Mentira
Mentira (limited 7")
Cat: BRZ 45017. Rel: 07 Aug 18
Marcos Valle - "Mentira" (3:43)
Toni Tornado - "Me Libertei" (3:39)
Review: Two premium Latin funk documents on one limited 45, Mr Bongo deliver once again: Marcos Valle needs no introduction to Brazilian music enthusiasts. "Mentira" is a self-cover as Valle takes his 69 classic "Mentira Carioca" and develops the dynamic with a vocal style that's highly reminiscent of Donovan. Flip for Toni Tornado's Black Rio anthem "Me Libertei". Fusing sleazy rock n roll with jazzy Latin soul, madly this is the first time it's ever graced a 45!

Cruel Fist (2:50)
Cold Pressed Venom (3:52)
Review: Funk Night Records goes global again here with a new double-sider from Russia's The Vicious Seeds. They offer up two gems with different vibes on this 7". The first is 'Cruel Fist ', a perfect bit of busy and dense instrumental funk for some steamy dance floor business. On the flip is 'Cold Pressed Venom' which is a more slow-moving and psyched-out sound for late night hours. This is often the approach this outfit takes on this label and like all previous times, it works a treat once more here.

Nature Identical Pleasure (3:10)
Review: Russian outfit The Vicious Seeds are back on their regular home label of Funk Night with yet another of their delightful little 7"s. As always they use each side to offer up slightly different vibes for different settings. First up is the deep-cut instrumental funk of 'Ace Of Haze' with its wah-wah guitars and psyched-out stoner vibes all seducing you into a meditative state of mind. 'Nature Identical Pleasure' then slows it down further with more libidinous vibes, prominent melodies snaking their bay through the dusty drums and grooves that move your soul.

16 Toneladas (reissue)
Cat: BRZ 4503R. Rel: 20 Nov 24
Noriel Viela - "16 Toneladas (Sixteen Tons)"
Juca Chaves - "Take Me Back To Piaui"
Review: Mr. Bongo's Brazil.45 continues with a repress of two highly sought-after tracks from earlier in the series, this time from Noriel Vilela and Juca Chaves. On the A-side, Vilela's 1971 cover of Tennessee Ernie Ford's '16 Tons' transforms the classic American folk song into a smooth, samba-infused groove. Vilela's version reimagines the track which was originally released on Copacabana Records, with a deep rhythmic flair. On the B-side, Juca Chaves' 'Take Me Back To Piaui' from 1970 featured on his 1972 album Muito Vivo delivers lush orchestration, velvety vocals and vibrant cuica tones. It's pure escapist bliss.

Village Hassle (4:03)
Monthly Rainfall (4:30)
Review: Spasibo Records introduces a new 7" vinyl by St. Petersburg outfit the Vicious Seeds, this time on yellow and green wax. In an unconventional move, vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik takes the spotlight and the result is that he truly enhances the band's signature sound. 'Village Hassle' offers a unique blend of rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul - the A-side highlights Chizhik's vibraphone prowess, intertwining it with a dynamic instrumental backbeat. On the flip side, 'Monthly Rainfall' delves into a soulful journey, characterized by cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks which create an atmosphere reminiscent of slow-jammed soul with a contemporary twist.

Review: Who knew an entertainment career spanning the likes of comic sci-fi series like Red Dwarf and kitsch game shows vis-a-vis Robot Wars could result in a side stint curating soul compilations? Well, it's exactly what happened to Craig Charles, who also happens to have been manning BBC6 Music's soul and funk corner for almost 20 years now, not to mention regularly touring the world as a DJ. This isn't his first 'Trunk of Funk'. The first was overwhelmingly well-received by a "funk hungry public", and now, our national treasure Craigy-boy has ensured said public doesn't starve a second time round. Backboned by Charles' introductory yells to imaginary screaming crowds - "are you ready!?" - we cycle through funk bits both old and new, exclusive and widely-available, from Cha Wa to Luther Ingram to Joel Culpepper. Craig says: "Give your ears and feet enough mellifluous musical fodder to last you until Volume 3 - Awooga!"

Review: Heavenly Sweetness has always dealt in music for the soul that is drawn from the worlds of funk, soul and jazz. This new collection of such tunes is another testament to that with a heavily international and world bent. Oodles of Latin, hip hop and Afro vibes pervade the tunes by Guts aka Fabrice Franck Henri alongside a whole host of collaborators. He's a super prolific talent who has put out some ten albums in just over a decade and Estrellas is one of his best. It comes on six sides of delicious wax and takes you on a trip to sunny climates from Cuba to Brazil.

Review: Since launching two years ago, Tony Higgins and Mike Peden's J-Jazz series has become an indispensable guide to Japan's modern jazz scene. The third volume continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, gathering together sought-after, overlooked and little-known cuts from across the jazz spectrum (think spiritual, modal, fusion, post-bop and Latin), all of which were recorded by Japanese artists in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. The standard of music is, somewhat predictably, breathtakingly high throughout, with highlights including the weighty post-modal bop of Koshuke Mine's 'Morning Tide', the sun-kissed Brazil-inspired brilliance of Hideo Shiraki's 'Groovy Samba', and a string of funk-fuelled, dancefloor-friendly workouts from Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphynx, Shigeharu Muka and the Ryojiro Furusawa Quartet.

Review: Enja Records was founded in Munich in the early 70s by jazz devotees Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber. Given a co-sign by the always on-point BBE and IF Music founder Jean-Claude, the label is now enjoying a retrospective compilation which seeks to celebrate the best of their golden years. Featuring performances by John Stubblefield, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Don Cherry, Cecil McBee and Pharoah Sanders collaborator Marvin Hannibal Peterson to name but a few, this collection provides a great jumping-off point for Enja's rich and diverse back catalogue. It may only be an introduction to a vast pool of music, but it's curated with authority by a dedicated head, so you know you're getting a shortcut to the best the label has to offer.

Review: Renowned DJ and selector MURO is a Jedi-level compiler and this new collection of his delves into Victor's extensive archives to spotlight a world of Japanese jazz, fusion and AOR. It take sin plenty of internationally known names like Yasuko Agawa on the sunset sounds of 'L.A. These are luxurious sounds and timeless tracks with MURO's signature funky perspective making this a brillaint choice for brighter, warmer days.

Review: Another comprehensive collection of jazz here from the good people at Light in The Attic. This 14 track compilation has been carefully selected and compiled by Japanese jazz expert Yusuke Ogawa, who is the owner of Tokyo's Universounds record store. It comes on heavyweight vinyl with vast track-by-track liner notes by Ogawa and take sin everything from hard bop to free jazz with plenty of big and explosive moments as well as more deep and introspective sections of calm, all of which has been plucked from the vaults of Nippon Columbia. There is a reason Japanese jazz is so revered, and this record shows why.

Review: Since 2019, Nairo "Papik" Poggi has served up a trio of Cocktail Italy albums, all of which make use of an impressive variety of (mostly) Italian musicians and vocalists. Volume Four sticks to the same script as its predecessors, serving up sun-flecked, often soulful treats that variously mix and match elements of classic string-laden jazz, soul-jazz, jazz-funk, P-funk, bossa-nova and Latin jazz. Basically, it's music to enjoy while sat somewhere hot (either in the sunshine or by a roaring fire) with a glass of something tasty and refreshing in hand. Highlights include the revivalist disco-soul of 'Primavera (featuring Nadyne Rush)', synth-laden Danny Losito hook-up 'Prima di Andare Via', mid-80s Italo-disco-goes-jazz number 'Notti (featuring Anna Fondi) and superbly summery dancefloor workout 'Ti Sento (featuring Vittoria Siggillino)'.

Review: Given that Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's Cuba: Music and Revolution - Culture Clash in Havana is one of the standout compilations of 2021, hopes are naturally sky-high for this speedy sequel. Like its predecessor, volume 2 focuses on music and made and released on the Caribbean island between 1975 and '85, this time round largely focusing on rare fusions of salsa, Latin jazz, disco, soul and funk, mostly licensed from records that have never been available outside Cuba. It's another stunning selection all told, with highlights including the heady Cuban disco/salsa fusion of Orquesta Los Van Van, the fiery disco-funk of FA 5, the heavily percussive hedonism of Luis Carobonell and the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del ICAIC. In a word: essential.

Review: Released to coincide with Japanese musical Goliath Ryuichi Sakamoto's 70th birthday, To the Moon & Back was almost inevitable. Even without worrying reports about the maestro's health, there's no way anyone can have such a significant impact on global music for so long and not have people wanting to pay tribute upon reaching septuagenarian years.
And what a tribute it is. Taking elements from a huge back catalogue that stretches back to the mid-1970s, contemporary greats including Thundercat, Alva Noto, Hildur Guonadottir, The Cinematic Orchestra, and David Sylvian offer new versions and remixes of the master's stuff, with each track here chosen by Sakamoto, which is about as significant a seal of approval as you could hope for. Like the man himself, it's widely varied, consistently innovative and just really, really good.

Spider's term "Chakalaka Jazz" reflects the spicy blend of influences and is named after the local relish made from tomatoes, onions and chilli. This collection, spanning 1969 to 2003, is a mix of local talent, exiles and expats that honours the golden era of the 1970s.

Review: One of the greatest soul voices working in the US today, Billy Valentine's latest release, first plotted out in the summer of 2020, sees the artist responding to the chaos of a global pandemic and the seismic impact of George Floyd's murder via legendary works from Curtis Mayfield, Gil Scot Heron and Pharaoh Sanders. In collaboration with acclaimed producer and songwriter, Bob Thiele Jr. (son of Flying Dutchman founder, Bob Thiele), Valentine's rich, velvety vocals breathe new life into these already-powerful tracks, bringing them into the contemporary political context with renewed urgency. Released on Acid Jazz in partnership with renowned US label Flying Dutchman, Valentine's latest output marks the first new music from the label since the '70s - a momentous return for a keystone tastemaker of the American jazz world.

Review: While previous instalments of Jazzman's essential Spiritual Jazz series have focused on killer cuts and rare gems from the past (specifically material recorded between the 1950s and '80s), the thirteenth volume shines a light on what's happening right now. This second part (of two) successfully showcases the best of the contemporary scene, showcasing cuts from around the world that neatly encapsulate the breadth and diversity of 21st century spiritual jazz. The plentiful highlights include the exotic, Eastern-tinged spiritualism of Wildflower's 'Flute Song', the futurist jazz-funk deepness of Steve Reid's 'For Coltrane', the layered vocals and acoustic instrumentation of Angel Bat Dawid's 'What Should I Tell My Children Who Are Black' and the sparkling, sun-soaked positivity of 'Nova' by Menagerie.

Review: For this album, Wagram France invited various artists from the jazz scene to pay tribute to the legendary band Pink Floyd by interpreting some of their most famous tunes in whatever style they see fit. All the bands biggest singles are taken on from 'Money' to 'Another Brick In The Wall' via 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Us and Them.' They all sound very different with lively keys dancing over jazzy drums on 'Money', folk style vocals from Bird On A Wire and lush harmonies and heavenly vocals from David Neerman on his version of 'Us & Them.' All in all, a fine tribute indeed.

Review: It was a logical next step for the coveted Late Night Tales label and compilation-mix-back-to-ours-selection series. While the brand has been known for inviting some of the finest DJs, artists and acts from the loosely defined and unarguably broad world of electronic music to deliver a personally curated tracklist of hugely various music, At the Movies breaks rank and instead looks to bring together work connected on a thematic level. As the title makes very clear, this is all about cinematic scores.

While there are a million and one of those compilations out there already, this stab at celebrating great soundtracks certainly does stand out. Perhaps chosen by more astute ears than the average 'churn-it-out' cash cow efforts, you'll find some relatively obvious choices for the LNT generation ('Mad World', anyone?) alongside more surprising choices, such as foxtrot classic 'Midnight, The Stars & You' and Wendy Carlos & Mark Ayres vocoder'd up take on 'Ode To Joy'.

Review: We Jazz Records' periodic seven-inch box sets are a good way to keep up with the Finnish label's unique but often in-demand releases. This third edition is packed to the rafters with (relatively) recent treats, with highlights including the head-nodding spy-jazz suspense of the Stance Brothers' 'On Top' (which is available in two equally as alluring variations), the jaunty Steve Reich-goes-jazz brilliance of 'Erzeben Koma' by Koma Saxo, the Hamond-sporting lounge vibes of Eric Malmberg's 'Till Minne Av Lilly Lindstrom' and the experimental nu-jazz suite that is Otis Sandsjo's 'Tremendoce'. Top-notch, inventive and hugely entertaining: a must-have!

Review: Decca have taken on a rather large task here but have pull it off with real style. They have dived into some truly vast and vital archives from labels like Decca, Deram, Argo, EMI Columbia/Lansdowne Series, Fontana, Mercury and Philips to pull out a selection of jazz tunes that tells the tale of the era. There are plenty of collectibles here with highly desired recordings from the 60s taking in big band, swing, modal and bee bop styles. This superb collection also includes a rather comprehensive 20,000 word essay detailing a crucial era of British jazz with full track commentaries and plenty of artist biographies.

Review: The roots of Wilderness America lie in the burgeoning environmental movement of the mid-70s, when Emily DeSpain Polk reached out to David Riordan to pull together a project that would help fund conservation projects. The results when Riordan teamed up Peter Scott to create this nature-minded concept album were stunning, but the album only received a limited distribution in the tradition of private press releases. As such, it's since become a holy grail for collectors which finally gets the release it deserves via EBALUNGA!! From the sweet, funky lilt of vocal tracks like 'Metropolis' to moody instrumentals like 'Flight of The Egret', the quality is unerring and more than worthy of this faithful reproduction.

Review: The first Blue Note Re:imagined album was frankly brilliant - an imaginative, inspired and thoroughly brilliant set of covers of classic cuts from the label's catalogue, expertly realised by a cast of 21st century UK jazz and soul talents - so hopes are naturally high for this sequel. We shouldn't have worried, to be honest, because it's another terrific collection. Our picks of a very strong bunch include Swindle's orchestra-sporting, jazz-funk-goes-hip-hop-soul take on Donald Byrd's 'Miss Kane', Ego Ella May's gently dubby, head-nodding and sunrise-ready re-imagining of Chico Hamilton's 'The Morning Side of Love', an ultra-dreamy, pedal steel-sporting cover of 'Harvest Moon' courtesy of Maya Delilah, and a tactile neo-soul interpretation of Marlena Shaw classic 'Feel Like Making Love' by Kay Young. Impeccable.

Review: You may have caught the striking quality of Ego Ella May and Theon Cross' lead single for Blue Note Re:imagined II, and now the full compilation has arrived. For such a long-standing, heritage label, Blue Note have recognised the renewed moment jazz is having and responded with an exciting look into those artists forging new paths. Review: Although the title track doesn't make it clear, this four-disc compilation gathers together for classic, sought-after and near impossible to find exotica albums - sets that should appeal to both serious collectors and newcomers to the eccentric, jazz-tinged easy listening style. The first disc boasts 'Polynesia' by the Buddy Colette Septet, a 1962 jazz set influenced by the sounds of Hawaii that Cherry Red describes as "the Holy grail of exotica". CD2 presents in full John McFarland's 1959 space-age easy listening delight 'Provocatif', while disc three features Stan Kenton's 'Cuban Fire' (1956), a Latin-tinged big band jazz workout. Finally, disc four delivers Bill Russo's 'Seven Deadly Sins', a dark, eerie and creepy concept album from 1962 informed by cool jazz.

Review: You had us at hello. Or at least you had us at weird French sounds from the 1970s, a decade that played a pivotal role in modernising musical processes, techniques and instruments, among other things. With names like Gilbert Becaud & Christian Gaubert, Jean Schwarz, Jacky Chalard & Gilbert Deaez and Alain Goraguer, those more in tune with this era in Gallic sound culture will know this is going to be a varied ride. Hence we open on 'The Organization', a piece that nods to the classical heritage of screen scores and captures the laidback attitude of the late-1960s perfectly, before moving through a wealth of styles, including proto-New Wave, post-punk, Kraut and meditative moods. For want of a better description. Nothing you won't have encountered before, but certainly pushing in new directions at the time.

Hip Holland does its best to set the record straight, offering up an impressive selection of 'modern jazz' gems recorded in the Netherlands between 1950 and 1970. It's an entertaining and eye-opening selection all told, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the soft-lit shuffle of The Diamond Five's 'Amsterdam Blues', the classic Blue Note flavours of The Jacob Brothers' 'Two Brothers', the bluesy brilliance of 'Golden Eaarings' by Martin Beenen and His Orchestra (where singer Sandy Fort supplies a sublime lead vocal) and the up-tempo hedonism of 'Sing Sing Sing' by the fabulously named Leddy Wessel With Jack Van Poll and His Tree-Oh.

Review: This movie from 1997 was, at the time, hailed as one of the greatest LGBT films of its era. That has not diminished in the years since and it is still much-loved flick that rightly solidified Wong Kar-wai's reputation and earned him Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. It's a classic that explores the sorrow of love-lost and identity struggles amidst Hong Kong's 1997 handover and the film's evocative soundtrack heightens the whole narrative. It features Caetano Veloso's 'Cucurrucucu Paloma' and Astor Piazzolla's 'Tango Apasionado' and perfectly underscores the emotional journey of lovers played by Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung, all set against the backdrop of Argentina. With handpicked live recordings, this beloved soundtrack remains a poignant complement to the film's exploration of heartbreak and self-discovery.

Review: IRMA Records is now in its 37th year and paying resects to the impact of Black music remains central to its vision and output. In the 80s, the acid jazz movement revived soul jazz funk from the 70s, and this vibrant scene continues to thrive today and introduce new artists who take on the mantle. Since the 90s, IRMA has been home to acts on that tip like Jestofunk, Bossa Nostra, Gazzara and Man Sueto and this Mondo Groove collection showcases the diverse Italian scene as it is today. It blends Afrobeat, fusion and world music influences into a party-starting array.

Review: Paris, with its timeless allure, has long been a haven for jazz musicians from around the world and as the spiritual home of gypsy jazz, its vibrant clubs and cafes have shaped the genre's history and many Parisian jazz pioneers of the early 20th century began in the city's Bals-musette where they perfected their craft. Django Reinhardt rose to fame in Paris alongside Stephane Grappelli in the Quintette du Hot Club de France during the 1930s and 1940s while bands like those of Alex Renard and Claude Bolling thrived. Post-war, Saint-Germain des Pres and the Latin Quarter buzzed with iconic jazz clubs like Tabou and La Rose Rouge and now all that can be relived with this fantastic reissue.

Review: The early Cold War years had quite a lot to be envious of. Clearly defined lines of partisanship and international allegiances, rather than this 'each-country-for-itself' end game we seem to be setting up to play right now. Then there was the sexy, swoon-y, seductive and thoroughly intoxicating pop sounds emanating from teenage bedrooms, shopping malls, concert halls and anywhere else you can think of. Call Me Old Fashioned hits the nail on the latter's head. Squarely. The soundtrack to the first part of Louis Wayne Moody's spy trilogy, this is all about those tunes that make you want to sip Manhattans while gazing at some red-lipped diva cast in the low-lit spots of a late night cabaret restaurant. Or lose yourself in the rhythm of a live Latin jazz ensemble, or the bombast of big band. Picture painted, it's a transportive release, even if you've never seen or heard of the movies.

Review: It was France's l'Arome Productions that had first reissued this spectacular selection of Ethiopian soul and funk back in 2009 but, since then, this particular compilation has turned into something of a cult-classic within the digging world, and it has been repressed by Heavenly Sweetness on three different occasions. None of this is in the least bit surprising given just how special the sounds on here truly are, and if you're a fan of Mulatu then this will hit the spot big time! Moreover, tunes by the likes of Samuel Belay, Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared on Mississippi's reissue schedule - and Girma Beyene go much further than the usual dosage of far-out funk, leading us to a tense, dimly lit scenario that is both hypnotic and totally different from anything else. Highly recommended, a timeless slice of history.

Review: This is a wonderful collection of Phleng Thai sakon, a style of Thai popular song that fuses local and Western influences. Recorded from the end of WWII to the early 1960s, these tracks are part of the Luk krung genre which contrasts with rural Luk thung. Following the 1930s Thai cultural revolution, Western elements like jazz were incorporated into Thai music and transformed folk melodies into dances like ramwong. This compilation showcases the polished, urbanized Luk krung style, though some tracks touch on rural themes. Despite Western influences, many tracks retain strong ties to traditional Thai music and create romantic, beguiling arrangements.

Review: Tramp Records presents the first all-German edition of The Peace Chant series here and includes liner notes in German and with English translation. Focused on rare recordings from German musicians of the mid-70s to mid-80s, this collection reveals an experimental era where artists blended jazz, rock, pop, electronic and world music, birthing what would later be known as.... krautrock. Unlike conventional compilations, The Peace Chant highlights lesser-known musicians who took a "spiritual advisor" role, infusing jazz and pop influences into the movement. Thanks to Tramp Records, these obscured yet impactful sounds now find new light.

Review: Analog Africa has repressed the highly valued and long since sold-out Congo Funk! Sound Madness From The Shores Of The Mighty Congo River: Kinshasa/Brazzaville 1969-1982. It is a compilation that superbly shows off the raw energy and funkiness of the Congolese rumba scene. This is the country that spawned such as legendary bands as African Jazz, OK Jazz and African Fiesta and it is said that the concert ahead of the legendary Rumble in the Jungle boxing match between Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman is what really set young hopefully musicians on their paths, after they saw James Brown play live. The story of those artists and the labels they released on in the ensuing years is what is told so well here across four sides of vital wax.

Review: The Golden Hour is a new compilation that blends sunbaked sands with the cool sea breeze and offers a groove-filled journey through jazz and funk. Featuring tunes from iconic artists like Johnny Hammond, Sonny Rollins, Vince Guaraldi, Chico Hamilton and more, this collection captures the essence of floating on a wave while soaking in the final rays of the day. Review: This soundtrack is a classy melange of blues, jazz and rock that all perfectly capture the sultry atmosphere of Dennis Hopper's neo-noir classic of the same name. Set in a small Texas town, the film follows drifter Harry Madox as he becomes entangled in a web of seduction and deceit and the moody cinematography and gripping narrative are elevated by this electrifying score. Legends of their game like Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal and Earl Palmer all feature with sparse, eerie and deeply evocative overtones. For that reason, this one is much sought after and has retained its smoky allure 35 years after its original release.

Review: Asiko Tito is one of many lost gems of Nigerian music. It has been curated by Lagos' legendary Jazzhole and feature music first recorded in the late 90s. The 10-track compilation captures Afrobeat, Yoruba-funk, Afro-funk, highlife and spiritual jazz gems that reflect Lagos' rich musical tapestry. Each track blends traditional rhythms with modern influences which are the hallmarks of the city's vital scene. Jazzhole is a label led by Olakunle Tejuoso and his son and has been a cultural institution for over 30 years thanks to its championing of African and Afro-diasporic sounds. This is another welcome reissue that reminds us of Nigeria's enduring creativity.
