Les Sylphides/Love For Three Oranges
Review: Arthur Fiedler's long tenure with the Boston Pops produced a vast archive of recordings, many leaning into fan-serving territory, but this collection proves the orchestra's range extended far beyond light classical fare. Here, Prokofiev's 'Three Oranges Suite' gets a full wax treatment, moving well beyond its often-isolated 'March' into the suite's other vivid vignettes. The rearrangement of 'Les Sylphides' tiptoes between charm and kitsch, while Liszt's symphonic poems receive unexpectedly muscular renderings. 'Mazeppa' bursts with theatric flair, while 'Les Preludes' is approached with drive and precision, opposing overcooked symbolism. Fiedler's flair for drama never came at the expense of control, and this set captures a conductor who bridged populism and classical heft with confidence.

Review: John Coltrane's exploration of modal jazz shines through in this energetic and thought-provoking performance. Opening with 'Naima,' the track takes an introspective yet powerful approach, allowing us to see Coltrane's unique ability to blend intricate melodic lines with a deep sense of emotional expression. The rhythm section, led by Elvin Jones on drums, locks in with Coltrane's saxophone, creating a sense of tension and release throughout the album. Tracks like 'Cousin Mary' introduce a playful, upbeat energy, offering a contrast to the more meditative moments. This release is a testament to Coltrane's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining an innate emotional depth.

You Got It In Your Soulness
The Generation Gap
Review: One of soul jazz's most electrifying live recordings and a spontaneous triumph born from an unrehearsed, last-minute collaboration at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival. Pianist and vocalist Les McCann, alongside tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Baileyiwho had never played together beforeideliver an exuberant, groove-heavy set that captures the raw energy of the moment. Despite the lack of preparation, the chemistry between the musicians is undeniable and the resulting performance remains one of the most talked-about live jazz recordings. The set opens with 'Compared to What', McCann's politically charged anthem railing against Nixon and the Vietnam War, propelled by a relentless groove and impassioned vocals. The band locks into a deep pocket, with Harris and Bailey trading fiery, blues-inflected solos. 'Cold Duck Time' follows with an irresistible bounce, its bluesy vamp providing the perfect backdrop for extended improvisation. The mood shifts with 'Kathleen's Theme', where Harris takes center stage, exploring the melody with fluid grace before 'You Got It in Your Soulness' brings the session back to its gospel-infused roots, McCann's percussive piano stabs and Donald Dean's driving beat igniting the crowd. Decades later, Swiss Movement still exudes an infectious, unfiltered joyiproof that great jazz can thrive in the most unplanned circumstances. It's a high-spirited, deeply soulful document of musicians seizing the moment with dazzling results.

Jazz
Review: Agharta snares Miles Davis and his electric septet in full volcanic mode, recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall during a 1975 afternoon set. Sonny Fortune, Michael Henderson, Al Foster, James Mtume, Reggie Lucas and the incendiary Pete Cosey conspire with Davis to pour molten funk, noise and free improvisation into a dense, swirling suite moulded across four untitled sections. Davis barely leads; rather, the ensemble pushes forward through locked, polyrhythmic surges, Cosey's snarling guitar and FX rig driving much of the intensity. Teo Macero oversaw the recording, though here there's little of his trademark splicing; the chaos is left intact. Though once derided, Agharta is now rightly recognised as the hellish high watermark of electric jazz that it is. This 50th anniversary edition is limited to 2000 copies on translucent blue vinyl.

Bluebell
Review: London-based producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson) teams up with Melbourne pianist Finn Rees for two collaborative pieces recorded in a short session at SFJ Studios. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were laid down over consecutive days using analogue equipment, including mellotron, Wurlitzer and ribbon mics and mixed through a 70s Studer desk. The result is a measured blend of jazz-inflected composition and cinematic texture, leaning into the soft-focus feel of Italian film scores and 70s library music. 'Love In Memory' is the more stripped-back of the two, built around glissando keys and lightly arranged strings while 'Bluebell' adds bass from Matthew Hayes and develops in longer arcs, with warmer low-end and more defined structure. Both tracks avoid excess, favouring tone and pacing over virtuosity. String parts from Clementine Brown further the record's focus on texture rather than drama. The collaboration doesn't aim to be definitive but lands confidently as a quiet, well-formed experiment between two artists working with a shared vocabulary.

Review: American saxophonist Joshua Redman returns with a new quartet featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo i a group formed during touring dates following his previous Blue Note debut. The eight new compositions were written during the pandemic and reflect a more subdued register, with pieces often built around modal phrasing and pared-back forms. 'A Message to Unsend' and 'So It Goes' open the set with slow, measured arrangements that favour tone over speed. 'Words Fall Short' and 'Borrowed Eyes' continue in that vein, trading solo space across saxophone and piano without crowding the frame. 'Icarus' introduces more movement and sharper shifts, while 'Over the Jelly-Green Sky' pushes into freer rhythmic interplay without abandoning the central theme. 'She Knows' and 'Era's End' close the set with a return to stillness, the final track pairing Redman with guest vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa. Additional appearances from saxophonist Melissa Aldana and trumpeter Skylar Tang are folded in without disruption. It's a restrained but focused studio outing, shaped by clarity, not excess.

Review: This 1998 album compiles unreleased sessions from the late 70s featuring Weldon Irvine, Don Blackman and a young Marcus Miller. Known for his rare groove classics like Spirit Man in 1975 and Sinbad in 1976, Irvin's work shines here and highlights come thick and fast. They include the soulful 'Morning Sunrise' which was famously sampled by Jay-Z and Drake, the jazzy funk of 'The Sisters' with Miller's bass and Tom Brown's trumpet and the smooth 'Heard It All Before' which mixes urban sophistication with mellow fusion. Toni Smith's dynamic vocals on the funky 'Think I'll Stay A While' is another doozy which makes this masterpiece rich with jazz, soul and funk goodness.

Review: Japanese jazz fusion continued to take off with Masayoshi Takanaka's fourth album, one that is admittedly referential to Brasilia and its native styles, yet which flaunts Takanaka's virtuosic playing, and put the recreative flair of Japanese players of styles like samba, bossa nova and prog-rock on the map. All instrumental, it marks a shift from prior album An Insatiable High (1977), which brought a relatively aerobic seven-track feel; Brazilian Skies is the trans-Indian holiday after the marathon, bringing lilting beachside hums and coconut claves to a multi-instrumental funk bonanza.

Review: American jazz visionary Miles Davis teams up once again with Canadian arranger Gil Evans for a final collaboration that remains one of the most ambitious moments in either artist's catalogue. Originally released in 1960, this project blends classical Spanish motifs with the cinematic scope of Evans's orchestration and Davis's haunting, flugelhorn-led introspection. Built around Manuel de Falla's 'Will o' the Wisp' and Joaquin Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez', the album avoids jazz orthodoxy entirely in favour of a lush, hybrid form that feels less like a fusion than a full transformation. 'Solea' remains a high point, with its mounting tension and spacious arrangement capturing Davis at his most exploratory. This 65th anniversary reissue is pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing and sourced from the original masters, yielding the most dynamic and immersive version of this milestone to date. A timely reminder of just how singular Davis's vision wasiand how powerfully it still resonates.

Review: A standout in Rahsaan Roland Kirk's early recordings rep, We Free Kings (1962) snaps the young multi-instrumentalist from Columbus, Ohio in sharp and fitted suited form, striking a confident balance between bop-rooted sophistication and latent warm expression. The album has two rhythm sections - Hank Jones and Wendell Marshall on one, Richard Wyands and Art Davis on the other - with Charlie Persip anchoring on drums throughout. While the majority evidences Kirk's prowess as composer and arranger, his interpretation of Charlie Parker's 'Blues for Alice' curves the ball with a fierce, swinging homage; clearly, there's no peace for this mouthpiece. Part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, this one comes again with all-analog remastering from the original tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl and housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve.

Path Of Man
Review: New York-based producer Leroi Conroy returns after an eight-year gap with a jazz-laced two-tracker steeped in deep boom bap heritage. 'No Return' opens with crisp, dusty drums that nod to mid-90s East Coast styles, but it's the instrumentation that elevates things-Michael Sarason (of Say She She) weaves a soulful flute line across the beat, while Cincinnati harpist Rachel Miller adds a glistening edge that recalls Dorothy Ashby at her most cosmic. On the flip, 'Path Of Man' slows the pace slightly, stretching out into a more meditative head-nod zone, full of subtly layered textures and introspective mood. Both tracks are short, sharp, and packed with character-tight enough for DJs, rich enough for headphone repeat listens. A strong return from a slept-on name.

Street People - "I Wanna Get Over" (Cosmodelica remix)
Review: This second instalment in the Spring Revisited seriesia collaboration between Acid Jazz and Ace Recordsioffers two expertly handled edits from across the Atlantic rooted in the fertile legacy of 70s New York soul. London's modern disco institution Dave Lee reinvents The Joneses' 'Love Contest' with his trademark finesse, giving the track a full-bodied groove-up without losing its bittersweet heart. The strings soar, the rhythm section locks tight, and Lee's decades-deep knowledge of disco and boogie shines through in every detail. On the flip, New York-based Coleen 'Cosmo' Murphy brings lush new life to Street People's 'I Wanna Get Over'. With sun-drenched keys, crisp hand percussion and subtle delays, she transforms heartache into late-night liberation. Both sides feel like love letters from DJ to danceflooriclassic soul refracted through contemporary ears, pressed on wax that looks and feels like it just time-travelled from 1979.

Review: New Zealand ensemble The Circling Sun follow up their debut with seven new compositions that blend mid-70s spiritual jazz with modular synth work and Afro-Cuban rhythmic structures. 'Constellation' opens with choral motifs and analogue pulses, setting the tone for a set that shifts easily between acoustic and electronic palettes. 'Mizu' and 'Seki' both lean into syncopated hand percussion, with upright piano and saxophone sitting high in the mix. 'Amina' introduces layered vocals over a looser, groove-driven rhythm, while 'Flying' stretches further into ambient territory, guided by slow synth arpeggios and minimal melodic phrasing. 'Teeth' cuts back to more percussive material, cycling through drum and modular interplay without reaching for climax. Closer 'Evening' softens the pace, drawing on warm textures and sustained chords to round out the set. The sequencing keeps the energy in motion without pushing too far into repetition. It's a subtle but deliberate shift in direction - less revivalist than their previous work and more focused on tone and movement.

Review: British jazz composer, pianist and Cream co-songwriter Mike Taylor enjoyed a short solo career all to his own, and though momentary, it left behind a handful of striking recordings, Trio remaining one of the best among them. Recorded in 1966 with Dave Tomlin on bass and Norman Fearon on drums, the album walks a narrow rope between modal discipline and free play, with Taylor's playing both assiduous and somatic, its original pieces sitting alongside standards played with a close-knit looseness. Originally overlooked on release, Trio has attracted cult status among British jazz heads in the decades since. It's now been recut using vintage kit, including a 1967 Scully lathe identical to Rudy Van Gelder's, for a warm, analogue finish suited to the original's burnished understatement.

Review: A reissue that brings renewed attention to one of British jazz's most enigmatic figures, pianist and composers. Originally released in 1965, the album features Taylor alongside drummer Jon Hiseman, bassist Ron Rubin, and soprano saxophonist Dave Tomlin. Despite its historical obscurity, Pendulum is a remarkable early example of modern British jazz. The exploratory spirit of the era is recorded here with clarity and emotional depth. Taylor approaches the piano with a rhythmic and harmonic freedom that recalls hints of Andrew Hill, constantly shifting the ground beneath his collaborators. The interpretations of standards like 'But Not For Me' and 'A Night in Tunisia' are radical in their reconstruction, with Taylor deconstructing and reshaping their core elements into something both alien and familiar. His original compositions on the second half further reveal a singular voice that was both lyrical and fractured, full of promise and haunted by volatility. The album's raw, immediate recording quality adds to its intimate, almost volatile energy. Taylor's mental struggles would sadly cut short his life and output. Whether you are a seasoned jazz listener or new to the genre, this album can be enjoyed by all who listen.

Made Through Ritual sees founder James "Plunky" Branch collaborating with his son Jamiah "Fire" Branch and producer Jamal Gray, son of Black Fire Records' late co-founder Jimmy Gray. Built from demo beats and samples, each track is reinterpreted by live musicians, fusing sequencing and improvisation into something rich with intent. 'Share This Love' opens with Chyp Green's mantra-like vocals, while 'Free Spirit' and 'Broad Street Strut' blend groove with cosmic vision. 'Children of the Drum' closes things with Roscoe Burnem's resonant poetryian ode to Black legacy that roots the entire record in ancestral memory. This is an album not just made, but summoned, a vibrant continuation of the sonic revolution Plunky began in the 70s.

Sleeping Beauty
Review: Originally released in 1979, 'Sleeping Beauty' catches Sun Ra and the Arkestra at their most seductive - gliding between slow, funk-laced grooves and spaced-out jazz ritual. 'Springtime Again' floats on dreamy Rhodes chords and soft percussion, with ghostly vocals murmuring just out of reach. 'Door of the Cosmos' follows, folding in chant-like singing and funk-laced bass, equal parts devotional and dancefloor. Then there's the title track: a slow, luxurious sprawl of keys, horns and mood, glowing with after-hours warmth. A key figure in experimental jazz, Sun Ra led his ever-evolving Arkestra from the mid-1950s onwards, blending free jazz, doo-wop, electronics, poetry and science fiction into a visionary body of work. This reissue on Strut gives 'Sleeping Beauty' the shine it deserves - one of Ra's most intimate and accessible transmissions.

Review: At just 21, Lee Morgan was already a seasoned presence in jazz when he cut Here's Lee Morgan for Vee-Jay Records in early 1960. Joined by an impeccable quintet - tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Blakey on drums - the session shutters a fiery sonic snapshot of hard bop at its finest; and though the personnel lineup reads like a one-off, the interplay mirrors the energy and cohesion of a classic Jazz Messengers date. Morgan, fresh off stints with Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie, channels the melodic clarity of Clifford Brown while pushing toward his own more assertive voice. The album stands as a sharp document of a young artist already in command of his instrument, and of a group who, even outside their usual configurations, deliver a set swinging with power, raunch and finesse.

Review: Recorded in November 1959, this classic American hard bop session finds the young artist already forging a distinctive voice on the tenor. Backed by an all-star cast with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the album captures a moment of transition for Shorter, just as he was beginning his tenure with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The tenor saxophonist's first session as a leader, stands as a confident and engaging debut that hints at the genius to come. The six-track set is dominated by Shorter's originals, five in total, with the lone standard being a spirited and swinging take on 'Mack the Knife'. 'Down in the Depths' is the longest cut and is known for its moody development and dynamic solos, while Cobb's drumming is tasteful, commanding and endlessly musical. The rhythm section, then part of Miles Davis' working group, provides a locked-in yet supple foundation for the fiery frontline. A compelling portrait of a rising saxophonist surrounded by top-tier talent, delivering spirited and technically assured hard bop and a formative chapter in one of jazz's most iconic careers.

Review: Makanda Ken McIntyre's debut is a heady, off-kilter joy: angular but lyrical, warm but structurally daring, full of left turns and sly tonal shifts. The Boston-born reedist recorded it in 1960 at Van Gelder Studio alongside fellow alto saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy i an inspired pairing, given their shared fondness for flutes, extended harmony and unusual form. Released the following year, it's a document of two singular voices meeting in a moment of creative alignment. There's fire and freedom here, but also poise: 'Lautir' is both jagged and dance-like, 'Head Shakin'' lurches between hypnotic vamp and free-swinging release, while the ballad 'Dianna' quietly aches. McIntyre's originals hold their own next to the Gershwins' 'They All Laughed', which gets a cheeky, bop-leaning spin. Walter Bishop Jr. brings a clear-headed lightness on piano, Sam Jones is solid and swinging on bass, and Art Taylor's drumming balances control and fluidity, anchoring the group without ever damping their spark. At just over 44 minutes, the whole thing feels like a conversation in motion i thoughtful but unresolved, expressive but never showy. Still one of the sharpest and most compelling debuts of its era.

Review: Canadian-born, LA-based artist Mocky brings a disarmingly human touch to his first release for Stones Throw, a project centred on the richness of the voice as a communal instrument. Built with close friends gathered in his garage, the album resists digital sterility in favour of warmth and grain, with layered harmonies, live instrumentation and tape-recorded charm capturing something deeply analogue and alive. 'Infinite Vibrations' and 'Just A Little Lovin' balance gospel warmth with minimalist groove, while 'Wiggle Room' and 'Choir Beat' lean into playful vocal percussion. There's a through-line of intimacyitracks like 'Walking (Theme)' and '1000 Goodbyes' carry a sketch-like immediacy, like overheard ideas mid-bloom. Somewhere between soul, choral experiment and soft psych, this record feels like a family room jam reimagined as quiet protest against digital alienation. A celebration of imperfections, of singing together, and of sound as something tactile, felt, and free.

Review: Jeff Parker's The New Breed marked a shift not just in his solo catalogue but in the early identity of International Anthem. First released in 2016, it dug into Parker's fascination with beatmaking and the relationship between hip-hop mechanics and jazz instinct, laying a sonic foundation for later works like Suite For Max Brown and Forfolks. Parker assembled a sharp ensemble for the sessions - Paul Bryan on bass, Josh Johnson on alto sax and keys, Jamire Williams and Jay Bellerose trading off drums, Ruby Parker on vocals and Parker himself steering guitar, synths and sampler. The IA11 Edition brings new context to the record with an expanded booklet, including never-before-seen photos, notes from Bryan, and a deep-dive conversation between Parker and label co-founder Scott McNiece. Obi strip included.

Review: Different Rooms finds Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer file their patchwork method of tape-splicing, improvisation and studio play down to a fine, sharpened nib. Written and assembled between late 2024 and early 2025 in their adjoining Los Angeles studios, the album weaves live performance with granular synthesis, viola stacks, and manipulated field recordings gathered from train platforms, city streets and domestic spaces. Unlike the drifting landscapes of Recordings From The Aland Islands, their newest LP as a pair keeps rooted in a replication of deep urban listening, attuned to passer-by street textures. Jeff Parker and Josh Johnson appear on archival improvisations folded seamlessly in; though despite outside collaborations the sequence loosely mirrors itself, with motifs returning in altered form, echoing the project's core idea: though we move through different life "rooms", they are in uncanny enfilade, each ghostlily similar to the last.

Review: New Jersey-born organist Freddie Roach made his Blue Note debut in 1962 with a striking statement of groove and elegance. Recorded with tenor saxophonist Percy France, guitarist Kenny Burrell and drummer Clarence Johnston, this session captures Roach's early style in full swingilean, bluesy and imbued with soul-jazz vitality. 'Althea Soon' stands out as a masterclass in restraint, giving space for each player to dance between phrasing and feel, while 'De Bug' opens the set with a buoyant, minor-key strut that's all momentum and snap. Elsewhere, 'Ahm Miz' and 'Lion Down' channel easy swagger and smoky late-night warmth. This all-analogue reissue, cut by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl, does justice to the tone of each instrument, particularly the tactile swell of Roach's B3. More than just a debut, it's a blueprint of the intimate, rhythm-led sound that defined his early yearsiand a vital slice of soul-jazz from the Blue Note vaults.

Review: Baby Face Willette cut a short but vivid path through the early 60s jazz landscape. Stop And Listen captures him in peak form at that exact moment: lean, gritty, deep in the pocket. Born Roosevelt Willette, he brought gospel roots and a raw edge to the Hammond B3, landing in a blaze of blue fire across three hurried sessions in 1961, which also went towards his earlier debut Face To Face. For this follow-up, he sticks with guitarist Grant Green and drummer Ben Dixon, stripping things down to a trio and leaning into a tougher, urgenter sound. Reissued as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl series, this edition is stereo, all-analogue, mastered of course by Kevin Gray.

Review: Far Out Recordings reissues a hidden Argentinian gem with this offering, the late Agustin Pereyra Lucena’s elusive 1988 LP, now restored from the original tapes. A guitarist rooted in Brazilian tradition but shaped by European travel and political exile, Lucena channels both clarity and melancholy into his playing. ‘Luces de Valeria’ and ‘Preparativos Maritimos’ offer delicate phrasing and compositional grace, while his take on Baden Powell’s ‘Pequeno Vals’ drifts with lyrical restraint. The interplay between flute, brushed drums and nylon-string guitar reveals a liquid sensibility—evident too on ‘Tema Barroco’ by long-time collaborator Guilhermo Reuter. Anchored in Buenos Aires but marked by a traveller’s perspective, these pieces shift subtly from samba-inflected intimacy to a cooler, more spacious lyricism. Lucena’s phrasing reflects his belief that proximity to water affects one’s musical flow—an idea borne out here in every fluid turn and tide of this understated masterwork.

Originally a budget Everest release from 1982, Jazz Patterns was cobbled together from live sessions at The Lighthouse Cafe in 1970, rebranded to spotlight Shaw after the flugelhornist and trumpeter's rise in profile. The original packaging botched track titles and credits, selling for under five dollars before fading into obscurity. Now reissued with new liner notes from Skip Heller and fresh remastering by Kevin Chubirka, this followup recorrects the song titles and audio clarity. The lineup includes George Cables on electric piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Lenny White on drums (who most curiously used a bass drum made from an oil can).

Review: American organist Charles Kynard's 1972 session for Mainstream Records is reissued here with remastered audio and its original gatefold artwork. Recorded in Los Angeles with a core group of seasoned session players i including Chuck Rainey, Paul Humphrey and Arthur Adams i the nine tracks centre on groove-based jazz-funk anchored by Kynard's Hammond lines. 'Little Ghetto Boy' opens with slow phrasing and a blues-inflected feel. 'Hot Sauce' and 'Lime Twig' push into tighter rhythm section interplay, driven by Fender bass and clipped guitar. 'Slop Jar' and 'Rock Steady' lean heavier into funk structures, while 'Name The Missing Word' brings in sharper horn charts. 'The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face)' and 'Shout' stretch the dynamic range, the former subdued and the latter more direct. Bonus track 'Smiling Faces Sometimes', featuring Carol Kaye on bass, closes the set with a looser swing and more open arrangement. Nothing here feels overplayed i the focus remains on tone and ensemble feel. It's a clean, unfussy reissue of a record that prioritises groove over soloing, now restored with clarity but no added polish.

Review: Spring has sprung into something resembling summer, and perhaps the best record through which to celebrate this transition is Brandee Younger's latest, Gadabout Season. The title - sparked by a word-of-the-day email on tour with longtime collaborators Rashaan Carter and Allan Mednard (gadabout meaning "someone who roves about aimlessly seeking amusemnt") - came to represent the Younger trio's mission to seek spontaneous lightness through movement and music. Writing from a cabin in upstate New York, and later recorded in her Harlem apartment, Younger embraced a slow, intentional process, fine-planing a canny compositional set informed by ancestral, influential sottos of jazz, hip-hop, classical and soul; all are heard to whisper in Younger's ear as she rides each song. It's the first major body of work made almost entirely on her own, and crucially, contains pieces crafted using Alice Coltrane's restored harp, now appropriately left in her care.

Raised in Sainte-Anne, Sejor developed his style alongside future Kassav' drummer Claude Vamur, drawing jazz, electric keyboards and gender-balanced reponde into the raw spine of ka rhythms. The record opens with the instrumental 'Eritage', unfurling Sejor's project: to retool "mizik a vie neg" as a form of spiritual resistance. Meanwhile, side B's triptych, 'Primye voyaj', 'Dezyem voyaj', 'Twazyem voyaj', charts a psychic route from slavery to exile and return. Released with no budget, no tour and one day of studio time, the album's legend outlived its moment, echoing through strikes, wakes and Radio Guadeloupe airwaves.

Review: "Every day" is a noble ambition to uphold for any budding jazzor. On his eighth LP, Takuya Kuroda exalts the principle of tireless dedication to the craft by way of dedicating just a little bit of time to it every day. 10,000 hours is the ideal, but we wonder how many hours Kuruda has checked off? Front covered by a depiction of the Kobe artist bent tongue-extended over his next batch of sheet music, the record attests to the ingenuity and import of genre-fluid jazz. On the stylistic front, the now Brooklyn-based trumpeter continues the trajectory set by his earlier Midnight Crisp, leaning further into hip-hop beats, neo-soul textures, and electronic layers, though the formative jazz sensibility is not lost, having been shaped by nearly three proud decades of dedicated commitment to the craft.

Review: The final album from Tokyo's Soul Media marks a shift from 70s jazz-rock towards something richer, more refined i less about force, more about feel. Jiro Inagaki's soundworld here is open-ended but precise, framed by Norio Maeda's meticulous arrangements and a studio band that breathes through every turn. 'Memory Lane' is as mellow as its name implies, full of soft brass swells and swirling keys that hint at nostalgia without sinking into it. 'I Will Give You Samba' offers contrast i sharp-edged, quick-stepping and filled with rhythmic crosscurrents, while 'Take My Hand' struts with effortless cool, its groove compact but expressive. The palette is wide, from ballads like 'Dried Flowers' to the cinematic sweep of 'Double Images', all held together by a sense of elegant restraint. Everything is placed just so i from Eri Ohno's gliding vocals to Tadayuki Harada's moody baritone i but nothing feels stiff. This isn't fusion in the usual sense: it's more like the closing of one chapter, the opening of another, and a deliberate nod to a musical future Inagaki seemed to sense coming. Still a vivid listen today, it's far more than just a footnote in Japanese jazz history.

Review: We Release Jazz proudly purr-loins Hiroshi Suzuki's jazz-fusion-funk gem Cat, first recorded in 1975 and released in 76. With liner notes by Edo jazz critic Teruo Isono, the scene is painted in vivid detail: after moving to LV in 1971 to record with Buddy Rich, Suzuki returned to Japan for a two-day session at Nippon Columbia. What he'd learned from Rich stuck to him like sticky viscidia, resulting in a smooth cross-pollination, spotlighting Suzuki's trombone and Takeru Muraoka's saxophone: this tomcat's territory had been assuredly marked. A prized find among jazz collectors and lofi beat remakers alike, Cat sits alongside Ryo Fukui's Scenery as a supernovaic classic of Japanese jazz.

Review: By 1973, Soul Media, formed in Tokyo by saxophonist Jiro Inagaki, had spent a good many years blurring the lines of jazz and rock, of course in what we Westerners would interpret as distinctive "J import" style. With In the Groove, their studio output took a decisive leap, injecting a tighter funk sensibility into an already well oiled jazz membrane. Refusing to mimic the overseas jazz-funk scene, Inagaki and his band offered their own take: confident, dynamic and layered with a distinctly Japanese stance on groove and arrangement. The Crusaders' influence looms large, where Inagaki was closely following their evolution. But this isn't aphonic pastiche; the record finds its own voice in its interplays of brass and rhythm, with 'That's How I Feel' causing a slow trickle then downpour of funktastic piano-funk flections to come, such as 'Joie De Vivre', 'Papa Hooper's Barrel House Groove' and the brilliantly corvine 'Raven Speaks'.

Review: In the 70s, Hiromasa Suzuki's synthfluence knew few bounds. A key architect of 70s jazz, the keyboardist's seventh LP High Flying heard him heighten his parabola, enlisting a killer ensemble including Jiro Inagaki, Jun Fukamachi, Shuichi Murakami and Kayoko Ishu to produce a dense cyclorama of cosmic funk and jazz fusion. Suzuki's arrangements are restless and daring, with opener 'High Flying' leading the way through pearly angelics and attention-grabbing title sequence vocals, before clincher bodyworkers like 'Screwdriver', 'Smash' and 'Out Of Focus' pitch heady reprogrammable synth patches against fiery rhythm sections. Having then already shaped defining moments for Terumasa Hino and Akira Ishikawa, Suzuki here pushed even further. Pressed and printed in Japan, and with due respect to original intent, no digital release planned.

Review: Leeds-based group The Sorcerers expand their palette with eight new compositions that draw on spiritual jazz, minimalism and vintage electronics. The material continues their dialogue with the Ethiopique sound, though here it acts more as foundation than frame. 'Echoes of Earth' opens with slow, circular phrasing and a loosened rhythmic centre, setting a subdued tone. 'Ancestral Machines' and 'Abandoned Satellites' layer Mellotron, Jen 73 and Farfisa textures over sparse percussion, edging closer to early synthesiser music without abandoning their core ensemble dynamic. The Great Bell' and 'Beneath the Dunes' both sit lower in tempo, the former driven by low brass and negative space, while the latter hints at ambient structure. 'The Ghosts of the Black Drift' and 'The Infinite' stretch the harmonic language slightly further, with electronics used atmospherically rather than melodically. 'The Last Transmission' closes the set on a more resolved note i slightly brighter, but still understated. The group's refusal to lean into retro stylisation keeps the project grounded, and it's not a radical departure but a carefully measured step into expanded terrain.

Review: Brazilian pianist and composer Dom Salvador returns with seven new tracks produced by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, continuing his long-standing dialogue between Brazilian rhythms and US soul-jazz traditions. The instrumentation stays rooted in acoustic textures, with arrangements that favour clarity and space over density. 'Os Ancestrais' opens with subtle rhythmic shifts and melodic restraint, while 'Nao Podemos O Amor Parar' and 'Debaixo da Ponte' lean more heavily into samba-inflected grooves. 'As Estacoes' slows the tempo, foregrounding piano against light percussion. 'Musica Faz Parte de Mim' and 'Minha Melanina' follow with slightly fuller arrangements, adding layered vocals and more defined harmonic movement. Closer 'Safira' finishes with a looping melodic figure, understated and tightly resolved. The production remains transparent throughout i clean without sounding polished, allowing Salvador's phrasing and compositional style to remain front and centre. It's a concise set that doesn't aim to update or reframe his legacy but simply to continue it on his own terms.

Review: London DJ and selector Josh Mason-Quinn, better known as Somewhere Soul, curates a new collection mirrorring the ebb and flow of a full day's listening, mapping moods from early morning uplift to late-night release. Titled Rituals, this first volume is a birds-eye blend of jazz, soul and house of an international retinue, spotlighting lesser-known names together with a few more familiar underground figures. This first volume in a series offers a wide-angle snapshot of a scene in motion, built from the same crate-digging instincts and personal selection rituals that drive Josh's own work.

Song Of The Underground Railroad
Review: Now receiving a reissue with a focused selection of four key tracks, Africa/Brass remains one of the most distinctive entries in John Coltrane's catalogue. Originally released in 1961, the album marked his debut for Impulse! Records and a bold detour into large ensemble territory. On the surface, it does not radically redefine jazz, but its genius lies in how it reimagines familiar structures with fresh perspective. The title track, taking up an entire side, is a masterclass in minimalism and expression. Anchored by a single chord and two double bassesione bowed, one pluckediit unfolds with dynamic shifts in tone and texture, moving from spiritual calm to orchestral thunder. Despite its scale, the arrangement breathes, allowing space for Coltrane and his group to explore vast emotional terrain. 'Greensleeves' and 'Blues Minor' are sturdy companion pieces. The former is a reinterpretation of the folk classic, transformed through Coltrane's rich phrasing and Elvin Jones' explosive drumming. 'Blues Minor' swings harder, spotlighting the full ensemble with more open solo sections. Arranged by Eric Dolphy, the album trades some spontaneity for depth and cohesion. It remains grounded and earthy, another ace in Coltrane's heayweight pack.

Review: Kyoto Jazz Sextet mark their tenth anniversary with a pressing 12" pressing, a fresh singular take on 'Dosojin No Uta', a traditional folk song from Nagano's Nozawa Onsen Village, now reimagined as a soul jazz piece. The track first surfaced in 2022 as a demo for the Dosojin Festival video and gained quiet buzz before finalisation in 2025 with new drums and bass. On the B-side is heard 'Extra Freedom', the Sextet's erstwhile most-streamed hit (now newly pressed to vinyl) plus a jazz reinterpretation of Shuya Okino's 'Still In Love', with Navasha Daya and Tomoki Sanders. This release is the first from KJCC, a creative collective founded by Okino flaunting key Kyoto jazz figures.

Review: The latest deep dive into Galaxy Sound Co.'s Black Hole series is another carefully dug out delight featuring three essential jazz-funk-psych cuts. Joe Pass' 'A Time For Us' opens with beautiful cinematic strings, sparse drums and ghostly guitar that has been famously sampled by J Dilla and the Slum Village crew, and sounds powerful in situ here. Milt Jackson & Ray Brown's 'Enchanted Lady' follows with hypnotic modal swing, again famously flipped, this time by Pete Rock, De La Soul and Knxwledge. Closing out is Archie Whitewater's 'Cross Country', which is a funky, soulful groove with brass and keys that have been immortalised by Kanye and Common, but remains a burner here in its original form.

Review: Helsinki-based sextet Soft Power return with their fourth release i a richly detailed and expansive jazz-rock record that confirms their standing as one of Finland's most original ensembles. Formed in 2015, the group continues to push forward with a sound rooted in Nordic jazz and progressive traditions, but always shaped by clarity, control and sharp melodic thinking. It's a new release that leans into modal harmony, rhythmic intricacy and instrumental colour, without ever tipping into excess. 'Zeppelin' unfurls with measured power, while the title track 'Space To Breathe' delivers a slow, immersive build full of harmonic subtlety and textural weight. Lush electric keys and layered horns give the record its warmth, while tight ensemble playing keeps the edges crisp. There's a sense of atmosphere here that's as important as any solo or theme i a carefully built tension between groove, abstraction and mood. Without falling into pastiche, the band channel the mysticism of 70s European fusion and reshape it for the present, offering a record that's cool, grounded and quietly complex. A standout addition to the Finnish jazz-rock catalogue and a clear sign that this group continues to grow with purpose.

Review: American jazz drummer, composer and songwriter Max Roach's original song 'Freedom Day' formed part of his landmark 1960 album We Insist! Freedom Now Suite, made with lyricist Oscar Brown Jr. and sporting a searing vocal performance by Abbey Lincoln. The piece infamously rejoices at the emancipation of enslaved people in the US, yet it also refuses to shy from the continuation of racial injustices in the present day. Now, still amid the post-COVID fug, whence the messages of BLM and other movements resound as relevantly as ever before, Terri Lyne Carrington and Christie Dashiell's new reinterpretation of the Roach anthem hears a revivifying remix over jazz, electronics, and soulful vocals, retrofitting the original with signature percussions, electronics with a vibrant ensemble of Matthew Stevens, Simon Moullier, Morgan Guerin and Milena Casado.
