D'ailie - "Live It Up" (instrumental) (4:13)
Review: This latest is a reissue of a Congress Productions EP featuring their seminal 'Neptune'. The much-sampled early 80s jazz-funk classic comes in original form next to two unreleased cuts. The first is a rare boogie cut 'Live It Up' that has been extended for more dancefloor heft having first been dropped under the D'aile' alias as a B-side. Then comes 'Kevin's Funk' which is named in reference to Incognito trumpet player Kevin Robinson, who played as part of a Congress-associated line-up for this session.

Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:13)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:04)
Review: Mr Bongo restock a brilliant 7" in their signature Brazil 45s series. The nineteenth to grace it, this blue-starred slice of small wax shone a light on Wilson das Neves' brilliant cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' on the A, as well as a Mr Bongo fave on the B, Som Tres' potent samba-funk overflow 'Tanga'. The former flexes the historic muscles of a mythic Brazilian percussionist and vibesman, lending fidgety soft feels to AWB's already lull-lifting concoction; then 'Tanga' contrasts to this sense of measuredness with pure animal verve, as Tres' calls out to his bandmates commandingly amid whirlwinds of piano and drums.

Review: .with a feelgood charm that has resonated not only with jazz heads, but also the youngest generation thanks to its inclusion in the soundtrack to the magnificent Sing animation. It is one of those that will always get a good reaction and is always worth having in the collection. Here it's served up on a 180 gram vinyl 12" with the more noodling 'Blue Rondo A La Turk' and a vocal version of 'Take Five' with Carmen McRae bringing the soul.

When The Music's Over (9:50)
I Don't Fuck Around (6:19)
Review: This project stems from the mutual admiration between Daru Jones and Devonne "DJ" Harrison who, upon discovering their collaborations with Jack White, had the idea of blending rock with jazz. DJ Harrison's vintage keyboard skills and Daru's versatility made them perfect for such a rock-influenced project. Legendary guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, a longtime friend of Mr. Mandel, was ideal for the guitar role and after several years they finally got together to record this album in 2022. The result is a first 12" single, mastered at 45 rpm for exceptional sound. Here's hoping there will be more to come.

Lisa Decker & SaturnVybz - "Love & Hope" (4:42)
Lisa Decker & Nautilus - "Summer Child" (4:21)
Review: Lisa Decker makes a return with two new singles here that are taken from her upcoming album which is due in May of this year. It comes two years after her debut with the Japanese jazz trio Nautilus and marks something of a conceptual shift in her sound. 'Love & Hope' finds her turn in a stylish jazz vocal with funky bass loops and organic drums and percussion that straddle many different genres. 'Summer Child' then sinks into a nice smooth jazz-funk vibe with soft focus chords bringing a touch of class to her breezy vocals.

Basa Basa (4:08)
Sahara Akwantuo (3:46)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of Berlin's Ghanaian ex-pat "burger-highlife" scene may already be familiar with Lee Dodou, a singer who recorded a number of classic singles and albums during the 1980s as part of bands Georg Darko and Kantata. He retired from music in 1991, but has been persuaded to return to action by the Philophon team. This comeback single is pretty impressive all told, with A-side "Basa Basa" - a triumphantly celebratory chunk of 1960s "concert party" highlife rich in punchy horn lines and Dodou's full-throated vocals - being joined on the flipside by the slower, synth-laden "Sahara Akwantou". Brilliantly, the label describes this as "kraut-life" due to its unique (and rather good) fusion of highlife and German kosmiche.

Review: This is an exclusive for independent stores only this Record Store Day and a fine one it is too from the one and only welder turned reggae kingpin that is Bob Marley and his Wailers. This is a vital one for the collection that has been pressed in limited quantities and is a non-album 45rpm that he recorded for legendary producer Bunny Lee at Randy's in Jamaica. This 7" single has a Custom Gorgon label and features the happy-go-lucky dub of 'Mr Chatter Box' with Bob's smoky but smooth vocals and a version on the flip.

Review: These artists got together back in 1969 to record Let The Sunshine In, a landmark album that blended jazz, rock and soul into a vibrant sound that captured the spirit of its era with its experimental soundscapes and electrifying performances. These two tunes are taken from the album and come on 7" for useful DJ deployment. Driscoll's emotive, soulful vocals pair beautifully with Auger's masterful Hammond organ and the Trinity's dynamic instrumentation. The title track in particular is a real anthem of its day and is sure to make just a s much of a mark all these years on.

Brian Auger & The Trinity - "In & Out" (2:59)
Review: BDQ's next limited 7" is a superb three-way collab between Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. Their long-lost version of classic dancer 'Jeannine' is powered by wandering basslines and swinging Hammond Organ chords that bring warmth to the free-flowing jazz vocals up top. It has never before been on 45rpm and has been all but unknown for the last 50 years but was recently rediscovered while the label head was looking for something else for the recent 'Auger Incorporated' compilation on Soul Bank Music. On the flip is a mod jazz dancer who is just as hip and ready to make an impact.

Review: Milo MacMahon and Raul Indipwo aka Duo Ouro Negro, arrived in Portugal in 1959 and built an international music career over three decades. Singing in Portuguese, Angolan languages, French and more, they also covered Latin American and North American songs and connected with the Civil Rights movement during their 1969 U.S. tour. This experience shaped their 1972 landmark album, Blackground, which was a powerful cultural statement influenced by Black Power, jazz and African independence movements. In 1981, Blackground was reworked with new arrangements including the instrumental 'Danca do Robalinho' which came in two parts. This jazz-funk masterpiece now gets reissued for the first time and is a must-buy.

They also bring in more contemporary compositions which results in an utterly original sound and great gateway to some of the world's oldest literary works. They recently finished a debut full-length album and now the single 'Blue Collar' from it comes on limited edition vinyl. The track tells the ancient tale of young scholars in love with a powerful narrative and moving melodies. The one and only DJ Spinna steps up on the flip to offer his own classy deep-house remix.

Review: Norwegian pianist and composer Eyolf Dale's The Space Between Two Notes is his seventh album on Edition Records. This album reimagines selections from his trio albums Being and The Wayfarers with some rich orchestral arrangements by the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, all conducted by Miho Hazama. Blending jazz and classical music in unique ways, Dale focuses on the nuanced spaces between notes and so creates a horizontal, interval-based musical exploration. His trio, including Audun Kleive on drums and Per Zanussi on bass, achieves a delicate balance while integrating with the orchestra to deliver a seamless, expressive sound that makes for a genre-blurring musical vision.

Review: Black Monument Ensemble was originally formed as a medium for Damon Locks's sample-based sound collage work. The Chicago-based multi-media artist and activist then evolved it from an initial solo project into a collective of talented singers and musicians. Their new album was written in summer 2020 which was denied the pandemic, the black lives matter movement and general social unrest in the US. That permeates the often intense moods, with spoken word snippets, angst ridden sax lines and explosive rhythms. It makes for a thrilling album by a genuinely diverse collective which is made up of musicians who range from nine to 52 years of age.

Review: Inspired by the shifting seascapes of Josephine Davies' Shetland roots, Weatherwards by her Satori project reflects the islands' enduring influence. Over seven years and four albums, Satori remains Josephine's musical home and is where her saxophone artistry thrives. The compositions are rooted in Shetland's landscapes and her personal history, and they introduce pianist Alcyona Mick alongside bassist Dave Whitford and drummer James Maddren. Weatherwards highlights Satori's hallmark: a dynamic balance of free-flowing creativity and unity in a sumptuous jazz framework.

Review: What is there left to be said about this album? It is (probably) one of the most pressed and reissue of all-time and for good reason - it set a new standard for jazz and appeared to both hardcore lovers of the genre as well as those with only a passing interest. No matter your view of jazz, it is hard not to be moved by the feathery drums and wandering bass of opener 'So What', or the expressive horns of 'Freddie Freeloader' over nimble piano fingers that dance so delicately about the keys. 'All Blues' is a study in melancholy and 'Flamenco Sketches' brings a hint of South American sunshine into this most moving and intimate of jazz records.

Review: Miles Davis' quintet was formed in 1955 and soon after began impressing the jazz world with the sort of invention that eventually saw them hailed as one of the greatest in history. Each member - including Miles on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums - was a creative force in their own right. Cookin' proved that and came on Prestige as the first in a series of four albums, later followed by Steamin', Workin' and Relaxin'. These albums were recorded during two highly productive sessions in May and October of 1956 and the quintet's groundbreaking work explored a dynamic blend of improvisation, technical skill and innovative jazz exploration.

Review: There are various eye watering stats about the many, many million copies of this album that have been pressed and sold. For each one sold there is almost as many different versions of it, too, if you look on Discogs. But all the hype and huff aside, there is a reason it is one of jazz's most famous records. The sultry modal moods, the masterfully melancholic trumpet sounds Davis conjures and the noir, late night vibe are all perfectly realised and universally understood. Without it, music at large, let alone jazz, would sound very different.

Review: For all but the most ardent followers of jazz and diehard Miles Davis fans, it can be hard to keep up with the many different albums he put out alongside his Quintet. That Quintet, often said to be the greatest in all of jazz history thanks to including Miles on trumpet next to John Coltrane on tenor, Red Garland on keys, bass from Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones on drums, put out several long players with very similar titles including this one, Miles: The New Miles Davis Quintet, in 1956. It is one of the earlier works from the then newly formed band and the songs in it are a mix of pop and jazz standards.

Review: In a discography that is jam packed with high quality albums, Miles Davis's Sorcerer is one of the standouts. Now newly reissued by Music on Vinyl, it transports listeners into the heart of 1967's avant-garde jazz landscape when it was originally released as part of Davis's Second Great Quintet era. The music showcases the maestro's pioneering fusion of modal jazz and free improvisation from the enigmatic title track to the haunting Prince of Darkness. Davis and his ensemble craft a sonic tapestry that mesmerises with every note here and Wayne Shorter's evocative saxophone, Herbie Hancock's masterful piano, and Tony Williams's dynamic drumming all help make that so.

The ensemble, which is rightly one of jazz history's most celebrated, included Davis on trumpet, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Cannonball Adderley on alto sax, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. With Miles's trumpeteering and Marcus's iconic slap-bass going toe-to-toe on each track, the pair mischievously play chicken with each other as both hop and skip between the spotlight. The same can also be said for the devilish arrangement as we flicker from game show funk ("Jilli") to epitaph soliloquies ("Mr Pastorius") all within a tangible 80s production context. This has aged remarkably well.

This third studio set arrives some four years on from her sophomore set, and 12 months after her most adventurous work to date, the 25-minute Blackened Cities. It's a largely upbeat and hugely atmospheric affair, mixing her usual Nina Simome style jazz workouts with drowsy, piano-laden torch songs, evocative accapella interludes and, in the case of the brilliant "Gold Junkies", dubbed-out, four-to-the-floor fusions of trip-hop and dark soul. Throughout, her superb voice provides a stunning focal point.

Exotic Moog was initially released in 1969 and pretty much does what it says on the tin - takes the iconic Moog synth and conjures up all manner of exotic and spaced-out sounds that leave you laying back and gazing on in awe. There's a retro-future feel to them which makes them all the more likable, and though some are beatless pieces of suspensory scene-setting, there are some breezy grooves like 'I Talk To The Trees' and sentimental space waltzes like 'The Enchanted Sea'. A characterful world of cinematic sounds for sure.

Review: On the first instalment in the Wamono A to Z compilation series, released in September 2020, dusty-fingered diggers DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite.jp and Chintam focused on Japanese jazz-funk and rare groove gems recorded and released between 1968 and '80. For this speedy sequel, they've narrowed their focus further in order to showcase little-known Japanese funk slammers pressed to wax between 1970 and '77. As you'd expect, there's tons of absolute bangers amongst the 10 tracks on show, with highlights including the Blaxploitation movie soundtrack vibes of Mieko Hirota's 'Theme of Doberman Cop', the fuzzy, Hammond-sporting psych-funk of Fujio Tokita's quirky 'Watashi No Beatles', and the energetic, proto disco-funk of Hatsumi Shibata's 'Singer Lady'.

Review: .While Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento and American saxophonist Sam Gendel first met and played together at the dawn of the last decade - at a Los Angeles cafe both used to frequent, fact fans - it was only last year that they decided to collaborate on a release. The Room, the resultant album, was reportedly recorded in two days in a studio in the Californian countryside. It's an undeniably magical and sun-soaked affair, with Gendel teasing fluttering, flute-esque improvisations from his soprano saxophone while Do Nascimento delivers impeccable, finger-picking meditations on his seven-string acoustic guitar. The latter is undoubtedly a virtuoso with his own distinct style - a Brazilian take on classical guitar, incorporating nods to lesser-known regional music - but instinctively knows when to step back and allow Gendel the limelight. Impressive stuff all told.

Review: Som, Sangue e Raca remains a cornerstone in Brazilian music. The classic album epitomises Dom Salvador e Abolicao's fusion of samba, soul, rock, jazz, forro, and baiao. Their influential sound heavily impacted Banda Black Rio and that is just one of the reasons why this classic album is celebrated. It is also a great summer listen with its warm and infectious melodies and diverse musicality all of which means it's a must-cop for lovers of international sounds. Even better is the fact that Som, Sangue e Raca now comes in a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on translucent red vinyl.

Review: A pivotal figure in the early 1970s MPB scene, Salvador was not only a highly regarded sessionist and composer but also a band leader. His 1971 album is a vibrant mix of bossa nova, samba, funk, and carioca styles, infused with raw energy. Original copies of this influential fourth album often fetch around $200 due to its eclectic range. From the lively opener 'Uma Vida' to the Beatles-esque narrative of 'O Rio' and the orchestral boogaloo of 'Number One', the album showcases Salvador at the height of his fusionist creativity and musical prowess.

Review: Domi and JD Beck are already taking the world by storm - just clock the irreverent but oh-so-sweet video to 'Smile', directed by Anderson .Paak and featuring cameos from the likes of Thundercat. The duo met by chance jamming at a NAMM convention and soon struck upon a partnership which took their serious musical skills and injected them with the kind of flippant, fun-seeking attitude that breathes new life into traditional music. They've sat in with Herbie Hancock and backed Ariana Grande, Mac Demarco and more, and now their debut album lands on Paak's Apeshit label in conjunction with Blue Note. Not Tight is cool down to the very last drop, but crucially it doesn't take itself too seriously. Domi and Beck know they've got the skills, and you can tell they're having an absolute blast messing with the jazz rulebook while delivering some impossibly sweet grooves.

Review: The Albina Music Trust aims to amplify Portland's musical past by working with underrepresented soul musicians, one such artist being 23-year-old drummer, composer and educator Domo Branch. Branch has come up through the ranks of the American Music Program - a crucial proving ground for Portland's jazz musicians - and now lives in Manhattan, performing with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the direction of Wynton Marsalis. Sparse and minimalist in its ingredients it may seem superficially, but closer investigation reveals there's polyrhythmic power and heaps of unpredictable expression in his free improvisation.

Review: Legendary UK label Decca is busy reissuing some of the most distinctive British jazz albums ever made. Here comes another one that has had a full remaster job before being pressed to heavyweight wax and housed in an even heavier weight sleeve. Don Rendell was in no uncertain terms a towering figure in British modern jazz for more than 50 years. He was not only there when the genre evolved into what it is today, but was driving that evolution with his masterful playing and compositional skills as part of this famous quintet. New liner notes are also included in this stone cold classic reissue.

Review: The cult Ian Carr Quintet featured post-war British jazz luminary saxophonist Don Rendell for this special album recorded at the BBC Jazz Club in April 1965. He had become a great after playing with greats like Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. For this session, he hooked up with four younger and equally adventurous jazz musicians eager to innovate and this recording captures the magic they cooked up. It marked the debut of pianist Michael Garrick within the Quintet and he profoundly influenced the group's direction and arguably reshaped the broader British jazz sound. Without exaggeration, this album marks a pivotal point in the evolution of British jazz.

Review: Blue Note Records continue to top up their Classic Vinyl reissues series, this time homing in on Lou Donaldson's sixth album for the label 'Blues Walk' (he never swayed from Blue Note). The legendary jazz saxophonist and bandleader intended the LP to be his magnum opus at the time, and as history slowly ingested its influence, it became as such. Six rain-drizzled original pieces span two sides, with Donaldson joined by Herman Foster, Peck Morrison, Dave Bailey and Ray Barretto for an unusual jazz combo involving congas, and a unique mood that epitomised his own brand of cool jazz-blues.

He has toped several highly sought of albums and is still turning them out today despite already having assured his legacy. A Bad Donato is something of a move away from his Brazilian bossa nova roots - instead the album, which was recorded in LA, is electric and eclectic with funk, psychedelic pop and groovy Fender Rhodes driven sounds. This reissue on Verve By Request comes on nice heavyweight 180g vinyl with classics like 'The Frog' and 'Lunar Tune' still sounding fresh.

Review: Matador is something of a forgotten masterpiece that gets a deserving deluxe treatment here with an all-analogue reissue on nice and heavy 180 gram vinyl. Released back in 1963 by passionate jazz players, trumpeter Kenny Dorham and alto talent Jackie McLean, the energetic album also features spirited performances from Bobby Timmons on piano, and the locked-in rhythm section of Teddy Smith on bass and J.C. Moses on drums. There is frenetic interplay between all, with loose and swinging keys and real spontaneity resulting in hugely expressive and energetic sounds. Remarkably, the whole album was recorded in just one day in 1962 and brims with rawness and realness.

Originally released on Riverside, it introduced pianist Cedar Walton and has now been remastered from the original Mono analogye tapes by Kevin Gray, and pressed at Pallas on 180g vinyl in a deluxe reverse-board jacket. Dorham, a jazz trumpet virtuoso, led his own bands and contributed to legendary ensembles and this recording was done at Reeves Sound Studio, New York, between July 7th and August 15th, 1958, with a stellar lineup including Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Charlie Persip, and G.T. Hogan.

Thankfully, those of us more bothered about the music than the sautes of the physical product can cop this reissue of Doris's debut LP for a fair price. It has hints of Joni Mitchell as well as Led Zeppelin and Doris herself was back dup by her hubby on bass, who provide plenty of killer funky b-lines under the experimental melodies up top. Add in Janne Carlsson on drums and great work by Bernot Egerladh on organ and you have an essential record.

Review: The International Anthem label continues to lead the booming jazz scene from the very front with a new album from bassist Dezron Douglas and harpist Brandee Younger. It is a comforting record, on with uplifting sounds and spiritual overtones that were all performed at a series of live-streamed gigs the pair hosted from their living room in Harlem, New York City. Incredibly, it was all done with just a single microphone, but that mic manages to capture every plucked string, every second of emotion. Was easy as the whole thing to listen to, that's not to say it is easy listening - there is still a world of craft and invention on show throughout.

Inspired by parallels between film processing and music recording, Dragatto embraces imperfections like tape hiss and dusty EQ pots to create a rich, noir-inspired soundscape while blending drama, allure and sentimentality. Review: Brian Auger's Streetnoise was originally recorded in 1969 with Julie Driscoll and The Trinity. It stands proud as a genre-blurring work of jazz, rock, folk and soul greatness that found the group moving beyond their r&b and jazz roots. Instead, Auger and Driscoll crafted a progressive, avant-garde yet deeply soulful record in which Driscoll's haunting vocals contrast beautifully with Auger's instrumentation. The gatefold sleeve was designed by Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman and was inspired by Hogarth's satirical etchings which in turn reflects the album's artistic ambition. Streetnoise features dynamic instrumentals like 'Ellis Island', great reinterpretations of 'All Blues' and 'Flesh Failures' and standout tracks such as 'Indian Rope Man' which highlight Auger's visionary fusion of styles.

It features the Prestige All Stars led by revered trumpeters Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman and supported by a solid rhythm section of pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Ed Thigpen. This sublime album includes five original compositions, one each by Farmer, Byrd, and O'Brien, and two by Sulieman. Review: Hardcore record collectors love a leftfield talent or outthere artistic character, and the late percussionist Milford Graves certainly fits that biting. He was one of the most unique artists of his time and grew from the states of his native New York to be known around the world for his work in the New York Art Quartet and collaborations with Albert Ayler, Sonny Sharrock and contributions to the NYC loft era free jazz scene. He linked up with pianist Don Pullen in April 1966 for a show at Yale University that marked a real turning point in that it saw him take more creative control having mostly collaborated up until then. Strap in and listen to what he had to say for himself on this fine reissue of recordings from that night.
