Effects pedals

There are thousands of effects pedals on offer, with something to suit every budget and every sound. Effects pedals – sometimes called stomp boxes or FX – were originally targeted at guitar players, but now there are options for everyone, including pedals designed specifically for bass guitars, synths and vocals. Old-school effects pedals were typically simple analogue effects like distortion, overdrive, fuzz, wah and flangers. Modern pedals might also include digital processing, unlocking complex reverbs, delays, loopers and modulation effects like chorus. Electronic producers should look out for pedals which can handle line-level signals, making it easier to hook up synthesisers, modular synths, drum machines, samplers and other pro studio equipment. Some pedals even offer stereo inputs and outputs, meaning you can use them on true stereo signals. Whether you’re looking for a cheap, high-quality distortion or a boutique multi-effects unit, there’s something for everyone.

EarthQuaker Devices Ghost Echo v3 Reverb Effects Pedal
Cat: 781647 Rel: 14 Jul 20

A vintage voiced reverb effects pedal.
Notes: You hear that EVP? It's the all new, extra spook-tacular, Ghost Echo calling out from beyond the void! The Ghost Echo is Earth Quaker's spooky take on the haunted amp-top spring reverberation units of yesteryear. This creepy analog/digital spring reverb emulation machine boasts a terrifying 30ms - 150ms of pre-delay, controllable via the Attack knob, for everything from a quick rockabilly slapback to viscous pools of ectoplasmic reverberations. When playing staccato, you'll hear the tortured trails of the reverb, resulting in more of a slapback or echo sound. Legato playing will reveal a massive ambient "depth" that fattens up the sound - and look out, it's right behind you!

Phew, that was close. The Dwell control sets the length and thickness of the decay, which is to say that it controls how long the disembodied spirits of notes no longer with us float through the ether. At the maximum setting it will descend into an infinite loop of self-oscillation. The Depth sets the intensity of the reverb, which you probably know as the wet/dry mix.

Controls:
1. Attack: Adjusts the length of the pre-delay, from 30ms at minimum to about 150ms at maximum. When the Dwell is set to self-oscillate, this will change the pitch of the oscillations.

2. Dwell: Adjusts the length of the decay. This will start to self oscillate around 3 O'clock, the pitch of the oscillations can be changed by turning the Attack control.

3. Depth: Mixes in the wet signal with the dry, unity is around noon and everything after is boosted.

Tech Specs:
This device is true bypass and uses electronic relay-based switching. Audio will not pass without power.

This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. Pedal-specific, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies, or multiple isolated-output supplies, are always recommended. Pedals will make extra noise if there is ripple or unclean power. Switching-type power supplies, daisy chains and non-pedal specific power supplies do not filter dirty power as well and let through unwanted noise. DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!

Dimensions: 4.75 x 2.50 x 2.25 in. (121 x 64 x 57 mm) with knobs
Current Draw: 86 mA
Input Impedance: 10 MO
Output Impedance: 1 kO

EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master v3 Digital Delay & Reverb Effects Pedal
Cat: 781637 Rel: 28 Jul 20

Digital delay & reverb effects pedal
Notes: The Dispatch Master is a hi-fi digital Delay & Reverb Device that combines independent delay and reverb effects into one space-saving enclosure, so you can keep deep ambient echoes (or just a quick slapback) on speed-dial.

The best-selling EarthQuaker Devices pedal just got better with new Flexi-Switchr Technology. Want to dip into ambient delay and reverb sounds for just one note? Press and hold the footswitch for as long as you use the effect, release it when you're finished, and resume your regularly scheduled dry sound. To use the Dispatch Master as a normal effects pedal, press the switch once to activate and again to bypass.

To Use Both Effects at the Same Time, Simply Adjust all Controls to Taste:

The Mix (1) control is a wet/dry blend that adjusts the overall level of the affected signal.

Time (2) sets the delay time from 0ms to 1500ms (1.5 seconds).

Reverb (3) controls the amount of reverb. Counterclockwise is less reverb, clockwise is more reverb.

Repeats (4) controls the regeneration of the delay signal. When the Repeats control is set to maximum, you'll get infinite repeats without runaway self-oscillation, which makes it great for creating drones, dialing in the ultimate post-rock guitar sound without feedback, or just having fun.

To Use the Dispatch Master as a Delay Only:

Turn the Reverb control all the way down.

Adjust the Time, Repeats, and Mix controls to taste:

To Use the Dispatch Master as a Reverb Only:

Turn the Time and Repeats controls all the way down

Adjust the Reverb and Mix controls to taste

THIS IS IMPORTANT! In Reverb-only mode, the Repeats control has a secondary function. It can be used to adjust the decay, depth, and tonal quality of the reverb! Turn it up for more dynamics and a thicker tone.

This device features Flexi-Switchr Technology! This relay-based, true bypass switching style allows you to simultaneously use momentary and latching style switching.

For standard latching operation, tap the footswitch once to activate the effect and then tap again to bypass.

For momentary operation, hold the footswitch down for as long as you'd like to use the effect. Once you release the switch the effect will be bypassed.

Since the switching is relay based, it requires power to pass signal.

This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. We always recommend pedal-specific, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies or multiple isolated-output supplies.

Current Draw: 78 mA

Eventide Blackhole Reverb Effects Pedal
Cat: 791381 Rel: 16 Sep 20

Reverb effects pedal
Notes: Little box, big reverb. Specially designed for huge, cavernous echo effects and ideal for infinite tails and frozen sounds, the Blackhole is an exceptionally high quality pedal at a very reasonable price.

Supplier's Notes:
Create haunting echoes, ethereal landscapes and otherworldly ambience with Blackhole, a reverb pedal as big and as mysterious as the cosmos. Blackhole takes you there - beyond the ambience of mere earthly Halls, Rooms, Plates or Springs. Blackhole will take you on a journey from cathedral-type spaces to a universe of out-of-this-world soundscapes.

It includes onboard tone controls, modulation, and infinite reverb settings with mono or stereo operation, MIDI control, preset storing, and most importantly a new compact, easy-to-use interface.

Blackhole features two types of infinite reverb. Infinity mode continuously layers new sound on top of a suspended reverb. Freeze mode holds the effect allowing you to play over the reverb tail. The Freeze Footswitch allows instant access to this feature.

Unlike other reverbs which may offer pre or post modulation, Blackhole features modulation built into the reverb structure itself. It's essentially a big multi-voice chorus, with unique tone-shaping ability. You can utilize extreme settings to smooth out the edges.

Like all Eventide pedals, Blackhole allows you to fine tune every aspect of the effect. With a new, user-friendly, intuitive interface, just about anyone can shoot for the moon and land beyond the stars.

Supplier's Notes:
A Multiverse of Tone UltraTap is a unique multi-tap effect pedal capable of rhythmic delays, glitchy reverbs, huge pad-like volume swells, and extraordinary modulation.

It's the perfect tool for staccato leads, swelling chords, and other evolving effects - everything from reversed reverbs to the sound of ripping it up in the Grand Canyon!

Think of UltraTap as the mother of all Echoplexes and you won't be too far off.

That's basically how it operates but with the flexibility to add as many 'tape heads' as you want and expressively control their positions and levels.

UltraTap's controls make possible new and unexpected effects. The controls that you would expect in a multi-tap delay pedaliNumber of Taps, Delay and Feedback- are just the basics.

Controls for Spread, Slurm, and Chop open up a new world of possibilities.

Effect Features:

"Slurm" An exclusive and innovative control that smears/slurs taps together to create truly unique reverbs and choruses.

"Chop" and "Spd/Rise/Rel" combine to allow unusual and expressive modulation of the taps based on LFO shapes or the audio's envelope.

"Feedback" unlocks further tone shaping capability.

"Taps" selects up to 64 taps to create simple repeats or morph delays into chorus and reverb.

Walrus Audio Lore Reverse Soundscape Generator Effects Pedal
Cat: 881927 Rel: 23 Jun 22

Made up of five different programs, each utilizes different combinations of delay and reverb that feed into each other for time-warping ambient creations.
Notes: Reverb and reverse delay go to the next level with this "ambient creation machine". Two DSP circuits with analogue feedback allow you to create epic soundscapes, time-stretching effects and more.

Supplier's Notes:
Once upon a time, in a fairy tale world, there stood a hidden forest. On the eve of every full moon, magical and delicate sounds of light were heard bouncing and reverberating through the trees. These sounds carry artifacts of notes moving backward and stretching through time. They are referred to as... Lore.

Create the soundtrack to your storybook adventure with the Lore Reverse Soundscape Generator. Made up of five different programs, each utilizes different combinations of delay and reverb that feed into each other for time-warping ambient creations. Featuring two DSP chips running in series, each with their own analogue feedback path, the Lore takes you on an adventurous journey rich with themes of reversing, time-stretching, pitch-shifting, and vast ambiance.

Having two analogue feedback paths allows each program to incorporate a unique mix of affected and unaffected feedback. The two feedback paths interact and build off of each other organically, offering the user a wide array of sounds and behaviours to experiment with.

Programs:

I. Reverse Delay into Reverse Reverb: Program 1 combines reverse delay with reverse reverb with a focus on organically interacting feedback paths. Space and ambiance build as the signal is reversed, re-reversed, reverberated, and reversed again within the feedback network. Experiment with the X knob to control how reversed your delay trails are with left being least reversed and right being fully reversed. Lots of fun with big, eerie minor chords!

II. Reverse Delay into Octave Up Reverb: Program 2 is a "light reverb" that combines octave-up harmonic feedback with an expansive, airy, reverb tank to create a breathy, spacious ambiance. Use the Regen knob to introduce a playful shimmer into the reverb decay. Increase the X knob to control the decay of the reverb. It sounds especially great with delicate fingerpicking parts.

III. Reverse Delay into Octave Down Reverb. Program 3 is a "dark reverb" that combines octave down harmonic feedback with heavy filtering and harmonic distortion, to create a sound that is thick, rich, and murky. Use the Regen knob to bring a lower octave into the reverb decay. Increase the X knob to control the decay of the reverb. Add in some high gain or fuzz to alter the time-space continuum.

IV. Reverse Reverb into Forward Reverb. Program 4 is a dual reverb program, featuring reverse reverb into forward reverb, Dual harmonic feedback paths allow the user to dial in octave up and octave down, and time stretching allows for control of the size and character of the space. Perfect for instantly transforming guitar into rich ambient pads. Use the Feedback knob to add a lower octave to the reverse reverb. Conversely, use the Regen knob to add an octave up to the reverse reverb decay. Control the decay of the forward reverb with the X knob. To channel all things ambient, experiment with dynamic picking and strumming techniques with the mix fully wet for ethereal drones and pads.

V. Pitch Delay into Pitch Delay. Program 5 features two "duelling" pitch delays, which shift the input signal up and down in complementary or opposing directions, allowing the user to create intricate harmonic patterns in the feedback network. Behaves like a sequencer at higher delay times and like a harmonizer at lower delay times. Use Feedback and Regen knobs to control various amounts of pitched delay repeats. Use the X knob to change the order of the 4th, 5th, and octave intervals that the pitch delay steps through. Experiment with short staccato notes to create some very interesting rhythmic parts!

Dive / Rise - Holding down the tap tempo switch will momentarily shift the clock rate of the pedal down or up and will hold it at that rate for as long as the switch is pressed. The direction of the dive can be changed by simply pressing bypass and tap simultaneously. A green LED over tap will indicate rise is set and a blue LED will indicate that dive is set.

The Mod knob will control the amount of modulation applied to the wet signal. Holding down bypass and adjusting the Mod knob will adjust the modulation rate. The bypass LED will blink to show your set mod rate.

Specs:

The Lore comes coated in a muted green enclosure with Cream, Orange, brown and dark green ink with art by David Huttner.
The die-cast enclosure's exact size is 3.62" x 4.79" x 2.25" including knobs.
Buffered bypass.
Power requirements are 9VDC, center negative (300mA minimum).
The use of an isolated power supply is recommended for powering all Walrus Audio Pedals.

EarthQuaker Devices Ledges Tri-Dimensional Reverberation Machine Effects Pedal
Cat: 955430 Rel: 03 Aug 23

A three-mode reverb effects pedal with the ability to save and recall six presets and user-assignable expression control with loads of customizable options.
Notes: Ledges is a three-mode reverb with the ability to save and recall six presets and user-assignable expression control with loads of customizable options. From classic, standard reverb tones to undiscovered sonic reaches, it's everything you've ever wanted and needed out of a reverb.

The three switchable modes each deliver a unique blend of reverb, but are connected through a spectrum where the Room (R) reverb's longest setting is the Hall (H) reverb's shortest setting, the Hall reverb's longest setting is the Plate's (P) shortest setting, and the Plate's longest setting just keeps on going. The Room setting at its shortest achieves a small, boxy room sound that gradually gets bigger as you turn it up. As you increase the Hall setting, it morphs into a Cathedrals-style reverb that becomes really big, boomy and echoey with distant reflections. Turn up the Plate setting to get bouncy reflections that recycle and reverberate forever.

Ledges can go from an '80s slapback reverb mix to a bigger room spring reverb with the twist of the dials. The Mix knob lets you control how much your signal is affected, while the Length knob controls the size of the reverb. The Damping knob subtly mutes the high-frequency reflections of the reverb, which you'll hear clearly by adjusting your gain.

In addition to all of the features, there are six Presets available. Simply select a number with the switchable knob and then engage the Save on the center button and dial in your perfect sound. A quick Recall on the same button and you have all of your personalized reverb sounds with a single tap. You can assign an expression pedal to each of the three controls and then save it all in the presets.

Dimensions: 4.75 x 2.50 x 2.25 in. (121 x 64 x 57 mm) with knobs
Current Draw: 80 mA
Input Impedance: 1M O
Output Impedance: 100 O
TRS expression pedal wiring:
Tip: Wiper
Ring: +3.3V
Sleeve: Ground

Flexi-Switchr Technology

This device features Flexi-Switchr Technology! This relay-based, true bypass switching style allows you to simultaneously use momentary and latching style switching.

For standard latching operation, tap the footswitch once to activate the effect and then tap again to bypass.

For momentary operation, hold the footswitch down for as long as you'd like to use the effect. Once you release the switch the effect will be bypassed.

Ledges is buffered bypass with tails. Power is required to pass signal.

Power

This device takes a standard 9 volt DC power supply with a 2.1mm negative center barrel. It is always recommend you use pedal-specific, transformer-isolated wall-wart power supplies or multiple isolated-output supplies. Pedals will make extra noise if there is ripple or unclean power. Switching-type power supplies, daisy chains and non-pedal specific power supplies do not filter dirty power as well and let through unwanted noise. DO NOT RUN AT HIGHER VOLTAGES!

Mooer Audio Ocean Machine II Delay/Reverb/Looper Effects Pedal
Cat: 1045995 Rel: 20 Jan 25

Dual delay, reverb and looper effects pedal
Notes: Excellent value from the updated Mooer delay/reverb/looper. The Ocean Machine II features improved sound quality all round, plus expanded loop memory up to a total of 120 seconds.

Supplier's Notes:
Similarly to the original, the Ocean Machine II offers two independent delay modules, each with nine different delay types of up to two seconds, including household names such as digital, tape, and echo delays, as well as more abstract options, such as galaxy, crystal, and rainbow. A high-fidelity reverb module complements these delays with nine reverb types, as well as a shimmer effect. Each delay and reverb effect can also be 'frozen,' creating static ambient drones, an effect that sounds particularly impressive considering the pedal's DSP upgrades.

While the original Ocean Machine's looping capabilities provided just 44 seconds of loop storage, the new addition features an impressive 120 seconds. To experiment with this feature, along with Ocean Machine II's other sonic capabilities, users can use an intuitive LCD screen along with 12 knobs (four for each delay and reverb module) to easily adjust parameters within the device's 'Play Mode.' Three footswitches are also provided to facilitate independent effect toggling, tap tempo control, looper interfacing, and a preset selector.

Once the guitarist has crafted an interesting effect chain, they can save their work as a preset and enter 'Patch Mode,' in which they can toggle between saved settings with each of the three footswitches. In total, the Ocean Machine II provides eight preset storage banks, each of which supports up to three presets, resulting in a total of 24 save slots.

The pedal's versatility is further enhanced by its programmable parallel and serial effect chain hybrid, a signature element of Devin Townsend's tone creation. This feature allows users to customize the order of effects, providing endless creative possibilities. Further programming options can be accessed through the LED screen, which impressively includes synchronizable MIDI connectivity, a feature that was absent in the original Ocean Machine.

In addition to MIDI, the pedal supports various external control systems, including expression pedal input through a TRS cable. Furthermore, the pedal is compatible with MOOER's F4 wireless footswitch, allowing for extended capabilities for mapping presets and other features. A USB-C port is also available for firmware updates, ensuring that the pedal remains up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.

Considering the experimental nature of Devin Townsend's performances, MOOER has also gone above and beyond to facilitate the seamless integration of Ocean Machine II into any audio setup. The device features full stereo inputs and outputs, as well as adjustable global EQ settings, letting users tailor their sound to suit different environments. Guitarists can also customize their effect chains to be used with true bypass or DSP (buffered) bypass, depending on their preferences and specific use cases.

Overall, Ocean Machine II brings higher quality delay and reverb algorithms, augmented looping support, and various updated connections to Devin Townsend's original device. As per MOOER's typical standard, the pedal is engineered to withstand the rigors of touring and frequent use, allowing guitars to bring their special creations and atmospheric drones to the stage.

Wampler Ethereal Delay & Reverb Effects Pedal
Cat: 1090593 Rel: 21 May 25

Combined delay and reverb pedal that combines a dual delay with a plate reverb capable of very long tails.
Notes: How many times have you sat in front of your favorite ambient pedal and felt like you need weeks of training at NASA to use it? Knobs, switches, sliders - It's often SO hard and frustrating to find a usable tone on those things quickly - Keeping that firmly in mind, when Wampler first considered making an ambient pedal, ease of use was a top priority, right up there with top tier quality tone on par with pedals at twice the price.

How do you describe a pedal like the Wampler Ethereal? Does ambient heaven cover it? Is it the gateway between real life and the astral plane? Or is it just gorgeous? It's hard to know which phrase to use when talking about it, because they all match it perfectly - plus, of course, so easy to use you'll be getting those perfectly Ethereal tones instantly.

When designing the Ethereal these were the EXACT thoughts running through the mind of Brian Wampler. He wanted to make a delay that is as pure as you could want, with a time of up to 1s, a reverb that is thick and then have the option to mix them all up and put them together in one glorious effect that will send you away - all the way away while making it as easy to use and easy to find those perfect tones as possible.

It's been a bit of a secret, there isn't one delay lurking within the Ethereal, there are two! The first delay constantly sits there like a heartbeat, coming back at you at quarter notes, Wampler then layer another over the top - that one can be put into a triplet pattern, or a dotted 8th (so you can get that beautiful quarter + dotted 8th mix) and even a self-oscillating dotted eighth pattern that just takes you away and leads you over the edge and down the rabbit hole into perfect ambience - Things can get a little crazy when that one is selected, so you know, knock yourself out - it's there to make some incredibly strange yet beautiful sounds - See that little switch down there? Yep, that's the one, just to the right of the stomp - that's a trails button. When this is used the delay patterns and reverbs sing out after the pedal has been deactivated, so you can even control what you want to come back at you.

While you are enjoying the delay patterns, sitting underneath is that beautifully cavernous plate style reverb that is alive with character and shape, that can be brought in to exactly the right level (whether that be under your guitar, the same level - unity, or even considerably louder) to compliment the delay.

As you can imagine, this has been some feat of engineering (definitely worth waiting for) as we wanted all this to happen from a regular sized box, with the purity of tone and response you would expect from a Wampler. So, as with our other time pedals, we split the signal going in, the effected signal is then laid back on top of the original base tone, making sure that YOUR guitar sounds exactly how it does going in.

The Wampler Ethereal. Not only can it be used a stand alone reverb or delay pedal, it can be combined for you to worship, to get lost in, to even help you inspect your shoes - but most of all, it was designed to inspire.
