Mun Dun Go
Cat: SJR 48012. Rel: 03 Nov 22
Cedric Im Brooks - "Mun Dun Go" (3:15)
Sound Dimension - "Heavy Rock" (2:56)
Review: Here's a killer reissue from the Soul Jazz archives which is finally getting a repress. It's hardly surprising when the reissue becomes as sought after as the holy grail original jam from 1970, a sublime instrumental anthem of soulful, skanking perfection with Cedric Im Brooks flexing his sax in glorious style over a beautifully rough n' ready rhythm. It was shortly after this recording was laid down Brooks went on to form The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari with Count Ossie, which tells you all you need to know about the heritage we're dealing with here.

Zarenzeit - "Deep Work" (6:41)
Stefano De Santis - "Song For George D" (4:19)
Future Jazz Ensemble - "Freeway" (4:31)
Caruso - "Vestimenta" (6:06)
Review: Ten Lovers always manage to find a perfect sweet spot between jazz and house on the music it serves up. This new various artists' effort proves the point well: Marcello Cassanelli lunches the trip with groovy and nodding bass synths and airy vocal cries on 'Fantasia.' Zarenzeit then sinks into a bubbly groove with killer drums and sun-worshiping synths before Stefano De Santis drops some excellent broken beast on his squelchy synth workout 'Song For George D.' Future Jazz Ensemble takeoff into the cosmos and Caruso gets romantic on 'Vestimenta'.

Pick Up The Pieces (reissue)
Cat: BRZ45 019R. Rel: 20 Dec 24
Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:13)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:04)
Review: Mr Bongo restock a brilliant 7" in their signature Brazil 45s series. The nineteenth to grace it, this blue-starred slice of small wax shone a light on Wilson das Neves' brilliant cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' on the A, as well as a Mr Bongo fave on the B, Som Tres' potent samba-funk overflow 'Tanga'. The former flexes the historic muscles of a mythic Brazilian percussionist and vibesman, lending fidgety soft feels to AWB's already lull-lifting concoction; then 'Tanga' contrasts to this sense of measuredness with pure animal verve, as Tres' calls out to his bandmates commandingly amid whirlwinds of piano and drums.

Lisa Decker & Nautilus - "Summer Child" (4:21)
Review: Lisa Decker makes a return with two new singles here that are taken from her upcoming album which is due in May of this year. It comes two years after her debut with the Japanese jazz trio Nautilus and marks something of a conceptual shift in her sound. 'Love & Hope' finds her turn in a stylish jazz vocal with funky bass loops and organic drums and percussion that straddle many different genres. 'Summer Child' then sinks into a nice smooth jazz-funk vibe with soft focus chords bringing a touch of class to her breezy vocals.

007 Mambo

Dr No & The Cuban Mafia - "007 Mambo" (Texas Toni Skyfall re-edit)
Sundance Kid - "South American Getaway" (Texas Toni Jazz Dance re-edit)
Review:  Two dancefloor bombs which should make tasty additions to your record box. Dr No & The Cuban Maffia are a six piece outfit from Central Havana who recorded this tribute, ''007 Mambo'' as a nod to Ian Fleming's Mr Bond back in the late 1970s, along with dozens of other cover versions to assist their own compositions in their live repertoire. This version was originally only 90 seconds long, so Texas Toni extends the journey with some funky Latino peak time pressure. On the flip, Sundance Kid drops an infamous soundtrack and Texas Toni re-edits the original parts, disposing of the downtempo elements to concentrate purely on the dancefloor potential.

Elis Regina - "Ye Me Le" (2:19)
Senay - "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman" (3:39)
Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Turkey's Senay features on the flip with "En Buyuk Sansin Yasiyor Olman", an incandescent lover's ballad that makes a welcome change to the more widely heard Turkish psych sound of the '70s.

Fat Joe - "Bronx Tale" (feat KRS One) (3:53)
Sammy Nestico - "Shoreline Drive" (3:26)
Review: 5 Borough Breaks always serves up the working DJ with the sort of vital tools they need to get beat loving floors jacked up and moving. Here a load more iconic of the ages are chawed up and spat out on a new two track 7 " that features none other than legendary MC KRS One as well as American champ Fat Joe and Sammy Nestico. 'Bronx Tale' goes first with a nice laid back beat, funky bass and some edgy breaks that build a vibe while the KRS One rhymes come hard. Flip it over for 'Shoreline Drive' which is a soul led tune with soaring wind sounds, big cinematic drama and a hint of 60s style.

Review: Legendary jazz label Blue Note has tapped up the super hot nine-piece Afro-jazz outfit Nubiyan Twist for their own new version of Donald Byrd's song 'Through The Noise.' It features on the 16-track Blue Note Re:imagined II collection that is due soon, but first also gets its own pressing here. Heavy swing, garage and 2-step all colour their version with broken-beat, afrobeat and bebop also colouring the fresh sounding grooves. The lyrics build the reimagined concept and make for a stunning new piece. On the flip is another gem in the form of Swindle's 'Miss Kane.'

Shehzadi (3:21)
Ranjha (4:07)
Review: 'Shehzadi' (which means "Princess") is an Indo-disco gem featuring Solomon's Hindi vocals over Sababa 5's blend of hypnotic drums, nice pulsing bass, bright electric guitar and sparkling synths in a minor key. It channels '80s nostalgia with a modern twist and so rather evokes a Stranger Things meets Bollywood-type vibe. 'Ranjha' (which means 'Lover') shifts to a Middle Eastern feel with synths that echo traditional instruments like the saz. The upbeat groove complements Solomon's dynamic vocals and is filled with hope while dramatic pauses and an exuberant synth solo from Sophia add extra flair to make for a compelling mix of emotion and energy.

Review: The legendary GAMM is as reliable as the sunrise and sunset each day. It always comes through with the DJ freindly, party ready sounds from whatever genre it sees fit. Here it is Japan's Dai San who comes back to the label with a second EP that finds him heading off on a jazzy escapade. The three tunes take in dazzling disco-jazz, fantastic fusion-funk and deep rare grooves that touch you to your core. 'Sundance' opens up in busy, peak time fashion with plenty of Japanese influences over an Azymuth style carnival beat. The flip is for the deeper workouts including the spaced-out and highly melodic 'Nite Sprite'.

Ramybe (7:59)
Autoportretas (5:05)
Review: The state51 Conspiracy label comes very much correct early on in the New Year with this two-track grey marbled vinyl 12" in a fancy spot-varnished sleeve. It takes the form of two fresh Santaka reworks of original compositions by Rytis Mazulis and avant-garde choir Melos Collective which were first released back in 2020. Santaka, which means "confluence" in Lithuanian, is the coming together of DJ and producer Manfredas and drummer and producer Marijus Aleksa and here they layer up disembodied vocals and dark jazz melodies on 'Ramybe' and then 'Autoportretas' is a textural ambient exploration packed with fascinating sound designs.

Review: Reference Library dig deep into the archives for this glorious new 7" which comes in super limited quantities. It features Italian artists Santucci and Castiglione taking one side each with their own lush jazz and library tinged instrumentals. Santucci goes first with 'Mediterraneo,' a turbulent brew of double bass and prominent horn work that whips up a real storm as the drums come crashing down like waves on rocks. On the flip side is the lovely 'Castiglione,' a more silky and funky roller with plenty of subtle 60s references and psyched-out details. ''

This one is another dive into the vaults of composer Masahiko Sato and upon returning to the surface we're presented with a bunch of the 13 lost cuts that never made it onto to Italian-only sound track album first time round. Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Home Is Where the Hatred Is
Review: Wow, classics don't come much more special than this. A like-for-like repress of the 1970 RCA release, both sides here are soaked in Scott Heron's raw troubled soul. The endlessly sampled, hugely powerful and perfectly funky "Revolution" remains almost as poignant and prophetic as it was the day it was penned. "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" is much more personal and reveals his talent as a singer as much as the lead track boasts his poetry and ability to deliver a strong message.

Review: If you don't already own a copty of Gil Scott-Heron classic "The Bottle", one of the many highlights from the pioneering spoken word artist and musician's 1974 collaboration with Brian Jackson, "Winter In America", then we'd heartily recommend picking up one of these limited-edition, white vinyl singles. For the uninitiated, the track features Scott-Heron musing on alcoholism and poverty over a killer flute-laden soul-funk groove. This time round it comes backed by another Scott-Heron/Jackson gem, "Johannesburg" - a more musically inventive and bluesy meditation on arpartheid first featured on the pair's 1975 album "From South Africa To South Carolina".

Review: Not to be confused with the Hazel Scott from USA, this Hazel Scott hailed from South Africa and recorded a couple of limited singles in the early 70s. Her self-titled four-track came out in 1973 on a Portugese label called Estudio, and it was pretty damned hard to come by. With notes of funk and a general swooning romanticism at its heart thanks to the arrangement from Izio Gross, this is a diggers delight finally brought back into the realms of accessibility thanks to a reissue via Groovie which keeps the original artwork intact.

Review: Back in the 60s and 70s, library music exploded as a genre. It saw plenty of talented musicians make extra cash by laying down endless instrumental grooves for use in TV, film and radio. The King Underground label is now digging into the vast vaults for a new series of releases of some of the finest sounds from the era. He passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack, but his legacy certainly lives on, with French label Dd Lahouve Production reissuing some of his finest work here from back in 2012. Review: This is the third installment in the Local Sugar Diggers Series from Scruniversal in which old and rare records from the label head's friend's collections get reworked and edited. This one is a collab between ScruScru and an equally passionate digger from Cyprus known as Dwaal. Both tunes offer quite different looks but with great results. The first is the steamy and loose-limbed 'Destination? Funk!' with its squelchy bass and neat guitar riffs, while the flipside is a super deep and lush downtempo jam, 'Camelot Chill'. It is a brilliantly evocative offering that brings to mind warm summer morning and hay sunsets with lots of tender sax lines, florid fleets and Latin-flecked percussion. Review: This marks a first 7" from bassist and composer Shay Hazan playing alongside his quintet in their native Tel Aviv, Israel. The a-side is a dedication to a giant of the Israeli jazz scene and a sometime mentor of Hazan, saxophonist Albert Beger, with uptempo chord work and swirling drums that make you want to spin around like you just don't care. After that bit of joyous but sophisticated jazz comes 'Old Tart', a more slow burning tune that builds through big horns, spare but dramatic chords and tumbling percussion until you are in raptures. The fourth release from cd exclusive vinyl pressers Jai Alai, collectors can now own this unique 7" containing two completely different sides of Sir Wick from his two albums. Complementing it, Mr Bongos present a rarity discovered from one of their trips to Brazil with the horn heavy delights of "Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente" from the unknown Elizabeth uncovered whilst digging through the now defunct Sao Paolo vinyl spot Tony's Hits.

Nagoriyuki (3:40)
Review: By now, we've become accustomed to Japanese outfit Inosakira Rangers offering up reggae and vintage rocksteady style cover versions of pop and dance tracks of old. Their latest cover, of James Brown classic 'Sex Machine', is a little different. It's no less warm, dusty or on-point than its predecessors, but there's no reggae or rocksteady flex - just a warmer, more laidback take on the funk classic, complete with distinctive lead vocals from Keichi Sokabe. They're back in lazy, Sunday afternoon rocksteady mode on original B-side 'Nagoriyuki', a sweet and quietly soulful number that pushes the band's bassist and organist - or more specifically their fine instrumentation - high in the mix for added nostalgic pleasure.

Review: SOLO 500 is back on their own self-titled label with the third entry in Galaxy Sound Company's series and again it digs deep into jazz-funk to turn out some killer breaks. Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. On the backside is an edit of a tune from Manfred Mann Chapter Three's self-titled 1969 LP. This one has been famously sampled by The Prodigy. Another great little 7".

Un Homme Et Une Femme (2:59)
Review: Stroom has another great audio curiosity on its hands here with this 7" from Sonoko. She is a Japanese artist who works in the worlds of ambient and ambient, chanson and elevator, experimental and folk. Both of the cuts here are uplifting sounds that will bring some joy to the gloom of this season. They were made by the artist somewhere in the 90s with 'Meditation' a sensuous sound with hotel lobby piano playing and delicate vocals while 'Un homme et une femme' has a more icy and cold electronic sound with delicate keys twinkling like snow.

Summoning The Monkey God (45 edit) (3:22)
End Credits (1:49)
End Credits (alternate version) (1:51)
Review: Initially inspired by the work of Ethiopian composer Mulatu Astatke, the Sorcerers are a heavy funk outfit that draws on a variety of influences, from African jazz, soul and funk, to 1970s spy movie soundtracks and obscure library music. They have a new album due in early 2020, hence this taster single. A-side "Summoning The Monkey God" is a lolloping, high-grade affair that sits somewhere between Blaxploitation funk, Roy Budd's soundtrack for "Get Carter" and dusty Italian library music. On the flip you'll find two versions of "End Credits", an up-tempo library funk workout rich in hazy horn lines, Hammond organ licks, wah-wah guitars and flute solos courtesy of storied British musician Chip Wickham.

The Sorcerers - "Exit Athens"
The Outer Worlds Jazz Ensemble - "Beg, Borrow, Play" (feat Chip Wickham)
Review: The Sorcerers usher in something of a new era here with Exit Athens, which is a further investigation of the worlds of Ethio-jazz and library music from the 60s and 70s. Now the group consists of Joost Hendrickx who has made his mark with the likes of Kefaya, Shatner's Bassoon and Abstract Orchestra, as well as Richard Ormrod on saxes, keys and flutes and ATA label head and bassist Neil Innes. The rhythms here are driving and funky with exotic percussion and plenty of vintage keys as well as great combinations of horns, flutes and vibes. It's a maximal sound but one drenched in soul and which immediately transports you to another world.

The Sorcerers - "In Pursuit Of Shai Hulud" (3:41)
The Yorkshire Film & Television Orchestra - "The Anderson Spectrum" (3:00)
Review: The Sorcerers have been a mainstay of the ATA Records imprint since it was founded in their home city of Leeds back in 2015. Here, the Yorkshire combo, whose primary influences have always been Ethopian "Ethio-jazz" and obscure European horror soundtracks, return to action with a heavyweight dancefloor workout. In truth "In Search of Sha Hulud" is a far more funk-fuelled affair than you might expect, with exoitic Middle Eastern melodies and fluttering flute solos rising above killer drum breaks and a seriously heavy bassline. Turn to the flipside for "The Anderson Spectrum", a pitched-down, 1960s style library funk jam credited to The Yorkshire Film and Television Orchestra, which appears to be another project helmed by leading members of the Sorcerers.

Ultima Caccia (3:54)
Review: Four Flies present the first ever 45rpm to be taken from Giuliano Sorgini's masterpiece album Zoo Folle. The library and soundtrack specialist cooked up some irresistibly groovy and funky sounds on the record and two of the best are picked here for serious DJ deployment only. 'Mad Town' opens up with some killer and funky drum breaks with a slick flute line adding extra pizzazz up top. It's a psyched out number for big dance floor moments an on the flip, 'Ultima Caccia' is a more Afro-tinged and tribal number with blissed out drums from Giuliano and some mad funky percussion by session player Enzo Restuccia.

Non Si Deve Profanare Il Sonno Dei Morti (Soundtrack)
John Dalton Street (2:25)
Manchester M2 6LD (2:26)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of cult Italian horror movies should be aware of the work of Giulliano Sorgini, and in particular his soundtrack to Non Si Deve Profanre Il Sonno Dei Mortie (a movie known in English as both The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie). This Four Flies Records' "45" boasts two of the most potent recordings from the soundtrack. On the A-side you'll find the movie's main theme, 'John Dalton Theme', a superb slab of zombified psych-funk laden with simmering horror strings, loose-limbed percussion solos, crunchy drum-breaks and toasty bass. Over o the flip you'll find 'Manchester M2 6LD', a stripped-back reprise version that replaces Sorgini's cut-glass strings with sustained Hammond organ chords. Happily, the killer groove and righteous drum solos remain in-tact.

Tito's Revenge (3:22)
Aftermath (4:14)
Review: The Soul Motivators made quite an impact with their Do Right! Music released 2013 debut album, Free To Believe. Somewhat surprisingly, Tito's Revenge marks their first appearance on wax since. The title track is, predictably, something of a horn-heavy gem. It effortlessly joins the dots between fuzzy early '70s funk, Hammond-heavy grooves, and the kind of dusty Afro-funk that's all the rage right now. The Afro-funk influence is even stronger on similarly killer flipside "Aftermath". While sadly not a funk cover of the Nightmares on Wax rave classic of the same name (now that would have been something), it nevertheless packs a serious punch - thanks, in no small part, to a series of sparring horn solos.

Bonita Applebum (Daylight) (4:04)
Review: Some 4D chess going on here from fast-rising Amsterdam keys player and producer Soul Supreme, whose cover versions of two classic A Tribe Called Quest cuts also incorporate more replayed musical elements of the tunes that the legendary hip-hop crew originally sampled to create them. They're probably best thought of as tributes rather than straight-up covers but that's no criticism, as both tracks are excellent. 'Award Tour (We Gettin' Down)' is simultaneously both a live hip-hop head-nodder and a luscious slab of string-sporting jazz-funk righteousness, while 'Bonita Applebum (Daylight)' is a languid, slow motion affair rich in sun-down jazz guitar licks, slowly rising horns, beefy bass and loose-limbed drums. Highly alluring!

Review: You don't immediately think of soul and funk bands hailing from Russia, but The Soul Surfers ride that dichotomy with pride. They broke through with the Soul Rock! album on Ubiquity, and they've been working closely with Janko Nilovic in recent years. Back in 2019 they offered up their version of the Kool & The Gang classic 'Summer Madness', and it instantly became hugely sought after. Now Ubiquity are doing the right thing and giving it a repress, this time with a different sleeve for the Japanese market, but handily available right here. Russian funk never sounded so good.

Russian Funk (3:48)
Funky Sirtaki (2:33)
Review: In recent times, Russian outfit the Soul Surfers - whose studio is reportedly kitted out with vintage, Soviet-era gear - have focused on delivering a particularly psychedelic take on classic library music. On this top-notch 45 for Spasibo Records, they blend their love of quirky 1970s library sounds with the deep funk grooves that marked out their earliest releases a decade ago. A-side 'Russian Funk' offers a near-perfect blend of loose-limbed, bass-heavy funk grooves, spiralling Moog solos, recorder melodies (really), crisp guitars and reverb aplenty. Flip-side 'Funky Sirtaki', meanwhile, is basically a funk take on of those traditional Russian or Greek dance tunes that gets faster as it progresses. It will likely create pandemonium out on the dancefloor.
