Review: Reissued now on blue eco-vinyl, Total Life Forever marked a sharp left turn for Foals when it landed in 2010. Swapping the frantic math-rock spikiness of Antidotes for a tone more expansive, the Oxford band leant into atmosphere, melody and melancholia, with 'Blue Blood' setting the tone - all restraint and slow build - and 'Black Gold' adding a widescreen, atolling drama. The LP was recorded in Gothenburg with producer Luke Smith (ex-Clor) and saw Foals consciously break away from the tight, jittery rhythms of their debut, Yannis Philippakis harder concaving the lyrical lens. This gave ultimate rise to 'Spanish Sahara', seven minutes of glacial synths, grief and catharsis, with popular consensus determining it their defining track.

Review: Excitingly, Madonna finally unearths a long-mythologised chapter from her late-90s reinvention with Veronica Electronica, a remix album built from the sonic DNA of Ray Of Light. A limited edition silver edition, it revives Madonna's lost, cyberspatial alter ego Veronica Electronica, a somewhat medievally tinged avatar. First lit in 1998 as a companion piece to Ray Of Light's spiritual electronica pivot, which drew influences as loose as Bjork and Kabbalah mysticism, the alter record never surfaced at the time, despite a nickname, concept and promo buzz already in place. Perhaps the alter-egoic experiment was too risky for Warner's tie-clutching suits! Now formally released, it assembles rare and unreleased remixes from trance collaborators with whose work Madonna was then besotted, like Sasha, BT, William Orbit and Peter Rauhofer.

Review: Rod Stewart's voice has always sounded like it's just crawled out of a Soho bar fight - gravelly, charming and faintly ridiculous. But somehow, it still gets you. This new compilation, spanning everything from his 70s bar-room soul to recent swing experiments, is a reminder of just how strange and compelling his career has been. Few singers could convincingly move from 'Maggie May' to 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' to 'Rhythm of My Heart' without seeming like a novelty act. Fewer still could make it all hang together with any sense of emotional truth. Born in London and once a failed footballer, Stewart turned rascal energy into stadium-filling charisma. The early material - with Python Lee Jackson, with the Faces, or solo - still feels beautifully tossed-off, full of unfiltered ache. Later tracks lean into gloss and schmaltz, sometimes to great effect and sometimes less so. But taken as a whole, this is a portrait of a singer who never quite gave up on the idea that pop music could be both daft and devastating. It's not cool, and it's not trying to be. That's the charm. If you're not moved by something here, you're either too young or trying far too hard.

Review: Neil Percival Young. Canada's finest musical export? Buffalo Springfield founder, sometime member of Crosby, Stills and Nash and, as of 2025, the man behind The Chrome Hearts. He's always got something to say, and plenty to play, and whenever a new project is announce it's more than worth getting excited about. And that's before you hear this latest trip into folk-Americana territory. In many ways, this is typical Young. Stories of the journeyman, the everyday people and the struggle - all told by gently bleeding guitars and with an air of reflection. Tracks are personal and yet outward looking, including one which takes a swipe at Elon Musk - targeted within a wider conversation about crappy American cars. But then The Chrome Hearts definitely feel like a fresh chapter, and one that continues the decade-spanning saga with new ideas and energy.

Review: First released in 1981 in the wake of Ian Curtis's death, the compilation Still served as both an epilogue to and archive of Joy Division's brief but seismic existence, beginning in 1980s Manchester. A one-of-a-kind compilation, its uniqueness stems from two non-album wranglings, 'Dead Souls' and 'Glass', which precipitate a revelatory ream of studio outtakes, before a raw, emotionally freighted live set from their final show at Birmingham University. That concert also captured the only time the band played 'Ceremony' live; the tune would later reappear, reshaped, on the other side of Curtis's death, as New Order's debut single. An unusually passable idiosyncrasy consists in the fact that Curtis' vocals are barely audible on this version, as was often the case with every live performance of the song. Now reissued, this has to be one of the most comprehensive four sides of formative post-punk supersession ever to hit the shelves.

Review: You might think that you could cop a copy of New Order's seminal hit 'Blue Monday' fairly easily and cheaply given its ubiquity over the years. But no, copies in good condition still fetch around 50 quid, so this remastered reissue is well worth a cop. The single's iconic bassline and twitchy synth modulations very much soundtrack a generation, if not an entire youth revolution, but still enliven any dance floor many years later. What's more, the de-humanised vocals will always provide real singalong joy. On the flip is a 'The Beach', which is drenched in echo and reverb and general sonic filth.

Vegyn's desultory dynamics prove a toothy match for Air's comparatively amniotic French downtempo pop sound, though we *can* hear the ways in which Vegyn might've always somewhat taken after Air's production, his dream-rap sound lent well John Glacier's album released not long ago. Of course, 'Sexy Boy', 'All I Need', and 'La Femme d'Argent' are synonymous with the vibe of an era, and Vegyn's LP-remix (an increasingly popular format in 2015) honours Air's e-steamed essence, reconditioning their turn-of-the-digital vibe in jerkier retrospective tones.

Review: In one of those unique cases where a compilation eclipses the studio albums, New Order's Substance is often considered the definitive representation of the band in their prime. It's understandable given it pulled together all their singles up to 1987, but equally they re-recorded classics like 'Confusion' and 'Temptation' so everything fitted together more naturally. As a result, Substance is a more cohesive listen than many similar offerings might be and these singles remain some of the finest to ever emerge from the UK's alternative music scene. Repressed and remastered, it's sounding better than ever.

Review: The Eyes Wide Shut soundtrack was released in 1999 and weaves together haunting classical pieces, jazz standards and eerie original compositions by Jocelyn Pook. Her track 'Masked Ball' stands out as a chilling centrepiece that add to the film's surreal and unsettling mood. The inclusion of Chris Isaak's sultry 'Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing' and Shostakovich's haunting 'Waltz 2' deepens the psychological tension. The album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media so was essential to the film's mysterious atmosphere. Pook's work, paired with Ligeti, Liszt and jazz legends still stands up as a great mix of seduction and suspense.

Review: Pop sensation Dua Lipa went through an early-career reinvention by the point of her second album Future Nostalgia, whose title will surely go on to provide much theoretical fodder for the musicologists of 2045. Embracing the now deemed "retro" influences of funk, disco and synthpop (though their redemption as such is contestable, given that there are modern examples of each and every one of these still being made), Lipa worked with a range of producers, including hitmakers like Greg Kurstin, Stuart Price, and Ian Kirkpatrick, to create a femme-forward bannering of almost every pop sound that has "hit" so far. Review: All of Joy Division's biggest hits have been remastered and reissues by Warner this month. This particular heavyweight wedge of 12" vinyl offers "Atmosphere", which interestingly enough was first put in March 1980 by the Sordide Sentimental label as a France-only single under the title "Licht und Blindheit". Like "Transmission" or "Love Will Tear Us Apart", it is an essential tune with a real moodiness in the production rom Martin Hamnett. Curtis's vocals have a sense of finality to them that was to prove all too real when he committed suicide not long after recording it. 1979's "She's Lost Control" is an other archetypal, angular groove with the jittery drums that made the band so essential.

Review: Warner has worked on a run of Joy Division reissues this month and after their most famous "Love Will Tear Us Apart" comes "Transmission" which is not far behind. A 2020 Digital Remaster reboots the sounds but retains the grit and urgency of the original, which is a surging post-punk anthem filled with angst but also a sense of vulnerability and melancholy that makes it so much more enduring. "Novelty" on the flip has a broken beat line, gauzy guitar riffs and is underpinned by an excellent insistent baseline that never lets up.

Review: We've had more Neil Young compilations thrown our way over the years than many of us care to remember, but only one really sticks in the mind, and it's this one. Originally released in 1977 and chronicling the period in which Young went from being a simple member of Buffalo Springfield to one of the most heralded North American songwriters of the late century, and comprising work from that band alongside Crosby Stills Nash and Young, it's studded with delights aplenty. From the extended guitar sprawl of 'Down By The Ocean' and 'Cortez The Killer' to poignant balladry like 'After The Goldrush' and 'Helpless', no-one captured the dreams and hopes of the hippie generation in quite the way Young did, and this collection is a magnificent testimony to his most fertile and heartwarming era.
