Review: The latest release on Belgian label Kraak (responsible for last year's killer Es double album!) comes from Silvester Anfang, who by all accounts appears to be a Satanist. Don't run for the hills yet though, this isn't your usual death metal fare, instead Silvester prefers to show his love and respect for the dark lord of doom by making instrumental free-folk. Yep this is Sunburned Hand of the Man gone Rosemary's Baby, this is Animal Collective with a burning cross. Blending a droning instrumental backbone with improvised percussion and twanging guitars the band creates the most haunting and addictive soundscapes.

Abstract Poverty
Review: "Snow Blind Avalanche" is a completely different album compared with "A Rock In The Snow" also being released on Important though the two records were made during the same sessions. This vinyl only release is limited to 1000 copies with the first 200 on snow-white vinyl. Artwork by C Spencer Yeh. Liner notes from Wolf Eyes brother John Olson aka Johnny Coors. The Flaherty/Corsano/Yeh power trio have emerged on album with a dual format/dual release for Important. "Snow Blind Avalanche" finds the Flaherty/Corsano/Yeh in more abstract free dimensions with Yeh's presence in the sound even more firmly established. Recorded as the snow fell. No overdubs. Live in studio. Free-noise-punk-jazz with bent-sick-burning vocals. Amen.

Review: Magic C brings you Sex magik: Histoire De Lilith Von Sirius' from Jad Wio. The legendary French rock-goth-new wave icon from the 80's makes his come back with this brilliant lp. Some of you might remember the total classic tracks like 'Precilla' or 'Contact' that created quite a stir at the beginning of the 90's, taking all alternative French scenes by storm, and reached cult status ever since. This is his big come back with huge potential tracks such as 'Das Ist...'.

Living In The Ghetto
Where Is That Love
Review: Taking its name from Jezreel, the Biblical city founded by the tribe of Issachar, where God is said to have cursed Ahab for his greed, this singing duo's debut Wackies album is steeped in rasta spirituality. Clive Davis and Christopher Harvey step forward from the backing line on innumerable Sugar Minott sessions for example and into the company of the great JA vocal combos of the late seventies. As at home with Viceroys-style harmonies as with traditional impressions and doowop-derived flourishes; as comfortable riding Channel One-style steppers as with more laid-back, lovers grooves. Dug in behind them is drummer Jah Scotty's New Breed Band - also known as the Reckless Breed - falling between the Sylvester Brothers and Itopia as Wackies in-house crew. Included in the line-up this time are two of Lloyd Barnes' sons, Bob and Shaan. Appearing as Reggae Jerry, guitarist Jerry Harris is on top form, and as Jerry Hitster he contributes some startling keyboards (alongside Sylvesters' old-boy Roy Robertson), not least in the opening bars. Most of the rhythms are one-offs, though Roman Soldiers is the militant first outing of Natures Dub, and Living In The Ghetto is Kicking Scott from the same album. (On top, the sleeve features vintage reggae typesetting by Leslie A Moore, LAM Graphics Int.) This is a showcase LP, with all tracks extending into inventive dubs. Arrangements are by Lloyd Barnes and Jah Hamma, aka Prince Douglas, who also work the mixing desk.

Joane Skyler - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Some Truths - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Miles Whittaker - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Mark Fell - "12 Minute Excerpt"
Review: Germany's Travel By Goods label has put together a rather special looking double EP by some of the most influential minds in electronic music with contributions from Demdike Stare man Miles Whittaker, Ralph 'Some Truths' Cumbers, Mark Fell and enigmatic NTS host and musician Joane Skyler. Each of the four artists is granted a side of a heavyweight 12" to do their thing and the results are as cutting edge as you'd expect. Drones, glitchiness and samples are the basis for sonic exploration here with Skyler, Whittaker and Some Truths all largely opting for the otherworldly approach. Fell meanwhile injects some of his expertly cultivated off kilter approach by chucking in a barrel of tumbling kicks and percussion shots. Class.

Review: Wah Wah presents another acid folk delicacy from The Village Thing catalogue. 'The Sun Also Rises' was recorded by Graham Hemingway (vocals, guitar)
and Anne Hemingway (vocals, dulcimer, glockenspiel, vibes, percussion). They were occasionally joined by John Turner (string bass, finger-picked & with a bow)
and Andy Legget (whistle on one of the songs). It features an amazing tapestry of acid folk sounds with great male/female vocal harmonies. On the sources of this
record you will hear echoes of The Incredible String Band, Comus, C.O.B and Tir Na Nog, but of course delivered with the own personality of this Cardiff duo, very
hippie sounding with a very trippy atmosphere. The album was originally released in 1970, and our reissue will include one bonus track not on the original release,
taken from a 1972 Village Thing sampler. Comes in beautifully reproduced artwork in nice matt finish. Not only a top listener, but also a beautiful addition to your
acid folk collection.

Review: It's nearly three years since we last heard from !!!, owners of the strangest name in dance music (it is, of course, pronounced !!!). In that time, the now veteran band's members have pursued a variety of intriguing solo projects, with Justin Van Der Volgen making his mark as a DJ and producer of seriously good disco edits. The brilliantly named Thr!!!er (see what they did etc.) is undeniably looser and groovier than previous efforts, with their trademark low-slung, punk-funk bass being used to good effect on tracks that range from LCD Soundsystem-ish house-influenced anthems ("Slyd") and Prince-influenced disco (the delightfully summery "One Girl/One Boy"), to West Coast stoner funk-rock ("Californiyeah") and Rick James style hustlin' disco-funk ("Except Death").

The first single from it, 'Storm Around the World,' features Sink Ya Teeth's Maria Uzor and the band explained it was "originally an acid workout about parents who leave on tour," became much more. Expect the album to be a diverse affair packed with dance floor moments but also plenty of more spare sounds that allow the world play to shine through. Fittingly, this one - the band's ninth album - comes pressed on nice blue wax.

Review:
American dance punks !!! won over plenty of fans and critics alike with their second studio album. It was hailed as a brave collision of agit-pop, indie and dance rock that was driven by funky rhythms and post punk attitudes. Two singles 'Hello? Is This Thing On?' and 'Pardon My Freedom' both performed well and it was said at the time that "the album brings some real substance to dance music" (just don't let any dance music fans hear that, though.) The slicker sound of this second album had more disco influences and plenty of trance inducing builds all made it extra electric.

Review: Sahko continues to deliver new vinyl pressings of lauded, in-demand items from the bulging back catalogue of sadly departed Finnish experimentalist Mika Vaino. The latest to get the treatment is Vaino's 2008 set Oleva, his fifth solo outing under the alternative O alias. The album remains one of Vaino's most magical, in part because it counters his usual icy, creepy and sometimes intense experimental sound with ambient, IDM and rhythm-driven pieces that variously draw on electro and industrial sounds. It contains some genuinely stunning moments of both darkness and light, including a number of widescreen epics that sound like they were tailor-made for black and white, European art-house movies.

Review: To coincide with the release of the remix version of the 100 Gecs album, the St Louis-raised duo of the same name has decided to reissue their much-lauded 2019 debut. As critics pointed out at the time (and have done ever since), it's one of the most breathless and imaginative electro-pop albums of recent times, with the pair excitedly mixing and matching elements of hip-hop, grime, trap, synth-wave, synth-pop, dubstep, IDM, experimental electronica, grubby pop-punk, gabber and a myriad of other styles, all served with lashings of vocals put through an auto-tune filter. It's utterly bonkers, to be honest, but undeniably thrilling.

Review: Last year's self-titled debut album from 100 Gecs was widely described as a wild and eccentric electro-pop masterpiece, with particular praise heaped on the duo's ability to smash together elements from a multitude of disparate electronic styles (both old and new) and somehow make it work. 100 Gecs and the Tree of Clues builds on this excitable madness by providing a freshly remixed version of the set featuring a ridiculous number of high-profile guests (including Fall Out Boy, and Charli XCX), even more vibrant sonic colours, and more blink-and-you-miss them audio references. The result is a breathlessly quick-fire set of madcap electro-pop convulsions that will make your head spin and keep you coming back for more.

Review: Dylan Brady and Laura Les are 100 Gecs and 10000 is their much anticipated second album. It comes four years after their 2019 breakout debut includes previously released tunes 'mememe' which is a colourful mix of ska-inflected verses, thrash guitars and wonky synths and 'Doritos & Fritos', a more 90s styled alt rock anthem unlike anything else the band has done. A world tour is to follow the release of this album and is the natural next step for this artfully unhinged and impossible-to-predict collective who make some of the most outsider pop sounds around right now.

Review: 1000 Kings debut right here with this LP for the Jazz re:freshed imprint, and we just love bands that come out with an album as their first port of call. Thankfully, not only is this an album but it's a painfully cool one at that; the talented outfit take their own spin on jazz, giving a new meaning to the term 'free'. Opener "The Drop", is fast and relentless in its approach, and a sign of what's to come - a raucous, moody collection of high-pace jazz-dance tracks that are the reincarnation of those famous Dingwalls nights from back in the day...which seem to be on a rising trend nowadays. Wicked stuff. Recommended.

Working neatly as a consistent whole and as a collection of dancefloor ticklers, 1000 Names have maintained a great balance throughout as we're treated to gems like the slo-mo juke joint "Another Beaten Sunday", the cosmic eyelash flutters of downtempo disco cut "Enter Jules Verne", the sludgy, far-out two-step of "Hand-Me-Down-Brain" and the life-affirming rusty-synth chord blasts on "Streets".

From the 1200 Mics. own remix of the mega hit 'High Paradise' to Astrix's 'Mescaline' via fantastic contributions from Xerox and Illumination, Save The Robot, Shanti (Juvenile), Hujaboy, Atomic Pulse and the lost Dado mix of Ecstacy, this is top collection of big tunes.

Review: Perhaps the defining psych album of its generation, The 13th Floor Elevators' 'The Psychedelic Sound...' spans all your trippy garage rock hallmarks; it included timeless riffing guitars, tenor harmonies, and even an electric jug, which was blown on by much-honoured band member Tommy Hall. Now sees a reissue on bi-coloured 180g vinyl, featuring newly remastered mono mixes as well as a stereo mix of the running order originally intended by the band. This is the first remaster-reissue of the album in over four decades; before that, the stereo version was only available as part of the band's limited Music Of The Spheres boxset.

Review: Undoubtedly one of the most important bands in the whole history of psychedelic music, The 13th Floor Elevators were ahead of the curve and they didn't quite catch the wave some of their contemporaries managed in the heady days of Haight Ashbury and the hippie explosion. That might be down to their rawness, but there's still a beautiful songwriting sensibility to their music on this, their second album from 1967. Roky Erikson's band stretched out on Easter Everywhere, and this reissue on Charly goes even deeper into the record by offering up the mono and stereo versions of the album simultaneously, encouraging the audiophiles to do some avid A-Bing and the deep trippers to hear these heady sounds with dimensions they never noticed before.

Review: Stroom's latest must-have set takes a trawl through the sparse but inspired back catalogue of 19 Gadi Pirms Sakuma, an impossible-to-pigeonhole Latvian band operative in the late 1980s and early 90s. Gathering together a mixture of previously released and never-before-heard material, "19 Years Before The Beginning" brilliantly showcases the band's unique mix of skewed synth-pop, unusual instrumentation (bassoon anyone?), near Balearic grooves, nods to Western dance music and tipsy post-electro. There's much to enjoy throughout, not least the stylish musical eccentricity that marked out the band as one of Eastern Europe's most intriguing musical exports at the tail end of the Soviet era.

Review: The 1975 made plenty of fans happy when they announced a series of 10th anniversary reissues and merchandise on the back of some top main stage performances at the likes of Leeds and Reading. Now art-stars with a global fan base, it is a full decade since their breakout self titled debut, a record full of their signature choruses, magical melodies and soaring grooves that draw on electro-grooves and alt-rock energy, all with plenty of dreamy moments in between to ensure the whole thing plays out like a real story telling album. As it should be. The album debuted at number one on the charts and remains a firm favourite today.

Review: We're certainly not the first people to note that Being Funny In A Foreign Language is a break from the norm for The 1975. One of Britain's biggest and most opinion-splitting stadium acts aren't exactly known for their brevity or scaling back, having opted for song titles that take up far too much space, and often marrying these with mammoth tunes which are part of the reason people either love or don't really care for them.

Enter 2022's addition to the back catalogue. Overall, we've got just over 40-minutes of music here, which divided into 11 tracks means four minutes per song on average. And there's also a distinct lack of big room, at least up against their previous stuff, although there's still nothing subtle about the emotional indie pop here. Overall, then, this may not be the record die harders wanted, but it could well be the LP the band needed.

Review: Following the major success of 2018's A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships and 2020's controversial, overly indulgent, ludicrously lengthy yet genuinely brilliant Notes On A Conditional Form, many felt at a loss as to where The 1975 would set their sonic sights next. Shockingly, Matty Healy and co-opted to reign in their artistic scope with Being Funny In A Foreign Language; prioritising instantaneous delivery and poignant pop over swelling instrumental dirges and deep house experiments. Discarding many of their previous outsider influences in favour of delivering an unashamed pop-rock record; the resulting 11-track 40-minute LP is literally half the songs and half the runtime of its predecessor, yet utilises this tighter timeframe to craft some of their most memorable and effective pieces to date. From the sardonic disco-pop of 'Happiness' which channels the 80s, John Carpenter-obsessed aura of their self-titled debut, to the baroque orchestral indie-folk standout 'Part Of The Band' echoing early Vampire Weekend, to the folk-punk balladry of 'Wintering', LP5 from one of the biggest bands in the world is both a simultaneous swing for the fences and an introverted left turn into succinct composition and simpler song structure.

Review: One of bass culture's biggest albums of 2023 finally sees the light of wax as 1991 proudly presents his debut album Odyssey. While best known within the realms of drum & bass, here the young UK artist is given space to spread his musical wings and showcase how broad his style and influences are. From the Justice-flavoured title track to the bumping Zinc-style bass house slammer 'Life' via the breath-taking progressive breaks of 'Who Hurt You', 1991 digs deep across the spectrum and joins dots between often disparate musical worlds through the lens of contemporary D&B. An exceptional and very positive debut album.

Review: Gothenburg's Alex Backman prefers to go by his birth year, 1991, and his output has been an important part of Opal Tapes' development over the last four years. The young producer prefers to deal in albums rather than singles, and his Skogen, Flickan Och Flaskan LP from 2012 is still very much one of our favourite from the OT camp. This new mini LP, No More Dreams, is a similar affair; taking the listener from the sparse yet mechanical sequence of Part 1, though to more desolate terrains as the album develops further, and ending up in a startling, hollow stratosphere of lonesome drones that give the term 'ambient' a new, more kinetic meaning. If you're looking for some drone with meaning, message and movement, then 1991 is the man for you.

Review: "Dream, dream on... your dream will come alive," goes the mantra of 'Dreams', the melancholic 4-chord lead single by eurodance supergroup 2 Brothers On The 4th Floor. We should hope so too. Or, at least, we should hope your dream to own this gold-coloured, 180g audiophile gatefold repress of their 'Very Best Of' album should come true. Forming in 1990 when brothers Martin and Bobby Boer started making bedroom pop in their parent's flat on the 4th floor of their apartment block, this band-cum-techno act have never shied from the lilting emotions of disparate genres, from indie folk to happy hardcore. Assisted by rapper Da Smooth Baron MC and singer Peggy "The Duchess", this album compiles almost every 'hit' from this ambitious studio project's lengthy career, from the beachside naff-trance of 'Never Alone' to the future-dystopian vocoder tones of 'Living In Cyberspace'. Cheese fanatics will love this one.

Review: When he released third album "Me Against The World" in 1995, Tupac Shakur was arguably the biggest name in hip-hop. As we now know, it wouldn't last, with the LA rapper losing his life in a drive-by shooting 12 months later. As tragic as his demise was, his music still resonates and this album - here reissued to celebrate its 25th anniversary - is arguably the best of the lot. Produced by an all-star cast of beat-makers (Brian G, Easy Mo Bee, Tony Pizarro and Moe ZMD included), the set offered a glossy and polished take on the then dominant gangster rap style while including numerous nods to R&B, swing and G-funk. If you don't already own a copy, grab one of these pronto.

Their new album Manual Manic Procedures on Metal Blade Records is only heightening that reputation with another bold mix of high-quality death metal sounds that are seriously constructed but not too earnest in execution. This fine sophomore effort follows 2021's Slave to the Scalpel, a manic debut that is followed up by another hefty slab of old-school death metal but with a contemporary edge. If you like it hard and gore-themed with ferocious licks and unrelenting drums, get your ears around this one which deals with themes as diverse as chemical spills and mental health.

Comprising heavyweights such as songwriter/producers Bill Meyers and Guy Thomas and Blood Sweat & Tears' Neil Subenhaus, Toto's Jeff Porcaro, Novo Combo's Carlos Rios, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Boruff and Mike Fisher, the album is an AOR-meets-yacht-meets-80s ballads that's captures every member's prowess and collective tightness over nine short sweet tracks. Slick, incredibly well produced and loaded with a keen eye for arrangement and composition, it's remarkable these haven't surfaced before. An incredible piece of excavation from Preservation Records.

After many years of being hugely and tastefully eclectic, there seems to have been a real focus on electro this year with the boss himself serving up masterful mixes of such sounds for his on going radio shows. 214 keeps up the good work with a nice deep offering here. 'Alpenglow' is all muted sci-fi synth sand jittery beats to get you going then 'Exposure To Wind' keeps you afloat between distant planets. 'Quick Start' is a turbocharged workout with lovely bubbling bass and 'The Night's Shift' then gets slow, sludgy, and superb.

Review: Shunji Mori's name might not be immediately familiar to those who haven't been paying proper attention, but the Japanese musician has been responsible for so much incredible music over the years it's hard to know where to begin. Perhaps with the nu-jazz, deep house and downtempo output in the early-1990s, when labels like Nuphonic, Japanese Idyllic Records and Down 2 Earth Recordings were providing the platform. Maybe it's the instrumental guitar duo Gabby & Lopez with his buddy Masayuki Ishii, or improvisational concerts performed alongside Daiho Soga.

Who knows. What's really important is that we're here now, with 222 - a return to the solo spotlight for the exalted artist in question. Song For Joni, a brand new full-length, is a spellbinding and beautiful trip into the blissful places we rarely get to visit, ambience that surrounds, then lulls, then hones in. Work is both fresh and decades old, mirroring the overall effect of listening, with time and space seeming to melt away into mesmerising tones.

Review: 1980's post-punk outfit 23 Skidoo release their first new material in fifteen years! These guys have been right up there with the likes of Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle in the past, always evolving and developing their sound while retaining a distinctive industrial edge. Beyond Time is inspired by a 2011 documentary of the same name - the DVD of the documentary is slotted inside this packaging - and it's probably the most 'relaxed' work we've heard from the group before. There's plenty of ambience and slow-paced beats, dense landscapes of sound and even flurries of jazz. Fantastic from beginning to end, this comes hotly recommended for all the B-side junkies.
