Al Unity - "Spirulina Dub" (3:17)
Review: Aba-Ariginal is the alias of trumpeter (and Homefront Productions boss) Patrick Anthony Tenyue, whose accomplished musicianship accompanies the uplifting reggae riddims of 'Spirulina', followed by a bunch of versions by Al Unity. Tenyue (aka Matic) has and continues to record with some of the greatest reggae recording artists, and is a sought after musician and producer. His passion is 'dubwise' where he is known for the great brass horns as heard under the Aba Ariginal alias. With his brother Henry 'Buttons' Tenyue, he's worked with every successful reggae act coming out of the UK and Jamaica.

Peter Abdul & The Abeng Musical Box - "Inflation" (2:55)
Russ D In Front Room Studio - "Inflation" (Dubwise) (2:57)
Review: Italian label Dig This Way serves up a third sizzling offering, this time featuring Nigerian singer Peter Abdul. He does his heart aching work over a solid rhythm from Abeng's Musical Box and the results are steeped in romance and yearning. A flip side dub from Russ Disciple is also well worth checking for its smart effects and fathom deep bass. Abdul is a relative unknown but for his 1984 album Get Down With Me, which head in a more boogie and funk direction. Regardless, this is a tasty dub, make no mistake.

Stay (dub) (3:30)
Review: This hidden gem from 1975 was self-released on Glen Adams' Capo label out of Brooklyn, New York. 'Stay Dread' rather flies under the radar but is a must-listen, especially the outer limits version on the flip which is a brilliantly psychedelic dub with a mad cosmic lead that takes you into all new realms. The original is a great example of reggae's raw energy and experimental spirit with Adams' distinct vocal style adding a unique touch to proceedings. The rare original has become a sought-after find for reggae heads so do not sleep on this reissue which is unpolished yet powerful.

Righteous Kingdom (version) (2:53)
Review: African Brothers were formed in 1969 by three Kingston teenagers and they went on to become key players in the global dub and reggae scene. After a busy decade working with the likes of Sly and Robbie, they all went on to work on separate solo careers but not before laying down some heavy jams. "Righteous Kingdom" is one and is an earthy bit of slow motion lovers rock with super soulful and sweet vocals musing on the battle for survival laid over swaggering drums, with rousing flutes drifting off into a cloudless sky above.

Aisha - "Guide & Protect" (3:45)
Mad Professor - "Aztec Warrior" (3:45)
Review: Is there a more consistent partnership in UK lovers rock than Pamela 'Aisha' Ross and Neil 'Mad Professor' Fraser? The pair has been working together consistently since 1986 and continue to periodically deliver killer cuts. 'Guide & Protect', which was first featured on the CD (but not vinyl) edition of Ross's 1987 album High Priestess, is one of their best - a sweet, life-affirming affair in which Ross sings sweetly and emotionally atop a typically synth-heavy, dub-flecked lovers rock 'riddim' by the effervescent Fraser. On this 7" edition, an edited version of the 1987 original comes backed by 'Aztec Warrior', a deliciously dubbed-out Mad Professor take on the same riddim featuring echoing flute and brass snippets.

Oh What A Dub (3:14)
Review: Partial are busy reissuing a series of the best works from pioneering UK dub outfit Alpha & Omega. They are known for the likes of their timeless 1991 reggae album Overstanding and seminal 'Shashamani' tune which came on a 1996 long player called Voice in the Wilderness. This 7" offers up 'Bush Ganja' which came originally back in 2006 and was made as a one-off with Gregory Isaacs, the late and great Jamaican singer. It has pretty much been sold out since the day it dropped but now comes back to a sound system near you with its ice cold dub, head twisting electronics and impassioned vocal. Check the flip for a mad dub.

Review: Alpha & Omega are serious UK dub legends and now they are back on ZamZam with a typically powerful new anthem featuring Steppas Records' Nai-Jah. Over a thunderous bassline, melodica, sparkling keys and evocative jungle sounds, Nai-Jah's heartfelt lyrics call for empathy and action as he signs "Money-making has filled our minds with disease." The flipside jam on this fine 7" is 'The Dubplate Trembles' which extends the vibes in classic style. Another fine collaboration from these mainstays who have already long since assured their legacy over the course of 30-plus albums that have shaped global sound system culture.

Review: Amatah Keo is a new and talented artist from France with roots in Laos and here he works with Birmingham born, French based Kevin Tweed aka Ras Tweed to perfectly capture that trademark Lone Ark sound, created and perfected over the years by producer and engineer Roberto Sanchez. Keo's voice shows why he is such a promising singer as he gentle laments over a nice earthy, warm reggae beat that is finished with mad effects and a snaking bassline that incorporates subtle references to his Asian descent. Review:
Hardcore steppers crew unite: King Alpha and Fikir Amlak come together for a big one here that features the rib-rattling "Lalibela" on the A-side. It's got steel plated drums and deadly bass, as well as plenty of swagger and brightly lit synths. The vocal toasts add further weight and a touch of exotica, while two dub versions pare things back to the core and crucial elements. "Addis Ababa" is a more freaky cut with modern effects and twisted synths adding elements of industrialism. Two more dubs take the tune in more summery, airy directions, and both are utterly essential.

Review: Welcome to Natural Selectas, a brand new label with a fresh digital-dub sound. This one has been a long time coming as it first surfaced as far back as December 2019 but only now makes it to wax. Anatta Sound have only three tunes to their name including this one, but it's a heater. It features Anya Asia and comes as four different versions. 'Roots Of Creation' is clean and fresh and rides a nice chord refrain and metallic drums, then the dub strips back the soulful vocal. The 'Horns of Creation' add plenty of mystic horns with float around up top and then 'Flutes Of Creation' is even more exotic and hypnotic.

Money Money (version) (3:01)
Review: Horace Andy is one of the most recognisable voices - and names - in reggae. His catalogue is a real treasure trove of gold and 'Money Money' from 1982 is always one of the most heavily played. Of course one of the reasons it is so well known is because it is the source of a legendary sample by Massive Attack on one of their earlier records. The lyrics, about money being the root of all evil, will forever remain relevant, as will the sounds around them. The version is longer and just as essential.

Version (3:04)
Review: Horace Andy dropped one of his most well-known cuts back in 1987. It's a lovely rootsy dancehall skank in the form of 'What A Problem' that he produced himself alongside Michael Taylo and Andy Bassford. His mic work is exceptional as he twists and turns his vocals to ride on top of the drums and deliver his message with style and grace in his textbook smooth vocal tone. The version on the flip drills down into darker and more gritty dancehall vibes with the fat bassline front and centre next to plenty of echo and reverb.

Review: The Bullwackies cut of Horace Andy's 'Serious Thing' eclipses on all sides the classic Bunny Lee version of five or so years earlier - Horace like an angel over a stepping roots arrangement, with the horns on side A imparting extra gravitas, and the majestic Wackies production extra effects on the flip. Originally released in 1981, in the company of Youthman, Sometime Girl, Rockfort Rock - the horns versions in the UK on the Infradig label, the guitar versions (side AA of this reissue) in the US on a white label stamped with the Wackies insignia - another Lloyd Barnes killer, dead seriously.

Review: Hope & Faith Records has put together three different 7"s featuring the original 'Standing Tall' riddim, which is a slick production in the early 70s roots reggae style. Acclaimed Spanish singer Payoh Soul Rebel is behind one, the female harmony trio from Basque reggae band Tacumah another, and this one comes from Jamaican legend Horace Andy who brings a fresh take on the classic roots sound. His smoky vocals bring real warmth and depth while a flip-side dub goes deep.

Horace Andy - "Tribute To Bob Marley"
Jah Batta - "Great Super Star"
Horace Andy - "Love Hangover"
Horace Andy - "Lingering Spirit"
Review: This re-issue combines two 12"s. "Tribute To Bob Marley" was originally released on the Top Ranking International label in 1981, soon after the Wailer's death in May, and provided an outstanding cut on Horace Andy's exclusive album set issued the following year in London by Solid Groove. The flip side featured Jah Batta's DJ cut "Great Super Star", unaccredited on the original label. Lingering Spirit offers a completely different mix, first issued in England on the red Bullwackie's label in 1983 (its title more reticent now, after the hundreds of Marley tribute records). It was coupled with Horace's compelling interpretation of "Love Hangover" which though Lloyd Barnes himself has always been a soft touch for a bit of lovers - had been principally arranged and recorded by Prince Douglas, the year before.

On this occasion, they're looking to a cut with Patrick Andy on vocals which has never before been pressed to vinyl. Andy recorded many tunes with Jackson over the years, but this ranks up there with the best, and the dub mix on the flip is no joke either. After all, it was mixed at King Tubby's, no less. With Tommy McCook leading the horn section, the credentials rank high on this essential 7".

He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. The single has a killer groove and smooth dub vibes and comes from Lee's upcoming album, which, on this evidence, is going to be a vital pick up when it drops. The man born Harris Lee Seaton put out plenty of them from 1971 until the turn of the new millennium. A-side 'Jah Help Those Who Help Themselves' is an upbeat tune with what was at the time pretty forward looking production. Despite begin a relatively new record, it has all the authenticity and sonic hallmarks of a long-lost 70s classic. Now the best tunes from the album are pressed up to its own 7" by Reload. 'Let The Teardrops Fall' opens with a vocal doused in reverb and some shiny metal synth lines with a hypnotic harmonica taking the lead. 'Let It Go Dub' then gets all stoned and laidback with bottomless dub depths sinking you in deep.

Boss Capone Meets Keith Rowe - "Will You Still Be My Girl Tomorrow" (2:53)
Boss Capone - "Trouble Town" (3:31)
Review: Boss Capone from The Upsessions collaborates with Keith Rowe of the legendary Jamaican duo Keith & Tex on this new release which is well worth hearing. The A-side features a love-inspired rocksteady gem while the flip offers a roots-oriented banger. Boss Capone shared his experience of making this one, saying "I recorded a song called 'My Girl Tomorrow.' I was struggling with it and wanted a voice full of soul. Keith kindly added his vocals, completing the beautiful puzzle." Each copy includes a recycled paper insert and both of these tunes will remind of summer with their earth rhythms and laidback, dusty drums.

House In Dub (3:16)
Review: Only Roots has head into 2014 in busy fashion with several new7"s all dropping to keep dub lovers in a happy mood. This one tackles the delightful Marie Bowie, who was produced by Barry Biggs for 'It's My House'. It's a soul drenched sound with her vocals adding all the lovestruck vibes you need next to plenty of sunny melodies. On the flip is 'House In Dub' which is a killer dub in its own right but if you prefer this without the vocal, you have us worried.

Annette Brissett - "Hard To Find" (3:03)
Wackies Rhythm Force - "Hard To Find" (version) (3:07)
Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Blackness Of Darkness (5:22)
Africa Calling (5:34)
Review: High Note and Dub Store Japan delve into the 1977 album "One Essence" by Cedric "Im" Brooks for their next tasty 7". The saxophonist, composer and musical arranger who fused reggae with jazz, sometimes under the watchful eye of the legendary Coxsone Dodd, was a pioneering force in the evolution of reggae away from its more traditional roots. A-side "Blackness Of Darkness" is a gorgeous cut with a sombre lead trumpet line hanging above bubbly, earthy drums and embellished with golden chords and funky bass that will surely find favour with fans of parties like You're A Melody. "Africa Calling" is a slower, deeper lament with more recognisable reggae rhythms.

Barry Brown - "Them A Fight" (3:43)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Fight Back" (3:08)
Review: This dual release from Studio 16 and Town & Country offers up some exceptional roots and lover's rock fusion sounds that swell the heart in every way. It is the brilliant Barry Brown who steps up to deliver the vocal on the sick early 80s 'Boxing' rhythm. His rhythmic delivery chimes with the natty chords and earthy guitar riffs as the heavyweight bass meanders away down low. On the flip, it's Joe Gibbs & The Professionals who get busy with a dubbed-out version they name 'Fight Back'. Pure fire, so do not sleep.

This new 45rpm features captivating harmonies by the acclaimed USA singer Dhaima, who is a frequent Brown collaborator, and here they combine in superb fashion for a deep roller with buttery vocals. My Kind (7")

Dennis Brown - "My Kind" (3:07)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Ghetto Skank" (3:00)
Review: In the mid-70s, reggae great Dennis Brown was on a creative high with producer Niney propelling him to stardom. However, around this time, he was transitioning back to working with Joe Gibbs, another masterful studio hand who would later cement Brown's superstar status. Gibbs had previously worked with him on the acclaimed Visions album, and this particular track was likely recorded during that era or slightly earlier. Despite its quality, the tune didn't reach the audience it deserved, largely due to Gibbs' lack of UK distribution at the time. For much of the seventies, Joe Gibbs remained sidelined in England, limiting the global impact of his exceptional productions, but reissues like this do a fine job of underlining his importance.

Review: Prophecy make their first foray into the vinyl world with Bunnington Judah & Hornsman Coyote bright together by production by B.Judah and the I Trol Tower crew straight outta Leeds. First up is "Revelation Time", a clean, simple, but effective reggae roller with deep rooted bass way down low. A more horn lead, experimental and late night version follows, as does a prickly dub with hypnotic effects. Various dubs make up the three tracks on the flip, and all offer something essential. Together they all add up to a great first release from Prophecy.

Dreadlocks Time

Junior Byles - "Dreadlocks Time" (2:51)
Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - "Peel Head" (2:49)
Review: The sound of dreadlocks, should there ever be such a thing in the abstract, is best put forward by Junior Byles, the Versatiles' lead member, backed up by a shuffling riddim produced by Errol Thompson and Joe Gibbs. 'Dreadlocks Time' hears a relick of their 'Ba Ba Boom' beat, and is a heartwarming song about self-care and respect for one's own hair, with lyrics: "don't try to stop dreading/natty dread time is a-here/don't lose your cool/respect the rules..." The music is just as measured in feel, and the version is just as "natty", so to speak; there's a very well-timed acapella moment thrown in with the version mix.

The vinyl features her chart-topping hit 'Hurt So Good,' which was produced by the legendary Lee Perry, alongside tracks from her 48-year career. Review: The Magnetics was formed in 2017 and bring a fresh fusion of vintage Jamaican sounds with elements of 60s ska, early reggae and rocksteady all couched din a soul and R&B style. This new 45rpm is another glorious one with the superb vocals of Susan Cardigan bringing the sunshine to 'My Oh My' with its Hammond chords and snaking bass. The flip side is another slow and seductive sound with more classic reggae instrumentals and another standout turn from Cardigan. The dusty production is as authentic as it comes.

Al Campbell - "When Spring Is Around" (2:53)
Ansel Collins - "TBC" (2:49)
Review: We may not all have Common Ground between us, but we can certainly agree on many things when we look back on our vernal roots. This fresh 7" by the UK label homes in on one of the greatest lights to brave the Caribbean sonic Sea, Al Campbell. 'When Spring Is Around' was put out again by the label only last year alongside Ansel Collins on the B, but now a properly labelled version also materialises through their sublabel Jah Fingers. Campbell's canny song is a crackly breeze, detailing the lush renewal of love in the earliest months of the year. Keep your frog's hunkers coiled for this one, so that you can spring on it when Spring springs!

Review: The legendary reggae vocalist Cornell Campbell celebrated the 52nd anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luthur King Jr on 4th April 2021 by getting i the studio. His new EP comprises some fine new interpretations of soul music's most iconic tunes about race, identity and injustice. First up are two versions of Michael Kiwanuka's 'Black Man In A White World', which hit home hard on a nice rolling riddim. On the flip side is 'Outernational Blues' which is a super take on the absolute stone cold Marvin Gaye classic 'Inner City Blues'. Crucial sounds for challenging times.
