Review: ***B-STOCK: Record sleeve damaged, product in working order***

Tomede Ehue and Tp Orchestre Poly-rythmo are giants of the global afro scene and to have them together on one 12" is a masterstroke. This third offering from Canopy features the title track from a hard to find Afro 7" that was initially only put out via private press in a Benin label in 1980. Little his known about Tomede Ehue but she is an undeniable talent, and in cahoots with Beninois powerhouse TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou they are unstoppable. Bosq and Sam Redmore provide remixes to this superb package.

Funky Disco Music (Riccio rerub) (7:46)
Review: Afro disco fresh from 79: Eko Roosevelt Louis's third album Funky Disco Music will go down as one of Cameroon's finest disco LPs. Produced and pressed by French label Dragon Phenix, it's still reasonably easy to track down, too. For a taster, grab three of its tropical charms on this Fly By Night repress: "Funky Disco Music" is an infectious vocal-led cut that's written solely to make people get down, "Ndolo Embe Mulema" struts with much more Afro rock fusion while the harmonies of "Bowa'a Mba Ngebe" are sweeter than the finest honey you've ever tasted. For contemporary kicks Riccio has expertly touched the title track for a modern dancefloor/DJ friendly punch. Perfect.

Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

Darling (3:50)
Review: The electrifying return of El Combo Batanga. The Afro-Cuban band and Ubiquity Records favourites descend upon us once more in a sallying storm of Isthmian lightning, bridging the spirit of classic Fania and Tico Records releases, and whipping them back around and through gales of Latin funk, son, timba and boogaloo. "Batanga" refers to the traditional Cuban instrument heard throughout their records, if you listen closely: new A cut 'La Cuota' brings an urgent, hyperbolic funk, while 'Darling' contrasts with nixie moods, a heart-burning Latin soul lament.

Review: Madrid via Cuba musical gang El Combo Batanga have finally dropped this new double-sider 7". It was teased by the early reals sou the a-side which brings plenty of dance floor filing heat with 'El Que La Rompe La Paga'. It's packed with samba shuffle, expressive horn work and results, and relentless keys work designed to get the ass moving. On the flip is 'Toca La Campana' which is a little less dense but not less rhythmic in the way it sways to and fro with fiery Spanish vocals and funk riffs.

Vudu Y Chachacha (feat Rakaa Iriscience Of Dilated Peoples - Professor Shorthair remix) (3:53)
Review: Emerging from Austin's vibrant music scene, El Combo Oscuro infuses Latin psychedelia with the mystical essence of New Orleans. Their track 'Vudu y Chachacha' marries pulsating percussion with echoing guitars and a steady bassline, creating an entrancing soundscape. On Side-1 features a remix by New Orleans' Professor Shorthair, who transforms the original into a dance-floor anthem. With Rakaa Iriscience of Dilated Peoples lending his distinctive vocals, the remix amplifies the track's infectious groove. Presented on a limited edition 45 rpm, the bone-colored vinyl with blue and violet splatter adds a visual flair to the auditory experience. Both sides of this are a fine fusion of Latin rhythms and modern beats, offering a fresh take on cross-genre innovation.

Saludos Desde Oakland (3:59)
Review: El Mero Guero Sonidero is a fairly well known DJ on the Californian cumbia underground, though this seems to be the Bay Area resident's debut single release. As with many cuts on Discos Mas, "Cumbia Chulita" offers a suitably 21st century take on the Colombian genre, with traditional elements - accordions, vocals, hand percussion - sitting side by side with hip-hop vocal samples, intergalactic synth lines, heavy sub bass and shuffling drum machine beats. His love of dub delays, wild synthesizer lines and spoken vocals comes to the fore on spaced-out B-side "Saludos Desde Oakland", which is pretty out there despite the presence of a relentless cumbia riddim.

Zaharila (3:43)
Review: Leon Michel's El Michels Affair has always grabbed our attention, since the very early days of the Juno website, back in the early 00s. The New York outfit, an instrumental collective that seems to change every decade, have been experimenting with jazz and all sorts of ethereal styles from across the globe. This new single, out through the trusted Big Crown label, is perhaps one of their most memorable outings of the last 5 years. The title track, "Unathi", is a mystical voyage across time and space, with psyched-out vocals riding high above a solid trip-hop groove and a marvelous array of trippy atmospherics. On the flip, "Zaharila" is a slower, moodier piece that speaks to the heart, spewing horns and tough beats from every angle, making it instantly recognizable and, yes, as seductive as most of El Michels Affair's music. Excellent.

Si Yo Volviera A Nacer (Aires De Huelva) (3:17)
Review: NuNorthern Soul's 2021 Record Store Day offering is something of a treat. It's a fresh reissue of an impossible-to-find promo 45 first issued to promote Flamenco legend El Turronero's 1980 disco album, EL Hondo. It features two tracks that have long been regular features in the sets of many dusty-fingered Balearic selectors, especially globe-trotting cult leader DJ Harvey. On the A-side you'll find the cosmic, driving, synth-laden brilliance of 'Las Penas (La Cana) - a genuine "everything but the kitchen sink" affair topped off by El Turronero's distinctive vocals - while the more exotic 'Si Yo Volviera Al Nacer', where synths and Sitars accompany the Flamenco-disco grooves, resides on the flip.

Review: After a series of successful releases on labels like Razor-n-Tape, music archaeologist and groove master Elado now launches his own imprint Big Baba Records. The debut features some real dancefloor essentials starting with 'Sawanna,' an Afro-disco banger with a driving beat and captivating vocals while 'Baby Music' offers a funky bassline and infectious hooks. 'Discochari' is a rare Armenian disco track reworked into a global anthem that is sure to have everyone chanting along. Last but not least is Antal favourite 'I Wanna' which is a high-energy Afro-disco track designed for late-night, fast-paced moments that won't be soon forgotten. Do You Really Love Me (Elado edit) (7:12)
Shake Your Body (Elado edit) (3:39)
Review: While GAMM's hip-hop and R&B reworks are always a cut above those put out by the label's competitors, there's a strong argument to be made that the disco, soul and jazz-funk re-edits they release are even better. More evidence to back up this assertion can be found on this tidy two-track missive from label debutant Elado. On the A-side he gives his spin on a powerful, horn-and-synth-laden number from a rare Archie Dell LP, subtly making the drums heavier while retaining the original's gospel-influenced soaring soul feel. Arguably even better is 'Shake Your Body', a fine rearrangement of a little-known, Portuguese language cover version of the Michael Jackson disco classic of the same name.

Massi Tobo (5:18)
Review: After successfully showcasing his wares via EPs on GAMM, Razor N Tape and Barefoot Beats, fast-rising re-editor Elado pitches up on Bonfido Disques for the very first time. The resultant 12" contains some of his most interesting re-edits yet, with Elado cunningly opting for eccentric and oddball source material. 'Deepy Mango' sounds like a cross between proto-house, post-punk synth-pop and Kwaito - and that's a great thing in our book - while 'Space Lokum' is a throbbing revision of what sounds like a North African electro-disco obscurity (an Arab take on the Giorgio Moroder sound, basically). Over on the flip, 'Massi Tobi' is a boogie-era tropical disco gem from the Francosphere given a subtle makeover. In a word: excellent!

Elado - "Tudo Magia" (4:25)
Bernardo Pinheiro - "Pitangamanguearaca" (7:05)
Review: The latest limited-edition ten-inch from Brazil's Barefoot beats label offers up two more carnival-ready edits from two rising stars of the nu-disco and edit scenes. Israeli producer Elado handles side A, following up inspired outings on Razor 'N' Tape and Red Motorbike with a subtly beefed-up take on a samba-soaked 1970s MPB gem. Full of heady Brazilian percussion, simmering orchestration, sing-along vocals and jaunty guitars, 'Tudo Magia' is just begging to be played loud in the sunshine. Over on the flip, series regular Bernando Pinheiro takes over, significantly tooling up an excitable Latin disco number via heavier bass and some tough additional percussion. Like the A-side, it sounds like the kind of thing that would get people going as the sun goes down at a music festival.

Review: Mushroom Pillow is on a proud and so far successful mission to bring back Latin American music from the 60s-80s via its Relatin project. it's all about mixing up the traditional and the modern and putting fresh spins on what went before. Many of the originals they look to have gone unnoticed the first time round and that's the case here as Franc Moody adds his own twist to Elia & Elizabeth's 'Alegria.' His remix is a sympathetic one that gets the hips swinging over fat and funky disco bass and beneath the sunny Latin vocals. He strips them away on the instrumental version on the flip.

Review: Elia and Elisabeth Fleta Malloi is the sisterly Colombian twosome known for their pop ditties as Elia y Elizabeth. Their Alegria album is a much loved record for deep diggers that got reissued a couple of years ago, and Razor N Tape have served up a selection of tunes and remixes from it. Now we get the original pressed up to its own 45 rpm courtesy of Vampi Soul. It is a sunny bit of easygoing soul with plenty of orchestral grandeur, big horn energy and the gently lilting vocals of the sisters up top. These are gloriously feel-good sounds from this superb duo.

Review: The Brazil 45 series from Mr Bongo bursts through the picture with yet another rocking 7" fire starter by two vintage pop greats - we have to say, their format simply works. First up is Elis Regina, a Brazilian singer who released a countless pop records back in the '60s, and "Ye Me Le" is a soft, seductive Brazilian soul warmer complete with blasting trumpets and that inimitable South American percussion swagger. Review: Germany's Legere Recordings is the home of authentic, modern funk and jazz. For this tasty 7" outing, Welsh musician Carwyn Ellis and Rio 18 link with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for an alarmingly exotic tune given its country of origin. This is samba drenched in sun, with all the authentic drums, soaring strings and percussive details you would expect next to some great lead flute work. That's the case on 'Ola' anyway, the more upbeat party starter, while 'Ti' is a sentimental and slow-motion ballad for weepy moments.

Two sides shrouded with his signature eastern haze, "Ominous Shanti" sees the horns gradually melting in the heat while the intricately laced percussion holds the groove together. Review: Afro-Carribean Latin fusionists Empresarios have been doing their thing with modest success since the turn of the decade, serving up albums and singles that cleverly combine elements of cumbia, reggae, salsa, hip-hop, dub and house. Here they appear on 7" for the very first time, serving up two typically steamy slabs of ear-pleasing dancefloor fusion for the Virginia-based Boogieburg imprint. While stoned Latin hip-hop flipside "The Vibes" is undoubtedly a cheeky, cheery and quietly impressive affair, it's A-side "Morena" that hits home hardest. Sitting somewhere between electro-cumbia, salsa and skanking Latin pop, it's a full-force blast of sunshine that will sound particularly potent at outdoor parties in the summer months ahead.

K-Jee (2:38)
Review: For their latest release, Matasuna Records has put away their re-editing scalpel and instead decided to serve up two obscure old gems by Peru-based Argentine artist Enrique Lynch. Both tracks were recorded in the early 1970s and have become sought-after items amongst the Afro-Tropical collecting community. Having been re-mastered from the original master tapes, A-side "African Bump" - a jazzy, sun-soaked affair notable for its fantastic use of wah-wah guitar, Blaxploitation grooves and high-register horn solos - sounds better than ever before. The same could be said for Lynch's brilliant cover of The Nite-Liters' funk classic "K-Jee", which adds a little South American sunshine to the familiar grooves and celebrated horn lines.

Review: The first release from the Ethiopian Brothers, 2019's 'Ashadwa', was a brilliant slab of Afro-funk that many erroneously believed to be a long-lost classic. In fact, it was the work of a contemporary producer associated with Jalepeno Records. Regardless, the record sounded authentically old and dusty, as does this equally as inspired sequel. 'Selassie (Part 1)' sets the tone, with the producer and his session musicians serving up a righteous Afro-funk workout rich in Tony Allen influenced drum-breaks, flanged guitars, raw tenor sax lines and killer bass guitar. Even more righteous is the flipside 'Part 2' version that showcases more snaking sax lines and some seriously infectious, chant-like vocals.

The release is PURE fire - a killer chunk of Afro-funk blessed with heavyweight drum breaks, punchy sax solos, celebratory African vocals and super-funky bass. In classic funk style "Ashadwa" is split into two parts; the first boasts chant-along vocals, extended drum breaks and a genuine "party in the studio" vibe, while the second is more instrumental and stripped back with greater use of snaking saxophone solos. Fiery protest tracks amplified by pace and energy, "Black Debtors" is almost militant in its drive and fury before spiralling into a sensational jazz solo from Ubong himself. The source of the tunes is obscure and unknown but the pair bring plenty of their own goodness with additional layers of live instrumentation really bring them to life. 'Lahatz' is steamy and full of sensuous vocal magic and cosmic synth work that will get the floor into action, while 'Kerem' is even more topical and exotic with its rich array of strong melodies and downtempo beats making for a woozy and wonderful trip.

Mangwana (A Vision Of Panorama remix)
Mangwana (Paradise 89 dub)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Faze Action return with a brand new 12", teaming up with Zimbabwean born Zeke Manyika to create "Mangwana". Sung in Zeke's native Shona, and taking influences from Mory Kante, South African Kwaito to early house, Faze Action manage to create a record that harks back yet still has a modern and contemporary feel and is set to be the soundtrack to countless festivals and outdoor parties this summer.

The title track is followed by the stunning "Chiiko", featuring Zeke's vocals enriched by Rob's 'cello's with African rhythms floating you away to another tropical world. A Vision of Panorama turns up the dial with a stunning mix on the flip side. A new bass line adds to some quality keyboard work. Finally the brothers deliver are more stripped out dub "Paradise '89 Mix" tailored for the peak time.

Sound Measures (Azu Tiwaline rework) (9:38)
Review: Munich-based jazz quintet Fazer is Simon Popp and Sebastian Wolfgruber, two masterful drummers who distil world music, afro and jazz into their own unique sound. Here one of their cuts get reworked by shamanistic rhythm innovator Azu Tiwaline. 'Sound Measures (part VI-X)' is a n epic excursion into feathery drumming and jumbled percussion that is like tuning into the sound of the jungle itself. The rework is more mysterious, managing o sound like an ancient ritual as well as a future soundscape where sci-fi motifs mix with jazz drums. Stunning.

Jonny's Theme
Review: Pure Puerto Rican party business, "Hallelujah" was well ahead of its time... Originally released on INS in the 70s, its madcap drum dynamics and bass have more relevance now than they did back in the day. Hyper-limited, original presses have changed hands for over L500 and didn't sound particularly good due to poor pressing issues. AOTN have added their mastering magic in a major way... And thrown in the soundtracky Latin drama of "Jonny's Theme" for good measure. What a package.
