Matthew & Kate - "Back To The Carpet"
Bangla Designe & Matthew - "Down"
Matthew & Kate - "Mable"
BLM, Matthew & Kate - "Greyday Synth"
Matthew - "Shooks"
Review: After the stunning turn that commenced their Shifted Flow imprint, the regular partnership of Burton and Rathod follow it up with another EP that appears to go even deeper into thrilling realms of reduced, jazz-inflected groove without reaching for any of the obvious tropes. "Back To The Carpet" is as laconic as can be, with just a light dusting of top end percussion and a whole lot of room for a sax to sound out in with the perfect amount of late night sleaze. Bangla Designe joins in on "Down" for a delay-rich shuffler that stays in the ultra-micro realm of beats, while "Mable" revisits the wafer-thin garage that was touched on with the previous EP. That's just the A-side, so waste no time in jumping on this record.

Review: Coming back with more of that murky electro nastiness, The Exaltics this time hooks up with Koova for a chunky split release. Robert "Exaltics" Witschakowski has been on fine form this year, and there's certainly no dip in quality for yet another release to appear with his name on it. It's very much typical Exaltics fare, steeped in sci-fi wonder and horror film creepiness, but still pummeling out an insistent beat where it counts. There are some more tender moments such as the brooding "The Last Resort", but really this is an album for club-ready electro heads.

Gremlinz & Reza - "Bloom"
Klute - "Solar Heat"
Cern - "Exhale"
Adam Elemental - "Awakening"
Review: The third sampler to be taken from Samurai's Horo Scope journey, it's yet another long distance trip into the audio abyss. Gremlinz & Reza's "Bloom" has a heartbeat that palpitates with undiluted low frequency steadiness, Klute reveals his emotions with iMax levels of cinematica, Cern thrusts forth with a fuggy fusion of grizzly subs and sniper riddims while Adam Elemental takes the concept of a roller and drowns it in atmospherics. Four wholly different cuts tied together with meditative beauty, the Scope album really does live up to its name.

Luminous Spaces (7:06)
Luminous Beings (11:53)
Review: Virtuoso musician Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens are a perfect compliment for each other on their new EP for Domino. Both are leaders in their field and used to exploring outside the usual lines, which is what they do here. "Luminous Spaces" was meant to be an Owens remix of a track from Hopkins' 2018 album SIngularity but instead she recorded new synths and vocals for it. The result is sparkling bit of melodic and astral techno that gets you lost in the lushness as you sink ever further into a trance. "Luminous Beings" is a deeper anymore thoughtful vision that makes a different but equally real impact.

Review: It's always good to see a split release from two artists whose track records (no pun intended) make it very difficult to predict where the new wares will fit. Which is exactly the case with this one, given K15's oeuvre name-checks imprints like Wotnot Music, Eglo and Wild Oats, while SMDB has appeared on Funkineven's Apron and the always great Lo Recordings in recent years. Needless to say, then, if we can rely on one thing it's that everything on this expansive, obscure collection of curveballs will be deep and richly textured. From 'Pace & Time''s downtempo barroom jazz, to the shuffling broken beats and waves of synth on 'Dry Mango (Part 2)', the confusing beat structures and delicate piano play of 'Earth State' to 'Syntherlude''s beat-less, science fiction tune up, it's all well made stuff.

Implicate Explicate (Ekoplekz remix)
Implicate Explicate (TVO remix)
Implicate Explicate (Paul Purgas remix)
Review: The latest release from We Can Elude Control, the label run by Emptyset's Paul Purgas, sees more modular synth explorations, this time from the collaboration of New York sonic artist and filmmaker Rose Kallal, and Mark O Pilkington, founder of "cult esoterica" publishers Strange Attractor. Originally produced as the sound track to Kallal's 16mm film of the same name, "Implicate Explicate" is a hypnotic series of waves and pulses that undulate with all the out of focus texture of a warped negative. The accompanying remixes put their own spin on things; Ekoplekz delivers a surprisingly beat-centric version, which nevertheless is as odd as everything else his does, while TVO creates a hypnotic slice of techno whose broken dubbiness makes it almost sounds like a lost Livity Sound cut. Paul Purgas finishes things off with a suitably grizzled version that sands off the original's smoother edges.

Between Sleep & Dreams
Review: Having already turned out one sublime collection of ambient musings for Apollo last year, Kasket returns to the label with four more captivating reflections that reach deep into composition and arrangement. Lead track "Warm Regards" glides elegantly from beatless blends of horn and synth through to loping brushed drums and piano that radiate the accomplished skills of the producer. "Give It A Name" meanwhile moves with a greater sense of purpose, a peppy broken beat meeting with pronounced musical motifs while staying true to the mellow nature of both artist and label. "Bad Connection" sounds altogether more distinct with its plucked notes and sparse, intriguing approach to chimes and rhythms, and "Between Sleep & Dreams" lilts on a softly swung jazz tip that rises and falls with grace.

Review: Delsin's Mantis series continues to dive into hidden corners of techno abstraction with this outstanding display from Italian producer Katatonic Silentio. Often found releasing albums on Ilian Tape, her approach to glitchy, exquisitely sculpted electronics translates perfectly to the immersive, dubby mode of the label, resulting in four elegant and original pieces that strike a balance between fragmentation and hypnotism. Whether it's the tense patience of 'To' or the loaded bass pressure of 'Hide' that draws you in, this is a record which will yield repeated discoveries whether you approach it as a passive listener or a curious selector.

Review: In advance of release, Diagonal and Elon Katz have been particularly mysterious when it comes to the contents of The Human Pet. Instead of the usual press release, they simply emailed journalists a bizarre list of "care instructions" for said mythical companion. Katz, who rose to prominence as part of Streetwalker and White Car, is something of a bombastic, electronic eccentric, and The Human Pet is ostensibly a pop album dragged through several hedges backwards. Expect impassioned, stylized vocals, twisted boogie synths, scattergun electronics, bizarre beats, breakcore style cut-up madness, and crusty special effects. Oh, and discernible nods to EBM, industrial and Autechre.

Electric World (4:08)
727 (instrumental) (3:52)
Electric World (extended version) (5:46)
Review: First released in 1986, "Electric World" was the debut single from Ryo Kawasaki and Satellites, a New York-based collective helmed by a computer programmer who built his own MIDI-workstation. Here it gets a timely reissue. It's an intriguing EP, with the title track - which is available in original mix and extended version form - offering a breezy, warm and (whisper it) Balearic mix of cheery synth-pop melodies, addictive female load vocals, dreamy chords, NYC freestyle ticks (the oft-used Fairlight orchestral stab) and beats that sit somewhere between electro and freestyle. Instrumental cut "727" continues on a similar theme, peppering a squelchy bassline and bustling machine drums with spacey chords and oodles of additional percussion sounds.

Review: Veteran Swiss born producer Kay Zee (Patrick Hollenstein) and the EP The Whole Shebang is released on Zurich based label Phantom Island. If you are looking for unique electronic music, then look no further than this little slice of wax that is limited to 20 copies. We really like the unique sound in 'Le Reve' with the experimental rhythm that combines dub and electro into a odd but slamming frenzy. Not to be outdone is the quirky electro of 'Strange Side Effects' or the catchy downtempo strangeness that is 'Inglisch'. 'Razor Sharp Boogie' covers the entire B-side with a cool, retro sounding jam. All and all, you have a very special 12" that sounds unlike anything out there. In this day in age, that is very special indeed.

Rumble (Actress Sixinium Bootleg mix - instrumental)
Review: Given that it was her first album for four years, and thus a comeback of sorts, it was something of a surprise to see Kelis' recent LP drop on Ninja Tune. While Food is a fine set, there's little of the frosty, scratchy experimentalism you might expect from such a leftfield hook-up. Step forward Actress, who delivers a brilliantly icy, glacial, sparse and melodic take on recent single "Rumble". Kelis' howling vocal sounds surprisingly good atop Actress's immensely beautiful and melancholic backing track. The heavenly instrumental is included, too, for those moments when Kelis' urgent delivery is just a little too much to handle.

Review: Kelpe's Fourth: The Golden Eagle was one of this summer's most pleasant surprises, seeing the veteran producer deliver one of most intricately crafted albums of the beatsmith's career. This remix 12" sees its languid melodies and off-kilter rhythms reworked by a number of like-minded names. Mike Slott transforms "Astrolomy" into a piece of warped pop, Debruit adds his skewed dancefloor touch to "Go Visible", Fulgeance transforms the slo-mo chug of "Beaks Of Eagles" into a pulsating synth epic and Chesslo Junior goes abstract hip hop with his rework of "Single Stripe". However, its Dam Mantle's remix of "Gliterlude" that really hits the spot, transforming the original's public information film vibe into full-on John Carpenter via EBM techno.

Barney's Dream
Review: London producer Kelpe has built himself a reputation for heavily textured slant on instrumental beats, first surfacing on DC Recordings and releasing three LPs and numerous singles through the iconic label run by J Saul Kane. More recently found impressing for the likes of Black Acre and Svetlana Industries, Kelpe signals a sea change with the launch of DRUT Records, his own label through which he will release a new album, cannily titled Fourth: The Golden Eagle later this summer. DRUT opts for a soft launch with this three track Answered 12? which sets the tone nicely for Kelpe's new LP and arrives just as the first rays of spring sunshine beam through the Juno office. Listen to the title track and it's no mere coincidence, a breezy beataholic's delight that feels like fidgety, unstable cousin to FaltyDL's recent ubiquitous number "Straight & Arrow".

Review: Following a fine solo EP from Jonas Friedlich, the Molten Moods label returns to type with another compilation style EP featuring a quartet of cuts from their growing roster of artists. Kessel Vale kicks off proceedings with the lightly melodic, becalmed electronic experimentalism of "Voguing Geisha", before Skee Mask unfurls the Autechre-does-deep-dubstep flex of "Fanta Ocean" with a little assistance from label co-founder Jonas Yamer. On the flipside, Konrad Wehrmeister layers drifting, melancholic melodies over heavy sub-bass and skittish electro beats, while Jonas Yehmer joins the dots between spaced-out dub techno and out-of-this-world ambient on "Insgeheim". Impressive stuff, all told.

Back To Vid (Azu Tiwaline remix)
Review: Romanian duo Khidja follow up their former release for Hivern Discs, 'Impossible Holiday', with a sequel of sorts. 'Something In The Water' blends 80s horror-soundtrack detunings with tropes from cold wave and balearic music, bringing an uncanny vibe to retro synthy stuff that, happily, can't quite decide whether it's disturbed or relaxed. 'The Future Has Disappeared' hears a ghostly voice meditating on the sudden Fisher-esque cancellation of time observed in recent years, while neo-tropical surges of sound peek through on 'Back To Vid'. 'Science Of Ghosts' works in sounds we never thought were humanly replicable over a restrained electro motif, while Azu Tiwaline explores a swampier midnight mood on their remix of the A2. A hauntologic gem from the Bucharestian bros.

Review: The second act of Bucharest-based duo Khidja, the deep-groove junkies' debut LP 'Transmissions Part 1 & 2' released earlier this year. Over the 76-minute runtime, the two delve into downtempo industrial, on 'Under Stressure' with its droning horns and spacey synths, to more traditional, analogue-influenced synthwave techno, 'Laid Back' sounding like a crazy circuit bypassing experiment from the bygone age of manual electro. Throughout the transmission, Khidja employs 90s tribal influences just as faithfully as 80s space-age synthpop tropes - like the trilling synth falsettos on epic closing track 'Oil'. Khidja have been proving in, and outside, of the club scene that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Hainbach - "Counterpoint" (1:28)
Review: Kilchhofer returns to the Marionette stable with another fuming, wide-eyed drone artillery alongside the equally capable, and perhaps yet more foreboding, sounds of Hainbach. Together, the duo extend the grey-scaled lights of the Little Mary Series, and Acosta manages to fuse both of their styles perfectly. Ambient is the energy at the core of all these tracks, but there's plenty of freeform movement throughout, and you will certainly not be faced with a solely beatless sway of harmonics. In fact, tracks like "Aska", "Russ" and "Uzala", all from Kilchhofer, have all the qualities to comfortably reside in any Balearic or downtempo set; the perfect way to open and evolve a DJ set beyond the confines of predictable 'deep' house. Hainbach's segments are made up of the same sort of chimerical energy, a subtle and euphoric ballad of melodies sown together by placid synth beats. Marvellously enchanting!

Review: In an age where hype is ever present, Laurel Halo seems to have the prodigious talent to justify the chatter that surrounds her every release on an increasingly impressive roster of labels. The New York resident already counts crucial US imprints RVNG and Hippos in Tanks in her discography, and this year sees her bewitching sound transplants to some of the most uncompromising UK initiatives. Soon to release an LP for Hyperdub, Halo adopts the King Felix moniker to open proceedings on Liberation Technologies, the newly minted "electronic" sub label of the iconic Mute empire. Arriving in an impressive die cut sleeve, the Spring EP suffuses all manner of musical influences in Halo's own intoxicating style across four "Spring" experimentations whose minute sonic details reveal with a sense of infinity the more you listen.

Anxiety (5:21)
Scatterbrain (4:53)
Data_Loss (6:06)
Data_Ctrl (3:59)
Review: Chris Weeks has been building up the Kingbastard catalogue for a long time now, generally taking a self-reliant approach in the underground electronica scene where CD-r releases reign supreme. He's been a key figure on Ambidextrous since the label launched back in 2008, and now he's committed to wax with a range of crunched up leftfield sonics for the machine-loving crowd. "Anxiety" is a melodic cut with a house-minded structure, but there's a lot of production acrobatics and compositional swerves taking place within this framework. "Scatterbrain" is more overtly out there, tapping up the kind of heavily processed sounds that producers like Paradroid have championed in the past. "Data_Loss" strike a heavy blow somewhere between dubstep and electro, and "Data_Ctrl" ups the tempo for a rabble-rousing exercise in mind-bending machine music.

Soda Caustic (5:14)
Synesthesia (3:01)
Daddy Acid (3:08)
The Roots Of Techno (5:01)
Antitune (feat Walmon) (4:16)
Review: Bulgarian house wizard KINK is back and, of course, he's all about delivering the shadiest forms of dance floor music humanely possible. The man is a master at twisting and pushing house music to its very limits, something which is obvious from the start of "Soda Caustic", a nutty 4/4 banger boasting a curious new strain of acid at its core. "Synesthesia" barely even forms a groove out of its solitary bleeps and bass buds, whereas "Daddy Acid" takes a little poke at AFX's improbable mishmash of Goa trance and gabber junglism - we love this one. The B-side boasts "The Roots Of Techno", a kinetic array of machine noise and robotic beats, while "Antitune" makes some of Photek's early work seem antiquated by comparison. This EP has it all. Warmly recommended.

Review: Started in 2013, Mollusca Vinyl is a Brooklyn based electronic reocrd label specializing in minimal style, analog laden music. Our folks believe in pushing the vinyl medium as art. This set of compositions has been described as Balearic downtempo with pastoral departures. Written while on several beaches, it suggests the definition of lackadaisical make out music, emoting euphoric post pillow talk feelings-of-the-raw through minimalist synth phrasing, ambient texturing and isolated beats. Artwork by Doroniyam at Azuri Cafe. Mastered by Jason at Transition Mastering UK. Printed at Brooklyn Phono.
