Review: Bobby Montez was a key figure in West Coast Latin jazz and brought colourful energy and rich musicality to the scene in the late 1950s and early 60s. A multi-instrumentalist from a musical Arizona family, Montez settled in Los Angeles, where he balanced accounting by day (!) with leading his vibraphone-driven band at night. His sound is reminiscent of Cal Tjader but fused jazz with cha-cha and pachanga rhythms. With standout albums like Jungle Fantastique and Viva!, Montez's work offered fiery interpretations of Hollywood and Broadway themes in Latin styles. Though he retired from performing by the late 60s, his legacy remains lively and essential, not least through the magic of this record.

In it, Khan's performance of Raag Megh unfolds across three distinct tempos that cook up meditative calm with fiery improvisation. Accompanied by tabla and harmonium and uniquely using an alpine zither, the trio crafts a hypnotic, weightless soundscape that tends to emphasise silence and pulse over traditional drones. The LP features striking black-and-white photos and liner notes by musicologist Peter Pannke who helps to capture the transcendent power and spirit of this historic concert.

Review: The first part of this wonderful new album from Mexican pair Destino Sonido aka a new coming together of veteran Juan Soto and new school vocal talent Labibe, got us well and truly hot under the collar. Part 2 now drops in quick succession and is another summer-ready blend of disco, funk, synth wave and hooky pop. 'Ardiente' is percussive, hip-swinging magic, 'Night Creatures' brings more driving grooves with withering sci-fi melodies and 'Destino Sonido' has sleek synth bass and Donna Summer vibes, while Disco 86 ups the cosmic energy with a fine remix. 'Somos Espacio' comes as lush ambient then chugging Italo, and elsewhere Matt FX brings a nice deep house rework to close.
