Chicco - "Chomesa" (5:03)
Review: So many of the compilations that BBE put out are vital history lessons as well as great listening experiences. This one is another case in point as it finds music historian, DJ and daytime party promoter John Armstrong - who has put together more than 200 compilations - digging deep to offer up an alternate take on the famous bubblegum sounds that came out of Black South Africa towards the end of the apartheid years. Yebo! Rare Mzansi Party Beats from Apartheid's Dying Years is a superb showcase of diverse sounds created by the youth of the day as a means of escape. There is already talk of a second volume, which we're very much ready for after hearing this one.

LillyGood Party!: A Selection Of Really Really Good Grooves
Alex ATTIAS / VARIOUS
Cat: BBE 449CLP. Rel: 08 May 18
Freeez - "Stay" (6:14)
Cro-Magnon - "Midnight Magic" (feat Roy Ayers) (6:10)
Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks - "Cascade" (5:20)
Root Soul - "My Dream Came True" (6:12)
Grooveman Spot - "Do The Dance" (6:27)
Material - "Over & Over" (with Nona Hendryx) (5:30)
Nicole Willis - "Curiosity" (Zanzibar remix) (5:56)
Sunaga T Experience - "It's You" (Disco Alert mix) (6:38)
Review: Capturing the essence and feels of the long-standing event he runs in his Swiss hometown of Lausanne, veteran digger and selector Attias presents a brand new compendium of sweet compositions that sum up he's at creatively and spiritually. Gems on gems on gems: highlights that we guarantee will appeal to your good tastes and dancefloor include the hypnotic vibraphone wash of Cro-Magnon's "Midnight Magic", the slept-on jittering funk of Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks's "Cascade" and Material and Nona Hendrix's ludicrously funky, ultimately sleazy slinker "Over & Over". We suspect you'll be playing this record over and over, too...

Soul In The Hole
Sadar BAHAR / VARIOUS
Soul In The Hole (unmixed CD)
Cat: BBE 165CCD. Rel: 07 Nov 12
Johnny Harris - "Odyssey" (part 1)
Calender - "Comin' On Strong"
Poetiquette - "Soul Melody" (Yam Who? remix)
Maxayn - "Bail Out"
Seawind - "Free"
Moses - "Striving For Tomorrow"
Puzzle People - "French Fried Boogie"
Sparkles - "Trying To Get Over"
Carl Grubbs - "Scorcher" (instrumental)
Chuck Higgins & The Wild Bunch - "Funkyfield"
Carlos Garnett - "Mystery Of Ages"
Sonny Stitt - "Tornado" (feat Eddie Russ)
Frederic Mercier - "Spirit"
Review: Few can match BBE when it comes to the funk and disco compilation stakes - the label's been issuing killer compendiums curated by some of the finest and most eminently knowledgeable DJs and diggers since the mid 90s. Soul In The Hole sees them hand the controls to Sadar Bahar, Chicago based DJ described by BBE as the city's "best kept secret". Bahar began DJing in the early 80s, a historically important time for music in Chicago and states he was driven by an "unquenchable desire to create one of the best collections ever". This 12 track compilation demonstrates Bahar has achieved that with aplomb, traversing through a colourful range of funk, soul, disco and boogie, with Frederic Mercier's "Spirit" a real gem.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight tear to the top of the outer sleeve, product unopened and in perfect condition***

After almost a decade, Al Kent has decided to re-launch his acclaimed series of personal re-edits, "Disco Demands". He's clearly been itching to share his most successful disco reworks, because "Part 6" is an all action affair packed to the rafters with high-grade treats. You'll find the same material mixed together on one disc and in DJ-friendly unmixed form on the other. Highlights are plentiful, from the stretched-out, extra-percussive build-ups of Kent's revision of Ava Cherry's "You Never Loved Me" and the flanged guitar goodness of his extended revision of George McCrae's "Givin' Back The Feeling", to the high octane disco-rock thrills of Jo Bisso's "I Wanna Love" and the delay-laden late night sleaze of JD Hall's piano-powered "Wonder Woman".

Disco Dub Band - "For The Love Of Money"
Review: Given the depth of his record collection, you'd expect crate-digging hero Andy Smith to be able to put together a rather good disco and boogie compilation. That's exactly what he does here. Named after his disco-themed DJ collective, Reach Up does a great job in joining the dots between familiar anthems (Disco Dub Band's "For The Love of Money", World Premiere's "Share The Night", Freedom's break-diggin' fave "Get Up & Dance" and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk smash "Holding Me Tight") and slightly deeper, often overlooked selections (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). Smith's mix on disc one is typically smooth, entertaining and on-point, while the unmixed second disco offers an opportunity to own the same cuts in full-length, DJ-friendly form.

Review: It would be fair to say that Bristolian selector Andy Smith has extremely deep crates. It's for this reason that he's been responsible for tons of killer compilations over the years. This one, the second in his disco, boogie and proto-house focused "Reach Up" series, is another gem. It cheerily moves between disco old and new, mixing tried-and-tested classic cuts from the likes of the New Jersey Connection, Ted Taylor, Chain Reaction and The Gibson Brothers with more recent retro-futurist cuts (see his subtly house-friendly re-edit of Will Session and Amp Fiddler's superb "Lost Without You" and Full Intention and Nick Reach Up's modern electrofunk treat "Night of My Life"). While confirmed disco enthusiasts may own some of the tracks already, there's enough lesser known goodness to make the compilation an essential purchase.

Review: Bostonian DJ, producer and crate digger Serge Gamesbourg has spent much of the last two years slavishly digging into the history of Massachusetts' little known underground disco scene. Here, over mixed and unmixed discs, he presents the results. Naturally, there's little you'll have heard before, and plenty of high-grade dancefloor fire, much of it re-edited or subtly reworked by Gamesbourg himself. Highlights include the fuzzy, lo-fi funk of Gypsy's "Keep It Comin' On", the turn-of-the-'80s, synth-laden disco-funk dazzle of Portable Patrol's "Cop Bop", the celebratory release of "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics and the smooth, blue-eyed soul shimmer of "Wait Until Dark" by The Chris Rhodes Band.

Review: The Grasso is greener in Bologna: home to two of the most well-connected collectors in Italy. Suppliers to the likes of Kenny Dope, Phil Asher and Dimitri, Gino and Federico have carved their crate craft to insane levels over the last 30+ years... As shown on this detailed, widescreen boogie, funk and disco collection for BBC. Splattering the vibrant collection with a handful of their own edits (TB Funk's salubrious struts on "Free Blow", fly-by boogie falsettos on Living Color's "Plastic People"), the Grasso bro's have put together a package that's eye-opening, enlightening and damn fine to party to. See you on the other side.

Review: Having previously provided BBE with two killer compilations of obscure old Windy City sounds, Chicago DJ, crate digger and record dealer Mark Grusane returns to the London label with his first "headline" release: a killer collection of personal re-edits that have never before seen the light of day outside his DJ sets. As you might expect, all of the edited material is exceptionally obscure and on-point, with Grusane variously touching-up slamming disco, celebratory jazz-funk, slick boogie, sax-sporting disco-funk (see the brilliant "Do It" by Shabadoo), sleazy slow jams (Daniele Patuuchi's sublime "Sacrifice") and, more surprisingly, steel band funk (Macho's fine version of "Mucho Macho").

Review: A recent relocation to Berlin seems to have inspired BBE to throw themselves into the musical heritage of the techno capital. A forthcoming mix from celebrity Berlin DJ types Sick Girls represents the present and future of the city, whilst this GI Disco compilation is borne out the blog of the same name. Run by Kalle Kuts and Daniel W Best, GI Disco is their conduit to express their profound love for the funk, soul, disco and proto new jack swing that flooded 1980s Germany when US Soldiers were stationed on Cold War duty. There's some stone classics on this such as Freeze's Arthur Baker produced "I.O.U." and the Fonda Rae sung "Touch Me" from Wish, but it's the lesser spotted gems which make this compilation worth investigating. Caprice's "100" and "Riccochet" by BB & Q Band in particular delight with their raw electro boogie vibe.

Review: Long before disco-digging and needless re-editing became the pastime of a generation, Glaswegian graphic designer-turned-DJ Al Kent was doing both. For proof, check his acclaimed, illicit Disco Demands series. Originally launched in 2000 as an outlet for his obsession with barely-known 1970s dance music, it quickly became a conduit for his painstakingly faithful re-edits of long-forgotten disco records. Having seen his stock rise of late, BBE have decided to re-issue each of the five volumes in one bumper box set. For those with a love of disco's stranger fringes, The Best Of Disco Demands should be required listening. With 45 stonking cuts - some re-edits, others original studio versions - across five discs, it's an essential indulgence for disco heads everywhere.

Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.

The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.

Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Cosmic Disco by Patricia White on the other hand doesn't sound like something that Todd Terje or Lindstrom got their cues from, but it is a fun song with some brilliantly random thumb-piano playing in the background!

Anyone looking for samples will have a field day among these tracks, Sweet Daddy Floyd's I Just Can't Help Myself for example has a break in the middle to die for. You could loop up 4 bars practically anywhere and have something pretty damn funky to work with. For that reason alone, it's well worth having a listen and broadening your horizons.

Review: In recent years, we've become accustomed to disco compilations appearing at a furious rate. While many of these compilations are undoubtedly worthy of attention, the volume of releases can sometimes be bewildering. This 15 track mixed election from Al Kent, the second in his Disco Love series, ticks all the right boxes, however. Even by the highest crate digging standards, these tracks are pretty obscure; many won't have had much of an airing since their original release. Those into the rich, soulful side of disco - that brand of string-laden dancefloor material most associated with the Philadelphia International label and studio -will find much to enjoy. Perhaps the most noteworthy is Scarborough's delightfully sweet "Make Love To You", an epic of biblical proportions that lasts longer than most drunken one night stands. See also Valerie Simmons' supersweet "I Can't Make It On My Own" and the rousing orchestral manouvres of "I've Got The Need".

Review: Aside from releasing his own tunes and edits on Million Dollar Disco, Al Kent also dabbles in the fine art of compiling for the BBE crew, and this time he's been picked to pull together cuts for the label's fourth outing of the Disco Love series. As you'd expect, this is choc-a-bloc with odd, hard-to-find B-sides from the late 70's through to the early 80's, and his own edits are the perfect thing for the DJ who own the originals, but who wishes them to be that lil' bit straighter and kick driven. The opener itself, an edit of Clear's larger-than-life "Equal Love Opportunity" is a bit special...what a tune, and look out for the rest; all killers here. Tip for the disco heads, for real!

Review: After almost a decade, Al Kent has decided to re-launch his acclaimed series of personal re-edits, "Disco Demands".

Review: Al Kent's Disco Love series, in which the acclaimed Glaswegian disco digger showcases lesser-known disco-soul gems from his epic collection, has proved hugely popular over recent years. Here, he notches up volume number four, once again delivering a disc of un-mixed gems, and a second CD mix-up. Predictably, there's little familiar about the DJ's selections, but plenty of solid gold killers. Highlights are plentiful, from the sugary sweetness of Marva Hicks' punchy, string-laden "Looking Over My Shoulder", and the impeccable brilliance of Lee Edwards' "I Found Love", to the horn-heavy disco-funk genius of Symbol 8's "Call Me", and the uplifting stomp of Betty Everett's stand-out "Prophecy".

Review: Al Kent's Disco Love series has always been a reliable source of obscure and little known Philly soul, disco-soul and disco-funk. This third volume in the series continues the trend, with the ever-reliable Glaswegian crate digger unearthing even more dusty gems. Spread over two discs - one unmixed, the other featuring a quite brilliant, touchy-feely DJ mix -Kent showcases some inspirational finds. These include the decidedly fuzzy, upbeat looseness of Marion Javius' "Waiting In The Wings", the horn-laden down low disco-funk of TSB Inc's "Get On Down", and Frank & James' talkbox jam "How Long is Forever". There's also another chance to enjoy the orgasmic delights of "Hungry" by Sandy's Gang.

Review: You can hear it in the songs of Amerie, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Mark Ronson and Timbaland. Even in this digital age, the beating heart of modern r&b and hip-hop is still vintage soul, funk and jazz. Whether it's Winehouse sampling Motown's finest or Timbaland hijacking Nina Simone's "Sinnerman", the sound of the sixties and seventies has never been so sought after. Modern producers, searching for music of integrity continue to scour dusty racks of records for inspiration. What Kon and Amir have done is make their lives easier. The first collection in the five part "Off Track" series contains twenty-eight superb songs that you've probably never heard of. From a disco tribute to Muhammad Ali to a slice of soulful South African jazz, this is music for the connoisseur. Just don't be surprised when you hear it being sampled on the next big r&b anthem.

Review: Since the early 2000s, the NY duo Kon & Amir have been among the best disco editors around, and should now surely be seen as being amongst the very best of the East Coast disco scene. This is their 2007 compilation, Off The Track Volume One: The Bronx, a near twenty magnificent disco blazers that have been stripped down and anted-up by the duo for the purpose of today's dance floor. What's impressive, though, is how Kon & Amir manage to allow the original tunes to speak for themselves and, if anything, their editing allows the originals to sound even louder and prouder than ever before. There's plenty of heavy gear in here from the likes of Masterforce, STUD Band, The London Experimental Jazz Quartet, and if this doesn't satisfy your boogie needs, then we don't know what will.

The second in their companion series to their career-making On Track series, it's yet another digging exercise that is so deep you wouldn't be surprised at the sight of a huge oil gush. Ranging from psychedelic jazz (Bob Brault Org) and fuzzy lo-fi hammond-bashing samba (Super Boire Band) to straight up hip-shifting disco (Sweet Touch) to soul-warming African folk (De Porto Novo Dahomey) and complete with a peppering of their own edits, no one does collections like Kon & Amir. If this isn't already in your collection you know what to do.

Review: Back when remixing meant cut tape - not Ableton - John Morales and (Sergio) Munzibai aka M&M were the Bronx's go to men. Morales wraps up his two-part edit homage to M&M's unreleased material with slight recalibration's to Teddy Pendergrass, Loleatta Holloway and The Jones Girls, capping off the series with a soft and percussive "Breakdown beat" mix to the soulful and bona-fide hum of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You". T-Pendergrass horns and heat get touched up in a "Yo'u Got What I Need" mix, while the gospel vocals and strings of Loleatta Holloway are extended for a longer disco player. M&M then give The Jones Girls an extended and instrumental work out in their "I Don't Wanna Do It" mix.

Review: John Morales and his M&M collaboration with Sergio Munzibai have helped pioneer the disco edit and dancefloor remix. The duo are known for adding touches of latin percussion to their extensions and Part-A of a two part retrospect sees Morales unveil some previously unreleased M&M material. The legendary melted chocolate vocals of "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up" by Barry White get a simple and irresistible "Keep On Doin' It" touch up, while M&M save only the best vocals by pop and jazz singer Jean Carne in their "South Philly Groove" mix to "Was That What Is". The sweaty dance heat of Teddy Pendergrass' "If You Know Like I Know" receives some added length and extra loops in the appropriately titled "Teddy Knows Best" mix, while cut and pasted (literally) drum loops give Sander Barber's "I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own" some dancefloor momentum with the "Stepping Out The Door" mix.

Review: Legendary New York remixer John Morales apparently worked on this third collection of previously unheard M+M Mixes of disco and soul classics. So, while the material is vintage, the versions are brand new - though you'd struggle to know, given Morales' faithful use of the original parts and '70s mixing techniques. This instrumental version of the compilation (a full vocal version is also available) includes some real gems, from a delightfully lush and building rework of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" and a percussive, stripped-back version of Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face", to a simply sumptuous Barry White rub.

Review: 2009's M+M Sessions Volume One was undoubtedly one of the most essential disco/electrofunk compilations of recent times. Over the course of two discs, it brilliantly chronicled the productive studio partnership of celebrated NYC engineers and mixers John Morales and Sergio Munzibai. No disco collection was complete without it. Naturally, hopes are high for this second instalment. This time round, Morales (the sole survivor of the M+M partnership) has dug even deeper, dusting down previously unreleased versions of some lesser-known disco bangers. For disco completists, then, The M+M Sessions Volume 2 is a more exciting prospect than its predecessor. With 18 strong tracks to choose from - a number featured in both vocal and instrumental formats - picking highlights is tricky. It's perhaps no surprise that some of the real stand-out moments come from Leroy Burgess-related projects - see the deliciously dubbed-out take on the Fantastic Aleems' "Get Down Friday Night", the uplifting "Hooked On Your Love" (another Fantastic Aleems cut) and Logg's "Dancing In The Stars". There's a whole heap of Salsoul-related goodies, including Morales' soon-to-be definitive version of Inner Life's brilliant "Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)". Oh, and a couple of quite remarkable, previously unreleased dubs of vocal disco anthems. Well and truly essential.

Review: Perennial crate-diggers BBE have long been capable of unearthing hidden gems and shining a light on long-forgotten scenes. Here, with the help of fellow vinyl-sniffer Mr Peabody, they highlight Chicago's little-known 1970s/early 1980s underground disco and boogie scene. For those reared on the familiar sounds of New York disco and boogie, it's something of a revelation. Certainly, there's plenty for disco enthusiasts to get excited about here, from the piano & horn laden grooves of Sheila Hutchinson and Nedra to the tribal, African-influenced dancefloor rhythms of Lady Gwendolyn and Africa International. Along the way, expect to hear everything from hustlin' party jams and essential 80s groove to crackly disco-funk and distinctly cosmic soul. Absolutely essential!

Review: When Joey Negro and Sean P established the Disco Spectrum series of compilations back in 1999, few DJs were digging for disco. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). The time is right, then, for this "best of", containing the finest cuts from the series' three previous volumes. This time round, the crate-digging duo has opted for a mixture of familiar favourites ("Spread Love", "Out Of My Hands (Love's Taking Over)", "Bourgie Bourgie", "Together Forever" etc.) and harder to find gems. These include Caribbean disco classic "Trinidad" by John Gibbs and the US Steel Orchestra, Blair's sumptuous "Nightlife" and Larry Levan's brilliant remix of Syreeta's synth-laden slammer "Can't Shake Your Love".

Review: Given the ubiquity of hip-hop music, it's perhaps surprising that there haven't been that many compilations focusing on the early disco-rap scene that sprung up following the release of Sugarhill Gang's Chic-biting "Rapper's Delight" in 1979. Here, confirmed disco digger Sean P does just that, getting his fingers dusty in the crates to present a selection of some of the best - and least well known - disco-rap jams from the period. Even serious hip-hop diggers will be stumped by some of the tracks, which typically re-appropriate both well and little known disco and boogie grooves from the time (Jazzy 4 MCs "MC Rock", loosely based on Cheryl Lynn's "To Be Real", being a base in point). Pleasingly, the quality threshold remains high throughout, with tracks like Mr Sweety G's "At The Place To Be" sounding like genuinely overlooked gems.

Review: In recent times, crate-digging hero Andy Smith has turned his attention to the world of disco and boogie, showcasing the depth of his collection as part of the Reach Up collective. It seems fitting, then, that his latest compilation - a triple-vinyl epic - should explore the disco and electrofunk gems lurking in his vast vault of records. There are a few well-known gems (Disco Dub Band, World Premiere, Freedom and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk anthem "Holding Me Tight", for starters), but far more overlooked or slept-on gems (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). The collection also boasts a couple of tasty re-edits, including an unheard one by Smith and pal Nick Halkes of Jimmy Ross's Paradise Garage anthem "First True Love Affair".

Review: Compiled by noted disco digger Al Kent, The Men In The Glass Booth explores the early days of the re-edit and the remix. Specifically, it looks at the scalpel and production work of some of the disco era's most influential DJs - Walter Gibbons, Tom Savarse, Jellybean Benitez, Tee Scott, Francois K and John Luongo included - in a bid to chart the rise of the dancefloor-friendly extended version. Naturally, the material on show is top notch, with far more obscurities than well-known cuts. The three-disc set is also accompanied by a superb booklet, which contains archive interviews and detailed histories of those involved. If you dig disco, this is an essential purchase.

Review: This collection from London-based arch-nerd Zaf (he of the rare music site Zafsmusic.com) should have crate diggers salivating into their well-thumbed copies of Record Collector. It showcases obscure disco and boogie gems released only on "private presses" - those self-released albums and singles that are usually the preserve of uber-diggers with oodles of money to burn. Given the source material, it's no surprise to find Private Wax stuffed with quality fare, from the horn-soaked disco-soul bump of Christian Gaubert's "Sweet Maryline", to the undisputed boogie glory of Jeaney's brilliant "Reservation". Electrofunk diggers should also check 94 East's "If You Feel Like Dancing", the sort of life-affirming synth jam that surely would have been a hit had it not been buried so long.

Review: Mark GV Taylor and George Arthur are the deep diggers behind this new compilation on BBE and it takes its same from their own Reference Point events which pop up all over the place. They are known for travelling far and wide through various genres to explore lesser-known niches and that's what they do here with a broad and brilliant mix from across the ages. Across 15 cuts they serve up jazzy vocals numbers, 1970's Brazilian jazz and everything from soul, jazz, fusion, electronica, yacht rock and plenty more. Many of the tunes are hard to find in their original form, but some are much cheaper but totally less well-known - until now.

Review: We're prepared to argue with anyone on this, but Universal Robot Band's "Barely Breaking Even" is one of the best boogie-era disco records ever made. Its title was also the inspiration for the name of BBE Records, so it seems fitting that the label's 500th release is an all-star re-recording that brings together NYC house hero Louie Vega and original creators Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams. Vega delivers vocal and instrumental versions of two distinctive passes: a slick, smooth, soulful and string-laden "Boogie Mix" rich in warm electronics and subtle nods towards the early '80s original, and a rolling "NYC House Remix" full of twinkling Fender Rhodes solos and atmospheric chords. As you'd expect, Burgess' re-recorded vocal is superb.

BBE has harnessed these skills for From The Archive, a compilation of - in the DJ/producer's own words - "music that I've discovered that I thought would be interesting to share". It's a typically deep, soulful and varied affair, beginning with the horizontal jazz-funk bliss of Are & Be before variously touching on jazzy, soft-focus U.S house (a superb Chez Damier rework of The Urban Cru), obscure boogie (TGB), crossover disco-funk (Hot Quisine), and floor-friendly broken beat (Shokazulu, Bembe Segue). Happily, the collection also contains a trio of previously unheard re-edits from the man himself.
