Funk
Funky Broadway (3:58)
You're My Baby (2:16)
Review: 'Funky Broadway' by The Villagers appeared on the well-received Movements Vol.12 compilation album and was a clear standout amongst standouts. As a response to that it now makes its long-awaited debut release on standalone vinyl. It's a soul-stirring gem that brings classic sounds and heart-melting grooves. On the B-side comes the red hot garage-rock gem 'You're My Baby (Don't You Forget It)' which is originally from 1966, and which coincided with Dyke & The Blazers' original recording of 'Funky Broadway' in the same year. Neat.

Review: The Voo-Dooms are back, ready to rattle bones and raise the dead with their signature trashy, Sci-fi Voodoo Caveman Garage Punk sound. Featuring garage-punk legends like Bruce Brand (Thee Headcoats, The Masonics), Dan Whaley (The Dustaphonics), Mark Braby (Vic Goddard & Subway Sect) and Mick Cocksedge (The Untamed), this lineup is a powerhouse of doom. Their latest four-track EP delivers pounding drums, fuzz-soaked guitars, rumbling bass and a dash of theremin. Expect a reworked 'Hangman Stomp' and a gnarly Electric Prunes cover. Review:  Darge curates a selection of US garage stompers from the 60s, blending the easily accessible with the rare and coveted. Aimed at both new listeners and seasoned collectors, the compilation features artists like the Hooterville Trolley, the Litter, the Music Machine, the Venturie "5", the Lyrics, and the Nightcrawlers. These tracks reflect the raw energy of the 60s garage scene and pay homage to the British invasion bands such as the Who, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones. With fuzzed guitars, driving beats, and a proto-punk attitude, the music feels fresh and is gaining traction with a new generation of fans. The compilation includes standout tracks like 'Action Woman' by The Litter, 'Hang It Out To Dry' by Bud & Kathy, and 'No Silver Bird' by The Hooterville Trolley. Housed in a sleeve designed by Robin Banks, who also created the artwork for Darge's Rockabilly compilation, this release is a visual and auditory treat. Liner notes from Keb Darge add a personal touch, making this an essential addition to any garage punk collection.

Review: A rock n' roll compilation with a twist, 28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox is a brand new selector's V/A LP from the 1990s Britpop figurehead and former member of the band Longpigs and Pulp. Diving deep into his personal collection here, this album reflects Hawley's absolute dedication to a pastime few may already know him for: slowly amassing a mammoth selection of 7" records in the mode of garage rock and skiffle. Many are instrumentals, flaunting Hawley's ear for a sound that goes beyond just lyricism or theme. With star cuts from the likes of The Timekeepers and Bobby Gentry, certainly do not miss this is if you're the the right kind of British rock obsessive.

Review: From an ardent blogger to an in-demand compiler, Paul Hillery's obsessive approach to music discovery has taken him far. As well as working with the likes of BBE, he's been fostering a working relationship with Re:Warm which now yields a second volume of the fantastic Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours series. The title is instructive, and somewhere in the folds of private press joints and forgotten album cuts Hillery finds a thread which binds together seemingly disparate sounds. There's delicate singer-songwriter seances from the likes of Lucy Kitchen and psychedelic, roving magic from Stallions remixing Findlay Brown and much more besides.

Review: The little known folk-funk genre does what it says on the tin. Here on this third volume in a wonderful series so far, compilation curator Paul Hilery does a fine job of portraying the best obscurios in the style, salvaging the very best of such flukily serene funk music and its stylistic cognates. Classic cuts from unlikely celestials such as Tim Green and Jeff Outterman are paired with case examples of neo-psychedelia, vocal raga, soft rock, and trip-hop, at once stretching the very furthest definitional corners of the term "funk" while making for a shimmering trip. Bobbi Keith's 'Give Me Time' has to be the highlight, coming agogo with chord-soaked backings and pealing electric piano, as Keith's nearly genderless voice flits over the mix.

Review: Masterful curator Paul Hillery returns with another essential instalment in this wonderful BBE series. Volume 3 continues his tradition of unearthing rare, high-quality tracks so it is a perfect companion to his Children of the Sun trilogy. This one spans funky folk, jazzy AOR, lo-fi dub and DIY folktronica and includes numerous gems like Sheila Chandra's ethereal vocals and Tim Green's euphoric grooves, a playful vibe from Gil De Ray on 'Something About Nothing' and plenty more besides. With extensive sleeve notes, this is a deep sonic journey that also cements the man behind it as an expert archivist.

Review: Once unsung but now enjoying a revitalised career as a compiler and curator, Paul Hillery began his musical journey as a tour DJ for The Polyphonic Spree. But even long before this, he'd a niche knack for tracking down obscure musical gems. The breadth of his curatorial talents are demonstrated once again on We Are The Children Of The Setting Sun, which has no explicit genre focus but sonically segues through folk, psychedelia, and new age obscurities - and only ones with the utmost pristine sound at that. From the beauteous harmonic dulcimers of Graeme Gash to the closing Chicago Soul paeans of Reggio McLaughlin, we're urged to "drop out to the musical pulse that unites us all."

Review: Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra infamy gets a Stones Throw "reworks-reissue" of his landmark debut solo record Hosono House, this time under the name Hosono House Revisited. Not a reissue per se but rather an exemplary case of an "interpretations" LP - in which favourite adjacent artists and contemporaries choose their favourite track from a given artist's discography, and do their best to capture their own subjective recorded responses to the song as they know it best - this version sees several musicians from the Stones Throw roster and beyond offer up their own interpretations of Hosono's songs. Leading the charge is John Carroll Kirby's 'Fuku Wa Uchi Oni Wa Soto', a mixable, much funkier and bubblegum-gobbed version of the originally kalimba-led, totally live-recorded track.

Review: The fourth studio album by English hard rockers Jethro Tull, Aqualung married a turning point in the career of the band, prepping them for a more major radio-friendly future that would see them become mainstays of the touring circuit and rank among the finest live acts of the time. It would also quickly become the group's most successful release, commercially speaking, producing two standout singles in 'Hymn 43' and 'Locomotive Breath'. With such a storied history, anyone going anywhere near Tull's masterpiece wants to tread carefully. Or throw themselves full pelt into the chaos and beauty of the record by inviting a load of stoner rock acts to do their best/worst/most imaginative on the original material and come up with something new. Magnetic Eye opted to do just that with Redux, and it hits hard.

Review: The limited edition double album Weird Scenes From The Hangout presents an exhilarating journey through psychedelic and freakbeat anthems that were the heartbeat of Liverpool's renowned mid-'80s club night, The Hangout. Released on striking Neon Pink and Transparent Curacao vinyl, this 2 x LP compilation curated by Richard Norris (The Grid, Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve) captures the vibrant essence of his club's eclectic soundscape. The album features a carefully selected roster of tracks from iconic acts like The Velvet Underground, Can, Captain Beefheart, The Seeds and The Left Banke, reflecting the diverse and energetic vibe that Norris fostered at The Hangout. This special compilation brings together floor fillers and dancefloor anthems that defined the psychedelic scene during the 1967-1982 period, meticulously licensed to recreate the magic of Norris's celebrated club nights. The Hangout, launched in autumn 1984 at Liverpool's Krackers club, was a haven for psychedelic enthusiasts and dance music aficionados alike. With its pulsating beats and psychedelic visuals, the club became a hub for revelry, featuring guest performances from bands such as Zodiac Mindwarp and The Cardiacs. Norris's vision was simple yet profound: to curate a dance experience that embraced both obscure and popular tracks, ensuring that every tune ignited the dancefloor. This reissue not only revives the spirit of The Hangout but also celebrates the enduring impact of its eclectic playlist. With remastered sound and original artwork, this compilation is a treasure trove for fans of psychedelic and freakbeat music, showcasing a pivotal era in Liverpool's vibrant club culture.

Review: Eddie Piller's first volume of British Mod Sounds of The 1960s went down a real storm so it's great that he has been commissioned to do another one. This second edition is another doozy with the Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder digging deep and turning out plenty of knowledge. Early on, British Mod bands were prone to knocking out American r&b sounds but they later evolved and took in influences from jazz-rock, prog, psychedelic soul and eastern melodies. This collection charts that musical evolution across four sides of vinyl including tunes by the OGs well as plenty of newly emerging stars from Bowie to Bolan.

Review: Eddie Piller Presents The Mod Top 40 revives the essence of '60s Mod music with a fresh twist. While many fans are familiar with the tracks, the story behind them is new and intriguing. Inspired by the Mod revival of the late 70s, Eddie delved into the original scene, guided by Randy Cozens, whose letters to music magazines in the pre-internet era led to the creation of the original Mod Top 100. Eddie's double vinyl set includes 40 essential r&b, soul, jazz and beat tracks plus personal picks for unavailable originals. This release honours Cozens' influence and offers a stylish, informative introduction to classic Mod sounds complete with new sleeve notes and track details.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Breaking from his directorial duties, American cinema auteur Eli Roth (Borderlands, Knock Knock, Green Inferno) stops by the CAM Sugar sound studio for a rare double 7" LP, pinching listeners by the ear and dragging them along a forbidden trail along the gothic, red-lit path that is Italian soundtrack legendariness. Drawing his selections here from a wealth of Italian B-movie expertise, not to mention ownership in his own collection, the contemporary horrorist has chosen 20 delicious but still downright saucy disco, bossa nova and psych tunes here, centring on the Italian Sexy Comedy softcore era of 1969-81.

Review: American splatter horror director Eli Roth curates a spicy and seductive collection of Italian soundtrack gems, offering a deep dive into the rich and often scandalous world of Italian softcore and sexy comedies from the 70s and 80s. With tracks spanning disco, funk, bossa nova, and psych, Roth draws upon the compositions of iconic Italian film composers like Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai, and Riz Ortolani. Highlights include Cipriani's infectious 'Nude Odeon (Ritmico Funk)' and Ferrio's sultry 'Quando Vuoi Con Chi Vuoi.' The collection, which also features rare and previously unreleased tracks, pulses with a heady mix of erotic tension and playful grooves. 'Amori Stellari' from Don Powell, with its cheeky synth-laden intro, adds a spacey touch, while Gianni Ferrio's 'La Musica E' effortlessly evokes the seductive atmosphere of 70s Italian cinema. Whether it's the funky disco beats of 'Avere Vent'anni (Disco)' or the dark allure of 'Il Sesso Del Diavolo,' each track feels like an invitation into an intimate, forbidden world. It's a soundtrack for lovers of cult cinema, irresistibly bold and full of character.

Review: Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have more than proven their music knowledge across a stellar run of prior compilations, including The Daisy Age, Fell From The Sun and English Weather. This time around, they're tapping into the freeform climes of the late 70s and early 80s, as punk exploded and a myriad of bands channelled the unique, downcast mood of Britain into wildly creative, nervously urgent songs. Across four sides we take in all manner of cult selections and outer limits largely in the loose fit realm of post-punk. It's flawlessly selected and programmed - another reminder of how immersive a proper compilation can be.

Review: Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne fame are the diggers behind this new rock assemblage which pays tribute to mid-afternoon set times at lesser-known festivals from years gone (well, the 70s) such as Deeply Vale, Bickershaw, Krumlin, Weeley, and Plumpton. They were just as important to those who attended as the more celebrated likes of Glasto' and this collection shows the sounds were just as good, too. The sounds - from big names liek Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw to lesser known acts like Jonesy, will appeal to hippies and bikers alike with big riffs, funky drumming and some psyched-out sounds.

Review: In this collection, Luke curates music with the perfect blend, inviting listeners on an esoteric journey of enlightenment through sound. Exploring late-night, after-hours musings; Everything Above The Sky (Astral Travelling with Luke Una) is a new compilation by the enigmatic DJ, promoter, and cultural curator. Following the E Soul Cultura phenomenon, this compilation comes at a pivotal moment in Luke's career as he travels the globe. Avoiding any chance of his sound being pigeonholed, Luke has assembled a tracklist that feels transcendental, stepping off the grid and back to source. Luke's Everything Above The Sky manifesto describes the music as Astral Travelling in the meadowlands with acid folk, spiritual jazz, midnight hocus pocus, cosmic psychedelic soul, magical whirling love songs, Brazilian ballads of light into machine soul gospel dreaming, Balearic bossa and Outer Space ancient African drums. Expect something different and highly unique with this listen.

Review: There's so much to admire about the borderless musical inclinations of the one and only Luke Una. A longstanding standard-bearer for nocturnal eclecticism, he's made an art out of pigeon-hole dodging, via event series like Electric Chair/Elephant and Homoelectric, his Worldwide FM residency, and E Soul Cultura compilations. His latest comp sees him explore sonic transcendence, selecting a body of musical curios based on their ability to transport the listener to higher realms. As expected, the album bursts with delightful, lesser-known morsels that make it more than worthy of attention. Opening with the psychedelic guitar swells of John Martyn's masterful 'Small Hours' before meandering into the blissful meditations of Stephen Whynott's 'A Better Way', drifting into the staccato whimsy of Sylvain Kassap's 'Plancoe' and arresting with the aching soul of Michael Gregory Jackson's 'Unspoken Magic', there are too many standouts to mention. This is an album to savour from start to finish, a means of cultivating inner peace and astral escapism. When it comes to digging chops, there aren't too many who measure up to Luke, and this selection serves as a case in point.

Review: Formed in 2015 by Cathy Lucas, Vanishing Twin is a fantastic band for those who love music that floats between real and imagined worlds. They have a fearless sound that take sin aspects of Afro, world, jazz, soul, funk and psych as well as lashing of dubby rhythms. This album came late last year and finally makes its way on to wax - in the meantime the band also dropped a cassette only album Pensiero Magico. This one is a more MPB and experimental take on rock and Latin with breezy grooves next to darker atmospheric tracks.

Review: Way back in 2004, Sanctuary Records commissioned pre-Britpop pop hipsters St Etienne member and serial compilation curator Bob Stanley to put together a collection celebrating the British 'acid folk' movement of the late 1980s and early 1970s. Long deleted, the previously CD only compilation is finally returning on vinyl - this time in expanded form, with the inclusion of additional tracks and a few picks from its (also unavailable) sequel. It's a superb set all told and one that showcases a take on folk heavy on effects, unusual rhythms, sweet vocals, horror-adjacent sounds and pastoral but otherworldly instrumentation. A few well-known names aside, it's a genuinely deep dive too - as you'd expect from someone of Stanley's knowledge and experience.

Review: The liberation of Mali from French rule in 1960 led to an explosive musical renaissance, and on this latest 2xLP compilation, Mr Bongo seek to remonstrate the nation's excellence in the face of much strife. After 1970, amid revived drives to document many national and regional music productions from the West African nation, Malian culture underwent a fertile transformation, with state-sponsored bands and orchestras able to record with sound engineers for the first time. Compiled by French writer and journalist Florent Mazzoleni and Mr Bongo's own David Buttle, we hear here the likes of Ousmane Kouyate & Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Rail Band, Les Messagers du Mali, Mystere Jazz de Tombouctou and many more, where bright, fuzz-packed tones whirl about our ears in serene squalls of balafon-driven funk, rumba, wassoulou, jeli and blues.

Despite its innovative approach, the label struggled due to the collapse of Stiff Records and the corporate dominance of the era. However, the label's influence lived on through Piller's Acid Jazz label and this compilation showcases the best of Countdown's legacy with plenty of classic tracks and rarities. It's presented with a stylish Modernist design that coincides with a book that delves deeper into its history.

Review: Bite-sized, and of an incalculable carat value, we're served a plate of Singaporean ear foods, with releasing label Akenaton homing in on the music scene of the 60s and 70s. Coinciding with the British invasion of ye-ye pop and beat music, which the Southeast Asian nation ate up with glee, we hear many singer-porean ladies backed by both duos and ensembles here, following up a scrumptious first edition. So recline, and let the fuzzy guitar tones and trebly songs of Li Li Wong, Lena Lim, Fung Po Po and Nancy Sit help you weather the worst of personal storms.

Review: A bold mission from RidingEasy Records, Brown Acid aims to find, catalogue and release - extremely rare (proto-metal, pre-stoner rock) - music that lacked highfalutin arty presence in their heydays. The 'Fourteenth Trip' in their seemingly inexhaustible supply of, ahem, chemical research albums, this comp charts lost songs from Blue Creed, Liquid Blue, Cox's Army and The Legends, all names nearly forgotten to time if it weren't for the efforts of high quality psych lover and collector, Lance Barresi.

Review: US label Now Again follows up the success of its recent Forge Your Own Chains compilation with another, and this time one that has never before be available on vinyl like this. It features a fine selection of small run private presses that are all incredibly hard to find or long out of print. The bands behind the music range from legends of the krautrock scene to Turkish teenagers to Icelandic prog-rock outfits, prison funk ensembles and even the uncle of E-40. It's real, raw and full of plenty of visceral funk thrills made between 1970 and 1975 but suitable for all occasions.

Review: Two-Piers is one of those very special imprints that has tasked itself with unearthing the kind of gems people who compile movie soundtracks only ever seem to be able to find. In the past, the label's compilations have focused on essay-worthy things like the evolution of French pop (1964-2019, no less), and but in this case the team turns its attention to a bonafide zeitgeist.

Calling everything here 'rare' would be overstating it - we have legendary household names in the form of Nina Simone, Willie Nelson, and Tim Buckley, to name but a few. But nothing here is an obvious choice, calling to mind a bygone age when you could still find yourself discovering new material by chart-toppers years after falling in love with them because access to everything was limited. Aligned by a feeling - late nights spent stargazing with equally obsessed musos - what's here is marvelously timeless.

Ah yes, the sensual and voluptuous pleasures of Middle-Eastern jazz on wax. Unmatched. The choice cuts on this comp, one of many from Mike, this time catalogue the works of Middle Eastern jazz unknowns, championing their work starting from the genre's inception.

As with the first round, it's Marco Pirroni from Adam & The Ants and Siouxsie & The Banshees making these selections, capturing the sounds heard between 1974 and 1976 by the impressionable young ears who would go on to shape the punk explosion. From The Animals to Max Bigraves, Nico to Burundi Black, this is a unique portal into the build-up to a world-shaking cultural movement.

Review: Ghost Riders has been dubbed Efficient Space's latest narrative compilation, putting together 17 folk, Americana and psych-blues rarities to tell a Jarmuschian tale of heartache and loss. Releasing select songs from near-forgotten names like The Tempters, Dennis Harte and The Newports, the songs on this compilation seem to tell a tale of teary-eyed, shattered rock n' roll dreams - exclusively recalling the work of artists who, in the label's own words, were buoyed by grandiose dreams shortly before life got in the way. Recalling desolate filmic scenes like those found in Mystery Train or The Afterlight, we've got a distinct portrait of a depressed American midwest here.

Review: There's a seemingly endless well of gnarly anti-flower power psych rock Riding Easy are able to tap into as they screech into their sixteenth volume of the kick-ass Brown Acid compilation series. The concept is tight, and if you dig on the sound you'll never tire of what's on offer here, whether it's The Seeds laying down a heavy-as-hell strain of distorted blues rock or the seriously funked up Nothing with 'Young Generation'. This is an authoritative peer into the nether regions of rock history and a thousand bands who never quite broke through to long-lasting success, but on these tunes they've got nothing to lose except their minds.

Review: Master compilation maker Greasy Mike is back with a fourth volume of his characterful selections. This one once again is another action packed and full flavour array of wigged out rhythms and psyched out funk sounds. The label calls it "14 Frantic Flippers Fraught with Frivolous Fun-Filled Frolics" and the tunes sure do have big personalities, wild laughter, sleazy low slung grooves and big steamy horns. In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.

Review: Once Again We Are The Children Of The Sun is a compilation of rare and obscure psychedelic rock, folk and jazz from all over the world. While little thematic centrality is present, the common thread between these selections is that they can surely be classified as wheat, not chaff, thanks to the curatorial power of one Paul Hillery. Artists both known and forgotten, such as Forest, Will & James Ragar, Greg Foat Group and Orion all hitch a ride on Helios' sonic chariot, delivering an intense psych-folk-funk album of much experimentation and weird synthwork.

Review: This movie from 1997 was, at the time, hailed as one of the greatest LGBT films of its era. That has not diminished in the years since and it is still much-loved flick that rightly solidified Wong Kar-wai's reputation and earned him Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. It's a classic that explores the sorrow of love-lost and identity struggles amidst Hong Kong's 1997 handover and the film's evocative soundtrack heightens the whole narrative. It features Caetano Veloso's 'Cucurrucucu Paloma' and Astor Piazzolla's 'Tango Apasionado' and perfectly underscores the emotional journey of lovers played by Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung, all set against the backdrop of Argentina. With handpicked live recordings, this beloved soundtrack remains a poignant complement to the film's exploration of heartbreak and self-discovery.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Hungarian outfit Budabeats proudly present Psyched Out Grooves From Hungary (1969-72), their latest compilation tracking the emergence and sure formation of psychedelic rock in Hungary. In the label's own words, "there were barely any drugs in Hungary to begin with", and we take this to be precisely the point. Psychedelia isn't a state that should rely on drugs as a crutch: no, there was something already dormant, but primed for the teasing, in the Hungarian psyche, that lent to its acquired taste for psych in the 60s and 70s. With contributions from "an undercurrent of smaller, semi-professional bands" who persisted in the shadow of a select few huge names, who dominated by dint of their sponsorship by the one, state-owned major label, this comp betrays an insider's knowledge and then some, with highlights from Non-Stop, Sampolo, Neoton, Apostol and Kex standing out as peak-quality Hungarian psych, despite none of these bands ever receiving a breakthrough. Such songs and bands were "the exception, not the norm", the "illusion of a scene".

Review: Calling a spade a spade and telling it like it is, the legendary Decca pans back over the archives to piece together a compilation that really takes us back to the very roots of the psyche scene and out into the glorious, technicolour, time-altering heyday of the movement. At a time when psychedelic sounds are having a big resurgence, it couldn't be better timed. This is way more than a cynical cash-in, though. Running through bands like the Small Faces, Moody Blues, Tintern Abbey and The Syn, many names here people either wouldn't associate with psyche today, or wouldn't have heard of unless they were very committed to diving into the deep annals of niche genres. Educational, and unarguably entertaining.

Review: The Apples in Stereo, Beulah, Circulatory System, Elf Power, The Minders, Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, and The Olivia Tremor Control. The list could go on, but our point will always be the same - whatever page you turn to first, the story of Elephant 6 is one of a sorely under-referenced musical universe of multi-genre music that's hard to move beyond once you find it. The 2022 documentary is testimony to that, and now the official soundtrack, featuring many of the loose collective's finest affiliates and associates, offers us a chance to take a broad selection home. And we really do mean broad. Lo fi garage rock, weirdo guitar, surf, rock 'n' roll, grunge, alt, leftfield and plenty more can be heard in this marvellous brew. A genuine delight from start to finish, this one's essential.

Review: Under The Bridge was a compilation of work by artists who had, at some point or another, recorded on the cult imprint Sarah Records. It should already be on your radar. If not, we recommend digging for it. Now here's part two, a 2024 update which takes that idea much further, presenting a more expansive track list and platforming some brand new projects to boot. Timeless stuff comes thick and, quite often, pretty fast, with plenty of driving garage rock to feel propelled by. Old favourites are here, for example Even As We Speak and Secret Shine, Action Painting! and The Hit Parade. And there are also new groups, such as Michael Hiscock of The Field Mice leading an act called Gentle Spring, and a collaboration between Mark Tranmer and James Hackett, both usually of The Orchids (who also appear on here), but recording as Vetchinsky Settings. A feast, basically.

Review: If you're going to enlist artists to cover tracks by NEU!, then you best make sure they are of the caliber we see on this track list. The legendary, iconic, and groundbreaking West German krautrock group only gave us three albums, all in quick succession (Neu! in 1972, Neu! 2 the following year, and Neu!75 in 1975), but they made a huge impact in doing so. As such their output could only be retreated with similar aplomb. A quick look on the back of the sleeve here proves someone, somewhere has heeded those words. Yann Tiersen, The National, Fink and more all line up to pay tribute to, and attempt to redirect, the original material. The results range from the rousing chorus and propellant, celebratory rock of 'After Eight' in its They Hate Change Cover form, to the sublime, lo fi folktronica of '4+1=5' by Alexis Taylor.

Review: The second volume of Wayfaring Strangers: Cosmic American Music delves deeper into the country rock genre that countered the rise of polished, suburban-friendly country rock like The Eagles. Featuring 20 tracks on two LPs, this collection captures the raw, independent spirit of Cosmic American Music, often overlooked in favor of more commercial successes. As country rock grew into a dominant force in the 1970s, many bands followed the Eagles' lead, softening the genre's edges. Yet, on the periphery, artists like F.J. McMahon, Mistress Mary, and Plain Jane quietly crafted their own versions of this roots-inspired music, blending gospel, country, and Southern soul. These lesser-known acts embraced Cosmic American Music's signature sounds, including pedal steel guitars and banjos, in their recordings. Big labels attempted to shape the genre's success, but Wayfaring Strangers focuses on the private press labels and forgotten gems that retained the original spirit Parsons envisioned. This compilation reconstructs the genre's history from its fringes, celebrating the raw, twangy essence of its early innovators.

Review: A new collection that documents a micro-niche of American baroque pop with a fresh new compilation. Diversifying the selection from, but still including, the most obvious figureheads in the style - Nico, Linda Rondstadt, even The Monkees - to also focus on the fulgurant but less visible sparks in the sound, such as Appaloosa and Eternity's Children, this is a record whose focus is on both greater and lesser objects of renown. The chamber orchestral instrumentation of the sound is made palpable; quaternary strings, harpsichords, woodwinds and autoharps abound, gelling neatly with the hip connotations of the genre's late 60s efflorescence.
