4'33 (Castro's Happy Birthday extended edit)
Review: Can there ever be a musical statement as decisive and divisive as John Cage's '4'33'? A quick primer for the uninitiated - in 1952 Cage presented this three-movement piece, in which any ensemble of musicians are to sit and not play a single note, the piece being made up of the environmental sound in which it is performed. The idea of an edit of this piece feels somewhat tongue in cheek, but Castro Moore of the Berlin-based Sound Metaphors crew has such sonic mischief woven into his various guises (DJ Poppers, anyone?). Enjoy this 'Happy Birthday' version 70 years after Cage broke the ultimate taboo on the idea of composed music.

Review: The LA mind-bender who built a computer and taught it to rap returns with a second volume of his Savage Planet Discotheque series. The result: some of the funkiest, most cosmic, forward-thinking beats you've heard this side of Brainfeeder. Ranging from the Border Community style mournful slo-mo meanders of "Destination Destiny" to the gutter-minded P-funk of "Silver Spine" via the soulful Hudmo-in-a-sewer vibe of "Hardships", this pushes more boundaries than you thought existed. Unique and outstanding in equal measure.

Review: It's impossible to deny how tight the production on this experimental but highly workable and coherent double-A side actually is. Both tunes belong on the Everything In Its Right Place shelf, and each of those things seems to have been crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Opening on the original version of 'Kodokushi', there are more than a few clear references to the glory days of progressive breakbeat dance music, with the track a sparse, space-age set opener if ever there was one, gradually unfolding into a subtle and loose rhythm crying out for heavier beats to mix in. The Toulouse Low Trax remix goes someway to answering that call, bringing a gradually growing groove into the equation and heightening the percussive elements, leaving us somewhere between an instrumental of Massive Attack's 'Karma Coma' and Sasha's 'Airdrawndagger' LP.

Review: Hidden Hawaii main man Felix K links up with Drumkid on this ranging 10" of scuffed, experimental electronics. "Flanger Mouth" reveals much about its sonority before even listening to the track, which is a minimal affair that ticks along without the need for an obvious set of weighty drums, letting feathery top end percussion flutter out a mechanical pattern. "HUDR" is a softer proposition, as gentle and varied cuts of chord, note and hum spar with each other while managing to stay grounded in a teasing kind of funk. To keep you on your toes, "Uninvited Guest" opts for a juke-style rollick through rapid fire drums while the string samples that come jerking in have a staunchly hip hop air about them.

Review: Former Blackstrobe man Ivan Smagghe (It's A Fine Line/Disques De La Mort) had teamed up with regular collaborator Rupert Cross on the MA LP for Vladimir Ivkovic's Offen Music earlier in 2017. These two tracks can be seen as an addendum of sorts to their wonderful album of ambient, drone and experimental electronics excursions. It was a departure from the disco-tinged remixes the pair were more known for and an impressive body of work which we'd recommend. On the A side we have the sublime free-synth journey of "Jazz" showing off some wonderful expressions of a lush patch, while on the flip things take a darker and noisier turn on the four minute thriller "Assassin De La Popcorn".

Review: Immersion is the epitome of collaboration. Comprising Colin Newman, of legendary UK post punk outfit Wire, and his life partner Malka Spigel, the two first came together in 1985, former producing the latter's band, and have since fallen in love and combined creative forces countless times. Growing out of their Immersion project, a series of pop up gigs took place at the Rosehill, Brighton, with a cast of influential and cutting edge musicians getting involved. Songs were written and rehearsed before each show, and an album, Nanocluster Vol.1, soon materialised. Now we have the follow up. Disc one is centred on Thor Harris, percussion doyen of Swans, while the second half refocuses our attention on Cubzoa, AKA Jack Wolter of Penelope Isles, with Matt Schulz (Holy Fuck) also involved. The result is a psyche-tinged ride through swaggering indie, dream pop, chill, and surreal rock, nodding to names from Beta Band to King of Woolworths and beyond.
