Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Review: Clut deliver a specialised clout-glut with a fresh split EP from rising artist Alric Aerial, who here teams up with yet another artist who's so far flown under the label's radar - Electrodynamique. Here the pair deliver four electro-dancefloor tracks primed for every situation: sleazy bar, backlit festival stage, ironic doomsday scenario, you name it. This EP's cascading sixteenths flow like metallic droplets, their acid lines and FM blurps splurging forth with increasing restlessness and impertinence, and decreasing self-control. Particularly squelchy is Aerial's 'Tough Cuts', which moves trigger-happy on the cutoff filter whilst dungeon-bound sine tones splay across the top edges of the track, like ectoplasms left behind after a string of Zeno's paradoxes have been solved. 'We Are The City' by Electrodynamique indulges a final emery note, abrading its curveball electro mix to a grinding, apocalyptic oblivion.

Midnight Drive In Santiago (dark green vinyl 12")

Review: Agents Of Time return to Afterlife with the 'Midnight Drive In Santiago', EP following on from their debut Forest Of Lies in 2018. Though they fit well within the Afterlife oeuvre, the Chilean trio nonetheless channel a singular sound, bringing synthy, Miami-vice-gripped arp builds to a downtempo pace, amounting to a no less than composed but exciting take on the vintage sonic sublime. Most of us haven't been to Santiago to experience what it might be like to night-drive there; but we're more than sure that this EP will still survive the car test and provide a worthy vicarious alternative, with the toothy cascades and chromatic synth swells of 'Midnight Drive' and emergent arps of 'Chain Reaction' making for a compelling second-best.

Review: Amazingblaze returns to home label KNTXT with an exhilarating new release that reflects the increasing but subtle evolution of his style. 'Touch The Sky' contains four standout new ones, following up 2022's 'Venture' EP with a worthy sequel in the vein of hard techno and trance. Something more than mere club-functionality is achieved here, with the dreamy quality of the music of many contemporary Scandinavian artists lent to the otherwise crushing weight of Belgium's schranz and rave tradition. In other words, the likes of 'Kaleidoscope' and 'Thank You, God Always' revolve around big-roomed motifs - supreme buildups, exhilarating highs - whilst also not merely indulging the pure melodicisms of trance. There's more than a hint of antagonistically sublime grit to these tracks, suggesting that trance need not always be smooth, nor techno always gritty; it's possible to tessellate the two.

Cole features on the first one, Cyberspace. which barrels along at 170 bpm and is a high-energy rush of driving rhythms and haunting dystopian samples. Review: Nuno Dos Santos' Something Happening Somewhere label is back, revisiting a classic by a right legend of the scene: none other than Dave Angel. The UK veteran unleashed these surefire cuts back in 1993 and they have certainly aged gracefully. The A-side's 'Original Man' is soulful techno the way it's meant to be; a true zeitgeist of Detroit influenced techno with its DX sounds and syncopated 909 rhythms, while B-side offering 'Quarter Pounder' brings the future funk on this properly slamming cut. It also comes with B2 track '4th Symphony', an exclusive not featured on the original pressing.

Review: Hyperdrive's label debut was a biggie that brought together old and new-school techno on one fizzing EP. The follow-up comes soon after and this time makes no bones about being a Rave Revival. Anthrophia's 'The Voice' kicks off with what is a hefty breakbeat cut with edgy rave stabs and slamming bass. Dimension 23 - 'Fascination' (Seb G mix) then takes a more stripped-back approach with turbocharged synths layered up over silky drums. Centuras brings plenty of bright, euphoric prog energy to the urgent drum funk of 'Jizz' and last of all Dimension 23's 'The Eagle' then kicks out more dusty old-school breaks with machine gun synth fire. A potent EP, make no mistake.

Review: Lyon-based Brazilian Pedro Bertho is an accomplished producer who now steps out with his own label, fittingly enough called Chez Pedro. It kicks off with a new EP 'Starlit Crates' which has already been teased by the well-received 'Have You Ever Played in Abidjan' (exclusive aired on Juno Daily), which paid tribute to that vibrant city and the Ivory Coast. 'Have You....' is a collaboration with percussionist Tutsy N'Zore, who adds great layers to Bertho's deep grooves, but there's loads going onelsewhere too.. 'Let Me Show You' has what sound like ambient recordings from a bustling market over bass-driven beats. 'Blue Hot Monday' is another humid and muggy deep techno mind melter and 'Shaved' is a crisp, tech-edged cut with frazzled synth work for peal time deployment. A great example of making functional, floor-pleasing grooves that have oodles of personality and character at the same time.

Review: Rapidfire techno-trance from Berlin's Changer, in the form of four rogue planetary collisions which, we must admit, we weren't ready for. In fact, it's pretty much statistically impossible for a human body to survive exoplanetary impact; all Changer promises with this EP is to help guide us through the emotional tumult that might ensue, and to perhaps convert said worry to excitement. While opener 'The Carrier' impresses somewhat with its furtive fast-trackings of bass and low-slung yet lightfooted kicks, it's the ensuing 'Undiscovered Expeditions' and jackhammering 'Type 2' that really capture our imaginations, with their relentless cosmic swirls and flustered synths caressing the top edges of things.

Review: Two underground artists with many years in the scene behind them in Darwin Chamber and DJ Spun come together for the second in their Episode series on Rong Music. Once again they dig into the sounds of their formative years while also looking to the future as they blend dub, trance and techno into lithe new forms. 'The Revolution' is a mid-tempo and atmospheric roller with hypnotic vocals, while 'The Playa' is a deft bit of electronic minimalism with a deep space feel and ticking 808 sounds. Things get more loose with the warped synths and dusty tech beats of 'Dysfunction' while 'Acid Tounge' closes with trippy designs, a skeletal rhythm and a sense of late-night melodic and afterparty mischief.

She lives in Napoli and keys herself to herself but still has legions of fans all over the world who lap up her melodic take on big room techno. His timeless 'Children' appears on the A-side while her remix of his 'One & One' (feat Maria Nayler) comes on the b-side. It features rolling drums and angelic vocals as well as dark, prying and trance-tinged synth leads.

Review: OG trance pusher Marcel Hol aka. Hole In One laid down his most famous track, 'Life's Too Short', in early 1996. There is a strange irony behind the track's rise to fame; in its original form, a B-side version of the track known as the 'Live At Paleis Soestdijk Mix' existed - it was named after the residence of the Dutch royal family, and featured the riveting, nigh breathtaking sound of a crowd cheering in the buildup. It was perhaps the title, in combination with the crowd cheering sound effect, that spurred an unusually fervent throng of record labels to pursue a release with Hol. This was despite the fact that the track wasn't recorded live at all, and that Hol hadn't ever set foot in the Paleis Soestdijk, with the cheering worked into the track, as per usual, during the production stage. Whatever the truth of it, the legacy of Hol's star sonic piece is paid a modern homage in the form of two remixes by Jerome Robins here, who polishes the track for the contemporary ear whilst also including the 'live' palatial mix.

Review: French producer Houdini (Simon Peter Ellis) might be toutable as merely a trance producer on the surface, but the reality is that he's much more of a weirdo than our genre tags make him out to be. The name of the 'Strange' EP suggests that it is, well, just that. With these tracks released in and around 1994 on the infamous Fax label run by the late great Pete Namlook, they're as mad as hatters, barely clinging on to their status as trance numbers before indulging some of the oddest tricks and presets in the book. The humourously-named 'Don't Know Really' and the organified 'Beyond Recognition', for example, are essentially house numbers, but in their indeterminate moodwork and jarringly in-betweeny palette, it's really up to you as to how to categorize them in the end.

Review: Indie house duo Parachute Youth released their 'Can't Get Better Than This' single back in 2012 and it went on to become a huge international hit. Now they have resisted it after pairing up with Chicago house vocalist John Summit. It's a cinematic work that immerses listeners in a dystopian realm that blends avant-garde tones with manga-inspired cyberpunk vibes. Each track serves as a gateway to a world where technological progress intertwines with societal decline, which is of course often the focus of classic cyberpunk literature. Di Venere and Verboten also combine under their Affekt Unit alias to deliver captivating remixes and bring trance and tribal techno elements to the party.

Review: Amazing next-gen cyborg dance music from sibling duo Mathame (Amedeo Giovanelli, Matteo Giovanelli) , a self-described "audio project" working in ultra-clean progressive house sounds. 'I Will Find You' sounds like a progressive anthem from an Arcadian alternate timeline; think what might happen if Tiesto performed a DJ set in the Halo universe, to a stadium full of Super Soldiers. Its front cover model - a cyborg girl with an augmented plate face mask - is indicative enough of the sound you might expect, but the brothers Mathame's music touches on more than just futurity, with tautly squeezed vocals and "ouch" synths adding to an already impressive uplifter.

Review: Hailing from the brilliant, tangled web orbiting Future Sound Of London, Mental Cube was one of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' short-lived side projects which found them indulging in the bleep and acid house sound. Given the talent at the controls, it's little wonder this release became such a holy grail - a misfit twist on the conventional formula of club records at the time and yet still as satisfying as any of the more widely played early 90s hits. This is the first time the release has been reissued in its true original form, meaning both mixes of 'So This Is Love' and the 'Santa Monica Mix' of 'Q'. Listen out for the cheeky nod to 808 State on 'So This Is Love' - a respectful tip of the hat rather than a cheeky lift, we'd say.

Review: The Model brings great form and function to this arresting new EP on long-running French label Partout. It kicks off with 'I Am Always On Your Mind' which has bright, glass melodies and snappy snares that very much get your attention while 'Crossover' is a more frazzled bit of synth-laden techno with sci-fi motifs and withering melodies. 'Six Days Of Heat' is a slower groove with another big focus on the melodies, this time they are rather eerie and unsettling. Last of all is 'Global' with its smeared pads and dusty drum work.

Review: Technohead were a married couple of Lee Newman and Michael Wells who also famously recorded under the other names Greater than One (GTO), Tricky Disco, Signs of Chaos and Church of Extacy, They were well known in the late 80s and early 90s for their raw techno and rave tunes that explored every genre in the electronic dance kaleidoscope from Gabber to ambient music, even scoring a UK number one single with the warwormy pop gabba of 'I Want To Be A Hippy'. In 1993, their hardcore hit 'Passion' was a huge success. Now, a little more than 30 years later, German veteran Thomas Schumacher updates the track into another anthem worth checking out. Whichever side you choose, expect this slice of techno history to reign over the dancefloor. An unforgettable tune.

Review: Given his profile and the fact that much of his music is released via the Diynamic Music imprint he co-founded way back in 2006, it's something of a surprise to see Solomun pop up on Running Back - a testament, perhaps, to his friendship with RB chief Gerd Janson. 'Can't Stop' is undoubtedly a peak-tine classic in the making - a breathless, non-stop sprint in which waves or raw electronic lead lines, TB-303 driven bass and tech-house flourishes ride a jacking house beat. Review: Reissued through Dance On The Beat, Storm's debut self-titled EP from 1998 gets a fresh reissue, doing best justice to the incarnation of the release put out via Positiva Records, which heard the original club mix sit side-by-side with remixes from Man With No Name (real name Martin Freeland) and Rollercoaster (Koen Groeneveld, Addy van der Zwan & Jan Voermans). Storm, in turn, were Markus Loffel & Rolf Ellmer, whom together laid down this debut dirge as a new exploration in trance music. The titular 'Storm' is an authentically tense, cyclonic trance whirl; the track proves that the genre need not just be thought of in gushingly emotive or ecstatic terms, that it can also be unnervin, sublime. Freeland and Rollercoaster's versions harness increasingly more barometer-shattering beats, like Raiden gods in command of supercells.

Review: The mighty Drumcode is back with another one of its beefy techno 12"s, this time with Sudo bringing the noise. The whole of the a-side is given over to 'Real World', a taught, twanging techno cut with scintillating snare rolls and pulsating pads driving it forward beneath raw vocals. On the flip, that knack for industrial sound design also reappears with more metal clangs but also some trance-inducing chords which will zone out dancers on 'Construction'. Review: Reissued 30 years on, SYT's 'Deep Drift' first hover-slammed its way onto our turntables as a spinoff EP of the much-nattered-about Shave Yer Tongue free party, which took place every Sunday night somewhere in suburban West London. The night's founders, Scott James and Christopher Hayne, took on this duo-deistic alien guise as a response to the tractor-beaming blisses they'd experienced on the dancefloor, yet which they could not find solid enough expression for in words. 'Siren' and 'Loop Hole' span allotropic forms of the same style, quantum superpositions of trance: cascading, welcoming, introductory; then cautionary, hovery, supernatural. 'Drift' goes big on the surround mix with extra boxy kicks; 'Jitter' then serves as a bleeping, free-teknikal enervation in trance, and is by far the best on the record, for its unguent stereo design and strobing synth patch layers.

Review: Everything about this one from the title to the art work screams trance. The music matches up too with TALLA 2XLC's 'Bliss' offering the sort of turbo charged techno drums and richly emotional, over the top synth work that will get hands in the air that any big main room will devour. On the flip, things get ramped up even further with big walls of synth texture all topped over with rushes of trance energy on 'No Fate.' This is a potent two tracker that comes on nice limited translucent vinyl.

Review: Unstoppable trance and hard trance from Talla 2XLC and DJ Tandu, two underground DJs and hyper-uppers from the formative heydays of the Frankfurt trance scene. Known for their many torrential mix series most notably, the pair have nonetheless never stopped releasing music. This new extended mix of 2023's 'Velvet' is the third link in the chain after the original 'Velvet' came to Unsubmissive Records in 1999. Several iterations in, 2XLC and Tandu contrast each other heavily with hard and melodic versions of the track especially, Tandu's especially blowing away with its synthetic melodies and washes.
