Review: Cecil Taylor released Unit Structures on the Blue Note label in 1966. It was his debut on the label and was quickly followed up by a second album in the same year with Conquistador! This one came with an essay by Taylor entitled Sound Structure of Subculture Becoming Major Breath/Naked Fire Gesture and is known for its high energy and atonal sounds. It sat well within the plasm of the free-jazz of the times but was at the sharp end with its ferocious paying styles. It is a record rich on colour and mathematical complexity with two bassists adding their own low end weight.

Review: Few jazz saxophonists were as majestic as Hank Mobley. He had a unique sound that sat in between the rawness of John Coltrane and the smoothness of Stan Getz and released a number of now-classic albums. Soul Station has already had the Tone Poet Series treatment and next up to get remastered and come on new audiophile vinyl is A Caddy For Daddy. He had already been a But Note artist for some 10 years when he recorded this one in 1965. It finds him alongside a first-class sextet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bob Cranshaw on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Curtis Fuller on trombone.

Review: Donald Byrd's 1967 Slow Drag album came after the jazz legend had already recorded more than dozen albums for the seminal Blue Note label. He was joined for it by the drumming of Billy Higgins, alto saxophonist Sonny Red, pianist Cedar Walton, and bassist Walter Booker who all bring their own original compositions to the album. It's a pure hard bop session that marked the end of this chapter of Byrd's sound before he moved into fusion territory. Plenty of edgy groove-fess, ad-libbed vocals and boss flavours feature on what is one of many Byrd essentials.

Review: Arranger, composer and pianist Gil Evans worked with Miles Davis on two notable albums - Miles Ahead and The Birth of Cool - and also made a fine debut of his own in 1958. A year later he got back in the studio to work on Great Jazz Standards which saw him work with two different ensembles including talents like trumpeter Johnny Coles, soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and clarinetist Budd Johnson amongst more. It is a superb look at some great jazz gems from Bix Beiderbecke's 'Davenport Blues' to a shimmering version of Thelonious Monk's 'Straight No Chaser.' It gets the full remastering treatment for this reissue.

Review: Blue Note's Tone Poet series is about reissuing some of the most notable label in its back catalogue on high-quality vinyl with all new mastering jobs. Next up is Freddie Hubbard's Blue Spirits, which was his label debut back in 1950 and saw the prodigious trumpeter kick off what was an astonishing run of records. He was joined by a wealth of talents such as James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Joe Henderson on tenor, Kiane Zawadi on euphonium and Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Big Black on congas. Between them, they provide a rich textured album full of dynamic horns and evocative originals.

Review: Originally from Jamaica, Dizzy Reece went on to become a legendary jazz trumpeter from the mid-50s onwards, and Star Bright is surely one of his finest moments. Recorded for Blue Note in 1959, the album features Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Taylor on drums and Wynton Kelly on piano, and if the hard bop sound is your thing, you really shouldn't be without this album in your life. From the loping opening of 'The Rake' to the sprightly 'Groovesville' and onwards, it's pure magic on the ears, freshly pressed up for an immaculate listening experience.

Review: The Tone Poet series is one in which Blue Note revisit some of its most classic albums and gives them some fresh attention. This vinyl edition of Stanley Turrentine's 1964 recording of Mr. Natural was produced by Joe Harley and has been mastered by Kevin Gray, who worked from original master tapes. It's pressed on 180g vinyl and comes in a lovely and deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. It is a great record from the soulful tenor saxophonist and Blue Note stalwart with help from Lee Morgan on trumpet, Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Ray Barretto on congas.

Review: Blue Note's Classic Vinyl Series turns its focus to the one and only Herbie Hancock here for another superb reissue that will keep the jazz heads happy. His long player Empyrean Isles landed in 1964 as his fourth overall. For this one Hancock linked up with his Miles Davis bandmates including Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums with Freddie Hubbard also on board with his trusty trumpet. The record works through hard bop and modal as well as plenty of soulful jazz sounds and is another standout in Hancock's discography.

Review: Kendrick Scott has been holding it down as a leading contemporary jazz drummer in the US for more than a decade, and he returns to Blue Note with a new album after 2019's knockout A Wall Becomes A Bridge. His innate sense of optimism comes through in the music, as he seeks on Corridors to highlight the things that connect us people sharing a world. It is of course a response to the isolation of the pandemic years, but also a deeper reflection on what it means to ride the wave. Review: Andrew Hill's debut album first came to the jazz giant Blue Note Records in 1963, but it wasn't until almost two decades later in 1980 when the titanic 'Dance With Death' laid down the pianist's existential side. A six-track meander through melodic post-bop, high-note ivory-tinkings, and an unmistakable focus on swing as its rhythmic base, this is almost certainly an unforgettable brush with the other side. Hill's piano is muted yet stark, providing a neatly blue counterpoint to the stereoized and doubled-up trumpet parts played by Charles Tolliver and Joe Farrell.

Review: Horace Parlan struck out in style as a bandleader in 1960 with a swathe of albums for Blue Note, amongst which was this dazzling display with his quintet. Parlan was notable as a pianist with a handicap in his hand which gave his playing a distinct cadence, and it certainly never held him back. Review: Here's another classic from one of the greatest vibraphone players to ever grace the world of jazz. Amongst Bobby Hutcherson's imperious discography lies this collaboration with tenor sax, flute and oboe virtuoso Harold Land, originally released on Blue Note in 1971. San Francisco is notable for the shift Hutcherson and Land took away from the common hard bop style they were best known for, heading towards the fruitful pastures of jazz fusion. As well as the lead men, special credit goes to the rhythm section of John Williams on bass and Mickey Roker on drums, holding down some sturdy grooves for the duration.

Review: This is a very special release indeed, for fans of Donald Byrd's 70s period and Blue Note devotees of all types. There was a heavy presence from the Blue Note roster at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, and many of the performances were released under the Live Cookin With Blue Note at Montreux banner - Bobby Hutcherson, Bobbi Humphrey and Marlena Shaw being some notable mentions. But this set from Donald Byrd inexplicably sat on master tapes in relative obscurity for a long time and now, on what would have been Byrd's 90th birthday, this raw and urgent live performance gets a proper release. It's in the vein of his seminal Black Byrd LP, but there's a more direct attack from the band in their live form - take one listen and you'll see exactly what we mean.

Review: American trumpeter Blue Mitchell, as his name suggests, had a sound rooted mostly in the blues. He was a Blue Note artists who recorded this album in 1966 and included in it is 'Portrait of Jennie' which was a ballad originally written for the movie Portrait of Jennie in 1948. Guests Jimmy Heath, Tom McIntosh and J. Russell Robinson all feature across the six tunes which mix up modal harmonies with some lyrical moments and groove-driven and subtly funky rhythms. It's a rare one to find on vinyl so do not sleep on this reissue.

Review: Domi and JD Beck are already taking the world by storm - just clock the irreverent but oh-so-sweet video to 'Smile', directed by Anderson .Paak and featuring cameos from the likes of Thundercat. The duo met by chance jamming at a NAMM convention and soon struck upon a partnership which took their serious musical skills and injected them with the kind of flippant, fun-seeking attitude that breathes new life into traditional music. They've sat in with Herbie Hancock and backed Ariana Grande, Mac Demarco and more, and now their debut album lands on Paak's Apeshit label in conjunction with Blue Note. Not Tight is cool down to the very last drop, but crucially it doesn't take itself too seriously. Domi and Beck know they've got the skills, and you can tell they're having an absolute blast messing with the jazz rulebook while delivering some impossibly sweet grooves.

Review: The legend Leonard Cohen was already sure to live on but this new collection of renditions of the legendary singer-songwriter's many and most profound songs makes it a dead cert. Produced by Larry Klein it is a remarkable record that features a truly broad array of artists, all legends in their own right, from jazz crooner Gregory Porter to post-punk poster child Iggy Pop via pop star David Gray and the always soothing sounds of Norah Jones. Sarah McLachlan's version of the iconic 'Hallelujah' is a real standout while Luciana Souza's 'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye' is also a fine reworking.

Review: Larry Young was an American jazz organist, whose claim to fame lay in his use of the Hammond B3 organ in a genre context it wasn't regularly used for: post-bop. 'Unity' came out in 1965, and saw him collaborate with trumpeter Woody Shaw, saxophonist Joe Henderson, and drummer Elvin Jones. The aim was to transcend each artist's tendency towards individualism, producing a stunning mood piece that brought out the organ in a surreptitious yet noticeable context. Six rain-drizzled original pieces span two sides, with Donaldson joined by Herman Foster, Peck Morrison, Dave Bailey and Ray Barretto for an unusual jazz combo involving congas, and a unique mood that epitomised his own brand of cool jazz-blues.

Review: Brother Jack McDuff's Moon Rappin is one of those records which sets off a thousand sample-spots. The prolific jazz man made an incredibly catchy kind of jazz funk on this record, with the title track making for something of a peak of the genre in its cool and deadly groove. It's got soul for days and plenty of compositional chops to keep you locked in for the duration. Equally, if you're looking for hot breaks, they're smattered all over this record thanks to Joe Dukes holding it down on the skins and McDuff working his magic on the organ. A timeless classic, repressed by the good folk at Blue Note with their high quality standards present and correct.

Review: The vast and ongoing Blue Note reissue series continues apace her with organist Ronnie Foster's Two Headed Freep album. Foster was a master collaborator who worked with everyone from George Benson to the Jacksons to Stevie Wonder (an in fact played the keys on Songs In The Key Of Life.) But it was his work on Grant Green's funky live LP Alive! in 1970 that caught the attention of the Blue Note boss who tapped him up for this label debut two years later. It is a vibrant seton tunes with five originals as well as covers of the likes of Al Green. Kevin Gray has mastered it from the original tapes and it has been pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Review: Cassandra Wilson originally released Blue Light 'til Dawn in 1993 on Blue Note. Gathering together selected covers of blues and rock classics, Wilson and her band turn them to sultry, smoky jazz pieces with an evocative, late-night mood. From Robert Johnson and Joni Mitchell to Ann Peebles and Van Morrison, there are some heavy hitters covered here, but don't overlook the original title track. Amongst everything else it shows off Gib Wharton's stunning pedal steel guitar, which lends itself to this moody hue Wilson and her cohorts conjure so effectively.

Review: American alto talent Jackie McLean released his Tippin The Scales album in 1979 on the legendary Blue Note. It was a post bob record that has rather remained under the radar in the years since, but will still cost you a pretty penny if you can find a second hand copy. The Tone Poet serve brings it back to the fore with a deluxe reissue package that allows the tunes to really shine. Jackie wrote two of them while Sonny Clark write three and one is a J. Latouche and V. Duke collaboration. The record was recorded on September 28, 1962 and is one of the more traditional records in McLean's oeuvre.

Review: Even though it came on the venerated Blue Note label, Sonny Red's Out of the Blue record is somehow something of an overlooked treasure. Alto sax man Sonny Red only out this one record for the label and recorded it across two separate sessions with piano from Wynton Kelly as well as Sam Jones and Paul Chambers on bass, stickmen Roy Brooks and Jimmy Cobb. This reissue is part of the Tone Poet Series which presses up records on nice heavy wax in deluxe packaging after remastering form the original analogue master tapes so you can be sure it sounds superb.
