Miss Your Life
Miss Your Life (limited olive green vinyl 7")
Cat: JTI 007. Rel: 08 Aug 24
Miss Your Life (2:44)
Small Thing (3:10)
Review: 'Miss Your Life' is a punky new wave track that was originally penned as a poem before evolving into a song. It critiques British apathy, complacency, and a pervasive sense of powerlessness and pessimism that we can all relate to. The song itself serves as a rallying cry to resist and take action before it's too late. The James Taylor Quartet's guitarist Mark, typically known for his more intricate parts, nails the punky intro with precision and the track captures this outfit's defiant spirit and youthful energy while also blending joy and rebellion as they revisit their adolescent years with a powerful message.

Dave Had A Dream (9:55)
Review: Jimi Ahlroos's debut release on Jazzaggression is a limited edition album that comes in a reused sleeve with a digital download but none of the musical ideas are rehashed in any way. it's a vital 10" that features three original compositions performed by Jimi's energetic trio which includes Mooses Kuloniemi on drums and Tuomo Purhonen on double bass. Recorded at Pelto Studio in Siuntio during November 2023, the A-side opens with the funky 'Kouvo's Dance' followed by the introspective 'Blues.' The B-side offers the expansive 'Dave Had a Dream,' a heartfelt tribute to David Lynch that has already proven popular at Jimi's gigs.

Jorge Ben - "Xica Da Silva" (4:05)
Miriam Makeba - "Xica Da Silva" (5:15)
Review: This Mr Bongo Brazil 45 reissue features two classic tracks from legendary duo Jorge Ben and Miriam Makeba. Side A presents 'Xica Da Silva,' one of Jorge Ben's most iconic songs from his equally legendary Africa Brazil album which has long been a must-have for any discerning head. This magical MPB track with its laid-back funky samba vibe instantly transports you to the blissful shores of Rio de Janeiro as Ben's vocals tell the story of a historic Brazilian icon. On the flip side, Miriam Makeba delivers a captivating, slowed-down rendition of 'Xica da Silva' which is enriched with strutting guitar, off-beat piano, and hypnotic drums while her powerful voice takes centre stage.

Jorge Ben & Toquinho - "Carolina, Carol Bela" (3:09)
Joao Donato - "A Ra" (2:32)
Review: Jorge Ben is a legendary figure in Brazilian music, often called the James Brown of Brazil, and is famous for writing the iconic anthem 'Mas Que Nada' as well as innovating within the samba sound. Amongst many other great successes, he collaborated with singer and guitarist Toquinho on the duet 'Carolina, Carol Bela' on the Brazilian label RGE. This song was famously sampled by DJ Marky and XRS for their drum and bass track 'LK' which became a global hit and topped the UK charts. Joao Donato is a renowned Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist who worked with icons like Tom Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, and Gilberto Gil and his track 'A Ra' appeared on his classic 1973 album Quem e quem, which has since been recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. Both of them are real Latin gems.

Joyce - "Aldeia De Ogum" (4:30)
Rosinha Da Valencia - "Summertime" (2:59)
Review: Joyce Moreno, a legendary Rio-born artist, is celebrated for her exceptional voice, musicianship, and songwriting. With over 30 albums in a career spanning more than 50 years, she continues to enchant audiences worldwide. Her iconic track 'Aldeia de Ogum,' known for its vibrant jazzy arrangement and rich samba rhythms, became a staple in London's Acid Jazz scene, championed by DJs Patrick Forge and Gilles Peterson. Originally featured on her 1980 LP Feminina and our 1997 Essential Joyce compilation, this beloved song first appeared on 7" through the Brazil 45 series. Rosinha de Valenca, another Rio native, was a revered composer, arranger, and guitarist who collaborated with giants like Baden Powell and Sergio Mendes. Her instrumental rendition of Gershwin's 'Summertime,' from her 1975 LP Um Violao Em Primeiro Plano, shows off her exquisite guitar skills accompanied by lush strings, delivering an emotionally stirring performance. A lot of great history on one 7".

Noriel Viela - "16 Toneladas (Sixteen Tons)"
Juca Chaves - "Take Me Back To Piaui"
Review: Mr. Bongo's Brazil.45 continues with a repress of two highly sought-after tracks from earlier in the series, this time from Noriel Vilela and Juca Chaves. On the A-side, Vilela's 1971 cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford's '16 Tons' transforms the classic American folk song into a smooth, samba-infused groove. Vilela's version reimagines the track which was originally released on Copacabana Records, with a deep rhythmic flair. On the B-side, Juca Chaves' 'Take Me Back To Piaui' from 1970 featured on his 1972 album Muito Vivo delivers lush orchestration, velvety vocals and vibrant cuica tones. It's pure escapist bliss.

Review: Gateway by John Abercrombie is a captivating journey through the realms of modern jazz fusion, featuring Abercrombie's masterful guitar work alongside Dave Holland's silky-smooth bass and Jack DeJohnette's dynamic drumming. Seamlessly blends traditional and progressive jazz elements, Abercrombie's compositions showcase intricate band interplay, with tracks like 'May Dance' and 'Jamala' highlighting the trio's ability to shape melodies around each other's instrumentation. Review: Sensory Blending hears Finnish artist Jimi Tenor and Italian group Aura Safari team up for an impromptu studio shebang in Perugia, Italy, after Tenor's storied but clandestine performance at a Hell Yeah party. Despite no prior connection, the musicians quickly found common ground, forging a vivant fusion of jazz-funk, tropicalia and soul. Tenor's psychedelic style gelled Aura Safari's faster, intuited approach, resulting in such tracks as 'Bodily Synesthesia,' 'Bewitched By The Sea' and 'Lunar Wind', each of which connect seductive grooves and ghost noted keys. Possibly performed live at select events later in the year, the record is a perfect storm of recorded "live feel" Balearica.

Review: A standout 1958-1959 recording by Johnny Hodges, Side by Side marked his continued solo work after taking the bold decision to leave the legendary Duke Ellington Orchestra. This album harks back to the small-group sessions of the 1930s but with a twist as Ellington's absence on several tracks meant Billy Strayhorn stepped in on piano. Joining Hodges are jazz legends like Jo Jones, Roy Eldridge and Harry 'Sweets' Edison, who all add colour to the varied collection, which has been newly remastered for Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series. As a follow-up to 1959's Back to Back: Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges Play the Blues, it is another gem from the noted alto saxophonist.

Recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France and produced by Manfred Eicher, the album captures an elevated sense of communication and innovation. Review: A reissue on nice double vinyl for the sixth album from 'sophisti-pop' pioneer Jackson, fusing jazz, funk and soul elements with a post-punk spikiness and a very British outlook, pointing the way forward for the likes of the Style Council and a host of other 80s acts. It first surfaced in 1984 and although it's the first digitally recorded album he made, it's typified sonically by Jackson and producer David Kershenbaum's move to reject the sterile, dead acoustics of modern studios in favour of the Manhattan Masonic Hall, previously mainly used for classicx recording. The jazzy solos, sparkly sax and snazzy chorus of 'You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)' - with just a hint of Afrobeat groove to it too - are probably best known here, but all nine songs number among the Staffordshire-born musician's smartest output.

Unveiling their most experimental work to date, this release brings closure to a story of missed opportunities and stolen glory. Known for shaking up the UK jazz scene, their sound was ahead of its time, with the original label deeming it "too experimental" for the mainstream. Yet, these tracks were not forgottenithey were hijacked, rebranded, and repurposed by another Birmingham band that went on to global fame. Despite the plagiarism, the crude renditions only highlighted the strength of Jazz Sabbath's compositions. Now, with the original tapes mastered and restored, listeners can finally experience the raw brilliance that was meant to change the jazz world. It's a bittersweet triumph, proving that record labels don't always know best. This release offers vindication, as Jazz Sabbath's true legacy is finally heard, showcasing their innovative spirit and undeniable influence on music history.

Though it was originally a studio creation, In Between helped define the genre of nu-jazz upon its 2002 release, where nu-jazz itself always invites live-lounge rejigging. With the Jazzanova Live Band, formed in 2008 and honed over 15 years of touring, the group finally brings a long-plotted album to the stage. The performance is here captured on analogue tape with stellar musicians and vocalists, reinventing, yet at the same time devoting itself to, a classic.

Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim (the 'Tom' in 'Elis & Tom') arranging and performing alongside the remarkable Elis Regina on vocals, the album's arrangements are elegantly minimal which means Regina's vocal prowess is left to shine. Klimt is behind this new reissue on orange vinyl which sounds as good as ever. The grace of the vocals and the sunny melodies are truly escapist no matter your milieu and help make this a standout record from two of Brazil's greatest stars.

Review: The newly issued and remastered Movement by The Joe Harriott Quintet revisits one of the most innovative jazz albums of the 1960s. Originally released in 1963, it's a stunning work that showcases Harriott's pioneering work in "free form" jazz as he blends Caribbean influences with avant-garde improvisation. Harriott, alongside his stellar quintet which includes trumpeter Shake Keane and pianist Pat Smythe explores experimental yet accessible compositions to create an engaging balance between structured melodies and freeform expression. This edition enhances the album's clarity and offers a fresh chance to take in its bold, genre-defying sounds, which means it remains a must-listen for jazz aficionados jay also reaffirms Harriott's legacy as a British jazz innovator.

Review: The 6th Annual Antibes Jazz Festival was held in Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera from 24th to 30th July, 1965. Performing artists included the sublime jazz and soul superstars such as Donald Byrd and Nina Simone as well as the great John Coltrane. The jazz don played with his quartet which included pianist McCoy Tyner, drummer Elvin Jones, and bassist Jimmy Garrison. They played on both July 26 and 27 and both sets were recorded by French television and released in 1988 as this album - Live in Antibes - which now gets reissued on double vinyl. Coltrane died of liver cancer less than a year later.

Accompanied by his "Classic Quartet"i which was of course made up of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jonesi the one they called 'Trane engaged in lengthy, intense improvisations on pieces like 'Impressions' and 'My Favorite Things.' Review: Verve By Request repress Elvin Jones and Richard Davis' Heavy Sounds, one of the few recorded collaborations between the drummer and bassist ever laid to disc. The title is debatable if not misleading, as we'd wager that most listeners would typify this record as decidedly 'light' in feel. Recorded for Impulse in 1967, a session originally intended to be a trio date morphed into an 11 1/2-minute duet, on the album Summertime, between drummer Jones and bassist Davis, after the guitarist did not appear. The following day, saxophonist Frank Foster and pianist Billy Greene joined in to round out the rest of the cuts including 'Elvin's Guitar Blues', which features Jones' only recorded guitar performance.

Review: A definitive master of jazz, soul and pop sounds across the decades, Quincy Jones pulled off another gem with this genre-defying collection. It highlights an unparalleled level of musical craftsmanship where the arrangements are lush and use orchestral instruments, funky rhythms and smooth vocals to create a timeless sound. Standout tracks like 'What's Going On?' and 'Theme From The Anderson Tapes' showcase Jones' ability to merge complex jazz harmonies with commercial appeal. He also balances upbeat tracks with introspective, slower tunes with the result reflecting Quincy's deep influence on the music of the last half-century.

By this time, he had already worked alongside jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Tommy Flanagan while leading his own quartet. On this record, Articulation, Jones is joined by an impressive lineup including Wallace Roney III on trumpet, Arthur Blythe on alto sax, Bob Mintzer on tenor sax and others besides. Review: Thad Jones' The Magnificent Thad Jones is a stunning album that beautifully showcases the beauty of hard bop. Released in 1956, it reflects the era's evolving jazz landscape, influenced by modern jazz pioneers like Horace Silver and Miles Davis. The album's tracks, including original compositions like 'Billy-Boo' and 'Thedia,' exude a relaxed yet lively vibe, typical of hard bop. Jones' trumpet work shines throughout, displaying a remarkable blend of relaxation and intensity in his solos. The ensemble's chemistry, especially between Detroit-raised musicians like pianist Barry Harris and Jones, is palpable, supported by the solid foundation laid by Percy Heath and Max Roach. Rudy Van Gelder's recording in Hackensack, New Jersey, harnasses the warmth and depth of Jones' trumpet sound, adding to the album's allure. The Magnificent Thad Jones is a timeless gem that continues to enchant jazz enthusiasts with its impeccable execution and rich musicality.

It's a record that offers up their evolving sound and one that goes beyond the traditional piano trio format. The music exudes a remarkable sense of telepathy and intimacy which is evident from the first moments of Gravity. Formed in 2000, the trio's bond extends beyond music, with Joona, Olavi, and Tapani's friendship dating back to childhood in Jyvaskyla, Finland so their deep connection has been built over years of playing together. Review: Cliff Craft is a standout gem in Blue Note's 1500 series and one of the rarest treasures. This superb album features Clifford Jordan on tenor sax, alongside Art Farmer (trumpet), Sonny Clark (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums). It's a smooth, soulful journey that captivates from the first note. The album opens with Jordan's composition 'Laconia,' setting the tone with a relaxing, immersive sound. Jordan's craftsmanship shines throughout, especially on 'Soul-Lo Blues,' a bluesy, enjoyable tune that highlights his exceptional talent. The title track, Cliff Craft, is a fast-tempo, hard-bop piece that showcases Jordan's rich tenor sound and the superb rhythm section. Side-2 kicks off with 'Confirmation,' a medium-tempo Bird tune that features laid-back solos from Jordan and Farmer. Clark's smooth, flowing solo adds to the track's charm. 'Sophisticated Lady,' a beautiful ballad by Duke Ellington, stands out as a favorite slow tune. The album concludes with the driving energy of Parker and Gillespie's 'Anthropology,' leaving you wanting more. Cliff Craft is one of the finest Blue Note records ever made.

Review: At just 22, Samara Joy is still rather young to be kicking it in the jazz world. It's a genre that requires life to be lived somewhat before real emotions can be distilled into the mic. However, here she makes her Verve debut and showcases a voice that evokes great legends of the genre like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her phrasing, tone and vocal control place her among these icons despite her youth and Samara's voice, already rich with timeless elegance, carries the weight of jazz's history while still feeling remarkably fresh and exciting. With this remarkable debut, she is surely poised to become a defining figure in jazz music.

Colours Of My Dream
The Eleven Eight Song
Review: Behind the unassuming monotone cover of Colours, Judy Bailey's 1976 electric soul-jazz masterpiece, lies a richly textured, spirited recording that defies its minimalist presentation. A central figure in Australian jazz for over 70 years, pianist and composer Bailey captured the shifting jazz landscape of mid-70s Australia with Colours, a pivotal album in the country's transition from semi-acoustic jazz to electric jazz-funk. Often compared to the smooth production of Creed Taylor's CTI label, Colours features crisp drums, processed bass, and soul-jazz arrangements akin to those heard on Bob James and Joe Farrell albums, while also incorporating influences from the sensual vocals of Flora Purim and the lively flute work of Hubert Laws. Bailey's fusion of these elements with her own signature style creates a warm, sophisticated atmosphere. Tracks like the funky 'Fall Down Dead', the Latin-tinged 'Toledo', the vibrant 'Colours of My Dream' and the expansive 'The Eleven Eight Song' showcase her ability to blend genres seamlessly. With contributions from saxophonist and flutist Ken James, the album's grooves are both refined and raw, adding to its timeless appeal. Now reissued by The Roundtable, this seminal Australian jazz recording is available on vinyl in a replica gatefold sleeve, allowing new listeners to experience its vibrant energy firsthand.

Possibly the most vibrant jazz record to emerge from Australia, it shows Bailey has a dynamic piano style and why she has long been a key figure in Sydney's studio scene. In later years, she gained recognition as a composer, contributing to film scores, children's music and education. This newly remastered reissue brings her unique sound to a new generation who will likely fall for her impeccable rhythm and jazz flurries once more.

Review: Strut's latest release is a freshly remastered edition of Juju's influential 1974 album Chapter Two: Nia which is bound to excite those looking for a nice copy of this unique record. This reissue shines a spotlight on Juju's unique fusion of Afrocentric jazz and black nationalist poetry, recorded during a transformative period for the band. Founded in San Francisco and relocated to New York in 1972, Jujuiled by James "Plunky" Branchiimmersed themselves in the avant-garde scene, performing at notable venues like Slugs and Ornette Coleman's loft. By 1974, the band had moved to Richmond, Virginia, seeking a creative refuge from New York's high living costs. They settled into what they called the Juju Raga Artist House, a cultural hub that also functioned as the state's first black arts gallery and performance space. Chapter Two: Nia, recorded at Eastern Recording Studios, reflects Juju's commitment to Afrocentric themes and includes a freeform rendition of Pharoah Sanders' 'Black Unity.' The reissue retains the original artwork, adapted from a concert video by Collis Davis, and has been remastered by The Carvery for enhanced sound quality. It also features new liner notes from Plunky Branch, offering deeper insights into the band's revolutionary impact and creative journey.

Review: If you're not familiar with the 1973 American-Philippine action movie Savage! then join the club. Distributed through Roger Corman's New World Pictures, the Cirio H. Santiago production was one of around 40 that the Hollywood legend worked on at far lower costs in the Asian island nation compared with back in the US. A somewhat exploitative business model taking advantage of lower wages in a developing country, the story also used more than a few totems of the Blaxploitation canon to tell the tale of a criminal who winds up getting caught up in a revolution to overthrow a military government. Heavy stuff dealt with in a pulp fiction style, the score reflects this - funk filled guitar licks, slap bass and woodwind hooks. Hip hop selectors take note, then, there's plenty to play with here.

Review: Following years of notable collaborations with some of jazz's leading voices, saxophonist and band leader Walter Smith III finally broke through in 2023 via a first headlining album for Blue Note. On his return to the label, Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not, Smith pays tribute to the Texan city of his birth in the company of Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Smith (bass). It's a pleasingly breezy, positive and expertly crafted affair, with the quartet running through a series of ear-catching Smith compositions and a radical (and rather good) interpretation of an old Sam Rivers number. A wholehearted tribute to the rarely discussed cultural richness and diversity of Smith's home city.

Review: Daniel Sommer's Sounds & Sequences, the second entry in his Nordic Trilogy, ventures deeper into the nuances of Nordic improvisation. Featuring Norwegian trumpeter Arve Henriksen and Swedish bassist Johannes Lundberg, the album takes an adventurous approach, blending chamber music, spiritual jazz and ambient influences. Recorded at Gothenburg's Studio Epidemin, the trio navigated the sessions without set guidelines, letting intuitive improvisation guide each track. The album's atmosphere is distinctly expansive and haunting. In 'Vejen Til Epidemic', Henriksen's ethereal trumpet melodies float over Lundberg's deep bass and Sommer's textured cymbal accents, creating a tone both ominous and inviting. 'Hey, Superhero' adds a more aggressive edge, as Henriksen's airy trumpet soars against grounding basslines and Sommer's more assertive stick work. 'On Blue - Seven', subtle electronic touches and reverberant trumpet evoke a foghorn's call in a shadowy soundscape, while Beautiful Daisy brings in Henriksen's otherworldly falsetto, crafting an eerie, ritualistic feel. The title track's primal drumming and electronic effects add a rock-infused urgency, with Henriksen's falsetto peaking in a raw crescendo. Sounds & Sequences boldly explores Nordic soundscapes, blending electronic and acoustic realms in a stirring album.
