah93's melodious melodica over Chazbo's efforts, which glides mutedly over both A and dub.

Review: The latest entry in this series from the Dub Suty crew managed to nod to the roots of digital dub and dancehall while also very much looking to the future. It sees the label team up with a producer who lays down the beast while different vocalists step up to add their own twist to the sonics. Von D is the man on the buttons and he crafts a seriously weighty stepper that comes with horns, keys, guitars and of course some alluring bars. Reggae singers Chukki Starr, Chezidek, and Jah Mason all come correct with this positive, uplifting messages of unity.

Review: Four weighty units of dubwise reggae come courtesy of Countryman, West Finga and Jeh. The star-sider, 'This Generation' by Countryman, is a banging enough contribution to this latest EP for Hornin' to receive several versions. A foreboding ballad for a generation beset by economic problems - "this generation got nothing to lose... there's gonna be problems!" - the veteran singer and soundsystem operator is adept as ever in delivering a high-consciousness message. Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Golden River" (3:33)
Review: Whether or not it is a coincidence that we are fast approaching 420 and ever more weed-related 7"s are dropping we do not know, but nor do we care. Culture's 'Callie Weed Song' is going to bang whatever day of the year you drop it, so long as you play it loud. It's got carefree keys and ganglier guitars accompanying the traditional reggae groove and some super stoned-sounding vocal musings on top. Joe Gibbs & The Professionals then appear on the flip with something just as summer, laid back and seductive in the form of the great 'Golden River.' Let's not get into what that title may or may not refer to.

'So Much Confusion' is a beautifully downbeat piece with the bluesy melancholic vocals of Judy telling of a world troubled by confusion and suffering. There are classic guitars and drums on title track "Hold A Meditation" but the broad, smeared synth bass adds some contemporary cool that makes it suitable for a range of different settings. Born in Clarendon, Jamaica, Jackson (also known as Esso Jaxxon or Castro Pink) eventually moved to the United States in 1973 and later settled in Canada. There, he connected with key figures in the reggae scene, including Oswald Creary of Half Moon Studio, Doug of Comfort Sounds, and the legendary Jackie Mittoo. The EP kicks off with the title track, 'Row Fisherman Row', a melodic roots rock jam enriched with smooth dub elements. The warm, laid-back groove sets the tone, followed by 'Blackheart Man', where a deep, wobbling bass carries a more traditional reggae sound. On Side-2, 'Long Long Time' is a spiritual, echo-heavy vibe that exudes class and depth. It is a tune that really will ignite dancefloors with its infectious rhythm and rich reggae vibes and is a rather timeless anthem that showcases Screechy's distinctive vocal style. It blends effortlessly with the track's pulsating bassline and hypnotic beat to embody the essence of Jamaican dancehall culture. On the flip is a signature 'Dubwise' version with even heavier drum rotations and party-pumping energy. Jah Screechy's status as a reggae legend is assured and this is sonic proof.

Rits Riddim Force - "Fletchers Land Dub" (4:53)
Rits Riddim Force - "Fletchers Land Melodica" (feat Ed Cubitt & Kush Kodovi) (4:48)
Review: There is an awful lot of heat packed into this 10" from Room In The Sky, with six new tracks backed by the in-house Room In The Sky Riddim Force on an original called 'Fletchers Land'. Jah Walton aka Joseph Cotton opens up with 'Ganja Man' which pays homage to the weed smokers over fat drums. Goody Gap's 'I Smoke Weed' is another ode to the magical green herb and Michael 'Megahbass' Fletcher then steps up with a more stripped back and percussive dub. Ras Ranger, Ed Cubitt & Kodjovi Kush then feature on a trio of B-side gems.

Righteous Children (3:47)
Righteous Children (Dubpplate mix) (3:41)
Righteous Children (remix) (4:07)
Review: Veteran producer Jah Warrior lay down this heavyweight classic in 1996. It features some seriously crucial bass pressure and drum weight followed by a dubplate mix. 'Righteous Children' still spades future today with its contemporary studio flourishes and clean, serene synths. The bass never lets up, the spaceship hi hats take off repeatedly and the groove always threatens to fall over itself but never does. The Dubplate brings some singing leads to the table and then comes a modern update in the form of a b-side remix. It's a stepping, broken beat and is fresh as you like.

Review: Steve Mosco aka Jah Warrior is a towering figure in UK dub. Active on the soundsystem scene from the early '80s, and producing since at least 1990, he has one of the most distinctive styles in all of UK reggae & bass culture. Jah Warrior has worked with countless reggae greats from Horace Andy to Jah Mason, Peter Broggs to Tena Stelin. For his second outing on ZamZam he dug deep in the vaults for unreleased dubs, heavy as lead. Edition of 500 copies in hand-printed sleeves.

Social Dub (3:55)
Review: Flute player Diggory Kenrick trills the pipes once more on this collab with revered dub producers Jah Warrior and Vibronics. 'Social Justice' may sound like a loud name for a new 7", but this is actually a rather muted instrumental cut, with Kenrick's flute standing in for the righteous wail of the politically mobilized folk. The B, too, provides ample space in which to skank and/or hug a bassbin, all while still allowing at least some room for Kenrick's patented flute to peek through the delay and phase.

Pollution (False Locks version) (3:16)
Review: The latest essential EP from Partial Records takes us back to 1996, mining a now sought-after EP from Jah Warrior and soulful vocalist Naph-Tali. In its original vocal mix form, 'Pollution' sits somewhere between Melodica-laden roots reggae, '90s digi-dub and the up-tempo, hard-edged UK steppers sound, albeit with a distinctive percussive shuffle full of military-band style drum fills. It's rather good all told, with the accompanying dubs - the second of which wasn't released first time round - delivering sizable bass-weight, echoing percussion hits and hazy late-night textures aplenty. The EP-ending 'False Locks' version is a dub style revision two, with Jah Warrior subtly paying tribute to the similarly raw, weight and digital effects-laden productions of fellow UK scene stalwart Mad Professor.

Review: UK do Jah Warrior is, in no uncertain terms, a real stalwart of the sound system scene. he proves why here with some blistering new, seriously dub wise cuts on the Ital Counsellor imprint. 'Not Enough' is icy cold with its steely drum sounds, spoken world snippets from added drama and sci-fi motifs. The dub brings some big horn action in place of the spoken words and then the flip-side has two further dubs. One is a real low end wobbler with wet as you like hits and one is a more heady and sparse affair with the gentle patter of toms keeping you locked.

Blow Out (instrumental) (5:09)
Review: Sound Metaphors sub label Thank You continues to explore lesser known niche records from visionary artists of the 80s by revisiting this single from Jah Wobble. 'Blow Out' is a shoe-in for any Balearic set worth its salt, pairing boxy drum machine rhythms with wistful keys and some blue-eyed soul vocal turns for a meandering ride through prime mid-decade sonic territory. Bleepy where it counts, just a little dubby around the edges and smooth up top, it's a refined, long form cut which sounds great with a modern remaster. Backed with the instrumental version on the flip, it's a no-brainer for diggers who might have balked at paying top whack for an original 85 edition.

Ulterior Dub (feat Jah Rej) (4:14)
Review: The esteemed Jah Works Records was founded by Jah Rej (AKA D. Forte) back in 1989 in the UK, so has a rich heritage when it comes to dub and its spin-offs. This fresh new slice of 7" roots comes from Amsterdam where it was written, recorded and mixed with vocalist Rapha Pico. The fleshy, rolling rhythms have been produced by Jah Rej and form a lush bed from which languorous horns and snaking synths all emanate. The longing in the vocal and gentle tinkle on the keys finishes this one nicely. On the flip is a slower, heavier and headier dub.

WW Dub (4:23)
Review: Standby for a proper cosmic trip on this brilliant digital dub delight from Planet Rescue. It features two tracks by Brussels-based trio Virginia Genta, David Vanzan and Ernesto Gonzalez who have run through a world of trippy effects. Out the other side come these more spaced-out versions of their sound under the name Jahder. "Bagigi Dub" is a rickety, sci-fi dub with lumpen drums and watery chords that melt you over and over again. Loping bass, delays that disappear to an infinite horizon and gentle organ chords characterise the deep cut b-side.

Review: Jahlin was not only a talented singer and songwriter but was also someone who made music with a strong message. He got his education in Canada after moving there in 1975 following his younger days in amid and after booming a welder - which seems a popular first career choice for eventual reggae stars as Bob Marley took a similar path - he pursued his musical career. His 'Roots Reality' is as the title suggests a roots reggae song from the Roots Reality label in 1983. It has a positive vibe and the rather rare addition of a violin which is not so often heard in reggae tunes.

Review: It's time for our weekly dose of digidub. This one comes courtesy of Turtle Isle, a clandestine affair whose MO is to deliver quality, crunchy dub cuts, and nothing more. These two new bits from digidub pioneer Jahtari (Jan Gleichmar) are fittingly lo-fi and 8-bit, with every sound from kick womp to piano trill buried beneath a staunch bitcrush. Unusually, on this EP, space, rather than oppressive bass, is the place; 'Loose In Space' eschews overwrought low end to emphasise the kick drum, resulting in a stomping rather than system-engulfing mood. Dryness prevails on the B, 'The Stars My Destination', lending dub a good dose of space-funk and slappy bit clap; treating the void with sense of humour it needs.

Review: Korean German mystic mister JahYu returns to his own label Tripedal Cow. Teaming up with Ras Tinny, it's the strongest message of our time as they directly call out one of the most loathsome of UK politicians, citing the state of urgency across the world. The original and Version are deep digi dub excursions marinated in spirituality and space while remixes from Alpha & Omega and the currently unavoidable Akcept rattle with weight as they direct themselves square at the dance. Movement is the message.

Review: This 1968 rocksteady classic by The Jamaicans is a rare gem from Duke Reid's Treasure Isle archives. It now finally sees the light of day once more and centres the smooth harmonies and uplifting melodies which define this timeless track and capture the golden era of Jamaican music. On the flip side, Errol Brown's mid-70s rendition of 'Many Questions' is just as good. It delivers a deep, soulful take with his signature production finesse making it another worthy addition to your box of red-hot reggae 7"s.
