Review: It's a remarkable statistic that Payfone - the long-serving production partnership of Phil Passera and Jimmy Day - have not released an album before, despite building up a killer catalogue of singles over the last 12 years. The vinyl-only Lunch, then, is a genuinely significant release .- and, happily, a rather brilliant one too. Featuring an impressive roll-call of guest vocalists and musicians, it sees them deliver six excellent riffs on their analogue-rich, hybrid house/Balearic/nu-disco sound. The plentiful highlights include the dubbed-out, low-slung and atmospheric opener 'Movin' On', the infectious, spaced-out boogie of 'Joan of Arc' (whose chorus will be stuck in your head for days), sensual jazz-funk jam 'Spend The Night' and the warming, sun-soaked delight that is 'Pony Bar'.

Review: Marking its 25th anniversary, this gem of a reissue reminds us why it's considered a landmark in the evolution of Balearic and Latin-infused house music. Building on the ambient sophistication of Meridian, Since Then sees Pooley embrace a brighter, more joyful palette that is steeped in Latin rhythms, breezy island instrumentation and a deep love for the dancefloor. Albeit a sandy dancefloor. The self-titled opener and single, 'Since Then', is a sun-kissed blend of balearic house and relaxed ambient textures, offering an inviting welcome into the album's glowing soundscape. 'Bay Of Plenty' drips with tropical charm, its lush chords and rich horn section infusing a magical emotionality, while 'Venasque' is an energetic blast of street funk, Latin pop and club urgency. Review: This clear wax edition feels like an invitation into Worcestershire-born global traveller Will Holland's inner circle i not just as a selector but as a connector of people, scenes and sonic microhistories. Across the two LPs, his DJing reveals the subtle hand of a musician: textured, tempo-flexible, deeply in tune with the artists he features. JJ Whitefield's 'The Mind Is A Palace' and Alfa Mist's slow-burner 'In My Defence' lay the introspective groundwork, while The Heliocentrics and Dialect bring fuzz and abstraction into view. Side B pivots to percussive warmth, from JKriv's whistle-led 'Pifeiro Malandro' to Holland's own dusty 'Twang', before the humid swagger of Frente Cumbiero and a tripped-out remix of 'Theme From Selva' usher in Side C. Things then spiral toward the club, with 'Eko Eko', 'Throw Dat Azz' and 'Scintille' all bringing punch and release. The final stretch, featuring The Maghreban, Meridian Brothers and Sobredosis, casts a glowing ambiguity over the mix i just like Holland's sets, it ends not in resolution, but in feeling.

Review: After 20 years of soulful and authentic rock & roll blues, Eli Paperboy Reed definitely had a right to celebrate. Originally recorded in a basement in Allston, Massachusetts, completely live onto and direct to analogue tape in mono, this collection was first released on a limited run of 300 CDs, self-released, and mostly sold by hand on the streets of Cambridge, close to Harvard University. Now redone, pressed-up and polished for 'proper release', you get all 12 original tracks and another 14 that never saw the light of day before. Four of those were recorded at the time of the others, the remainder come from a radio session the following year. All of them are incredible, and prove that it's not only the Deep South that can make these raw and unflinchingly honest sounds.

Both seasoned producers - Miller with credits for SZA and Whitney, Gold known for work alongside Makaya McCraven - they trade virtuosity for vibe here. "Recording production is really complicated," he says, "but it all boils down to what kind of room the listener feels they're standing in." Not quite autobiographical, it's a record built on the long, unresolved tension between what changes and what doesn't.

Review: Texas-based Ben Hixon and Atlanta's Stefan Ringer collide on this new split EP for the increasingly vital Dolfin label. It is Ringer who starts with a tight, grinding groove on 'Moving Walkway' with spoken word snippets and kaleidoscopic synth sequences bringing a trippy and unusual energy to the menacing bass. His 'PLGLY' (SR Big Room mix) is then a heavy beatdown with synths that snap and crack while jazzy percussion and dark vocals bring extra character. Review: Originally released in 2008, Manifesto captured Canada's The Souljazz Orchestra in full stride i locked into deep Afrobeat, but stretching further into spiritual jazz, militant funk and raw soul. It's one of their most focused records, recorded live with no overdubs, and it still hits hard. Tracks like 'Parasite' and 'People, People' feel especially relevant now, tackling inequality, media spin and class struggle with sharp lyrics and a driving sense of purpose. There's fire in the horns, urgency in the rhythm, but also a feeling of hope and collective strength. The band has offered plenty of highlights since, but Manifesto remains a standout i lean, direct and full of intent.

There have only been reissues since, but now the group returns with their first new album in 15 years. It features 13 fresh studio tracks from the avant-pop pioneers who revitalise their sounds with signature motorik grooves and adventurous new textures. Announced via a 7" single and cryptic word search sent to uber fans, it features guest appearances from Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and others, all adding rich layers. Lead single 'Aerial Troubles' signifies the playful experimentation and sly sophistication you would expect from this band, this effort feeling warmly familiar yet thrillingly new.

Review: After countless reissues, Stereolab delight fans with their first new album in nearly 15 years, following 2010's Not Music. The French/British band - led by Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadie - are well known for their tendency to lean towards left field, adventurous sonic experiments, but have a wide spectrum and from time to time are not shy in indulging their love of pop with melodies that stick. Laetitia Sadie can sing the phone book - to the level of a Gruff Rhys - and on the single 'Aerial Troubles' evokes her Welsh peer. With the band's influence seemingly inextinguishable, chances are the aftermath of this album release will see Stereolab's stock rise massively as they sound like they've hit their stride and not let the long gap between new albums faze them.

Review: Imagine you're in for a long car journey and can only take one Suede album, which one do you take? Well, this is the one, really. Reissued as an expanded 3CD set, it features all their best b-sides from the hallowed first three albums (Suede (1993), Dog Man Star (1994) and Coming Up (1996), plus a further 19 B-sides and extra tracks from 1999 to 2023. It's the extra, latter day era numbers that are getting a standalone release on vinyl for Record Store Day as Sci-Fi Lullabies Vol.2, but with this CD set you get everything lumped in together as a bumper package. The tracklist is ridiculous: 'The Sadness in You, the Sadness in Me' from 2022 is a power ballad that could stir the most stoic of hearts. 'Another No One' is a slow, achingly beautiful and melancholy number and 'Europe Is Our Playground' - clearly written pre-Brexit - celebrates a golden Schengen era: "From Spain to Camber Sands/Europe is our playground."

Review: First released in 1971, Garra captures Brazillian legend Marcos Valle at his most playful and politically subversive i a sun-soaked record full of breezy melodics, cerebral arrangements and beneath-the-surface protest. Reissued by Spanish imprint Vampi Soul, it sounds as compellingly bittersweet as ever. Valle blends samba, soul and psychedelia into something smooth but quietly radical, with lyrics (penned by his brother Paulo Sergio) touching on everything from consumerism to cultural identity, often disguised as love songs. Tracks like 'Jesus Meu Rei' and 'Com Mais de 30' retain all their sonic charm and tropical levity, while 'Black Is Beautiful' stands out for its politicism as much as its poignancy. The arrangements are rich but never overly busy, balancing Rhodes keys, strings and rhythm with ample airiness. Garra is a magnificent reminder of how music, when done right, has the power to elevate discourse, challenge the establishment, and joyfully celebrate unity.

Review: A new compilation from Spiritual Jazz shows the genre's predisposition to thrive despite heavy political oppression, with underworld eminents euphonating their radical music despite a hard immuring behind the Iron Curtain, which represented the gash between East and West during the Cold War. Contemporary jazz and European folk collide on the first of a two-parter record here, reflecting muted but reassuring sonic utterances sounding against oppression, a somewhat unspeakable sentiment whipping across the Eastern Bloc of the 50s and 60s. Vagif Mustafa Zade, an Azerbaijani pianist, and the Manfred Ludwig Sextett, from the same era, are only two such featured artists; they helped push the embrace hard bop and modal, and the boundaries of what was permissible under the regime.

Review: The Iron Curtain, a politically charged term of the 20th century, symbolised the divide between East and West. Winston Churchill famously referenced this metaphor, describing how an "Iron Curtain" descended upon Europe, obscuring the actions behind it. This two-parter record from Jazzman does the impossible, lifting the curtain through sound alone, representing jazz's ablation of political and cultural barriers, as it flourished in Soviet states and exposed the contradictory histories of Soviet jazz, from the 1960s to the 80s. Despite Cold War tensions and MADs, the Soviets didn't hold their breath for a second, embracing the jazz modernisms of hard bop, modal, Latin jazz and Eastern folk-jazz. The resilience of jazz artists during an era of geopolitical conflict thus offers a sprightly affirmation of spirituality and formal reinvention, in the face of adversity.

Review: Of all the terms here, the one used at the time was most frequently new rave and it would be an unthinkable scene without the Klaxons, so it's great to see them make the tracklist, alongside top tier like-minded acts. Bloc Party are one of the best indie bands to remix ever and the version of their best song 'Banquet' is a banger. Elsewhere, LCD Soundsystem's most catchy number 'Tribulations' is a dead cert in terms of getting people off their seats. One of the hyped bands of the era who deserve recognition are We Have Band and it's a shrewd move to include them. Electroclash heroes Fischerspooner had signed to Minsitry of Sound for L2 million around the time 'Emerge' came out and were easily one of the hottest dance acts around, and make for another cracking addition to this seriously high quality retrospective.

Review: In January 2025, Al Wootton visited Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio, which is home to a rare archive of vintage drum machines. Once there, he recorded the unique rhythms and quirks of these machines and captured their raw character. Back in the UK, he transformed those recordings through processing and layering to create this new EP, Rhythm Archives. The result is a stripped-back but impactful exploration of rhythm that draws from industrial, dub, post-punk and proto-techno influences. Review: Adam Winchester and Laurie Osborne (probably still best known as Appleblim) are Wrecked Lightship and they have an inventive approach to dub, breaks and bass. Their work creates an immersive world full of rich, atmospheric textures and the latest example of that is Drained Strands, a new album for Peak Oil full of fragmented, genre-blurring sounds. The six-tracker is full of experimentation and new ideas from the off. 'Delinquent Spirits' for example is a jumble of jungle breaks and vast basslines with minimal percussion, 'Reeling Mist' is warm, blissed out dub and 'Somnium Sands' is an eerie and evocative world of synth designs and industrial decay.

Review: The first Wu-Tang release to feature all nine living members in over a decade, this new full-length is a reminder that when aligned, the Staten Island collective still operate on a level of their own. The production is raw and cinematic i heavy with martial arts samples, bassline grime and dusty soul flips i while the verses come sharp, tight and unshowy. No gimmicks, just business. 'Sucker Free City' and 'Mandingo' come in swinging, full of tight drum programming and rugged, overlapping verses. 'Roar Of The Lion' and 'Shaoilin Vs Lama' lean into the classic kung-fu mythology, with a sense of pace that recalls their earliest work. 'Cleopatra Jones' and 'Dolemite' are funk-fuelled standouts, where the crew's storytelling and timing land in full form. 'Let's Do It Again' and 'Trouble-Man' close with a tone of reflection that cuts through the grime. It's a new release, but also a reunion that doesn't feel like a legacy act i more like a sharpened return. No attempt to modernise, no need to. Just nine distinct voices, still bouncing off each other with control and character. A serious addition to the catalogue i and one for the heads.
