Review: Tad Mullinix and D'Marc Cantu roll back the clock to the days when labels like Djax and Dancemania ruled the roost with artists like Paul Johnson and Armando were making dancefloors Sweat. This 4 tracker on the Spectral label captures that dirty acid house vibe like nothing we've heard in ages. Pure sexed up dance music to get off to.

Audio Injection - "Charge"
Dax J - "From The Grave"
Cleric - "Natural Process A"
Franco Gonzalez - "Submarine"
Review: Emerging from nowhere earlier this year, the LDN WHT label made quite the impression with their inaugural release incorporating full on productions from Bleaching Agent, Viktoria Rebekah, Krill Music's Espen Lauritzen and under rated Dutchman Charlton. The vinyl only London operation offer a similarly intriguing selection for release number 2 with Audio Injection and Dax J the headline draw alongside up and comers Franco Gonzales and Cleric. The presence of David Flores' Audio Injection project is naturally quite impressive and "Charge" is typical of the booming heavyweight material the Los Angeles resident has been filtering through his own Droid imprint. Ear To The Ground's Dax J is on fine form with "From The Grave" which takes a frenetic approach to taut acid tinged raw techno that still finds room for moments of mechanised emotion. Down town "Natural Process A" sees Cleric draw on the melodic approach of 'BFC' era Carl Craig within a modern rhythmic framework whilst Argentinean Gonzales demonstrates a looseness in drum programming that immediately catches the ear on "Submarine".

Developer - "Revister"
Developer - "Edificio" (Silent Servant remix)
Developer - "More Seduction"
Fanon Flowers - "Prado Obscuro"
Review: US label Modularz returns with another split 12" boasting a remix from Sandwell District don Silent Servant. The Revisited EP opens with the wonderfully unhinged techno of "Revister" by Modularz regular Developer. This vies for your attention on an A-Side boasting a remix of Developer's "Edificio" by the aforementioned Silent Servant, which chugs along with rasping hats and cavernous low frequencies. The last time we heard Fanon Flowers the American producer was TCB on a sumptuous EP for the Sect imprint, and here the producer maintains that form with the moody late night jack of "Prado Obscuro". This is accompanied by the thick loopy melodies of Developer's "More Seduction", rounding off another killer release from a label that is fast gaining a place in Juno's affections.

Playground Procedure (remastered)
Cat: LINO 22RE. Rel: 15 Jun 06
All Boys/No Girls
Shirts & Skins
Review: Another Downwards nugget gets the re-release treatment. This time the classic "Playground Procedure" by Diversion Group (The Birmingham techno supergroup consisting of Regis, Surgeon and Female) has been completely re-cut and re-mastered from the original tapes to create a bigger, louder dancefloor beast. Trimming away the ambient interludes, and focusing on the beats means a louder more evil cut - maybe offending the Downwards purists in the process - but this record serves a different purpose for a different time. "All Boys / No Girls" is a driving groove that manages to sound dense and open at the same time - this will be heads down dancefloor action all the way. On the flip, "Shirts & Skins" is a kick 'n' stick 'n' blip theme for when the DJ needs to hold the pressure. Limited initial pressing, with the first 400 pressed on clear vinyl.

Review: DJ 3000 presents Motech's tenth release "The Balkan Bridge EP". Inspired by a landmark bridge in Ljubljana, "Au Pont Des Ames Perdues" literally translates to "On The Lost Souls Bridge". Fabrice Lig composes a complex, soulful piece that accurately reflects the fruits of this collaboration. Very nice.

Review: We welcome the third part of the legendary "City Of God" series. The very first release made quite some heads turn (and nod) when it was released shortly after the cult movie. We now have a series of upcoming Brazilian artist's who present another funk filled EP with stunning Latin-fuelled floor fillers! The whole idea is based on taking various parts, atmospheres and soundtracks from the stunning movie, which are crafted into house and techno tunes.

Genetically Modified Tracks Pt II
Cat: KILLKILL 24. Rel: 28 Jan 15
Second Bass (6:39)
Consume (7:00)
Coffee Break (5:56)
Review: DJ Spider and de Costa follow their debut on Killekill with another rough and raw techno release. It begins with "Second Bass", where tough, distorted drums and a searing bass are put through a filter that see them plunging and climaxing in an unpredictable manner. At the outset, it seems like "Comsume" might follow in a similar path, but its distorted kicks gradually give way to spiralling acid lines and a sci-fi movie sample that proclaims "it came without warning...like nothing on this earth". It's hard to know whether the unnamed vocalist is talking about the track itself, or "Coffee Break", the distorted, stepping rhythm that follows, but either way it's certain that there are few other releases like this doing the rounds.

Fashion - "U Mind" (6:33)
Fashion - "Blown" (feat Eggman & DJ Spence) (4:47)
Review: It's an utterly heads down, eyes forward affair that kicks off the new Doo EP. Doctors Pepper is a superb collaborative project, and they craft a perfectly distilled minimal techno groove so deep it almost disappears out of sight. Fashion then steps up with 'U Mind', which is just as barely-there, but with a more eerie lead and icy pads. It's heady tackle to get you in a trance. Last of all, Fashion enlists Eggman & DJ Spence to feature on 'Blown', which is a creeping, stuttering bass tune with cavernous beats and late night mischief in the impish synth spirits.

Shorthand
Review: Established back in 2010, the Sudden Drop sub label from Fear Of Flying tends to choose it's output wisely with just over ten releases in this period coming from a respected cast of producers like Iron Curtis, Bleak, Roger Gerressen, and Leif. We can add to this list Ethyl & Flori, a long standing production partnership that has always stood for quality, whose 3 track Transcripts 12" shows the pair at their most diverse. "White Lotus Rebellion" is characterised by playful drums and fluttering, bird like sonics atop a Chicago indebted groove whilst "Sidestep" lives up to it's name as the pair veer off into abstract broken UK house territory. B side hogger "Shorthand" is heads down techno at it's finest.

Review: The even bigger follow-up "Funkfragment EP" ruled the DMC world charts for several weeks. After this Peter wanted to experiment more with sound and melody and started producing tech house with heavy Detroit influences, which resulted in some releases on X-Trax Sub (Mirage EP) and Tsunami Special Blend. Currently, the young talent has records released through X-trax, Tsunami, and Phonocult and has remixed work from artists such as Ferry Corsten, DJ Misjah and Melvin Reese. A pretty impressive discography for a guy of his years.

Dumb Hummer (7:05)
All The Time (5:31)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, it's been a while since we last heard from Bristol-based bass soldier Facta (AKA former Idle Hands, Bloc and Ancient Monarchy producer Oscar Henson). He's kept it simple for his first outing on Pev and Kowton's Livity Sound stable, serving up two lusciously dreamy, spaced-out cuts. Check first A-side "Dumb Hummer", a breezy shuffler blessed with sparkling computer beeps, post-tropical machine rhythms, ear-catching hand percussion and a decidedly restless bassline. B-side "All The Time" is warmer and woozier in feel. It sees Henson wrap a gentle but weighty, UK garage influenced rhythm in waves of hazy, dreamy synthesizer chords and ricocheting, dub-wise vocal samples.

Two Different Ways (Perc remix)
Two Different Ways (Richard H Kirk remix)
Two Different Ways (Perc Noisy remix)
Review: It's payback time for Perc as he shifts roles from label A&R to remixer - but can his work across three remixes match up to the Factory Floor remixes of Forward Strategy Group? It's hard to answer, not least because the reworkings from Butler, Colk and Gurnsey of tracks from Labour Division were subtle and insidious, while Perc chooses a more upfront approach to repay the favour. The only exception is the Noise version of "Two Different Ways,", where Ali Wells intersperses the sound of trapdoors slamming shut and metal grates screeching with gulps of ambient noise. Blink and you'll miss the tortured vocal snippets. It's a diversion from the main event though, and on the Perc dub and second version, Wells pushes his foot to the floor and stretches his hands out to the stars. This dub take is rooted in heavy claps and a pulsing bass as slamming warehouse beats lead the arrangement to the inevitable climax. The Perc remix is even more of an anthem; the eerie vocal that simmered in the background on the dub remix is brought to the fore and ravey riffs are added to the breeze block groove for a hands in the air moment that feels like the antithesis of Factory Floor's cool. Apart from Perc's repositioning, this release also marks the intriguing return of former Cabaret Voltaire and Sweet Exorcist man Richard H Kirk. The Sheffield producer's take on 'Ways' is more understated than Perc's three versions, but it does have an irresistibly chugging groove and possibly in a nod to the period that marked his original rise to prominence, a choo-chooing train that sounds like the android equivalent of Telex's "Moskow Disko". Two different ways indeed.

Sad Acid
Review: The fifth release from Dutch acid junkies 030303 sees the debut of mystery producer Fah, and gets off to a superlative start with "Fine Space" which is a tripped-out electro excursion that uses subtle hints of the 303, whilst melancholic female vocals are taken apart by dripping effects. Fah ups the tempo with "Bonus Orbits" and the results fall somewhere between Legowelt and Aphex Twin on a happy day, whilst "Sixears" demonstrates this unknown quantity's talent for dabbling in smudgey textures. The title track "Galaxy Dust" opens the flip, focusing on a more broken rhythmic approach which allows the space for sharp claps and hi-hats to fire frantically between menacing rave sounds and sci-fi melodies. The tempo shifts again on the final track "Sad Acid" where Fah creates a beautifully slow, chugging groove with hints of hip hop influence that forms the backdrop to a fine arrangement of warm acidic chords and beats.

The Way Is Opened & Closed (4:37)
Review: London indie dance hero Tim Fairplay returns with an awesome EP on his own Work For Love, the label's sophomore effort that has been only two years in the making. Bold and striking vintage jams bridging the gap between first wave Chicago house, Italo disco and EBM: much like his recent efforts on Rotterdam's Charlois and his other label: Crimes Of The Future which he runs with Scott Fraser. From the spooky and hypnotic jack of "Going Solo" or the menacing midnight mood-lighting of "The Search For Jessica" on the first side, to the the B side highlight that is "Shape Of Rage" awash in analogue pads and vivid modular textures over its dusty drumcomputer rattle. This is definitely one for all the retroverts out there. From his beginnings in the early noughties with London post punk trio Battant (with Chloe Raunet aka CAR) to his known collaborations with local legend Andrew Weatherall and Daniel Avery - Fairplay always delivers.

Review: The second release on Nathan Fake's collaborative label venture finds the Border Community regular flying solo with a set of heartfelt experiments that head into new territory for the ever-roaming electronica artist while sounding undeniably like him. "Fortune Bru" works around a simple, delicate electro beat pattern as a basis for rich and shimmering synth lines to unfurl, while "Nuuk" takes a moodier route into its own harmonious reverie. The chords slowly open out with a gleefully grainy texture to them, drifting into ever more expressive territory that rivals a certain Aphex Twin for sheer jaw-dropping melodic grace. In its simplicity it makes for one of Fake's most immediate and charming releases to date.

Review: You basically can't go wrong with Nathan Fake's seminal "Outhouse", hence this 2nd remix instalment that features Valentino Kanzyani and Marko Nastic each dropping killer new interpretations. Valentino's mix hits the original's melancholy vibe dead-on, with active electronic drum patterns and well-placed drops. Nastic's mix adds a grungier John Dahlback/Stephan Bodzin feel for those that like their minimal more 'maximal'.

Review: Len Faki is no stranger to Ostgut Ton having mixed the label's third and possibly hardest sounding Berghain CD back in 2009. Whilst the Berlin fixture has remained resolutely busy since then, Faki has remained absent from the OSTGUT catalogue numbers. Until now that is as the Basement Trax Vol 1 12" signals Faki's return to Ostgut colours in impressive and diverse fashion. Lead track "Btx1" is dominated by the heavily processed treatment of some orgasmic sounding female vocals which are submerged deep in the mix and smeared greedily across the channels chased by whip cracking percussion. The flipside accompaniment "Btx2" is a tougher version with the tribalistic percussion gradually consumed by the vastness of Faki's string arrangements and the final version "Btx3" sees Faki present a swirling mass of ambient calm. How good would it be to hear this at 2pm on a Sunday in Berghain?

Independance Ave Orchestra - "Welfare"
Review: ** REPRESS ** A seventh release on Proibito arrives and it finds label boss Anthony Naples switching things up as the full artist approach is cast aside in favour of some posse gathering tactics. Label regulars Hank Jackson and Huerco S both feature (the latter under his newly helmed Independence Ave. Orchestra pseudonym) and they are joined by Proibito debutants Alex Falk and Jackson Lee - both of whom have priors for Proper Trax and Mystical Disco respectively. "Mitsuda" by Falk is a strange, ghostly slab of techno characterised by odd phasing and the occasional gurgle of stretched tape, whilst "Mongoos" from Hank Jackson keeps it weird but turns the mood towards something a lot frostier. On the B Side "Sumba Togola" from Jackson Lee mangles up all manner of vocal samples amidst a twisting groove of manipulated bass lines and unpredictable drum programming whilst the glistening "Welfare" suggests Huerco S is using the Independence Ave. Orchestra name to show a different aspect of his productions skills.

With a mission statement that states they want to put a little sex back into techno, both cuts back up this vision with warm, visceral physicality. Review: Faugust is a new alias for Hotflush regular Sigha dedicated to sounds of a more exotic, leftfield nature. This first 10" under the pseudonym - released on Shifted's well-regarded Mira imprint - features a quartet of intriguing compositions. Check, for example, the droning atmosphere and intoxicating textures of ambient closer "Against the Sea", or the krautrock-goes-shoegaze-in-India vibes of humid opener "Penitence". Or, for that matter, the grandiose synth melodies, alien chords and skittish IDM rhythms of "Persuasion", which sounds like Autechre's "Basscadet" after a few too many cups of mushroom tea. The cinematic ambience of "A New You" completes a superb package.

Review: Mark Broom and James Ruskin follow up their Lightbox album as The Fear Ratio with the Skana EP. The introduction of "Dirty Paws" sounds like something you would hear when trying to contact a passed loved one through radio static and white noise. A broken beat drum loop and swooping bass stabs break the confused silence which is later followed by air raid snares similarly heard in Plastikman's "Spastik". "Fedec" falls somewhere between Burial, Aphex Twin and early Scuba productions, replete with fuzzy electronics, moody melodies and over-driven kick drums. Like Stroboscopic Artefacts' Monad series the EP packs an ambient or beatless track and this comes in "Kingdom Of Ends", showcasing the duo's rarely heard penchant for non-dancefloor sound design. The only techno synonymic styled production is "Skana", a beautifully deep and pushy piece of melancholic techno.

Describing themselves simply as 'synths/rhythms/voices/moods' the Featureless Ghost pairing of Matt Weiner and Elise Tippins occupy the crawl space between synth pop, wave, industrial and nascent forms of techno, which manifests itself in two intriguing original tracks in "Sugar coated" and "Cybersapien". Kudos to CGI for the remix commissions too, with both Scott Fraser and Beau Wanzer excelling - the latter's take on previous FG single "Flash" is a particular highlight here.

Review: With the Sensate Focus project bringing further attention to his work, Mark Fell delivers a new project to Liberation Technologies that sees him extolling the virtues of hyper-detailed production methods and system-based sound generation once more. More in line with the jagged edges of his work in Snd, both sides of N Dimensional Analysis dart well away from dancefloor considerations in their intense dispositions. The crystalline synths are present as ever, while the beats penetrate deep with their finely sharpened points, but nothing else can be counted on as any hint of rhythm shatters into stutters and shakes of the track structures, pushing into the kind of territory you can find Autechre in at their most obtuse.

Offering a more well rounded and experimental display of Fengler's production palette than the functional techno he's issued in 12" format, Fokus has a definite highlight thus far and it's interesting to see who has been chosen to rework tracks from it. Shed and Dave Clarke are naturally the headline draws here and their respective takes on "Jaz" and "Sky Pushing" are as full throttle as one would expect but it's nice to see Solar One boss Robert Witschakowski get the exposure his work as The Exaltics deserves with a killer throbbing Italo-techno rendition of "King Of Psi".

Frantic
6 In A Row
Mosaique
Review: There are two defining aspects to Marcel Fengler; firstly he retains a more humble profile to his more celebrated fellow Berghain residents Klock and Dettmann, and secondly original material from Fengler may be an infrequent proposition, but it's almost always worthy of your attention. This latter aspect is certainly true of the three track Frantic EP, a worthy return to Ostgut Ton, following last year's Berghain O5 mix and a clutch of notable EPs. Commencing with the title track, Fengler draws on a canny complement of insistent loops and sumptuous synth arrangements, while the rugged drum patterns make "Frantic" seem all too appropriate a title. Flip over for the alien techno funk of "6 In A Row", a track which masterfully swings between the thick groove and fast fingered smears of neon synths, while the glistening beauty of "Mosaique" offers some nice contrast to the previous onslaught.

Kyu EP
Kyu EP (12")
Cat: IMF 07 . Rel: 19 Jul 16
Kyu (5:52)
Shitau (6:49)
Zen (5:34)
Review: Marcel Fengler has certainly carved out his own style like the other Berghain residents as a producer. His cyclical, funky and above all functional DJ tools firmly wear their Robert Hood influence on its sleeve the while carrying some of the powerful and industrial undertones that come naturally given the aesthetic and sound of that famous room he plays week in week out. For another outing on his own IMF imprint, the Kyu EP features some heavy artillery for serious techno djs, highlights being the dynamic opener "Kyu" which couldn't be any more perfect an example of what 21:00 on a Sunday night at Berghain sounds like. On the flip the more hypnotic "Shitau" features Millsian style chimes and sonar bleeps balanced out by those soulful and emotive for pure futurist tension of the greatest kind.

Marcel Fengler - "Scion"
Thomas Hessler - "The Escaper"
Echoplex - "The Relapse"
Vril - "Thronwagen"
Review: In advance of a new album for Delsin due later this month, the ascent of Giegling artist Vril continues apace with an appearance on Index Marcel Fengler, the label overseen by Berghain resident Marcel Fengler. Founded in 2011, the label was put on hold for various reasons but returned last year with 12?s from Echoplex and Thomas Hessler which confirmed IMF's new focus on operating as a platform for other artists. Along with Vril deep and dubby banger "Throwagen", both Echoplex and Hessler also feature on the Unit EP whilst label boss Fengler turns in his first original production in some time too.

Above Safe Levels
Review: Ade Fenton has been the resident @ Birmingham based Atomic Jam for 8 of its near 11 year existence, and has been a main player in the UK techno scene for years. He also DJs regularly around many of Europe's top techno nights, but 2006 has seen Ade's work and profile rise to another level, March 2006 saw the release of the Ade Fenton produced album by Gary Numan, entitled 'Jagged', which entered the UK Indie charts at #1, and the Fenton remixed single 'In A Dark Place' has been released exclusively via 'iTunes' in August. In January 2007 he is scheduled to begin work on Gary Numan's next album, and he is currently in the studio working on a remix of electronic legend John Foxx's seminal classic 'Burning Car'.

Review: If someone had to describe "Synaptic" with one word, 'bassline' would be the one. The a-side "Ausklang" is dominated by a saw tooth bassline which modulates more and more to reach the climax shortly before the break. The b-side, "Stargazer", begins with a techno groove and a charmingly lascivious bassline.

TRINITY Remixed

Pagodas (Adam Beyer remix)
Woman Scent (Hertz remix)
Tresor West (Chris Liebing remix)
Womans Scent (Heinrich Mueller remix)
Review: The Advent's brilliant "Sketches" recordings on Tresor were unmistakably essential in the progression of tough, intelligent techno music from the 1990s into the new century. Cisco Ferreira challenged the dance music establishment from the underground and continues to deliver his blistering style well into the first decade, as demonstrated with gusto on his 2005 Tresor album "TRINITY". With its wall-of-sound penchant for no-nonsense, in-your-face techno music for purists, Ferreira naturally took this penchant into the most respected leagues of electronic music's world of production and remixing, when he decided to deliver three tracks from his album into the hands of four international experts.
