Review: Lou Donaldson's Say It Loud! is a classic of the late 60s soul-jazz movement, combining infectious grooves with a lineup of skilled musicians. Released in 1969 on Blue Note, this album highlights California-based Donaldson's expertise on the alto saxophone, blending hard-swinging bebop roots with a funkier, dance-driven approach. The title track, inspired by James Brown's anthem, is a cool, laid-back rendition that shows his nuanced playing alongside the solid rhythms of trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist Jimmy Ponder, organist Charles Earland, and drummer Leo Morris. The album shines with its extended tracks like 'Snake Bone' and 'Brother Soul', where the soloists stretch out, creating moments of tension and release. Ponder's blues-infused guitar solos and Earland's dramatic organ builds are standouts. While the bossa nova rendition of 'Summertime' and the swinging 'Caravan' bring a more traditional jazz feel, the album is most vibrant when it grooves hard. Despite being somewhat overshadowed by Donaldson's earlier work, Say It Loud! remains a highly enjoyable and essential part of his legacy. Review: We are thrilled to announce the European release of a record by one of our Brazilian musical heroes, a king of tropical groove across all eras. This highly limited edition comes in a unique sleeve, making it a killer record and absolutely essential. Great albums often lead to great shows, but with Donato Eletrico, the reverse is true. This album began to take shape after a 2014 performance at Sesc Pinheiros in Sao Paulo, Brazil. During this show, the artist finally presented the iconic album "Quem e Quem" live, more than 40 years after its initial release. For this significant event, Donato collaborated with young Sao Paulo musicians who had been working with him on a new project. Together, they recreated the original groove-laden atmosphere of Quem e Quem, centered around Joao's electric piano. The success of this performance made it clear that this collaboration had the potential for more. The result is Donato Eletrico, a vibrant collection of tracks that hark back to the distinctive sound Donato explored in the 70s.

A Bad Donato is something of a move away from his Brazilian bossa nova roots - instead the album, which was recorded in LA, is electric and eclectic with funk, psychedelic pop and groovy Fender Rhodes driven sounds. This reissue on Verve By Request comes on nice heavyweight 180g vinyl with classics like 'The Frog' and 'Lunar Tune' still sounding fresh.

Review: While never lauded by the jazz establishment, enthusiastic fans of the style have long claimed that Kenny Dorham was one of the finest trumpeters of his generation - not to mention one of the true greats of the bebop era. He worked with all the greats and mentored Joe Henderson, who made one of his compositions, 'Blue Bossa', a bossa-jazz classic. This album showcases for the first time a near legendary concert performed by Dorham, alongside an all-star band, at the Blue Morocco Club in the Bronx, way back in 1967. It's an electrifying performance all told, with his interpretations of Miles Davis's 'the Theme', Charlie Parker's 'Confirmation', Milt Jackson's ' Bag's Groove' (here spun out to near 15 minutes) and his own 'Blue Bossa' standing out.

Review: Jazz audio arborist Dr Tree is itself a multi-branched organism, having first emerged from the (urban) forests of New Zealand as the inosculated union of session musicians Frank Gibson Jr. and Murray Macnab. After catching the attention of EMI, the pair released the eponymous Dr Tree in 1976, which came as an all-instrumental prog excursion into territories already settled by the likes of Weather Report and Return To Forever, yet not fully developed until Dr Tree's prognosis. These roots hold a tight grip; star album cuts 'Transition', 'Affirmation' and 'The Drum' demonstrate a complete, master musicianship, and combine this with studio trickeries of the weirdest and most arcane ilk, making for an unforgettable prog magnolia of minimally treated sound, but still grandly impressive proportions.

Review: Brian Auger's Streetnoise was originally recorded in 1969 with Julie Driscoll and The Trinity. It stands proud as a genre-blurring work of jazz, rock, folk and soul greatness that found the group moving beyond their r&b and jazz roots. Instead, Auger and Driscoll crafted a progressive, avant-garde yet deeply soulful record in which Driscoll's haunting vocals contrast beautifully with Auger's instrumentation. The gatefold sleeve was designed by Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman and was inspired by Hogarth's satirical etchings which in turn reflects the album's artistic ambition. Streetnoise features dynamic instrumentals like 'Ellis Island', great reinterpretations of 'All Blues' and 'Flesh Failures' and standout tracks such as 'Indian Rope Man' which highlight Auger's visionary fusion of styles.

Review: 180 Proof Records & BBE Music are continuing to revive the Strata catalogue with Larry Nozero's 1975 passion project, Time. As the final album released by Strata Inc, Time offers a dream-like mix of moods, blending jazz standards like 'All The Things You Are' with the melancholic 'Tony.' Each track on the album, as described by Nozero, is open to individual interpretation, embodying the concept of time itself. Detroit native Nozero, a member of Charles Moore's Detroit Contemporary 5 and a seasoned musician with credits alongside Henry Mancini, Sergio Mendes and Marvin Gaye, created an album fueled by freewheeling expressionism. Collaborating with his cousin Dennis Tini, Nozero crafted pieces that are funky, soulful, and soothing. Tini's 'Tune for L.N.' stands out with its rhythm-centric jazz, while the scat vocals on 'Chronicle Of The Murdered House' and the high-pitched bebop of 'Baubles, Bangles and Beads' add unique dimensions. Remastered from the original reel-to-reel masters, Time has been beautifully restored with original artwork and never-before-seen photos.
