Drum And Bass/Jungle
Jungle Distance (4:18)
Jungle Distance (remix) (6:56)
Review: Lithuanian craftsman IJO comes correct on Amenology with the brutalist 'Jungle Distance'. Think Equinox, think Paradox, think pure Amen science, blasting at you at 160mph with ice cold pads lurking in the background... before a stunning breakdown sweeps you off your feet. For the remix IJO brings a whole new wave of space, thicker pads and a deep funk in that slinky bassline. Mileage for your missions.

Split The Lark EP

Minimal House/Tech House
Ikako - "Abondoned" (6:28)
Ikako - "Do That" (5:41)
The Cap Boy - "Matei" (5:25)
The Cap Boy - "Kundalini" (5:13)
The Cap Boy - "Take A Break" (4:16)
Review: IKAKO and The Cap Boy's collaborative EP, 'Split the Lark', offers a fusion of electronic textures that blends house, tech, breaks and acid elements into a seamless whole. Their distinct styles converge to create a release that reflects the pair's deep understanding of dance music's roots and future directions. The EP highlights IKAKO's Georgian touch on raw, deep house grooves, balanced by The Cap Boy's Spanish flair for breakbeats and acid-infused rhythms. The result is a sound that feels both familiar and innovative, making it perfect for late-night sets. It's a solid release that pushes boundaries while keeping the dancefloor firmly in mind.

Loss (Regis version)
NCR (Monoton dub)
Review: Remixes of iconic New York no wave act Ike Yard by Regis and Konrad Becker's Monoton project feature on this joint release from Blackest Ever Black and Desire. Technically a complementary release to Desire's soon to drop reissue of Ike Yard's eponymous debut set from 1982, this 12" has the Downwards boss and Becker tackling tracks from that album. Led by Stuart Argabright, Ike Yard's brand of avant garde electro minimalism is not something you can easily digest, but both remixes here work as fine complements to the source material. Regis' take on "Loss" is a pattering, skeletal affair that develops ripples of uneasy analogue pulses without ever forgoing Ike Yard's paranoia inducing intentions, while Becker's Monoton Dub take on "NCR" is equally respectful, if much more foreboding in execution.

Half A God (Powell remix)
Cherish 8 (The KVB remix)
Cherish 8 (Vessel remix)
NCR (Bandshell remix)
Review: Whilst remix EPs are by no means the most original of concepts, French label Desire should be applauded for their set of Ike Yard Remix EPs due to the calibre of those involved. Previous editions have seen contributions from Regis, Monoton, Tropic of Cancer and former Ike Yard synth player Fred Szymanski and this third and final EP sees the label turn to a younger generation with equally compelling results. Diagonal boss Powell might be new to remixes (this is only his second after reconstructing Silent Servant for Jealous God) but he's evidently willing and capable to dissect the source and reassemble in his own style. Put simply, little of "Half A God" remains here but Powell's remix will resonate immediately with anyone that consumed his original work last year. Elsewhere The KVB essentially throw down a cover version of "Cherish 8" whilst Vessel's accompanying mix of the same track should sound deafening on a big system and much the same can be said about Bandshell's refix of "NCR".

Don't Play 170 (5:07)
Don't Play 170 (Lindsey Herbert remix) (5:09)
Review: Japanese techno producer Toru Ikemoto returns with a kicking new EP on Conundrum Records. Ikemoto has an uncompromising style which finds him boil things down to the bare essentials and dive deep into dark, hypnotic then worlds with hey low ends and a real sense of urgency. His three new jams here all foment that signature style, from the pulsing bass throb of 'Don't Play 171' to the more percussive loops of 'Don't Play 162.' 'Don't Play 170' is pure heady and linear techno bliss and a remix from Lindsey Herbert shuts down with some sub-aquatic rhythms.

You (extended mix) (5:57)
You (dub mix) (5:58)
Review: As Toolroom only puts out a small percentage of their releases on vinyl, those given the wax treatment tend to be anthems in waiting. Martin Ikin's 'You', featuring some seriously loved-up, glassy-eyed lead vocals from Chenai, certainly sounds like a future classic. Shamelessly positive and life-affirming, 'You' is a turn-of-the-90s style piano house workout with added 21st century weight, a few disco-house style filters and a raw, stabbing bassline. The cheery vocal version (side A) comes back by a quite different Dub mix. This opts for a darker, chunkier big room sound - all wobbly riffs, pulsing electronic noises, cut up vocal snippets and mind-mangling motifs - that should delight all those who love Toolroom's trademark sound.

Flashmob - "My Body" (5:25)
Nathan Barato & Matheo Velez - "Weapon" (5:34)
Jenn Getz & Alfie - "Vibration" (6:11)
Review: Functional house experts Toolroom are back with Toolroom Sampler Vol 11 which is again packed with maximal club cuts for big dancefloors. Martin Ikin's 'Make U Sweat' is indeed sweet tech that never stops pumping under libidinous vocals. Flashmob's 'My Body' is loopy and manic tech with peak time intent and Nathan Barato and Matheo Velez offer up the macho grooves of 'Weapon.' Last of all, Jenn Getz & Alfie offer another slight tweak on try Toorloom sound with the grey and gritty white knuckle beats of 'Vibration.' A great EP for working DJs looking for instant impact.

Low Steppa & Crusy - "BFG" (5:44)
Eden Prince - "Get Down" (5:27)
Review: Toolroom share the seventh instalment of their label Sampler series, bringing together four new ones from six artists in their roster; Martin Ikin, Raumakustik & Tony Romera, Low Steppa & Crusy, and Eden Prince. These are huge, ravey, deep techy numbers for the big-room-inclined; we're rhythmically and vocal-samply implored to oscillate at a nigh-militant frequency, though the impulse to dance doesn't come without its shuffles and wonks. Our highlight here is the beatless breakdown in 'BFG', on which that delicious chord stab truncates all expectations thereafter.

Notio Botherdini (Fabrizio Mammarella remix) (6:09)
Darkroom (Bob Swans remix) (6:11)
Review: Red Laser has long been champion of what they call 'Manctalo' ie a fusion of Italo sounds with Manchester attitude. Il Bosco is next to contribute to that canon with The Darkroom EP. It's a limited edition four track that opens with 'Sexual', a throwback 80s disco jam with retro future pads and a great sense of mystery. 'Darkroom' then has big bright synth arps and chugging beats for expressive move-making in the club and 'Notio Botherdini' then gets a remix from the great Fabrizio Mammarella who turns everything up to 11. 'Darkroom' (Bob Swans remix) shuts down with an electro-tinged rhythm and lashings of cosmic goodness.

Review: Red Laser is back with just one more gem before the end of the year of our Lord 2024. Apparently already tried and tested at recent parties in Manchester, this release brings four prime Italo disco edits all curated by Bosco. These tracks were unearthed during his many trips to Italy and have since been refined for the club and 'Destiny' opens with pulsating arpeggios, cosmic bass and a stunning female vocal that gets the airtime it deserves. Next, 'Flavio' delivers a classic Italo vibe, 'Newsin' is a catchy track blending marimba and synth and closer 'Lace' is a proto-goth new wave piece with a romantic edge.

Review: ILDEC's Dead Space EP features four heavy, futuristic tracks that are set to dominate the dancefloor. Leading with 'Just,' a robust techno/electro blend with a distinct futuristic vibe, the EP sets a powerful tone. '3030303' (feat. Torrent) follows, delivering a bouncy acid dancefloor killer with a captivating sci-fi narrative. 'Loop' takes a dirtier, sexier approach with its groovy, ass-shaking rhythm that verges on eerie acid house, making it an irresistible track. Closing the EP is 'Trontron,' a high-energy breaks track that crushes with its alluring, electrifying beats. Each track on Dead Space EP has a unique flavor. Are you looking to wow dancefloor patrons at your next DJ event? Then look no further than these.

Review: BOOOoo! returns with its fourth V/A, bringing together Ildec, Pagenty, Phase O'Matic, Gogo Gadgeto and label head BOOH for a tightly assembled five-tracker. Steering into the murkier corners of electro but with a light touch, their next comp offers a range of moods without ever dropping to fully into the abyss. From 'Volviento AMT' to 'The System Is The Matrix', each artist contributes a knowing cut, one which leans dark but stays danceable, threading twisted textures and low-slung rhythms without losing sight of playability.

There Was A Bird (Jonas Kopp Frequency mix) (5:46)
Rooibos (5:13)
Rooibos (Not A Headliner remix) (5:05)
Review: We head to Madrid for this one, a new label founded by Unkle Fon and co-owned by Javier Gantz. It kicks off with a rather monstrous techno offering from Ill Communication - the collaborative name given to the label founders' production work - with remixes by Not A Headliner and Jonas Kopp. 'There Was A Bird' is forted techno with rusty metal textures, clanging industrial hits and unrelenting drums. Kopp's Frequency mix is more distilled but no less potent. 'Rooibos' then has fluttering synths that suspend you above the dance floor while the white noise bristles over linear drums. The Not A Headliner remix is twisted, dubbed-out techno for the peak time.

Review: Plastik People are back with more of that garage house goodness, celebrating the uplifting sound of Alfredo Norese with Aquilla Fearon's gorgeous vocals and the joyous vibes of Matteo Esposito. Marc Cotterell really makes the track sing with his lead mix, leaning in on the emotive qualities in the music while retaining a certain depth and groove. The original meanwhile comes on strong like a crossover soul hit in the making, and then Shaka offers up a subtly club-aligned edit which keeps the source material thoroughly intact. Groove Boys complete the set with a more jacked up version which thumps in the low end for when you want to make sure the place is jumping.

Review: EC Underground is back with more inquisitors of low-end heavy sounds on Bass Scene Investigation vol 1 and again digs deep into the worlds of electro, techno, breakbeat and IDM. The compilation kicks off with the skittish percussive patterns of Illektrolab's 'Making Heads Dip', then heads into moody ground with ADJ, Pablo Funk brings some menacing synth work and Errorbeauty gets all weird and trippy with some mad electronics. Francois Dillinger offers a dystopian electro sound full of irresistibly jacked-up drums. A fine investigation indeed.

Am I Feeling Good? (4:53)
Review: This EP showcases Ilo aka olafur Breidfjord's deep house and tech house style with three tracks that explore different aspects of the genre. The title track, 'Supernature' is a soulful house cover of Cerrone's 1977 disco classic. Breidfjord's version retains the original's catchy vocal and infectious groove, while adding his own unique touch with lush chords and a driving bassline. 'You' is a perfect track B-Side for this record, adding this alternative heater. 'Am I Feeling Good?' is a grittier track, with a driving beat and tough bassline. It's a perfect track for getting the party started, or for keeping the energy levels high on the dancefloor. The three tracks offer something for everyone, from soulful house to tech house to disco.

Review: Imaa is an experimental disco, funk and soul project which has graced the discography of the DD Lahouve Production label since at least 2014; in said timeframe, this mysterious moniker has topped up at least five releases in the French city pop vein. Although little information can be tracked down about the main artist or artists behind the project itself, we can verify that the new 12" record 'Funky Town' is indeed something special, an original, slick and catchy electric groove featuring the rampart new jack production of producer Claudio Esposito.

'Asymmetric Information' (Homemade Weapons remix) opens up with a jungle techno assault that comes on in waves of irresistible physicality, and 'Don't Crush The Acid' (Viels remix) then gets deeper and darker and more paired back. Review: Strap in for more rickety breakbeat workouts here from Imaginary Number on a limited edition heavyweight white label. Opener 'Push' is crunchy as you like with raw drum work and frayed edges to the synths. 'Grv' pairs a lively breakbeat drum loop with bleeping synths and the sort of pent up late night energy that gets any floor going. 'Somebody' is a more macho and texture techno wobbler built on ramshackle drums with wild vocals and last of all is another physical and prickly drum workout 'Fools' that is pure heat, especially with the pitched up and snatched vocal that cuts in.

Safara very much lives up to that across six tacks of energetic house and disco house that comes with just the right amounts of nostalgia and innovation while drawing from the cultural sounds of Afro-funk, highlife, Arab disco, Bollywood, Afro-Cuban jazz, Libyan reggae and Algerian Rai. Those varied sonic traditions are bolted into modern rhythms using iconic synths like the Juno 106 and Moog Model D alongside piano and strings. This is music for the mind, body and soul.

Review: Imogen's 'Metanoia' on Tresor is a powerful six-track release that pushes boundaries within the techno sphere. Side-1 begins with 'The Way She Moves,' a hard-hitting, crunchy track that brings intense, aggressive energy to the table. The industrial-tinged 'Summer Kiss' follows, driven by an uptempo tribal rhythm, while 'Tired Bones' brings a deeper grooveiclassic Tresor with its wicked, pulsating proper techno vibe. Side-2 ramps things up with 'Growing In The Dark', a relentless, alien-sounding cut with sharp percussion that drives the energy to fever pitch. 'Breathe Again' shifts gears, incorporating breakbeats and a melodic layer with a touch of Belgian doom, adding a moody edge. The EP closes on 'DX Melancholyflower', an ambient and mysterious ender that feels stark and airy, leaving the listener in a reflective state. 'Metanoia' is a fierce, dynamic EP that features Imogen's ability to blend intensity and atmosphere, making it a thrilling listen for techno enthusiasts. Not for the faint of heart!

Work Of Art (Daft Funk 'Slam Dunk' remix) (6:14)
Work Of Art (Leo Zero & Des Morgan remix) (5:41)
Review: Imperial Wonders were a Cleveland, Ohio soul vocal group earlier known as The Mints. The wonderful 'Work Of Art' is taken from the compilation The Motown Years (1981-1984) and London's Cordial treats the overlooked classic to some choice remixes. Opolopo stays true to the original, while Pagger gets the late-night boogie-down vibes in effect on side A. On the flip, the inimitable Daft Punk pick up the tempo with their surefire dancefloor burner, while Leo Zero & Des Morgan's remix is the one we were really feeling and it channels that spiritual deep house sound complete with hypnotic polyrhythms.

Fast Freddie The Roller Disco King (6:09)
I Just Wanna Be Your Lovin' Man (4:24)
Review: 'Fast Freddie the Roller Disco King' is a tune that is as good as its title. It was originally a single by Little Anthony and the Imperials (as The Imperials), featuring none other than Prince on guitar, synth and keyboards. The track's base was recorded by Prince with Pepe Willie and Andre Cymone at Sound Palace Studios in New York with later vocal and instrumental overdubs by The Imperials. The B-side, 'I Just Wanna Be Your Lovin' Man,' is an early version of '10:15,' though Prince's involvement as guitarist on this one remains unclear. Either way, this is a brilliant reissue for disco and funk lovers.

Review: The always excellent Minimal Wave presents a rare EP from Greek electronic pioneers In Trance 95 here. Alex Machairas and Nik Veliotis formed the duo in 1988 and very much helped define Greece's early electronic scene with their minimal synth and EBM-inspired sound, all of it usually marked by analogue warmth, hypnotic melodies and a futuristic sensibility. This release captures their innovative spirit and cult legacy across six unreleased tracks recorded between the late 80s and early 90s in Athens. It sounds magnificent and is a long-overdue glimpse into their visionary archive for new fans, or a fine reminder of their roots for those who have always been tuned in.

Keep Me In The Dark (Bluey's Uplifting Bass remix) (8:10)
Review: Incognito's 'Nothing Makes Me Feel Better' is a double-sided knockout that seamlessly blends house and soul music. Released on Splash Blue, this 7" offers two standout remixes. Side-1 features the 'Keep Me In The Dark' (Bluey Uplifting Bass remix), a house groove infused with funk, pop, and house elements. This track highlights the perfect marriage of soul and house. On Side-2, the 'Nothing Makes Me Feel Better' (Ski Oakenfull remix) ramps up the energy with disco and house vibes, expertly adding soulful touches. Both tracks exude class and showcase Incognito's ability to blend genres, making this release perfect for fans of sophisticated house and soul music.

Review: Reel People Music breaks new ground, in more ways than one, with the launch of fresh compilation series Broken, Deep & Dope. A spin-off from acclaimed compilation brand Soulful, Deep & Dope - introduced back in 2015 - this new series sees the much-loved independent imprint pushing further at the boundaries of soulful music. All with that customary Reel People feeling. Broken, Deep & Dope 2024, the series' first instalment, unleashes 20 superlative examples of the soulful 'bruk' (broken beat), nu beat and nu jazz sound that has so innovatively informed contemporary dancefloors around the world since its inception back in late '90s West London.
