Review: Nu-jazz' crossover into broken beat is a liminal and tumultuous border. But Takashi Nakazato, along with his band Galavanters, seem to have succeeded in capturing its lesser-trodden terrain, wherein a live ensemble keeps its tunes danceable, not dubious. 'Toshiafro' is a four track vinyl EP, carefully composed by Nakazato to convey a wholly original foray through his take on modern electronica amnd jazz fusion, from the major-toned Eastern spritzings of 'Akari' to the closing, liquid drum n' bass tumult of 'Amber'.

Review: "Slacking Off" came from a Nassauvians session that found the band coming back together in the studio for the first time after a little break, but totally unprepared. Despite this, they struck real aloha gold, with Hawaiian soul, gently lilting funk and Balearic guitars all making it as summery as you could wish for. Flipside "The Time Is Now" is a previously unreleased AOR island recording with Nassauvians man Tommy Goodwin on guitar and pal Don Lepage on harmonica, and will make you nostalgic for a time and a place never known.

Review: Bristol's tireless and relentless Boca 45 has been turning out all manner of funky b-boy breaks for many years. He's done various albums and countless 7"s and always finds new room whenever he steps out. He kicks off this latest one with an edit of 'Freed From Desire' that has rolling drums, a re-sung vocal that has plenty of passion and some mellow guitar riffs all working it into something fresh. On the backside is the more raw and hard-hitting 'Suki's Revenge' (part 2 - extended mix) which will twist any dance floor.

Review: Tramp Records come at us with an exclusive, ninja-lethal wax, chucked squarely in our direction: the debut 7" single from Natural Life lays down two extra-special instrumental jazz-funk cuts for our pleasure. Never heard before on the tiny label, and with little background info out there to scour (we're pretty sure it's not the same Natural Life as the upbeat funk band active throughout the 1990s), all that's left is to use our ears. Both versions of the eponymous track are essentially an obverse and inverse of the same theme, except for the fact that one is funky in the fast, riveting sense; the other in the slower, sultrier sense. Both are nonetheless rapid, to-the-point heaters, and can be easily deployed and exploited in many a party - or afterparty - context.

Review: Japan's premier jazz funk covers outfit Nautilus are back on the scene with another 7" of those pristine grooves they lay down so well. They've been busy lately, recording the Serendipity album with Lisa Decker and just releasing the Reconnection album amongst other singles and EPs, but once again they've got more beautifully executed music to impart to the world. 'Skyscrapers' rides on a taut breakbeat and features some slinky bass guitar, striking an ever-so-slightly moody tone. 'Another World' is all about the snappy piano hooks, with the band following dutifully behind each melodic passage and winding up in something sweet and funky - as if you expect any less from this band.

Review: Japanese jazz trio Nautilus return for their blitzingly fast jazz fusions, laying down two new ones, 'Virtual Insanity' and 'The War Is A Ghetto'. The former track - originally a Jamiroquai hit - comes as a mega-fast-drummed vocal version with Mizuki Kamata on beltings. The B-sider, meanwhile, comes as a broken-beaty nu-jazz version of War's 'The World Is A Ghetto', providing a clever titular reference and a nice instrumental slinker to match.

Review: New-gen rare groove band Nautilus, operating out of Japan, deliver their latest 7" record, 'Life'. Just two crisp, piquant, fresh, and bubbly uncorkings in sound - 'Life', featuring vocalist Emi Tawata, and the instrumental 'Master Blaster'- are here heard sprayed like buckshot across the stereo system. The former is a candid admission by Tawata of her fear of the dark and ghosts, one which compels the listener to ponder the song's spiritual metaphor - "I'd rather have a piece of toast, watch the evening news" being the lyric of note - while the latter is a comparatively muted four-to-the-floor funk inflammation, held together by a phat but tricksy drum line and overgirding Rhodes.

Review: This year has been packed with new music from Japanese jazz-funk revivalists Nautilus. After a series of well-received 7"s and an album, Refrain, back in May, they now return with two more of their superbly well crafted and musical singles. 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is all splashy cymbals and tight jazz drumming, with noodling Rhodes chords and the icing on the cake - a vocal from Nanami Shimizu. Flip it over for 'Solitude' which is a much more sparse and slow jam where there is room between the beats for the starry-eyed chords and keys to real make their mark. This is golden stuff once more from this fine collective.

Review: Nautilus are a supremely talented jazz funk group from Japan who channel their devotion to all manner of rare grooves into some utterly exquisite tunes. They released their debut album in 2015 on Palette Sounds, and now one of the lead singles has been repressed for the heads. It comprises two cover versions - one of Bob James' 'Nautilus' and the other of Roy Ayers' 'We Live In Brooklyn Baby'. Both cuts stay true to the original masterpieces while letting the players gifts shine through in understated ways. The album was scarce on its initial release so don't expect these to hang around for long.

Review: For those not familiar with the contemporary Japanese funk scene, Nautilus will no doubt be a new name. Led by drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, the trio has spent the last five years offering up killer cover versions of everything from dancefloor jazz staple "Root Down" and Roy Ayers' "We Live In Brooklyn, Baby", to Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" and, appropriately, Bob James' "Nautilus". Here they deliver another killer interpretation of a classic, adding layers of spacey jazz-funk instrumentation and a mind-altering vocoder vocal to the oh-so familiar grooves of Lonnie Liston Smith staple "Expansions". Japanese re-edit king Ryuhei The Man delivers his interpretation on the flip, wisely making more of the brilliant bassline and Sasaki's superb drumming.

There's an endlessly crisp quality to the playing and production on Nautilus records which ensures they land with maximum effect. The A side on this new single is 'We Gettin Down', a bright and breezy confection with some choice talk box action, Rhodes and synths in conversation and sprightly beats. 'Nautical Table' gets a little craftier, dealing in skittering drums and nimble piano without losing that clarity we've come to expect from this highly talented group.

Review: We've become accustomed to hearing Nautilus offer-up authentic, Hammond-rich jazz-funk of the sort associated with such 1970s titans of the genre as Lonnie Liston Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Smith and Herbie Hancock. On 'Caught Up', the flip the script, recruiting vocalist Emi Tawata to help conjure up a wonderfully starry, warming, organic and mood-enhancing slab of R&B-influenced modern soul. Review: Nautilus are a Japanese band named after the iconic Bob James song, which also tells you a lot about their style - which is a mix of modern rare groove that also embodies elements of jazz, funk, disco, soul and hip hop. In just five years they have built up a solid global fan base and this new single explains why. 'Move On Up' (feat Mizuki Kamata) is both filled with golden era acid jazz goodness, but also slick modern jazz tinged grooves that fit right in with the contemporary landscape. ON the flip, 'Track 2' is more slow and late night, a tender basement jam for cuddly dancing.

Review: The story behind this Henry Nelson record is a remarkable one. The Colombian artist recorded the two Latin soul tracks featured on it after moving to Spain in the late 1960s. As no Spanish labels liked what they heard, he was forced to return to South America and the songs were eventually released on an obscure Argentinian label in 1969. Original copies are a genuine rarity, hence this Madmua reissue. A-side 'Al Emor Es Un Bicho' is wonderfully fiery and fierce, with Nelson and his musical collaborators brilliantly fusing elements of psych-rock, funk, soul and British beat music. Flipside 'El Diablo', a confirmed Latin funk stomper blessed with a sing-along chorus, is equally as righteous.

Review: After delivering some killer reissues over the last few years, Mr Bongo's brilliant Brazil 45s series has reached "buy on sight" status. It goes without saying that the label's latest double-header of hard-to-find Brazilian gems is white hot. A-side Neno Exporta Som's impossible-to-find 1971 gem "Deixa A Tristeza", a wild and life-affirming fusion of samba and funk full of fuzzy sax solos, glassy-eyed vocals and heavyweight grooves. Over on the flip you'll find another killer cut from '71: "Sumauma" by MPB star Agnaldo Rayol. Blessed with a great groove and incredible arrangement, it sounds like a Brazilian take on the sort of over-the-top songs used to open James Bond movies in the 1970s (albeit with a bit of samba sunshine thrown in).
