Review: Discodelic comes correct again with a new 7" that features a pair of rather lesser-known and brilliantly obscure Latin psych-rock gems. Conjunto Raza' 'African Dream' is all crackly and immediately nostalgic because of it, with noodle acoustic guitar sounds making way for a more upbeat and driving 60s garage rock sound but all in loveable lo-fi. Add in a red-hot vocal and you have a flame cut full of funk. On the reverse, The Scepters 'Message' is another well-aged jam that brings rawness and emotion in equal measure.

Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. They released a single 45 on Onda Nueva in the mid-70s and it blends Zonian and Panamanian talent with aplomb.

Review: Some six years (give or take a few months) on from the release of their superb debut album Psychedelic Disco Cumbia, self-styled 'NYC tropical supergroup' Locobeach are back! This time round, they've treated us to a genuine rarity: a rarely spotted double seven-inch EP. All four tracks have, apparently, been extensively road-tested in their live sets and become, in their words, "fan favourites". They begin in stellar fashion via a head-nodding, cumbia-powered cover of Cure classic 'Close To You' (it's genuinely great - one of the best covers we've heard for a while), before imagining a suitably tropical spy chase on the urgent and percussion-rich 'Idea Desesperada'. On 45 number two you'll find the cheeky cumbia-soul-meets-yacht-rock cheekiness of 'Isabella' and the surf-flecked, high-octane tropical fun of 'U.S Marshall'.

Released in 2015, Sound & Color took the blueprint laid out with Boys & Girls and then kicked up into fifth gear. It's soul. It's blues. It's sweat-soaked funk. Most importantly, though, it's the kind of record that keeps giving the more you listen, sounding equally at home in the 1950s as it does the 2010s.
It's hard to really put into words the level of husky, pained, heart-on-sleeve musicality at the core of this record. Brittany Howard's voice might never again sound as utterly distraught and reflective, pained and somehow filled with hope for a brighter day. Individual readings aside, this is among the finest blues records to land this century, and ranks up there with some of the greats of the 20th, so don't sleep on this edition complete with closing tracks recorded live at the legendary Capitol Studios.

Review: Yemenite music in Israel is a uniquely Middle-Eastern style born from the immigration of Yemenite Jews to Israel. Initially religious and ceremonial, the music featured separate male and female songs accompanied by drumming on olive oil tin cans. Aharon Amram, born in Sana'a, Yemen, immigrated to Israel as a child and became a central figure in this genre. Review: Mr Bongo look back to the damn fine Latin funk and rock-infused soul sounds of Coke's 197 self-titled opus for their next well-chosen reissue project here. It is their only album, sadly, but is a brilliant mix of Miami Latin-funk, psychedelic garage rock and gritty soul sung mainly in English. It blends bright funk drumming, flavourful organs and zesty horn with Paul Garcia (guitar), Ariel Hernandez (bass), Ruben Perez (drums), Jose Rubio (keys) and Peter Fernandez (vocals) all produced by Mato. The record was popular in Miami but faded due to limited promotion and a Coca-Cola trademark dispute but was later rediscovered by collectors, with standout tracks like 'Na Na,' 'Got to Touch Your Face' and 'Te Amo Mas' all became staples of Latin sets.

Review: Brian Auger's Streetnoise was originally recorded in 1969 with Julie Driscoll and The Trinity. It stands proud as a genre-blurring work of jazz, rock, folk and soul greatness that found the group moving beyond their r&b and jazz roots. Instead, Auger and Driscoll crafted a progressive, avant-garde yet deeply soulful record in which Driscoll's haunting vocals contrast beautifully with Auger's instrumentation. The gatefold sleeve was designed by Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman and was inspired by Hogarth's satirical etchings which in turn reflects the album's artistic ambition. Review: Man With A Gun is the debut long player from Singaporean prog and funk group Funkgus. It has a famously enigmatic toxic blue jacket that lurks you in and musically it is no less intriguing. As well as a passionate cover of King Curtis's 'Memphis Soul Stew' there are plenty of supremely psychedelic sounds. The opener is steeped in funky bass riffs with rock-tinged drum breaks and plenty of raw vocals and from there the grooves come thick and fast, often with plenty of texture and charismatic vocals such as on 'Spill The Wine' and the leggy, expressive sounds of 'Everyday People' with its twisted wah wah guitars.

Review: Belgian-Moroccan singer Aicha Haskal is at the heart of this fabulous project which sees her joining creative forces with super-talented musicians from the Belgian scene. Between them, the group has a mad diverse spread of backgrounds and influences which means their music too is broad in scope - psychedelic sounds and funky grooves, Arabic melodies and European rhythms all feature in this album as do rap and parlando. Egyptian poet Abdelhamid Farag penned their first single 'Ghalat' and now this album expands around that with music that fights the oppression of women and fights for revolution.

Review: Building on the success of their A New Kind of Love album back in 2022, Ghost Funk Orchestra ventures further into the realms of film music, exotica, and psychedelic surf rock with new record A Trip To The Moon.' It was written with the aim of creating a richly layered and collaged listening experience with myriad elements waiting to be discovered with each new spin, and they have certainly achieved that. Featuring fuzzy guitars drenched in spring reverb and horns arranged in a studio big band style, it offers a blend of garage rock attitude and big compositions with influences like Eddie Palmieri and Dusty Springfield to be found within. It also features real recorded transmissions from the Apollo moon missions weaved throughout the tracks as a tale is told of a woman left stranded on Earth by her cosmonaut partner.

Review: Scott Gilmore's tracks are deceptively pared back. Putting an Arp Odyssey, Yamaha CS-01, Korg DW-8000, Hohner Pianet T, Roland TR 606, Roland SH 101, bamboo alto saxophone, clarinet, electric guitar and electric bass to very good use on this nine track Balearic-downtempo stunner, the tunes are easy to groove with yet subtly complex. They feel simple, but are incredibly detailed. Veering between a kind of synth-y smooth jazz, lounge, lofi electronica and sunset instrumental, Volume 01 is the proof after the promise of Gilmore's 2019 debut, Two Roomed Motel. Second album in and it's quite clear how talented the guy is. We just wish there was more information available for us to get to know him better with.

Review: Spain's Discos Fantastico deals in Peruvian and Latin American musical archaeology. It has put out a vibrant array of what it describes as "psych cumbia, fuzz killer chicha, rockbeat, boogaloo, nueva ola and boleros" and now joining the great canon is Arrollando Con Alegria by Grupo Alegria - a cumbia band formed in Huancayo, Peru in the late 1970s and led by Augusto Bernardillo - which has hints of all those sounds and more. It is a classic for world music lovers that was related back in 1983 in Peru and will cost you a few quid if you are to find an original copy.

Review: Wewantsounds continues its deep dive into Algerian music with the first-ever reissue of Les Abranis' sought-after-by-those-who-know 1983 long player, Album No. 1. Originally recorded in Paris and privately pressed in small quantities, the album, which is also known as Id Ed Was, fuses Kabyle rhythms with funk and touches of reggae. This reissue has been curated by Cheb Gero (of recent Sweet Rebels compiling fame) and features remastered audio, though it retains the original artwork. It's a great line document of Algeria's diasporic groove with a two-page insert featuring fresh liner notes by journalist Rabah Mezouane.

Review: London Fog is the name of a live album by The Doors, but is also the name of a rock band who brought all new energy back in their day in the 1960s. In 1965, the buzz of 'swinging London' saw the opening of the Goldfinger-inspired 007 Club at the London Hilton. Review: Nigerian singer, songwriter, and guitar legend, Mdou Moctar should need no introduction if you keep an ear to the ground of sub-Saharan African music. Then again, the vague region covers a vast area - land in all four hemispheres and around 15% of the Earth's walkable surface. So you could be forgiven for missing out on an individual artist if, for example, you weren't already looking for them specifically. Or relied on Western culture media for tips on what to hear next. That said, problematically tunnel-visioned as the North Atlantic-hegemony of commentators can be, Moctar has been something of a darling to UK, European and US musos for a while now. On Tears of Injustice he presents a convincing case for their continued adoration. A master of Tuareg, a style of music also known as desert blues, it's an intoxicating sound that easily transports and invokes, even if the predominantly Tamasheq language he sings in remains a mystery - arguably another factor in the powerful mythology surrounding his legacy.

Review: Funk. Soul. Psychedelic. And good old rough and ready rock 'n' roll. There are plenty of ways to interpret and categorise Jeannie Piersol's music. None come close to hitting the nail on the head of this enigma: a woman shrouded in the thick haze of weed smoke and LSD vapour. A key artist in the 1960s San Francisco counterculture, very little is known about her, but she rose to prominence with Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother, before exiting via the backdoor as the hippy dream died at the heel of conservatives and capitalists. The Nest brings together all Piersol's 1968 singles for the Chess label, alongside bits by Yellow Brick Road and Hair, studio outtakes, demos, and live recordings from some of her legendary shows of the time. Complete with 16-page booklet and 7,500 word essay by Grammy-nominated producer Alec Palao, this is more time capsule than album really.

Review: Should you be that travel agent searching for the original sound of 60s-70s in your funk, soul, psychedelic rock and folk today, then Will Dorey, aka Skinshape, is your partner in time. Tracks on the album sometimes comes across as easy to compare with a stream of other admired acts like Air ("After Midnight") to Beck and Australia's Tame Impala on "Metanoia" and "Life As One". Throughout the LP, furthermore, Skinshape's fourth, it's hard to not escape hints of French inspirations in its sometimes jazzy inspirations, with flickers of the 1973 soundtrack to the film La Planete sauvage (Fantastic Planet) never too far off. A highly recommended listen!

Review: Talk about fitting titles for an album. Skinshape has pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one, presenting a lush and intoxicating 11 tracks of calm (or, perhaps more accurately, cool) waters waiting for you to float on. These are pieces informed by 1960s movie scores, 70s funk, southern US psychedelic blues, and all manner of genres and subgenera that place an emphasis on sticky heat tempos, guitar licks, and a feeling of keeping one eye on the rear view mirror while cruising imagined highways.

Review: This Kurdish/Syrian singer and bouzouki player began his music career in 1980 while studying nursing. After earning his degree in 1983, he moved to Raqqa, Syria, and formed The Al-Rabie Band, with whom he performed Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish and Western songs. In 2011, the Syrian war forced his family to flee after his son was killed by ISIS so he resettled in Ireland, where he used music to connect with the local community, performing at various events and collaborating with Irish artists.
