Melvo Baptiste - "Sweat" (feat Dames Brown) (6:09)
Lovebirds - "Burn It Down" (club mix) (7:42)
Art Of Tones & Inaya Day - "Give My Love" (6:22)
Young Pulse & Fleur De Mur - "Smooth Sweet Talker" (6:53)
Review: Get yourself geared up for festival season with some fierce party starters certified with the Glitterbox stamp. Melvo Baptiste leads the charge with 'Sweat', a sizzling disco house stomper with Dames Brown giving the biggest diva energy on her show-stopping vocal. Lovebirds bring unbridled joy on the Philly string swoon and slinky b-line funk of 'Burn It Down', while Art Of Tones & Inaya Day keep it peak time on the sassy strutter 'Give My Love'. Young Pulse & Fleur De Mur complete the set with 'Smooth Sweet Talker', another bright and bold vocal cut par excellence.

U Be Mine (Italo Deviance Acid Control mix) (8:06)
Review: Eddie C, the maestro of the Red Motorbike label, delivers a euphoric ode to the pursuit of love and desire. It features a quartet of interpretations, including remixes from Lex, Da Silva and Italo Deviance, each adding their own distinct take on the original, with Eddie C's 'Cash Version' proving to be a dancefloor-ready gem, its lyrical bassline, euphoric stabs and pining vocals creating a silken rhythm. Lex's Plaka Remix injects an exotic, eclectic spirit, with shuffling percussion and breezy strings adding a touch of Balearic charm. Da Silva's remix ups the ante with a club-focused intensity, its tight kicks and searing acid lines perfect for peak-time moments. Italo Deviance's Acid Control version takes things into a more psychedelic realm, its kaleidoscopic soundscapes and driving rhythms conjuring a nocturnal energy.

That Girl (3:29)
Wish You Were Here (3:57)
Review: Boogie Back Records have been going consistently since the early 90s, serving as a rare case of a label whose relentless output helps blur the lines of "boogie" and "neo-boogie". And while an increasing sanitation of sound might often be associated with most generic "neos", Ernie & The Family Mckone prove this wrong on their latest 7", 'That Girl', whose sound is as tight yet live as ever. Fronted by Boogie Back label owner, singer, producer and guitarist Ernie Mckone (aka. "The Great Ernesto"), this record is a family affair in aspirate vocals and finger-clicking beat bounces. The A-side hears Mckone aim to relieve a lover from pain by keeping a secret, and the B slangs lower on a near-variation of the same beat, albeit the lyrics carry a deep saudade.

If It Ain't Jazz Vol 4
Cat: IIAJ 004. Rel: 26 Feb 25
You're A Star (Laroye rework) (6:57)
Let The Music Play (Aroop Roy rework) (7:19)
Review: If It Ain't Jazz, we don't know what it has! Back, after a punctuated pause, the label return to dazzle us with their enduring, distinctive brand of instrumental disco-soul razzmatazz, and here we hear Laroye and Aroop Roy rub two heads' choices up the right way, both into phattened, globular, kick-boosted anthems. First comes 'You're A Star', an electroni-cization of Aquarian Dream's 1978 disco explosion, to which Laroye brings much extra shimmy and sway. Then there's Roy's 'Let The Music Play', sampling an unknown (to us) number that - don't get caught off guard - certainly *isn't* Shannon's freestyle hit from 1983. Whatever it is though, it's a banger too!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped***

Late Nite Tuff Guy's Soul Cut #04 offers three expertly crafted edits that breathe new life into classic 70s tracks, blending disco, jazz, funk, and pop into a seamless listening experience. On Side-1, 'Beijo' sets the tone with a smooth, disco-infused reimagining of Earth, Wind & Fire's classic interlude. The track has a light funk undercurrent, creating a vibe that's perfect for dancing all night, with a Balearic twist that adds a fresh touch to the original. Side-2 kicks off with 'Sunshine,' a tasteful edit of Roy Ayers' iconic 'Everyone Loves the Sunshine.' Late Nite Tuff Guy maintains the soulful essence of the original while adding his own groove, making it a perfect summer anthem. The EP closes with 'U Got It Bad,' a rendition of Stevie Wonder's 'You've Got It Bad Girl,' reworked into a smooth, jazzy track that's both nostalgic and timeless. An excellent 12" for fans of classic disco, funk and jazz, with a modern twist.

Felt Bat (Yu Su Propelled version) (4:47)
Review: The one and only Phillip Lauer continues his flawless sonic journey on 'Seventy Seven Zero Zero Seventy Seven'. The Frankfurt-based producer never puts a foot wrong, as his ever-morphing club sound moves through undulating sonic landscapes. His latest effort features a pair of originals coupled with inspired guest remixes, covering a fair few dancefloor bases. The title track features a hypnotic vocal hook soaring through dreamy pads, pulsing acid bass and plucked guitar, before Khotin ramps up the acid and toughens the drums for a slightly more robust rework. We enter new wave territory on 'Felt Bat', with a bassline that would make Peter Hook proud, euphoric synths and snare-driven rhythms. Yu Su steps up on remix duties, transposing the track deep into heads-down territory, as rolling breaks power paranoid drones and psychedelic synth lines across an immersive nocturnal trip.

A Space Of My Own (Dexter Wansel Tribute) (12:11)
Mr Sporty (Time Traveler Re-Imagined mix) (9:35)
Mr Sporty (Drums & Life mix) (5:41)
Review: In the world of house music, it's often the B-sides - more adventurous or deeper alternatives to the peak-time-focused lead cut - that often last the test of time. It's a conclusion that Vick Lavender has come to, at least, because this limited-edition EP marks the first in a 'B-Sides Series' in which all cuts are bonuses, alternate takes or 'tributes' to other artists. He begins by paying tribute to Dexter Wansel on 'A Space of My Own', layering dense hand percussion, spacey electronics and intergalactic synth sounds over a rock-solid kick-drum pattern. He then slams down two versions of the King Sporty sampling 'Mr Sporty': the sax-squelch-and jammed-out keys-heavy brilliance of the 'Time Traveler Re-imagined Mix' and the more leisurely, synth solo sporting deep house warmth of the 'Drums & Life' version.

X-Ray Eyes (extended Trash Can dub) (9:50)
Review: The latest awakening from DFA Records hears James Murphy and company lift but a single little finger, precipitating an avalanche of anticipation, as this is their first material in three years. First premiering on NTS to clamorous acclaim, the band's first release since 2022 comes with minimal promo text, and packs bubbling synths with grinding drums, creating a familiar yet refined sound. Echoing the band's early style, it now comes on an exclusive 12" inverted by the 'Extended Trash Can Dub', which brings found, street-larked spring-sound, and vision-questing whispers, to a stomping indie romp, a potentiality promised but not entirely delivered by the original track.

Review: Tapping vocalist Latrell James on Bostonian vox duties, Live A Little dishes out a deep 12" and promises to deliver it straight to our doors, not unlike pizza delivery. Across a woodfired record, we're assured we've "got it good", with an initial "get it, get it, good" sample rounding out a ferrety lead beat, as "cribs" and "crooks" are further concept-checked by James. Caserta flips the A with a melodious meander on the B-side, lifting the record from its opening certis of loose-slung 4x4s and haggard textures for a reversion that brightens, smoothens and softens everything out, as if to say, "chop-chop!".

Calling Out (7" edit) (5:39)
Calling Out (7" edit instrumental) (5:35)
Review: Former Paper Recordings artist Sophie Lloyd apparently started working on "Calling Out" whilst gripped by the January blues. Her intention was simply to make "happy music". To that end, she turned to her gospel roots. The results, shared here on 7" single for the first time, are little less than spectacular. With collaborator Dames Brown in tow, Lloyd's vocals - accompanied by a gospel choir, of course - simply soar above a jaunty, piano-heavy track rich in live instrumentation. It sits somewhere between traditional gospel, house and disco, with a flipside instrumental brilliantly showcasing the quality of the instrumentation throughout. The piano solos, in particular, are breathlessly good.

FFFrreak (4:05)
Review: Wow! Of all the melancholic modern disco we've come across this year, this has to be the best so far, though we're surprised its popularity hasn't metastasised in size since its original Rysque Records release back in 2013. Ben Johnson and Tim Tucker make up Love Cryme, and their works combine a localist Sacramento slapper sound and a hissing, reel-to-reel feel. Compared to their Star Creature debut which brought measured but still potent titrations of purple sizzurping G-funk, 'Get It On' goes for a more minimally classic disco-soul cruise, with a sloppily gated snare and two-tone tearjerker preluding a neurotic but decadent vocal line from Tucker, as libidinous synths swell out uncontrollably from below.

Boogie Down (7:56)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped***

The Gamm label has seemingly been around forever. It is known mostly for its run of edits and hip-hop but has recently got back to its roots with more Latin and disco sounds. Love Drop is a frequent player on the label who now comes back with another sizzling two-tracker. Up first is the bright and house-tinged disco stomper 'Journey Into You' which is a great reinterpretation of the Leon Ware classic. On the other side is his take on a Roy Ayers number that is mad infectious - 'Boogie Down' has restless drum funk and big horn energy with a great vocal hook.

Gotta Dance (5:19)
I Need Your Love (6:35)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record slightly warped***

More edit action from Richy Ahmed and Jansons' hush-hush Lovehrtz project, which has previously seen them given the disco-house treatment to tracks by Gino Soccio and The Supermen Lovers, amongst others. Volume three of the self-titled series opens with "Gotta Dance", a loopy chunky of synth-heavy Euro-disco-goes-house cheeriness rich in undulating electronic lead lines, echoing drum hits, arpeggio style bass and a sparkling female lead vocal. Their Italo-disco influence is explored further on muscular flipside "I Need Your Love", a sweaty late-night affair in which selected male and female vocal snippets, and ear-catching melodic motifs ride a thrusting electronic bassline and all-action mid-80s drums.

Review: New Zealander Lucola Bang may have started his musical journey in Wellington, but these days he resides in Los Angeles. It was there that he recorded this debut mini album, a gorgeous, intricately produced and musically rich affair that does a great job in setting out his sonic agenda. Beginning with the luxurious fluidity of 'Devereaux', where meandering spoken word samples shuffle across spacey jazz-funk synths, heady hand percussion and jazz horns, the Kiwi producer delivers a swathe of superb cuts that mix and match elements of dub, slow-motion deep house, synth-soul, intergalactic Balearica, analogue-rich nu-disco and oddball, hard-to-categorise soundscapes. It's a thoroughly immersive and far-sighted affair all told.

Review: Detroit-raised, London-based Demi Riquisimo assembles a dynamic mix of label favourites and fresh talent on Love State, the 22nd release from his Semi Delicious imprint. This six-track V/A hears offerings from Demi himself alongside Clint, Swoose, Lulah Francs, Dukwa, Anastasia Zem & Asa Tate, blending club modernity with classic analogue dance influences, sampling every sonic cate from Italo to tech house. Best among the bunch has to be Swoose's 'Re/Vision' and Anastasia Zems' 'Eternal Beauty', which bring together wasted electro, Italian new beat and trance for well-measured tinctures of dreaminess.

Review: Turin's Bunkereeno Kollektiv and ITALIA90 have come together to launch their own new label Anna Records and it debuts with a split EP from Tools 4 Seduction and Lachina. The Argentinian former goes first with the Italo-infused sound of 'Like on VHS' full of dreamy chords and retro-future drums. 'Choruscan' is brighter and happier with cheery chords and a wonky baseline brings the vibes. On the B-side, Lachina who hails from Turin flips the vibe with more strident disco-techno sounds and direct cosmic energy on 'Out Of The Past'. His 'Metallic Rain' then brings flashy synth arps and a speedy intergalactic groove.

It comes hot on the heels of some sublime Soviet jazz-funk sample madness on previous works and it's again, it's a proper masterclass in production. These are deep-cut funk sounds with cooling organ chords, hints of Money Mark vibes and psyched-out synths, wah-wah guitars and plenty of rawness to keep things authentic and timeless. The jazzy flutes of 'Bokeh' make it one of our favourites here but there isn't a single bad jam, truth be told.
