Review: Into the fifth dimension flies UK producer Smev with a wicked cosmic acid journey of an EP. Billed as a bridge across the void into an alternate reality, we begin at the 'Tip Of The Iceberg' before plunging down below, concluding on a state of ending up happily 'Lost In The Realm'. Echoic squelch-synths abound, generously doused in reverb as we skirt and skip across atmospheric dusts of half-recalled affirmations - "destruction... believe in yourself..." - on 'Sweet Destruction', where the EP takes a darker turn. More energised, by comparison, is 'Rest Easy', which leaves us paradoxically, affectively unable to do anything but.

Review: Oklou is a French musician and is known to her parents as Marylou Mayniel. She dropped her debut album back in February and on it collaborates with artists such as Bladee and underscores, while some expert studio contributions from producers like the revered A.G. Cook, plus Danny L Harle and Casey MQ. Choke Enough blends Y2K influences with medieval melodies to reflect Oklou's evolution from her 2020 mixtape, Galore. This new long player offers up a deep dive into her meticulous approach to electronic, modern, 'hyper' pop while incorporating classical rigour. Review: We're firmly, groovily locked in to this latest release from Locky Mazzucchelli. Ironically, his is a *key* release on Helix Discs. The Melbourne upstarts have put out a thrilling threnody of EPs so far, with kitsch 3D rendered retro-sci album covers ('Digital Destination' by DJ Alan) and mega moods of automotive, intercity chic ('Close Contact' by The Audio Manipulator). 'Learn To Listen' fits neatly into the pile accrued so far, with 'Bias' providing a strangely out-of-order set of janker beats, and 'ShaiHai' and 'The Box' furthering this blinkered, badly-tracked yet charming sense of ease. Borked moods abound on the closing 'Leave The Party', which makes relaxed work of the otherwise sometimes fraught act of finding one's way home after exiting the warehouse.

Review: Saxophonist Marion Brown closed his chapter with Impulse! Records in the 1970s with this serene and vivid offering, featuring an impressive lineup of jazz talent. Drummer Ed Blackwell and bassist Reggie Workman provide a tight, responsive rhythm section, while Stanley Cowell's work on both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes adds rich texture to the arrangements. Brown's own composition, 'Vista,' is a stand-out, bringing a blissful vibe, while the album also highlights other great selections, including a warm rendition of Cowell's 'Maimoun' and an introspective, meditative take on Stevie Wonder's 'Visions.' The tracks flow effortlessly, from the evocative 'Maimoun' and 'Visions' to the expansive, peaceful 'Vista,' before moving into the more complex 'Moment of Truth.' With 'Bismillahi 'Rrahmani 'Rrahim' and the intricate 'Djinji' rounding out the album, Brown's final statement for Impulse! remains as emotive as it was upon its release.

Review: Newly ordained keyboardist Volodja Brodsky, from Estonia, has described his music as an exploration of the transformative power of minimalism, the art form and compositional approach in which he is trained. Brodsky's second LP lacks the contextual elucidations that accompanied the first record that 2024, but we sense that this may be because the career ball is already rolling, and no further explanations may be needed for now. Raindrops is a precipitous record, as Brodsky wrenches piano and vibraphone motifs from romantic scale meanderings we didn't know possible; widescreen voicings and compound intervals help earmark these standout moments. Elsewhere, the mood is downcast, as on 'Fogbound Streets Of Maardu' or 'Raindrops'; the left hand basso is almost always moody in feel, while the right hand always produces tearful and romantic sound.
