Futur (12")
Cat: FUNKSCAPES 007. Rel: 05 Jun 24
Colkin - "Via Marcomanni" (3:49)
Peter Seiler - "Timebend" (feat Sheryl Hackett) (4:32)
Eoism - "Ultraverse" (5:00)
Voertuig - "Cego" (5:19)
Voertuig - "808 Ambient Jazz" (3:45)
Eoism - "Even Flow" (5:45)
Review: Colkin from Raw Soul and Mauke Club sets the tone on this new FUTUR compilation, which has been curated by Benedikt Meger with a spherical acid house meditation. Peter Seiler's track, a standout from the reissue of his debut album Flying Frames, features Sheryl Hackett's soulful vocals and merges song structure with jazz improvisation. Eoism from Pulse Drift, Undersound, and Inch By Inch delivers low-swung electro flavours perfect for sunset vibes while the B-side opens with Voertuig of Tonal Oceans and Cobra Club who presents a seriously raw acid jam followed by an experimental, jazzy piece, reminiscent of the 90s downtempo era. 'Eoism' closes things with a floating, futuristic banger, going to make a well rounded (in more ways than one) and ultimately very useful piece of vinyl.

So Far Away
So Far Away (Coyote dub mix)
Review: Coyote and Peaking Lights form a perfect pairing on this latest drop of bliss from Is It Balearic? They are artists who are drenched in dub influences and that comes to the fore on this direct collaboration which marries swirling dub with dreamy vocals and ghostly acid arpeggios to bring to mind a serene sunset after a long, hot and lazy day. 'Love Letters' is pure horizontal bliss, 'So Far Away' gets even slower and will drown you in synth succulence and Coyote's dub mix is laden with soothing delays and warm bass that transports you to an exotic world of weed-laced wonderment.

Out Of Control (LTJ Xperience remix) (8:12)
Lazise (5:20)
Saocraffen (5:26)
Review: Intrallazzi and Dario Piana have been friends and Milanese scene contemporaries since 1981, when they both fell in love with the distinctive Afro-Cosmic sound of local DJ (and later Piana collaborator) Daniel Baldelli. Since then, they have both made records aplenty under a variety of aliases, but this EP on Leng marks their first joint release. The headline attraction is opener (and lead cut) 'Out of Control', a dubbed-out cosmic disco chugger propelled by echo-laden percussion and a deep, low-slung bassline, smothered in psychedelic synth and guitar sounds. Fellow Italian producer LTJ Experience remixes, offering up a stripped-back and acid-flecked interpretation. Elsewhere, 'Lazise' is a TB-303-sporting cosmic shuffler and 'Saocraffen' is a Baldelli-influenced fusion of Afro-cosmic funk and ethereal Balearic sounds.

Someone Like You (5:14)
Review: The Paradise Projex was created by ex-music director Phil Edwards and is a showcase of his years of experience as a musician, songwriter and producer. Combining soulful sounds with creative innovation, the project embraces an inclusive approach that leans on music's ability to unite minds across continents, cultures and even generations. This month sees the release of their new album I Am You, which includes the single 'Here & Now' and is a former number one on the UK Soul Breakers chart. Next to that comes this special 7" including two vinyl exclusives - 'Magic Night' and 'Someone Like You' are fine soul, nu-jazz and broken beat twisters.

Still Waiting (Brian Not Brian & Piers Harrison 'Like A Version' Disco Dub No.4) (6:39)
Always Liked Scarecrows (7:16)
Eavesdropper (5:47)
Review: Hilarity ensues with Miles J Paralysis and his new 'Folktronic' EP. Brought to the Leeds-based label Crying Outcast, this is an authentic crock of real dancefloor experimentations by the debuting artist, furthering our sense that this West Yorkshire city's contribution to dance music history an indelible one. Here, one can really hear the admixture of humour and attention to detail gone in, with dark-comedic label name matching tongue-in-cheek-microgenre-used-in-title, which mocks the Four Tet populariser style. We were surprised to hear, then, a relative lack of dulcet arp twinkles set to tricky fidget-tech house here, as is the "folktronic" sensibility. Instead, 'Still Waiting' and its corresponding Brian Not Brian and Piers Harrison dub bring a much headsier, erudite, lettered sound, with trippy didgeridoo design marking the opener and wonkier speed-plods following on the remix. 'Eavesdropper' plays on the Leodian favourite that is chug music, with reverso-yearny pads alternating away in the back, while 'Always Liked Scarecrows' makes titular use of the kind of offhand, fieldside observation many daydreamers like us often use: uncanny mock 303s, dubbing martial arts.

Volt To Volt (40 Thieves remix) (8:06)
Review: Since 2013, Brighton & Barcelona duo Payfone have been crafting atmospheric, mid-tempo grooves on respected labels like Golf Channel, Leng and Defected. Their latest track keeps up their quality levels as a synth-driven, drum-machine-powered journey featuring deep Moog bass and striking vocals. On the flip, San Francisco trio 40 Thieves aka Corey Black, Layne Fox and Jay Williams provide a remix that is patient, slow-burning and underpinned by an undulating acid line. It's a moody, sultry production that continues Payfone's knack for sophistication and late-night allure.

Review: Neoclassic acid-from-garage movements from Peter Reilley aka. Persian, a favourite of the UK dance music scene since as long as anyone can remember. For 20 years, Reilly has gone his own way, operating in and on genre after genre, up-peggable as he is adept, blending breaks, digidub, electro, garage, house, and jungle across a repertoire of no less than 50 EPs. Though this release serves as his farewell, as Reilly formally steps back from music production, it beautifully showcases his skill in programming, with 'Questions 2' proving a sleight hand for twinging post-funk leads, and 'Questions 7' bringing unprecedented sci-fi desolations to an erstwhile jam-funky tune collection.

Review: Phooka, aka Francesco Maddalena, is the co-founder of Concrete alongside Maurizio Cascella and a respected producer. He has released music on his own label and collaborated with labels like Diffuse Reality, Warok Music and Blackwater and here offers up two originals. 'False Flag' is a deep, meaningful techno cut with sparse elements making for an eerie vibe over a loopy, floating rhythm. 'The Rug Pull' is just as dubby and murky with shards of light and texture occupying your mind. Remix duties on this release are handled by Sweden's Anthony Linell, the renowned Northern Electronics label boss who is known for his work with Adiel on Danza Tribale and he shows his class once more with two more sublime soundscapes.

The Most Balearic Record In The World
Balearic Sex Beat
Review: In an era where "Balearic" is a hotly clamoured-over designation, and in which a maelstrom of producers vie for their music to "nail" the Balearic sound, in pursuit of a reemergent clout, Harri Pierson marks himself out among the throng with the title 'The Most Balearic Record In The World'. The sense of knowing irony is both palpable and apt for the genre, which in style refuses to take itself too seriously; this is only bolstered by the equally humoured, fly-on-the-wall B-side title 'Balearic Sex Beat' too. The former track blends debonair vocal breaths and croons with thrumming bass and ploddings, while the latter pares things back for an extended dub, upon which only the faintest erotic, verging on salivary excitations are heard overlaid.

1000 Mile Drift (Adrian Sherwood mix) (5:47)
A Doubtful Sound (Adrian Sherwood 10" dub mix) (3:49)
Review: Adrian Sherwood lends a generous remixing hand to the label Dubmission and their flagship productions duo come solo artist Pitch Black (Mike Hodgson), producing an effects-laden leap through four dub drastics all based on original music first recorded by Mike. This is an exemplary case of "don't meet your heroes" being disproven, as 'Echoes Of The Night' and its filial sonic friends all worked as source material for an anything but disappointing remix bundle by Sherwood. The opening 'Transient Transmission' version is lilting enough, but the gears really get meshing on 'Third Light', which brings a turntablist's whistle, a wet yet naked guitar, and a dubstep flavour to things; finally, B-siders 'A Doubtful Sound' and '1000 Mile Drift' deconstruct things to complemetary effect, effecting dually electric Lee Perry vocals and halved trumpet importunes, the latter of which is heard set against a conspiratorial vocal sample.

Review: Pleasure Planet has enlisted some fine artists to reimagine two standout tracks from their debut album. Earth Trax turns 'Go With Madness' into an exhilarating and euphoric anthem that will blend surprises and smiles when this peak-time dancefloor bomb gets dropped. Maara accelerates the tempo by diving deep into prog-inspired proto-trance. Roza Terenzi transforms 'Alien 'with ghostly melodies, hypnotic hooks and sizzling breakbeat electronics, while Alex Kassian's Sphinx Gate Mix slows the pace, infusing 'Alien' with Hacienda-era nostalgia, melodic arpeggios and emotional basslines that leave a tender vocal touch from Kim Ann's partner in its fading moments.

Review: The split 12" from East London's Portico Quartet and Polish pianist Hania Rani exemplifies how simple ideas can yield remarkable results. Each artist reworked the other's track, with impressive outcomes. Portico Quartet transforms Rani's 'Nest' into a dreamy, ethereal jazz piece, featuring undulating analogue synths, immersive chords, and floaty vocal samples carried by languid jazz drumming. Rani's take on Portico Quartet's 'With, Beside, Against' is even more striking. Her version, minimalistic and sparse, introduces twinkling piano motifs and her evocative vocals, creating a slowly unfolding, cinematic jazz experience. Both interpretations are nothing short of stunning.

Review: Vibe is back with more versions of Portishead classics from the mysterious Portishedd moniker. This latest 7" is a green slab with 'Glory' and 'Roads'. The A-side, like the B-side, is a remix from Kero Uno and it brings a swaying Latin feel and broken beats to the classic original vocal which rings out with a pained soul next to the eerie synths. 'Roads' is then a more late night and deep sound with the uneasy vocal whispers unfurling over lurching beats and swooning string sounds. It's a fine rework that is brilliantly atmospheric.

Everybody's Gotta Learn (12:00)
Review: Psychemagik return with their signature knack for transforming pop classics into deep, genre-blending journeys of electronic music. Their latest offering showcases their ability to take familiar tracks and reimagine them in a way that feels fresh and immersive. The first track is a vibrant, calypso-infused rework of a classic pop song, effortlessly blending disco, house and island instrumentation. The result is a classy instrumental version that radiates warmth and groove, making it perfect for both dancefloors and laid-back listening. On the flip side, the duo takes another beloved 80s hit and takes it into new sonic territories. This remix is deep and atmospheric, turning the original into a trippy, spacious experience that feels futuristic yet timeless. Psychemagik's remix elevates the track, adding layers of psychedelic textures and a subtle sense of grandeur, while maintaining the emotional core of the original. With this release, Psychemagik continue to demonstrate their mastery of pushing boundaries, seamlessly blending retro influences with modern, forward-thinking production.

Review: Luv Shack's compilation style 'Disco Biscuits' series is the very definition of reliable, with each new EP delivering killer cuts aimed at the more cosmic end of nu-diusco dancefloors. Volume five in the series arrives with four more tried-and-tested workouts and little in the way of forgettable filler. This collection celebrates obscure gems, many self-released or privately pressed, uncovering hidden talent from different eras and regions. Opening with Linda Waterfall's 'Clarity', a 1970s spiritual jazz-tinged folk piece, the album features tracks like 'Follow My Heart' by Sebastian, a soulful, sax-filled soft rock tune, and Frank E. Review: Returning, Dream, the sophomore album from Jack Wyllie's Paradise Cinema, blends the rhythmic intensity of African percussion with ambient textures and electronic influences. Created in London with contributions from Dakar and Sydney, the album draws inspiration from the Many Worlds theory of quantum physics, where each decision branches into new possibilities. This concept mirrors the album's abundant rhythmic diversity, led by hand drums like the tama, sabar, and surdo, played by Khadim Mbaye, Tons Sembe, and Laurence Pike. Wyllie's use of woodwinds, reeds, and synthetic layers creates a lush soundscape. The title track, 'Returning, Dream', revolves around hypnotic flute loops and ritualistic rhythms, while 'Tide' recalls Steve Reich's minimalism with delicate metallic chimes and dizzying, ecstatic patterns. 'Night Search' blends saxophone skronk with North African tonalities, invoking the trance-like riffing of the Master Musicians of Joujouka and the spiritual heights of Pharoah Sanders. 'A Morning In The Near Future' is mellow and meditative, while 'Nowhere, Home' offers a noirish, Blade Runner-esque atmosphere. Wyllie's Returning, Dream is a bold, genre-blurring journey that merges global rhythms with innovative soundscapes.

Review: Ultra-vintage reissued psych-pop from Parsley Sound, whose self-titled debut for Mo Wax was one of the label's most prized releases, and yet ended up massively inflated in price due to early sellouts and low pressing numbers. The duo / band made up of Danny Sargassa and Preston Mead are deft emulators of full-band sonics, producing the illusion of a wider ensemble; Parsley Sounds followed the early EPs 'Ease Yourself And Glide' and 'Twilight Mushrooms', but was comparatively much softer on the ears, charming the listener with its herbal pan flutes, downtempo era string segments, and not-too-heavy 70s throwback haunto-pysch cult propulsions. Clearly an early influence of now colossal cognates of the sound like Caribou and Four Tet, Parsley Sounds is essential heads' listening for those who wish to lead a certain uncanny, chintzy still life, yet who also know something of the restless beauty of said life. A5er 'Ocean House' is the expansive ballad that proves this, finding a lo-fi yet cavernous vocal opportunity in an otherwise claustrophobic cranny of sound.

Review: Inspired by his neon-lit walks around London's docklands, crate digger Ilan Pdahtzur's 2019 compilation Night City Life marked him out as a dusty-fingered crate digger and record collector with a distinctive, synth-heavy musical vision. It made him the toast of the selector/collector community, but more than that it was a genuinely superb selection of obscure, hard-to-find cuts. This belated sequel is every bit as essential and filled, unsurprisingly, with rare and lesser-known gems. Highlights are too plentiful to mention, but our current favourites include Sharon & Tracey's 'The Sheik' (a belly-dancing inspired slab of TB-303 bass-driven house hedonism), Jennifer's 1992 Euro-house gem 'Come Into My Life', Scicilian musician Claudio D'Ignoti's boogie-era treat 'Ache Per Noir', and the fashion scene inspired leftfield synth-pop of Lena's 'Embrasse-Moi (Strumentale)'.

Review: Pacifico is the debut album from Italian-born, LA-based multi-instrumentalist Francesco Perini under the Pearz guise. It tracks a five-year sonic journey through Florence, London and Los Angeles and takes in all the sounds of those places so blends disco, electro, nu-jazz and Japanese City Pop into a rich, genre-spanning sound. True to its name (Pacifico means "peaceful" in Italian) the album captures the reflective calm of travel's end and has collaborations with artists like Kuntessa, VANBASTEN, Natalie Findlay, Jules Apollinaire and others bringing their own depth to the project. The result is a multicultural tapestry of sound that is full of warmth, groove and introspection.

Review: Photay aka. Evan Shornstein makes a determined return with Windswept, his latest LP for Mexican Summer. Building on but also somewhat departing from a built repertoire of post-IDM come funky sonics, this latest outing moves in a slightly more new age direction, riffing on the many possible worlds implied by the episteme of "Balearic". On an album nominally about the wind, and with an express aim to "mimic the wind", Photay makes deft use here of everything from wind chimes to blustery transigent noise, working them all between chunks of girded downtempo and confident chugs. Still as percussive and tricksy as ever, Shornstein echoes the likes of Letherette and Throwing Snow, meeting both hot and cold fronts of thermostatic dance.

Review: Initially released back in 2007 and now repressed for new audiences as well as enduring fans, Pitch Black's fourth album was possibly their best yet. Rude Mechanicals blends dance music and electronica with their signature mix of echoes, delays and deep basslines to brilliantly alluring effect. Kicking off with the lush 'South of the Line,' it progresses into tracks like the dub-heavy '1000 Mile Drift' and the high-energy 'Sonic Colonic.' 'Bird Soul' nods to Salmonella Dub's influence while 'Harmonia' delivers exquisite electronica. The title track features rapper KP addressing environmental destruction and things close with 'Please Leave Quietly'. Complex rhythms, warm bass and haunting melodies with sharp social commentary all make this a genre-busting bit of work.
