I'll Be Around
Cat: VR 011. Rel: 05 Nov 24
I'll Be Around (3:49)
I'll Be Around (dub vocal) (3:46)
Review: Otis Gayle and Robert Dubwise Brown come together for this superb new 7" on Vortex Japan. It's a glorious cover of an already glorious original tune. Their version of 'I'll Be Around' leaves the originals feel-good melodies in place but works them into a lover's rock rhythm with gentle but sunny percussion and a heartfelt re-sung vocal. It's buttery smooth and good for the soul. On the flip is a dub vocal version that is even more laid back and deep, with fleshy bottom ends and wiggling bass.

Earth Sound Parts 1 & 2
Cat: JFR 727. Rel: 13 Sep 22
Earth Sound (part 1) (2:35)
Earth Sound (part 2) (2:39)
Review: Manchester, Jamaica-born ukulele playing legend Ernest Ranglin was one of the forefathers of the ska moment in the 1950s and was later a resident at Ronnie Scott's in London. Count Ossie meanwhile was a Nyahbinghi drumming maestro who lay the famous playing style down on record for the first time in the 60s. Together they cooked up this two-part gem in 1970 and it will cost you a few quid to find a decent copy these days. This reissue on Gay Feet allows you to get your hands on some real history as the world Afro-Cuban, jazz, African and folk all collide with reggae in superb fashion.

Tears (4:17)
Just Be Good To Me (feat Andrea Brown) (3:37)
Review: Sam Redmore's 'Tears' 7" is in keeping with his usual eclectic style. He effortlessly brings many different vibes to this pair of covers which are reworked in a cumbia style. First up is Giorgio Moroder's 'Tears' which in his hands comes something likely to win over a whole new generation of fans. An equally standout original is on the b-side, namely a Latin flavoured version of SOS Band's electro boogie classic 'Just Be Good To Me'. It will sashay and swing its way into your affections with its big horns and makes this a vital pick up.

Harvest Moon

Harvest Moon (4:06)
Harvest Moon (Slowly remix) (4:24)
Review: With a storied history stretching right back to the mid-1990s, Reggae Disco Rockers are one of Japan's longest-serving reggae and rocksteady bands. While they're best-known for their original songs, they've delivered some killer cover versions over the years - including 2021's sun-splashed reggae re-imagining of Frankie Knuckles' classic house track 'The Whistle Song'. This seven-inch features another: the band's immersive, loved-up, super-sweet lover's rock-meets-Balearic reggae take on Neil Young classic 'Harvest Moon', featuring some suitably weary, emotive lead vocals from Marter. Flower Records regulars Slowly provide a dreamy and dubbed out take on the flip, as you'd expect given their output in recent times.

Reggae Dynamite Vol 3
Reggae Dynamite Vol 3 (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: OGR 810. Rel: 28 Jul 21
The Regulators - "Jamaican Velvet" (with Melbourne Douglas) (3:14)
Brentford Rd Soul Rebels - "Wet Scream" (2:14)
Woodfield Road Allstars - "Muhammad Ali" (2:33)
The Regulators - "Race Track" (2:31)
Review: Original Gravity have been hard at work putting together a third volume in their reggae Dynamite series. This one lines up another belting 45 featuring tunes from The Regulators - twice - Brentford Rd Soul Rebels and Woodfield Rd Allstars. All of the tunes have booming bass warmth and vintage organ riffs that just transport you to a time and a place, even if you didn't live it yourself. The drums rumble on like a fat bottomed elephant and the horns take a majestic lead. These are atmospheric tunes ready and waiting to get people moving and our standout is Woodfield Road Allstars' tribute to boxing legend Muhammed Ali.

Woodfield RD Allstars - "Coast To Coast" (2:50)
The Regulators - "Why Dub Why?" (2:54)
Woodfield RD Allstars - "Soul Flute" (2:30)
Review: Original Gravity is run by label owner Neil Anderson, who has a tireless work ethic and superb devotion to ska, reggae, and everything in between. His love of boss rhythms comes to the fore once more here with new tunes from three pseudonyms - The Regulators, Woodfield Road Allstars and Prince Dolly - all of whom, in actual fact, are him. Regulators cut "Why Why Why" opens up with a heavy bottom end, "Coast to Coast: has a big organ led groove and "Why Dub Why" reworks the opening tune into a rocksteady roller.

Duke Reid, Tommy McCook & His Skatalites - "Night Food Ska" (2:49)
The Skatalites - "Latin Goes Ska" (3:02)
Review: Treasure Isle's latest seven-inch single dusts down and offers up two fuzzy, all-action gems from the label's bulging vaults. On the A-side you'll find the Duke Reid produced "Night Food Ska", a 1964 B-side from Tommy McCook and the Skatalites that layers duel male/female vocals atop a rich, life-affirming backing track full of jaunty ska grooves and mazy horn solos (trumpet, sax). Over on the flip you'll find the Skatalites' superb "Latin Ska", which featured on the same Jamaican single all those years ago ("Latin Goes Ska"). Entirely instrumental, it features a wealth of Latin-influenced horn lines and solos over another skanking ska rhythm.

Tarrus Riley - "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" (4:10)
Dean Fraser - "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" (version) (4:13)
Review: If you're in the mood for some gently summery reggae-soul to warm you on cold winter nights, we'd heartily recommend this tidy new single from Tarrus Riley, son of legendary Jamaican vocalist Jimmy Riley. 'Love is Stronger Than Pride' is breezy, musically positive and gentle, with Riley delivering a slick and emotive lead vocal over a backing track rich in toe-tapping reggae grooves, subtle organ motifs, twinkling synth sounds and, most surprisingly, some rather lovely Spanish guitar motifs. It comes accompanied by a flipside 'Version' mix that's not all that dubbed-out, but nevertheless does a great job in showcasing the track's sunny and heart-warming instrumentation.

Got To Be Free

Got To Be Free (2:31)
What A Situation (1:49)
Review: The Rulers' rare late-60s rocksteady gem resurfaces on Skank & Groove with its first-ever reissue since that initial release. Active from 1966 to 1969, the group vanished after releasing this iconic 45 rpm which kicks off with 'Got To Be Free,' a heartfelt anthem of universal love that questions "Why can't we be free to love each other?" 'What a Situation' is a raw rudeboy tale of judgment and prophecy and both jams were produced by Carl Johnson of JJ Records, famed for The Ethiopians' 'Everything Crash.'

Miracle Of Love (warehouse find)
Cat: MML 2742. Rel: 23 Nov 20
Devon Russell - "Miracle Of Love" (3:55)
High Times Players - "Miracle Of Love" (version) (4:18)
Review: Even in this internet age where you can find out pretty much anything about anyone, Devon Barrant Russell's story remains much of a mystery. Bits of info are known about his life and recording career, but there are also huge gaps. What we do know is that he worked with High Times Players in 1984 on a full length, but then never again according to discogs. Despite that, this tune isn't on that album, so who knows where and when it was recorded. It's a warehouse find from a recent stock take and fuses a sentimental soul sound with blissful 80s reggae, R&B and roots vibes. It's a lovely little tune, too.

Devon Russell & Tartans - "Making Love" (2:57)
Heptones, Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "Crying Over You" (2:38)
Review: After a recent Pressure Sounds compilation put together the best of Caltone Records - documenting the truest gems of a great Jamaican dub label - the horse's mouth is now heard neighing. Caltone themselves have now reissued Devon Russell & The Tartans' 'Making Love', a long-lost from the late 1960s troubadours. Ne'er released before, it also comes backed exclusively with a bluesy Heptones, Tommy McCook & The Supersonics lamentation, 'Crying Over You'.
