Every Knee (5:30)
General (3:24)
Love Up (5:43)
Shaky Girl (3:23)
Review: Tabou 1 is on a roll right now and their latest offering features reggae icon Johnny Clarke teaming up with the legendary rhythm duo Sly & Robbie. 'Every Knee' is an archetypal roots reggae anthem that has everything you want in a tune. It demands to be played loud and proud and blends Clarke's soulful, spiritual vocals with Sly & Robbie's masterful bass and drum foundation. The rest of the tracks here also have deep grooves and heartfelt lyrics that resonate with themes of devotion and unity and are enhanced by the signature dub-infused production.

Leggo Violence (3:34)
Leggo Violence (version) (3:03)
Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Imitation Love (reissue)
Cat: WE 348. Rel: 16 Nov 23
Mellow Rose - "Imitation Love" (7:30)
Seargent Pepper - "Dub & Rub Ina Imitation Way" (7:44)
Review: Mellow Rose and Seargent Pepper's 'Imitation Love' proved a big-hitting reggae 45rpm when it first dropped and so now it has been reissued on this sweet, limited edition red vinyl 12". It first came on Studio 16 back in August of last year and is already worth a pretty penny on second hand markets. The A-side is a super sweet lover's rock sound with falsetto vocals up top, acoustic guitars and fleshy low ends sinking you into a romantic rhythm. On the flip, Seargent Pepper gets to work on 'Dub And Rub Ina Imitation Way' which is more sci-fi and futuristic in its sound designs, all with a hazy and stoner edge.

Lady Lady

Lady Lady (3:38)
Loving Kind (3:58)
Review: This new 7" from the Far East is part of the Neville King Lovers Rock Revisited series. It's as smooth and heartfelt as roots reggae gets with One Blood and Simplicity really tapping into a loved-up vibe. 'Lady Lady' has meandering basslines and lazy horns unfurling next to the buttery sweet and tender vocals which muse on a dream girl. On the B-side is 'Loving Kind', a more traditional dub with tropical island vibes, subtle steel drums and this time a female vocal delivering a carefree lament.

Slimmah Sound - "Melody Of Light" (4:01)
Slimmah Sound - "Melody Of Light" (dub) (3:59)
Review: Prince Chamba joins forces for a superb new roots cut here with Slimmah Sound and Ital Horns. Their 'Secret Light' is a smoky and seductive sound with wobbling low ends and impassioned vocals delivered with a heart-aching twist as the melanotic horns fly up top and rousing chords add some hope. Slimmah Sound & Ital Horns then add their own heavily reverbed dub version and Slimmah Sound offers 'Melody Of Light' which is full of hypnotic harmonica leads. A second dub version once again reworks it into a stoner's delight that will sink you deep into the sofa.

Words Of My Mouth

Roberto Sanchez - "Words Of My Mouth" (3:24)
Message - "Meditation Of My Dub" (3:24)
Review: Spanish label Base Lee Music has tapped up hometown hero Roberto Sanchez for this great new rockers roots single. 'Words Of My Mouth' really has it all - the smooth flowing bassline that undulates and rumbles with cavernous warmth, the acoustic guitar plucks up top to hint at the old school reggae sound and a vocal that is pure and soulful. The Message band come through with a dub version on the flip that layers in tons of echo and reverb and gets those snaking hi-hats hissing as they melt away to nothing.

Unlisted Fanatic - "Poorman" (dub) (3:49)
Review: Seafront International is "honoured" to unveil a poignant tribute to the late, great Sandeeno, who left us far too soon. In that regard, and with the legacy he leaves, he joins the ranks of many other reggae legends. This long-awaited release originates from a recording session a decade ago at Backyard Studio UK, and since then it has lay patiently awaiting completion. Renowned Belgian producer Martin De Ronne, also known as Unlisted Fanatic, has impeccably handled production and mixing duties. He levels up the track with the soulful embellishments of Moonshine Horns and guitar accents courtesy of Kingston Echo.

Promised Land (Binghi mix) (3:38)
Promised Dub (Stepper mix) (3:41)
Review: Shades of Black is producer Paul Fox. He is based in the UK and makes roots, reggae and dub with a global fee. It has been that way since he debuted in 1992 and in the ensuing hears has worked with the likes of Nick Manasseh, Robert Tribulation, Michael Rose, Alpha and Omega and many more. Here he is dropping one of a couple of new tunes on the Africa Mae Do Leao label out of Brazil. 'Promised Land' (Binghi Mix) is super slow dub with Indian melodic references. 'Promised Dub' (Stepper Mix) is heavier and darker and more for the club.

Conspiracy (dub) (3:52)
Review: The excellent and brilliantly consistent Shades of Black brings together many Black musical genres and messages on this new 7" for the Africa Mae Do Leao label out of Brazil. It is dub with a global twist - the dig-dub low ends paired with mystic synth leads, organic percussion and echoing hits. Vocals speak with conscious messages about being the enemy, fighting back and plenty more. If you prefer it more direct then check out the dub on the flip which has more rich melodies that ring out above the tight rhythms.

Since then it has focussed on local talent from dancehall, lovers rock and roots worlds and is influenced by London's 70s sound system culture and icons like Jah Shaka, Sir Coxsone and Fatman, He is known, as a producer, for integrating a hardcore frequency into his music that reflects a blend of digital innovation and traditional reggae sounds and that is evidence here on a limited edition new 7" with Ras Sherby.

The Sherlock Horns - "Elementary, My Dear Dubstoned" (4:36)
Variedub - "Elementary, My Dear Dub" (4:36)
Review: This crucial dub drop comes with a powerful roots track that invites you to enjoy an incredible collaboration with The Sherlock Holmes, one of the most dynamic horn sections in the sound system scene. Produced to perfection by Variedub, the track blends rhythmic warmth with musical strength. Side A delivers an uplifting brass melody with a lively dialogue between trombone and sax and is complemented by dub moments and melodica phrases, all built around a One Drop rhythm. On Side B, the Dub version unfolds with rich reverb and delay effects that embody Variedub's signature style.

Dream (version part III) (4:22)
Review: Bim Sherman and Sound Iration came together for this one in 1989 on WAU! Mr. Modo Recordings. Since then it has become a cult classic that will cost a few quid on the second-hand market. But it's not easy to find and so now comes a reissue by Partial. It features two of the three tunes that were on the original with identical artwork. In original form, 'Dream' is a blissed-out bit of sun-kissed electronic reggae. The drums are crisp, Bim's vocals are clean and the organ chords suck you in deep. 'Dream' (version part 3) is a subtle rework that brings out different leads.

Review: King Shiloh is back with more heavy and modern dub sounds from a range of talents who all add their own spin to a couple of heavy rhythms. Tiger Simeon & Brada Jahziel's 'Rastaman Vibration' gets underway with some bold, brassy horns and natty pianos that make for a full fat sound. Jah Works gets to work on the mixing desk and dubs it out to perfection while Lavosti brings a more modern sounding digital synth sheen and rousing vocal top line to the delightful 'Real Reggae Warrior.' Thinking Friday (dub) (3:22)
Review: This release features two previously unreleased tracks on a beloved 1987 digital riddim. Singing Melody delivers the first, 'Friday Evening', a tune he revisited several times and it brings true dancehall energy. PN the reverse of the 7" is a nice dub that fleshes things out to the max with extra wobble and headiness. Both songs were recorded at Dynamic Sounds during this golden era and are cuts that capture the essence of classic digital dancehall, so are essential additions to the collections of any fans of this period.

Reggae Man (dub) (2:54)
Review: This cracking Leroy Smart tune was recorded at Wackie's and has never been on its own 45rpm before. It was cut to the killer Love Joys' 'Studio Man' rhythm and is a mid-tempo jam with tumbling sou bass and natty chords hanging in the air above the rhythm. The vocals muse on the power of reggae music while some nice tinkles on the keys bring a bit of light to the dusty drums. Flip it over for a more paired-back dub version, 'Reggae Man.' Review: The well-regarded Digital English label has got a couple of crucial 7"s dropping at the moment and this one is a standout. It's a two-sided 45rpm that opens up with Chazbo in fine form on the A-side. His gem 'Chazbo In Session' has elements of everything from dub to reggae to lovers' rock. Review: VP have got some special and long-lost roots reggae classics here on 45rpm for the first timer in forever. The A-side here first dropped in 1979 and was recorded at Channel One, mixed at King Tubby's and produced by Prince Jammy not one before he went digital - something of a holy trinity of top-class reggae quality. Sly & Robbie - "Don't You Cry" (version) (3:57)
Review: It's time to take a trip back to the legendary 1980 production era of Sly & Robbie's Taxi label. By 1980-81, Taxi's stripped-down, heavyweight drum and bass sound ruled the dubplate scene at Channel 1 and while tracks like 'Heart Made of Stone' and 'Black Uhuru's' saw official releases, others like 'Warrior' and 'Rocks and Mountains' remained elusive and only surfaced decades later. 'Don't You Cry' by The Viceroys is one such raw, haunting roots track from that time with a thunderous drum and bass version also cinder. Straight from the dub room at 29 Maxfield Avenue, this long-lost gem is another special delivery.

Review: Jamaican reggae and dub don Willi Williams had hit with 'Armagideon Time,' back in 1977. He recorded it at the famous Studio One in Kingston and it was later covered by The Clash as the flipside of their seminal 'London Calling' single. He's back here with 'Length Of Days' which packs in his trademark vocal styles and rides on a loose, tumbling and dubby low end. Backed up by the toughest rhythm section in the business, Black Uhuru were able to push a new urgency in Jamaican music which has lost none of its power over 40 years later. This compilation on TABOU1 gathers together a treasure trove of A-sides, dub mixes and even especially resotred dubplate specials from Black Uhuru's purple patch between 1977 and 1980, when they were recording almost exclusively for Sly & Robbie's Taxi label. Some of these tunes are beyond the wildest dreams of any reggae devotee who knows their onions, but even for the casual listener there's magic in every riddim.
