Cat: 5897. Rel: 21 Oct 24
Sentimental Moments (10:58)
Vida Mia (8:17)
Oh Yeah T'blessed (20:51)
Review: Building on the momentum of their debut album, the legendary musicians and 577 mainstays return with Shine Hear, Vol. 2, a stunning continuation of their avant-garde exploration. Saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter, pianist Leo Genovese, bassist William Parkeriwho also contributes on Gralla and Shakuhachiiand drummer and vocalist Francisco Mela, reunite to create another cosmic journey through sound. This second volume maintains the same spirit of improvisational brilliance while pushing the boundaries even further. Drawing from classic jazz structures, the ensemble weaves in modern experimentalism and a broad palette of instruments, resulting in an album that feels both timeless and innovative. The tracks and the album title are inspired by a new poem written by Carter, reflecting the transience and ceaseless motion of modern life, much like the city of New York, where all the musicians are based. This collaboration has unique magic can emerge when these legendary artists come together. Their interplay blends elegant, traditional jazz with daring, avant-garde arrangements. Shine Hear, Vol. 2 stands as a powerful and innovative work, affirming the quartet's ability to continually reinvent themselves while honouring the roots of jazz.

Black Sun (Joe Claussell Classic mix) (10:37)
Black Sun (Joe Claussell dub mix) (6:52)
Black Sun (Joe Claussell Classic instrumental mix) (10:44)
Review: Joe Claussell is a proper legend of the scene and New York powerhouse who has a sound so emotionally intense it brings people to tears. Here, he breathes new life into the Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra with a powerful remix of 'Black Sun' that arrives exclusively for Record Store Day 2025. Since debuting in 2014, the Orchestra, which features Azymuth's Jose Roberto Bertrami and Alex Malheiros, has attracted top remixers like Theo Parrish and DJ Spinna, and Claussell now joins that esteemed list by infusing the original with his signature spiritual energy and rawness. The result is a euphoric journey towards pure ecstasy driven by Heidi Vogel's soaring vocals as classic disco and grooves collide in pure magic.

What Do You Got (4:46)
Review: Fat Night is an indie soul band based in Chicago made up of Dan Hanson, Gabe Gundacker, Ted Issen and Nik Ritchie. Their 'Sun Go Down' is a masterclass in simplicity as genius. A grooving bass, cool guitar riffs, understated drums, tight vocal harmonies and a moody organ weave together to create a tune that builds with effortless coolness and brings some sunshine on even the gloomiest days. Originally featured on Fat Night's 2015 Lazy Days album, it makes its vinyl debut here with 'What Do You Got,' a sweet soul ballad from 2020's Live For Each Other.

Gynger (9:18)
Review: Flammer Dance Band returns with 'Gynger', a high-energy, groove-infused album that showcases their vibrant fusion of funk, Afrobeat and psychedelic sounds. After a whirlwind year of touring, including a stint backing Ghanaian legend Funky Rob, the seven-piece group hit the studio with fresh inspiration and contagious spontaneity. Over five intense days, they recorded Gynger, an album brimming with dynamic, raw energy. Highlights include,'Bandet Gar', which is a horn-heavy funk powerhouse, bursting with infectious rhythms. 'Ekko Av Deg Selv' takes a more experimental route, with its distinctive keyboard work lending the track a unique and eclectic vibe. 'Glad' delivers a laid-back, Balearic flavour, with breezy guitar riffs and a relaxed island groove, offering a refreshing, chilled-out contrast. Meanwhile, the title track, 'Gynger', dives into trippy, psychedelic territory, swirling with hypnotic rhythms and spaced-out vibes that pull listeners deep into the groove. This release sees a band at the peak of their creativity, blending tight musicianship with a free-flowing, jam-like spirit. Flammer Dance Band's is clearly a leader in funk and Afrobeat, offering this fresh take on classic grooves with modern twists.

Love Is A House (radio version) (4:22)
Review: A timeless gem from the mid-80s, this ballad is a magical slow jam of its era with a soulful touch that remains irresistible. Produced and written by the legendary duo Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the song features their unparalleled ability to craft heartfelt melodies and lush arrangements. Its delicate piano-driven sound and tender vocal delivery immediately connect, making it an enduring favorite. Initially featured in the movie Krush Groove, the track quickly outshone its cinematic origins, climbing to number four on the r&b charts and breaking into the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. It introduced the group to a wider audience, transcending their early hip-hop and pre-new jack swing roots. Now released on heart-shaped vinyl, this edition feels like a perfect tribute to a song that's all about emotion and connection.

Tropicafrica (Sun 793 remix) (7:00)
Tropicafrica (Mr Bird's Late Night remix) (4:46)
Review: Eclectic Beats Music's seventh release pays homage to Ghana's famous highlife music. The A-side features two original broken beat tracks: firstly, 'Tropicafrica' is a slower, syncopated journey with progressive harmonies and intricate guitar work while 'Highlife' brings an upbeat, joyous vibe with faster rhythms and bright Highlife guitar melodies. On the B-side, two standout remixes shine as Sun 793 offers a darker, futuristic take on 'Tropicafrica' that blends lush keys with a deep, contemplative bruk aesthetic. Meanwhile, Mr. Bird reimagines the same cut with a vibrant house and broken beat fusion.

Berimbau (6:42)
Review: Fradinho is back with another Faro funk frazzler, aka. to-a-T bruk dance second-guessers informed by Brazilian music. We can hear the meditative but still turning head-turning sensibility of early bruk titans as Dego or Bugz In The Attic here, which the listener is led to *almost* lose the on-beat (but not quite). 'Berimbau' is the closer of choice by the longtime Portuguese dance artist; he ends things on a deeper-set, moodier note, driven by rich low-ends and evocative uses of its namesake instrument. Brazil is honoured with nuance rather than pastiche.

One Step Ahead (2:33)
I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face (2:43)
Review: This reissue brings to light one of most treasured and elusive recordings of soul music from the 60s. 'One Step Ahead', famously featured in Moonlight and sampled in Mos Def's 'Ms. Fat Booty', stands as a deep masterpiece from her early Columbia years. Released two years before her meteoric rise at Atlantic Records, this track never appeared on any of her Columbia albums, making it a rarity sought after by fans and collectors alike. The flip side, 'I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face', is equally spellbinding. Franklin's rendition of this classic exudes raw emotion and vocal brilliance, elevating it to a level that's both powerful and deeply moving. This special 7" pressing is for anyone passionate about Aretha's legacy. It captures a pivotal moment in her career and offers a chance to own a piece of soul music history, filled with timeless artistry.

Dedos (Fingers) (3:42)
Doce Y Diez (3:10)
Review: This is a real lost South American Latin Jazz-Funk treasure from Argentina taken from some original 1974 recordings led by Carlos Franzetti. Known for his late 70s jazz-fusion album Graffiti, Franzetti recorded Dedos after returning to Argentina from Mexico where he was musical director at Fermata International. His friend Mochin Marafiotti, A&R at Music Hall, proposed the Latin Jazz project and the session featured Ruben Rada, Ricardo Lew, Emilio Valle, Osvaldo Lopez and Franzetti himself. Though initially overlooked, Dedos and Doce y Diez now receive a long-overdue reissue as they remain high on energy and deeply jazz gems with a Latin twist.

Review: The 1984 classic 'Come Back Lover' by The Fresh Band receives an official remastered reissue from the original tapes. Produced by Darryl Gibbs of The Strikers and expertly mixed by Tony Humphries, this disco boogie gem soared in underground dance clubs across Chicago and New York, championed by DJs like Mancuso, Larry Levan, and Ron Hardy. You Are All The World Of Hero (3:18)
Review: Montreal producer Jesse Futerman returns a refined sound that has carefully developed since the early 2010s. With past support from BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music champions like Gilles Peterson and Benji B and collaborations with the legendary Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Futerman is a real contemporary favourite. These four cuts blend swinging vocals and organic live drums with introspective downbeat bliss outs like 'Velvet Glove' and 'The Case of The Lost and Found' marries the sort of life-affirming piano lines and persuasive Balearic grooves that will light up more mature parties. 'You Are All The World Of Hero' is a delicate dub with fluttering percussion and hand drums lending it great intimacy.

Brenda Holloway - "Don´t Stay Away" (2:52)
Marvin Gaye - "You´re The One" (3:19)
Four Tops - "Just Your Love" (1:59)
Review: David Ruffin, Brenda Holloway, Marvin Gaye and the Four Tops are looked back on with decisively celebratory intent by reissues label Soul4Real, on this loving EP compilation of some of their best, yet never sought-after tunes (how could they be - they were all unreleased until now!). The FDWL series salvages some of the best, yet originally unissued Motown tracks for the modern era's ear, pressing them to 7" for the very first time. But unlike the demo quality one might expect from reissues of songs by artists of less fine calibre, that's not the case here; this is Motown we're talking about, so every piece plays back with the sheen of any other well-known, radio-ready song by each of these Detroit-nurtured soul ramparts. It truly is awe-inspiring to know that these tunes could've been hits back in the day, and yet, by the winds of chance, are likely to remain forever relatively etheric, close to unknown. Of them, Gaye's 'You're The One' is the almost paternal r&b romance of choice, while Holloway's 'Don't Stay Away' brings with it a reverberative, chambered quality, as if to heighten it's echoing through time, despite the track's inadvertent suppression.

Review: Human novae of the 1950s jazz circuit in Hollywood, Curtis Amy and Frank Butler imploded the local scene at the turn of the swinging decade when they began to record for local label Pacific Jazz. Laid down in a single session at the PJ studio, Groovin' Blue is a timeless and idiosyncratic experiment in jazz, its specialty being tss-tss rhythms, unhindered lead instrumental melisma, sax counterpoint, and smackout drum fills and solos from Butler, which more than transcended the strictures of the swing form of the time. Also hearing vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, who was just 19 years old at the time of this recording, this excellent six-song set is perfect for those audiophiles keen on the interesting intersection of blues and jazz.

Part of Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics series, the record blends Latin rock, funk, soul, disco, and Afro-Cuban rhythms into an eclectic and captivating sound. With standout tracks like the Latin disco-funk 'Casa De Ladrillo' and a cover of Commodores' 'Brick House' this hidden gem, which was produced by Tony TaNo, is a must-have for both fans and collectors.

Review: Three Trumpets was recorded in 1957 and released on the New Jazz label. It features the Prestige All Stars led by revered trumpeters Art Farmer, Donald Byrd, and Idrees Sulieman and supported by a solid rhythm section of pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Addison Farmer, and drummer Ed Thigpen. This sublime album includes five original compositions, one each by Farmer, Byrd, and O'Brien, and two by Sulieman. While none of the tracks became hits in their own right and with 'Palm Court Alley' being a blues delight, they all offer up dynamic performances and impressive interplay among the brass musicians.

Review: Fat Freddy's Drop returns with their latest studio album, SLO MO, a vibrant exploration of rhythm and soul that harnases their exhilarating live performances. Described by band member Fitchie as "afro rhythmic soul music," the album reflects a unique blend of influences from Polynesia, showcasing the group's distinctive sound. Recorded in their Wellington-based BAYS studio, this sixth album marks a significant evolution, aiming to encapsulate the energy and emotion of their celebrated live shows. Comprising nine tracks, SLO MO is here on double vinyl, allowing listeners to engage with the album as a cohesive artistic experience. As the album progresses, Joe Dukie's haunting vocals invite introspection, creating a spectral quality that resonates deeply. The cover art, created by Aotearoa artist Dan Tippett, transports viewers to a dreamlike, prehistoric forest, perfectly reflecting the album's themes of connection and renewal. With SLO MO, Fat Freddy's Drop once again proves their ability to push musical boundaries while staying true to their roots, delivering a powerful statement of resilience and creativity.

Review: The limited edition deluxe double vinyl release of 'SLO MO' is here, featuring a stunning holographic overlay that matches the album's deep, immersive sound. Freddy's latest studio album is a nine-track journey packed with bass-heavy beats, offering both redemption and resolution. Described by Fitchie, the group's beatmaker, as "Afro rhythmic soul music," 'SLO MO' explores the rich intersection of Black music through a Polynesian lens. This strictly limited pressing is a celebration of rhythm, soul and culture, making it an essential pick-up for vinyl collectors and fans of bold, genre-defying sounds.

Review: This dynamic duo delivers an incredible set of funky psych rock on Funk Night that blends retro fuzz with their unique modern twist. Drawing on a mix of vintage and eclectic influences, they've crafted a fresh, lean sound all their own. The production shines with crackling drums anchoring a vibrant mix of vocals, guitar and keyboards which all keep you moving. While leaning more to rock than some releases on Funk Night, the tracks remain irresistibly funky and full of energy with standout tracks like 'Amor Fatigue,' 'Hermit Song,' 'Sleeping Couch' and 'Walls Were There' showing the quality of their inventive style.
