Review: Verve Records presents Louis In London, the last great performance by one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, Louis Armstrong. Recorded live at the BBC in July 2, 1968 - weeks after the artist broke the charts with 'What A Wonderful World', which has persisted in the popular sphere most notably due to its infamous inclusion in the Toy Story repertoire - this 13-track performance also hears stellar renditions of strong-armed Armstrong greats such as 'Hello, Dolly!', all performed with his renowned band The All-Stars.

Review: Louis Armstrong had an unparalleled impact on American popular music. Verve Records now celebrates his legacy with an all-new collection featuring his greatest hits and most timeless recordings. This release complements Louis In London, which highlights the influence on jazz of a man known for his joyful presence and who once said he was on a mission to spread happiness - this collection underscores that purpose. His contributions shaped the course of music history and that can be heard here in these gloriously catchy and indelible jazz sounds, many of which are well loved by even those without a passion for jazz.

Review: Baker's Holiday is a 1965 album that sees trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker paying homage to the legendary Billie Holiday. Released now on Verve, the album features Baker's signature mellow trumpet solos complemented by his occasional vocals. He is supported by a full saxophone section and a four-piece rhythm group, including renowned pianist Hank Jones, while colorful arrangements by Jimmy Mundy enrich the listening experience. The album consists of ten songs associated with Lady Day, many of which Baker had not recorded before. This classic album is now part of Verve's Acoustic Sounds vinyl reissue series, which aims to deliver audiophile-grade versions of historic jazz records. Each title in the series is mastered from original analogue tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and packaged in high-quality gatefold sleeves with tip-on jackets. Baker's Holiday exemplifies Baker's talent and serves as a beautiful tribute to one of jazz's most influential figures.

Review: From the opening notes of the iconic 'Alamode,' this album bursts with beauty. It features the first sextet lineup of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and showcases a young Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bobby Timmons on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass. The band relentlessly drives the pace with each track, making a powerful impact throughout and for that rowans it became one of many Art Blakey classics. Review: Recorded in 1962, Coleman Hawkins' quartet featuring Tommy Flanagan on piano, Major Holley on bass and Eddie Locke on drums delivers a captivating blend of upbeat tunes and smooth ballads. Tracks like 'Go Li'l Liza' and 'Swingin' Scotch' provide lively moments while a trio of ballads, including the recently and sadly passed legend that is Quincy Jones' 'Quintessence,' showcase the group's versatility. This Verve By Request edition is pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Records in Detroit so as usual offers a premium listening experience that captures the timeless essence of Hawkins' legendary sound.

Joao Donato is one of the most well known and prolific stars of Brasil's MPB (which is short for "musica populera brasileira") scene. He has toped several highly sought of albums and is still turning them out today despite already having assured his legacy. A Bad Donato is something of a move away from his Brazilian bossa nova roots - instead the album, which was recorded in LA, is electric and eclectic with funk, psychedelic pop and groovy Fender Rhodes driven sounds. This reissue on Verve By Request comes on nice heavyweight 180g vinyl with classics like 'The Frog' and 'Lunar Tune' still sounding fresh.

Review: A standout 1958-1959 recording by Johnny Hodges, Side by Side marked his continued solo work after taking the bold decision to leave the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra. This album harks back to the small-group sessions of the 1930s but with a twist as Ellington's absence on several tracks meant Billy Strayhorn stepped in on piano. Joining Hodges are jazz legends like Jo Jones, Roy Eldridge and Harry 'Sweets' Edison, who all add colour to the varied collection, which has been newly remastered for Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series. As a follow-up to 1959's Back to Back: Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges Play the Blues, it is another gem from the noted alto saxophonist.

Review: Johnny Hartman's I Just Dropped By to Say Hello, now reissued on 180-gram vinyl via Verve By Request, is a testament to his exceptional vocal artistry. Known for his deep, velvety baritone, Hartman delivers a collection of intimate ballads with impeccable enunciation and emotional depth. Standouts include 'Wee Small Hours of the Morning' and 'Sleepin' Bee', where Hartman's voice is smooth, relaxed and rich, free from the harshness that can plague lesser pressings. Recorded by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, this album benefits from his masterful engineering, with every nuance of Hartman's voice and the supporting ensemble sounding pristine. The stellar musicianship includes Hank and Elvin Jones on piano and drums, Milt Hinton on bass and guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall. Illinois Jacquet's tenor sax adds further texture to several tracks. Often overshadowed by Hartman's work with John Coltrane, this album stands on its own as a jazz vocal masterpiece. The warm, natural sound of this reissue makes it an essential addition to any collection, demonstrating the enduring magic of Hartman's voice and Van Gelder's brilliant production.

Review: Bill Henderson may not have been a widely known jazz singer, but his 1963 album proves he deserved more recognition. Backed by the exceptional Oscar Peterson Trioifeaturing Ed Thigpen on drums and Ray Brown on bassiHenderson more than holds his own. His rich, expressive voice brings new depth to classics like 'All or Nothing at All' and 'You Are My Sunshine' which font his unique style and vast emotional range. Rather than being overshadowed by his legendary accompanists, Henderson rises to the occasion which helps make this a standout gem in vocal jazz.

Review: Billie Holiday's late career 1958 LP through Verve Records caught the legendary singer at a relatively intimate stage: substance abuse compounded financial difficulties, which imposed a toll on her already turbulent personal life, and Holiday's once-pure, all-powerful voice was showing signs of wear. A title like All Or Nothing At All would certainly seem to express the captive intensity of an industry that "breaks" artists in more ways than one, and despite the mixed reviews on release, this small combo-backed record is of one artist's broken but still functioning sensitivity. With Harry "Sweets" Edison and saxophonist Ben Webster, Holiday croons over 12 tracks, recorded over five sessions in 1956 and 1957, showcasing a more restrained vocal style that pierces clearly through and despite pharyngeal ills.

Review: Billie Holiday's 1957 recording stands as a timeless gem in jazz history, showing the unparalleled talent of Lady Day alongside a stellar ensemble. With luminaries like Ben Webster on tenor saxophone, Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, and Jimmy Rowles on piano, Holiday is supported by some of the finest musicians of the era. This audiophile-grade reissue from the Verve/Universal Music Enterprises Acoustic Sounds Series ensures that Holiday's brilliance is preserved in its most authentic form. Mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the album offers a pristine listening experience. The musicianship on display is exceptional, with each member of the ensemble contributing to the rich tapestry of sound. Hubbard originals feature and showcase notable musicians such as Curtis Fuller on trombone, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, Cedar Walton on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. This release stands out in Hubbard's fine discography and highlights Wayne Shorter's exceptional arranging skills, all now pressed up to 180-gram vinyl at Third Man in Detroit.

Review: Verve By Request repress Elvin Jones and Richard Davis' Heavy Sounds, one of the few recorded collaborations between the drummer and bassist ever laid to disc. The title is debatable if not misleading, as we'd wager that most listeners would typify this record as decidedly 'light' in feel. Recorded for Impulse in 1967, a session originally intended to be a trio date morphed into an 11 1/2-minute duet, on the album Summertime, between drummer Jones and bassist Davis, after the guitarist did not appear. The following day, saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene joined in to round out the rest of the cuts including 'Elvin's Guitar Blues', which features Jones' only recorded guitar performance.

Review: At just 22, Samara Joy is still rather young to be kicking it in the jazz world. It's a genre that requires life to be lived somewhat before real emotions can be distilled into the mic. However, here she makes her Verve debut and showcases a voice that evokes great legends of the genre like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her phrasing, tone and vocal control place her among these icons despite her youth and Samara's voice, already rich with timeless elegance, carries the weight of jazz's history while still feeling remarkably fresh and exciting. With this remarkable debut, she is surely poised to become a defining figure in jazz music.

Review: Samara Joy's latest album, recorded at the iconic Van Gelder Studios in February 2024, shows her growth and artistic direction. Captured over three days, the album features her touring band of young, rising jazz musicians, delivering a collection that blends timeless standards with new originals. For the first time, Samara delves into lyric writing, adding a personal touch to the album. Her remarkable voice shines throughout, accompanied by tight-knit arrangements and performances from her band, reflecting the camaraderie and energy they've built on the road. The album serves as a studio snapshot of their live performances, bringing to life the musical community she's fostered with her peers. Since her self-titled debut in 2021, Samara Joy has garnered widespread attention. Her second album, Linger Awhile, hit number one on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. With this new release, Samara continues to fulfill her vast promise with her future potential as a leading voice in jazz.

This shift in label mirrors the album's approach, melding hard bop, r&b, pop and Latin influences into a refined yet emotionally charged recording. Stripped of excess, the interplay between piano, bass and drums offer a taut yet expressive foundation, allowing the lead instrument's voice to alternate between fiery intensity and delicate introspection. The album's compositions reflect the artist's expansive range, moving from simmering blues to modal explorations, each piece showcasing a unique facet of his musical identity. At its heart, a deeply affecting ballad stands out, its after-hours melancholy that hits all the right notes. In contrast, rhythm-driven pieces pulse with kinetic energy, bursting with sharp phrasing and infectious grooves. 'Fallout', tinged with bossa nova influence, juxtaposes playfulness with restraint, while 'Alfie' reimagines a beloved pop standard, reshaping its familiar contours into something bold and brassy. A vital document of an artist stretching his reach, bridging accessibility with deep musicianship. The balance of exuberance and restraint, structure and improvisation, makes it an engaging listen. For those that know it well, an underappreciated yet essential piece of his music catalogue.

Review: Originally released in 2016, now reissued All for You (A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio) by Diana Krall remains a timeless tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole Trio. In this album, Krall masterfully blends her piano and vocal talents, evoking the spirit of Cole without directly mimicking him. Standout tracks include the lively 'I'm an Errand Girl for Rhythm,' 'Frim Fram Sauce,' and 'Hit That Jive Jack,' where her playful energy shines. Russell Malone's guitar work adds a rich layer, particularly in his standout solos. Krall's interpretations of ballads like 'I'm Through With Love' and 'If I Had You' reveal an influence reminiscent of Shirley Horn, adding depth and emotion. Supported by bassist Paul Keller and joined by pianist Benny Green and percussionist Steve Kroon on select tracks, the album's sound is both consistent and intimate, perfectly suited to Krall's style. Without the orchestral embellishments of her later work, this album highlights her jazz roots. All for You stands as one of Krall's finest achievements and a proper tribute to an all time legend.

Formed by nine musicians from Mexico, Panama, Cuba and Puerto Rico with Benny Velarde at the helm, the group blended their rich cultural backgrounds with the soulful and experimental music scene of the Bay Area during that period. This unique mix created a joyful, energetic sound that still lures you in to this day, which is why this mini-classic gets reissued as part of the Verve By Request series.

Review: 1997's Slow Traffic to the Right found Bennie Maupin navigating between cerebral jazz and deep funk with style and ease. Though generally known for his abstract leanings and serious musical demeanour, here he showed a lighter side - not least because he is actually smiling on the album cover - while diving into grooves shaped by his time with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. With help from rhythm masters like Mike Clark and Paul Jackson, Maupin swaps out ECM austerity for signature Oakland bounce, so tracks like 'It Remains to Be Seen' and 'You Know the Deal' excel with newfound swagger without abandoning his jazz roots. It's a compelling pivot into accessible, funky and smart jazz soul.

Review: Recorded in 1964 at the great Café Au Go Go in Greenwich Village - just months after Astrud Gilberto’s 'Girl from Ipanema' became a Top Five pop hit - this live album from the Stan Getz Quartet in live euphony with the Brazilian vocal phenom marks a pivotal moment in both musicians’ careers. Steering away from her original, traditional Brazilian bossa nova, Gilberto embraced a North American jazz influence here. A young Gary Burton is heard on vibraphone, with Kenny Burrell also on guitar, Gene Cherico on bass, and Joe Hunt on drums - some further percussive substitutions by Helcio Milito (drums) and Chuck Israels (bass) appear in later sets. At the time, Astrud was not a professional singer, but she was asked to sing with Getz because her spouse, fellow bossa nova chanteur João Gilberto, was reluctant to sing in English.

Review: In April 1998, shortly after winning the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Performance with their debut album Habana, Roy Hargrove's Crisol entered a studio in Guadalupe to record their second. Until now though, that album - Grande-Terre - has remained unreleased. Featuring a stellar lineup of Hargrove's longtime collaboratorsitrombonist Frank Lacy, pianist Larry Willis and drummer Willie Jones IIIiGrande-Terre captures the essence of Hargrove's dynamic playing and masterful compositions, showcasing the band's powerful synergy and distinctive Latin jazz style. Hargrove's sudden passing in 2018 leaves us to ponder what further accomplishments this innovative band might have achieved had they continued to evolve their groundbreaking approach. Grande-Terre not only highlights Hargrove's exceptional talent but also serves as a poignant reminder of what was lost with his untimely death.

To John (20:35)
Review: Finally reissued for its 50th anniversary, Love In Us All is a cosmic, uncompromising statement from legendary jazz cat Pharoah Sanders. This vital piece of the free jazz canon was released as his final Impulse! album and starts with 'Love Is Everywhere' which radiates transcendent beauty with layered horns, cascading piano and a repeated vocal mantra evoking the spirit of Coltrane's seminal 'A Love Supreme'. The flip, For John' is raw, chaotic and a furious outpouring of free jazz energy. Long out of print but here remastered, this essential release showcases Sanders' vision in its most fearless, spiritual form.

Review: Pharoah Sanders recorded Thembi in the winter of 1970-71, amid sessions with Alice Coltrane that would culminate in her seminal Journey In Satchidananda album. The same profound spirituality that imbued Coltrane's masterpiece with an aura of serene majesty also permeates Thembi. One of the standout tracks, 'Astral Traveling,' originated from a serendipitous encounter with a Fender Rhodes electric piano. Upon arriving at the California studio, while his bandmates set up their instruments, Sanders noticed the piano and, driven by curiosity, began experimenting with its sounds. This track, with its ethereal quality and innovative use of the electric piano, captures the exploratory spirit and transcendent quality that define Thembi, making it a cornerstone of Sanders' discography and the blueprint to the serendipitous magic of musical experimentation. Thembi offers something very unique for the time in jazz music.

Review: An uncompromising statement in the landscape of free jazz and released in 1968, the album's title track is an 18-minute tour de force. A relentless exorcism of sound driven by Shepp's feverish tenor sax and an army of percussionists, including Beaver Harris, Norman Connor, Ed Blackwell, Frank Charles and Dennis Charles. The piece never loses momentum, a hypnotic Afro-rhythmic foundation over which Shepp's saxophone howls, growls and shrieks with raw, untamed fury. The arrival of Martin Banks and Michael Zwerin's trumpets in the final minutes momentarily grounds the chaos before it collapses in exhaustion. The additional tracks take a more traditional approach, contrasting the firestorm of the title piece. Yet, Magic of Ju-Ju remains a defining moment in Shepp's career, marking his transition into deeper explorations of African heritage, gospel, blues and contemporary r&b. The album's title, drawn from Vietnam-era GI slang, hints at Shepp's engagement with the social and political turbulence of the time. Reissued as part of the Verve By Request series on 180-gram vinyl, this is a vital milestone in Shepp's radical, boundary-pushing career.

Review: Nina Simone's 1964 album stands as a powerful testament to her unwavering support for the Civil Rights movement, marking one of her most personal and impactful releases during her time with Philips Records. The album captures Simone at her most fervent and fearless, channeling her artistry into a profound expression of social consciousness. Unlike some of her other works, where orchestration sometimes overshadowed her voice, this gem benefits from a minimalistic yet vibrant jazz quartet, which perfectly complements her bold vocal delivery. Tracks like 'Old Jim Crow,' 'Pirate Jenny,' 'Go Limp,' and the titular 'Mississippi Goddam' emerge as potent declarations of African-American pride and resistance, making this album a landmark in the intersection of music and activism. Simone also revisits more traditional material with grace, including her timeless rendition of 'I Loves You, Porgy' and the soulful 'Don't Smoke in Bed.' Verve's Acoustic Sounds series honors this historic album with a meticulously crafted vinyl reissue. Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, the album is packaged in a deluxe gatefold sleeve, offering an audiophile experience that preserves the integrity of Simone's revolutionary work.

The sixth full-length from the incomparable Nina Simone was originally released in 1966 via Phillips Records, and was predominantly comprised of several recordings left over from sessions over the two previous years. Considered by many to be the jazz/soul goddess' most seminal work; the album features some of her most timeless renditions and contributions such as 'Lilac Wine' (later covered by Jeff Buckley), 'Wild Is The Wind' (covered by David Bowie), her definitive version of 'Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair', as well as the somewhat controversial 'Four Women', which was banned by New York jazz radio station WLIB due to their ironic misinterpreting of her skewing of black female stereotypes as racist.

The album was originally released in 1959 and featured a lineup including trumpeter Roy Eldridge, guitarist Les Spann, pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jo Jones. It has many timeless standards like 'Time After Time' and Ellington's 'In a Mellow Tone' along with three original Webster compositions, all of which have been transferred from the original analogue tapes and remastered. The album served somewhat as a tribute to Lester Young, a tenor master from the same era who had died under a month before the session.
